Cameron Young holds a commanding five-shot lead as he seeks to end a heartbreaking run of runner up finishes, while a nervy final round awaits Australia’s Cam Davis at the PGA Tour’s regular season finale, the Wyndham Championship.

Young jumped to -20 overall with a five-under par third round of 65 at Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina, five clear of Colombian Nico Echavarria.

The 28-year-old American is chasing a maiden PGA Tour victory after an astonishing seven second place finishes throughout his career, most notably to Australia’s Cameron Smith at the 2022 Open Championship at St Andrews.

Young burst out of the blocks with four birdies in a row from holes three to six after completing his bogey free eight-under par second round 62 in the morning after lightning suspended play on Friday afternoon.

His play was more steady for the remainder of the afternoon as his 36-hole three shot lead increased by two.

It has been more than three years since a player squandered victory at a PGA Tour event when leading by five shots or more at the start of the final round.

Young is determined to keep that streak alive, but insists he does not have a monkey on his back.

“If you had asked me two years ago I’d probably say yes, but if you go back through, I finished second a bunch, I’ve gotten beat a lot,” he said.

“I’ve played some good golf on Sunday in really all those cases. So that’s all I’m trying to do tomorrow.

“I’m starting in a nice spot, so I’m just looking to try to beat second place by as many as I can.

“That’s been my mindset from the first tee on Thursday and that’s what I’m going to try to do tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, Davis will need a solid final round to ensure he keeps his place in the top 70 of the FedEx Cup standings.

The Sydneysider is -5 for the tournament in a tie for 36th, alongside countryman Adam Scott, but has slipped from 67th to 72nd in the rankings after three rounds.

That means as things stand that Davis will miss the FedEx Cup playoffs.

There are equations aplenty about how various players either make or miss the top 70, but despite the exact number being unclear, it is likely that Davis will need to shoot better than rounds of 68, 68 and 69 he has strung together so far.

“Well, I just, I don’t want my season to end this week,” Davis said following the completion of his second round which broke an unwanted streak of three straight missed cuts.

“I mean, it would be nice to see if I can push myself to next week and then see what happens after that. You know, they give you plenty of motivation to try and play well, especially at the end of the season.”

He added: “I knew where I was going to be, so I was well aware of what the situation was, but I haven’t been obsessing about it.

“I’ve just known that there’s a little extra pressure on this week.”

PGA Tour rookie Karl Vilips is the best placed of the Australians at -7, in a share of 21st.

The 23-year-old’s hopes of making a maiden appearance in the FedEx Cup playoffs are still alive as he needs a solo fourth finish or better to jump into top 70.

Vilips is five shots back from Chris Kirk, Aaron Rai and Mac Meissner, who share third place, and will need to produce something more special than his rounds of 67, 67 and 69 so far.

Like Davis and Vilips, Scott also shot a third round 69 and that one-under par effort did significant damage to his hopes of making the playoffs.

The 45-year-old needs to come in a two-way tie for third or better to avoid missing the PGA Tour’s post-season for the second time in three years, and is seven shots behind the trio that share third.

The 2013 Masters champion will need to play a miraculous final round himself, and hope other cards fall his way.
