Bryson DeChambeau didn’t hold back when quizzed on who he considers the ultimate golfer during a star-studded event for ‘Happy Gilmore 2,’ which featured cameos from numerous celebs and sports icons.
His choice for the title of golf’s greatest was straightforward. “I don’t think it’s hot, but I think Tiger [Woods] is the greatest golfer of all time,” DeChambeau stated candidly.
This endorsement is particularly meaningful given DeChambeau’s own rollercoaster journey in the sport. Known as the “Mad Scientist” for his radical approach to the game, he bulked up to increase his drive and swing speed, only to encounter injuries and controversy, especially after his move to LIV Golf, which plans to significantly boost its tournament prize funds by 2026.

Despite the ups and downs, DeChambeau clinched victories at the 2020 and 2024 U.S. Opens, showcasing his ability to triumph over challenges.
Even with his transformation into a two-time major winner and a vocal presence in contemporary golf, DeChambeau’s admiration for Woods has not waned.
“He’s my hero still,” DeChambeau has expressed, acknowledging the impact of Woods’ guidance on aspects like putting, shot shaping, and course analysis.
Woods’ legendary career achievements, including matching Sam Snead’s record of 82 PGA Tour wins and securing 15 major championships, along with his historic run of four consecutive majors during the “Tiger Slam” of 2000–2001, have set new benchmarks in the sport.
He set records for scoring average, consecutive cuts made (142), and world number one weeks, stretching his dominance from 1999 into 2013.
DeChambeau expressed his respect for Woods’ legacy despite Woods’ open criticism of LIV Golf.

Before the 2022 British Open, Woods questioned the new tour’s model, stating, “What these players are doing for guaranteed money, what is the incentive to practice? What is the incentive to go out there and earn it in the dirt? You’re just getting paid a lot of money up front and playing a few events and playing 54 holes. They’re playing blaring music and have all these atmospheres that are different.”
Even with their differing views on tour participation, DeChambeau has previously stated: “I have ultimate respect for what he has to say… I have the utmost respect for what he did for the game of golf, what he did for the PGA Tour that allowed us to have this opportunity.”
DeChambeau acknowledged he wasn’t taken aback by Woods’ remarks because “it’s his legacy. I totally understand it.
“He’s what’s allowed this to happen in a really, cool unique way that in the end, I think will all work out to everyone’s benefit. It’s just a little bit of muddy waters right now.”
While DeChambeau’s career has diverged from Woods’, his admiration for the legends of golf and their contributions to the sport remains unwavering.
