Rory mroy fires back at Charlie Hoffman over PGA Tour criticism Rory mroy has delivered a sharp rebuttal to Charley Hoffman’s recent letter which took aim at players who are reducing their PGA Tour appearances while participating in other events the four-time major Champion made it clear that he was not impressed with Hoffman’s arguments pointing out a major flaw in his criticism Hoffman a veteran golfer with two decades on the tour recently called for players to increase their commitment to PGA Tour events in his letter he took issue with those prioritizing the tech driven tgl the DP World Tour and various exhibition matches over traditional PGA tour stops he also raised concerns about the fairness of the Aon swing five qualification system which offers spots in high stakes $20 million tournaments based on recent form however mckelroy was quick to dismantle Hoffman’s stance highlighting a key contradiction speaking after his tgl match on Tuesday mckill Roy pointed out that the PGA Tour itself has a financial stake in the very events h and criticized I think the thing he forgot to mention is the PGA Tour owns 20% of tgl so he’s criticizing his own product mroy said they also own a good chunk of European tour Productions so again I thought some of the elements of the letter were fine and addressed some issues he was criticizing the Aon swing five he was sixth in that the northern Irishman also suggested that Hoffman’s concerns were somewhat self-serving particularly his comments about the Aon swing five in which he narrowly missed out on a spot he talks about about having it be for the good of the tour but he’s also talking about himself as well melroy added I thought a couple of them were pointed at me a little bit because tgl race to Dubai non- PGA Tour events like The Showdown that Scotty and I did in December I’ve been vocal about not wanting to play quite as much so it seemed like it was pointed at me despite the ongoing debate over PGA Tour participation maroy emphasized that players must prioritize their own careers while still contributing to the tour in their own way look what every player has to do is look out for themselves he said we have to do what’s best for our own individual careers and yes at the back of our mind try to do whatever we can to help the tour but I think the best way for any of us to help the tour is to Tee It Up and play as best we can meroy has started the 2024 season in style finishing fourth at the Dubai Desert Classic before capturing a spectacular win at the AT&T Pebble Beach proam last weekend however he will be skipping this week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open and is set to return to action next week at the Genesis invitation at Tory Pines as the battle over player commitments and the PGA Tours future continues me Roy has once again made it clear he’ll keep playing on his own terms friends what is your opinion about this share in the comments
