Taipei, Aug. 2 (CNA) Taiwanese veteran golfer Yani Tseng (曾雅妮) said she was proud of herself for making the cut at the Women’s British Open in Wales — the first time she has advanced at a major LPGA tour in seven years.
“I’m proud of myself because I never gave up,” Tseng told reporters after completing the second round on Friday.
A two-time champion at the British major, the Taiwanese shot an even-par 72 in the first round. In the second round on Friday, she carded four birdies and five bogeys to finish with a 1-over 73, tying in 35th position alongside 17 other players.
It was the first time she made the cut at an LPGA event since the 2018 Swinging Skirts Taiwan Championship.
Tseng said she is excited to make it this far and wants to enjoy the rest of the tournament, not knowing what kind of result to expect.
“After all, it’s been a while since I’ve played into the weekend. I hope to play more aggressively and do my best,” she said.
The Women’s British Open format is a 72-hole stroke play tournament that starts with 144 players. The lowest 65 and ties after 36 holes (two rounds) advance to the weekend.
The Taiwanese player, who had been battling injuries and mental slumps over the past few years, said it took her a great deal of effort to get back to this point.
Tseng jokingly described her relationship with golf as a love-hate one, but said she still enjoys the sport.
“I’m still passionate about golf. I want to see the best version of myself and return with good performances,” she said.
Meanwhile, Taiwanese golfer Hsu Wei-ling (徐薇淩) is also competing in the tournament and tied for 19th after two rounds on Friday.
