When the debate over golf’s greatest of all time sparks up, two names usually dominate the conversation, Jack Nicholas and Tiger Woods. It’s easy to see why. Nicholas boasts 73 PGA Tour victories and a record setting 18 major championships. Woods, meanwhile, has 82 PGA Tour wins, tied with Sam Sneed for most all time and 15 majors. But ask PGA Tour pro Matt Wallace, and you’ll get a very different answer. Scotty Sheffller. Wallace’s opinion might raise eyebrows, but it’s rooted in Sheffller’s extraordinary run of form punctuated by his stunning victory at the Open Championship at Royal Portrait. With that win, the 29-year-old Texan joined a truly elite club, just the fourth golfer in history to win the Masters, the Open, and the PGA Championship before turning 30 alongside Nicholas Woods and Rory Mroy. Golf analyst Brandle Shambbley recently shared a moment from a conversation with Wallace on the favorite Shambbley. I asked Matt Wallace, “What do you think about Scotty Sheffller?” Shambbley recounted and after praising Portrait as the best open venue, he dropped a bombshell. I think Scotty Sheffller is playing the greatest golf that has ever been played. That statement floored Shambbley and understandably so. Despite Sheffller’s 17 PGA Tour titles and four major wins, those numbers still fall short of Nicholas and Woods. Yet, Wallace’s praise wasn’t about accolades. It was about the way Sheffler is playing the game. Shambblei contrasted Sheffller’s style with Tigers. Tiger, because he was wild, made it seem like he was always doing the impossible. But Scotty isn’t wild. He hits it exactly where he’s looking over and over again. He just stacks one great shot on top of another. And Shambbley isn’t the only one seeing shades of greatness. Jack Nicholas himself sees something familiar in Sheffller’s game. Speaking at the 2025 Memorial Tournament, Nicholas said, “Once I got myself into position to win, I had to be smart about finishing. That’s exactly how Scotty plays. He reminds me so much of the way I like to play. That endorsement alone would be enough.” But Butch Harmon, the legendary coach who guided Tiger Woods and observed Nicholas at his peak, echoed the sentiment after Sheffller’s open triumph. In all the comparisons being made, he’s like Tiger. He’s like Jack. I’ll tell you this. Mentally, Sheffller is the closest thing I’ve seen to Nicholas, Harmon said. He doesn’t make mental errors. He plays smart, controlled golf. His iron control is fantastic, and when the moment calls for it, he’ll hit it to the middle of the green without hesitation. Harmon went even further. In how he wins, he may resemble Tiger, but in how he plays, he’s more like Jack. I’ve never seen anyone emulate Nicholas quite like Sheffller does. It’s not just on the course either. Sheffller’s offc course values also mirror Nicholas’s legendary commitment to family. Nicholas once famously said, “Family first, golf second. Sheffller appears to live by the same code at Royal Portrait, the new open champion reflected. I’m blessed to come out here and play golf. But if it ever affected my home life or the relationship I have with my wife or son, that would be the last day I play this game for a living.” So, while Scotty Sheoffller’s trophy case may still be chasing the legends, his mental game, playing style, and personal values have already placed him in rarified air. For Matt Wallace, that’s enough to call him the best to ever do it. And with golf’s biggest names lining up to sing his praises, maybe it’s time the rest of the world started paying attention.
