The Camas Prairie Port Townsend Women’s Golf Club will sponsor their fourth and final Wednesday night women’s golf clinic on July 31. The last three Wednesday evenings have been open for instruction to twenty women who signed up for classes in driving, chipping and putting basics.
Volunteer instructors from Discovery and Port Townsend women’s golf clubs have held small group lessons from 5:30 to 6:30 followed by a social hour in the clubhouse. The final Wednesday will include actual course play in a scramble format with a mentor golfer in each group.
This was the second year the clinic was offered to the first twenty women to sign up, with a waiting list to participate in both years. Sign ups for the 2026 clinics will be open in early spring. An announcement will be made once details of the clinic are established.
Dee Sweeney, captain of the golf club, organized the clinics with help from Shelley Connolly, a LGPA teaching professional. Instructors were Wanda Synnestvedt, Jane Peoples, Starla Audette, Barbara Aldrich, Dee Sweeney, Shelley Connolly, Cindy Breed, Jane Guiltinan, Jayne Neu, and Maisie Walker, a UW senior intern with the Capstone Project.
July was also the month for the Captain’s Cup championship at Discovery Bay Golf Club. This annual tournament awards a trophy to the top two golfers in both Gross and Net score competitions. The winners of the 18-hole eclectic competition tournament Jane Peoples with a gross score of 75, and Dee Sweeney with a net score of 63.
Play for the overall club champion will take place on three consecutive Thursdays in August.
In addition to special clinics and club championships, both women’s clubs continued with their weekly competition games. Last week, Camas Prairie golfers played a team low net game. The averaged low net score of 35 was posted by the winning team of Barb Aldrich, Starla Audette, Linda Deal and Jayne Neu. Across town at Discovery Bay, the women played Cris-Cross.
Players play all 18 holes, but choose only nine for the competition — either #1 or #10, #2 or #11, #3 or #12 and so on. Winner of the competition with a net score of 26 was Katherine Buchanan, 2nd place with a net of 27 was Barb Aldrich, and 3rd place was awarded to Cindy Westwood with 29.
