Let’s talk rule number 12. Bunkers. These sandy hazards look simple, but the rules here are stricter than anywhere else on the course. Hey golfers, John here with You Think You Know the Rules, presented by our friends at T10 Golf Pass. Now, first the basics. Before your stroke, you can’t touch the sand with your golf club right next to the ball. That includes grounding your club behind it or testing the surface. Automatic two-stroke penalty in stroke play. You can, however, move loose impediments like leaves or pebbles. Just be careful. If your ball does move in the process, you’ll need to replace it and take a penalty unless the movement was unavoidable. Now, you’re also allowed to take practice swings outside the bunker, and you can dig your feet in for a stance, but don’t brush the sand during your back swing or while walking through the bunker. That still does count as testing your conditions. And of course, here’s a weird one. If your ball plugs deep in the sand and you remove just enough sand to see or hit it better, you’ve now improved your conditions, which is a penalty. even if your intent was just to find the ball. So, if you’re in the bunker, light feet, clean swings, and practice outside the bunker.
