If your fairway woods look something like this and you want to change them to this strike wise, we’re about to change that for you in three simple steps. So, we know the frustration. Either a great drive or you’ve just hit the middle of the fairway. You’ve hit a decent drive, you’re in play, you pull out your fairway wood, you pull out your hybrid thinking you can get it close and give yourself a chance of a par, maybe a birdie, and then all of a sudden you chunk it, you top it, you thin it, it stings, it feels horrible. There’s honestly nothing more frustrating. If you’re maybe a little bit shorter off the tea, you definitely need these guys to work. So, here’s a three-step simple process in today’s video to get you flushing your fairbye boots. And to be honest, I think we’re probably partly to blame. There’s lots and lots of different ways to hit your fair woods. There’s lots of videos say hit down on your fairway woods. There’s lots of videos to say hit it like a driver or sweep it up off the ground. It’s quite confusing. I get a lot of people coming in that come in, they have no idea how to hit their fairway wood. And actually, the traditional ball position, where do we put the ball can actually be really confusing because it very much depends on how you stand. A lot of videos tell you to relate it to where your feet are. And actually, that can be really, really confusing. So, let’s start on where should the club meet the ball. So, if we take an arc in the swing where the club head’s either swinging down or up, we kind of want to hit this on the flat spot. So, if you imagine an arc, we definitely don’t want to hit it too far back in the stance because we’re going to hit down on it with a very low lofted club. So, you’re not going to get any launch unless you’ve got lots of speed. And equally, you don’t want the ball too far forward because then that club head’s going to travel up too much and you’re either going to top it, thin it, hit it on the bottom of the face, smash the ground first. So, you kind of want to hit this on the flat spot. Okay? You’re you’re equally not hitting way down on the ball, you’re equally not hitting too far up. And actually the best way to get the ball position right is to relate the ball position to your lead armpit. So here, not the feet here. The lead armpit or the lead arm, the lead shoulder is going to dictate where the bottom of the swing is. So if I keep that in the same place, that is where the club bottoms out. Okay? So if we can get the ball consistently just inside the left armpit, just inside it. So the good thing is everyone can do this and a lot of people wear a lot of golfers are wearing something with a logo or there’s a badge or there’s something. So you take your setup, you look at where the crease is in the armpit and then you get the ball just inside it or if we go up from there, we get the ball on the left ear. That’s probably one of the most important things. If you can get the ball position right, you’ve got a good chance of hitting the ball well. We start to get that really nice flat spot where you just flush your fairway woods. So let’s just do that right now. Let’s just do that. Step one, get the ball position right. So, let’s just relate that to the left armpit just inside. I’ve got the badge here. Get it in line with the badge. Get it in line with the left ear. Get that in a good solid position. Even put a stick down or a golf club down. And relate it more to the upper body and less to the feet because this purely depends on stance width. Some people stand narrow, some people stand wide. There’s not necessarily a thing that you have to do, but this is a rule that you have to do because that really dictates the low point of the swing. Where does the club bottom out? So, get that ball position in a good place under the ear, flush away, and a nice strike. Let’s give that a go again. This is one of the most important things to get right on the course. So, ball position just inside the left armpit. Get that in a good place [Music] and watch the strike massively improve. So, next up, the sternum position. So, watch this. This is where basically the middle of your chest, the zip is probably the easiest way. The zip or the buttons of your shirt is the easiest way to check this. So, what we definitely do not want to do, so we’ve got that ball position under the left ear. Two things we don’t want. We don’t want the sternum on top or to the left of the golf ball. That’s going to lead to you hitting down too much, delofting the club, and not launching the ball in the air. Equally, we don’t want to go too far the other way because if we tilt the spine too much, this is what a lot of people do if they try and sweep the ball. They get the sternum too far behind the ball and start to sweep up, that’s when you hit those nasty tops. So, we want the ball position under the left ear, but we want the sternum, the middle of the chest, the zip, in line with the club head. So, that’s dead easy. It’s so easy to get that right on the golf course. Ball position under the left ear or inside the left armpit, head, chest in line with the club head. Then at least you’ve got a really sound setup that’s going to give you a really good chance of flush in the woods. Just like this. So, there’s two honestly so simple steps. Anyone can do it. If you’re not sure if you’re doing it or not, just stick it on camera. Get one of your mates to take a picture. Once you get this right, you’ve got a massive chance of getting the bottom of your swing in the right place time and time again. So, here’s the next piece, and this is a really simple drill that you can do on the golf course. What I want you to try and do is have two practice swings before every single shot. And you’re not going to try and thump or dig the ground. You’re just going to try and sweep or brush it almost like you’re going to give the grass a little haircut. You definitely have to hit the ground with a fairy wood. If you don’t, you’re going to top and thin it. So, one of the easiest drills, and I’ll just attach this here on the screen, is to put a T just in front of the golf ball. And you can do this obviously not in competition, but next time you practice, you’re out playing a few holes, put a teg in front of the ball. And what you want to try and do is hit the ball, then the tea. Ball T. That’s where you want to ground out. Couple of practice swings before that. Sweeping the grass is really, really beneficial to getting good strike. This is three simple things you can take out on the golf course straight away. So, here’s what I want you to do. You can put this down just as a point of reference, but you don’t need it. But put the tea about 2 in in front of the golf ball. And what we want to do is we want to make sure we strike the ground there. We want to make sure that we at least cutting some blades of grass. You don’t want some massive divot. Equally, you don’t want no divot. You just want to gently just take a little bit of turf. That just means that you’re striking high enough on the face to get a a high launch. Because the problem with hitting low in the face, if we hit low in the face with what’s already a low lofted club, there’s a thing called gear effect. So when your ball hits the bottom of the face, it twists down and delofts the club even more. So you’re going to hit it really low. You’re not going to get any height. So we need it to be slightly higher in the face. So to do so, we need to hit the ball and we need to at least graze the grass. Best way to do this on the golf course before you get step one and step two right before you get that phenomenal ball position. Really good setup. Just make two swings striking the ground on the left hand side of the ball. This side. Again, we don’t want huge divots. You just want to make sure you’re cutting some blades of grass at the bare minimum. So, couple of swings, blades of grass or a really thin shallow divot, blades of grass. And then you’re going to step forward. You’re gonna catch the ball and then strike the tea. And if you’re looking for any extra help and maybe you want to hit your driver 15, 20 yards further, why don’t you check out this video just here? Comment down below. What is the best fairway wood tip you’ve ever had? Let’s post some simple tips to try and help other people with their fairway woods. I would probably say one of the most common one is getting a sevenwood. Getting a fivewood. Shorter shaft, more loft makes it easier. Too many of you guys are playing with three-woods, which a lot of people just don’t need three-woods. They’re long. They’re hard to hit out the middle and they don’t have a lot of loft. Awesome tips!👌
Callum I'm slowly getting there with the stronger grip, does that grip apply to fairway woods, hybrids and irons? Feet square, shoulders open?
Watched your vid on the grip and tried it this morning…. I gained around 15 to 20 yards off the tee and off the fairway…. Still a little short on some of the long holes but nice to be chipping with a lot more control onto the greens…. Shot 34 points in our 4 ball not to bad for a 72 Yr old….. Thanks for the tips… Keep them coming….
