So I have recently started playing, was improving but by that I mean I was hitting 114. But I started reading Ben Hogan’s 5 lessons. I finished the grip section and went to the range. Could not hit a single ball. Not only that, my 5 iron snapped. Worst day at the range. Probably the rest of my bad habits lingering but I was hoping some pros could tell me everything I’m doing wrong with the grip.

Grip looks too weak mate. Would take a guess you hit right ? First thumb needs to come over 15% to the right

That’s a bad grip. Its too much in the palms.

Ben Hogan didn’t even grip it they way that was illustrated in the book.

Read his book if you want, but take it all with a grain of salt. He didn’t write it. He dictated for some magazine article and they eventually turned it into a book. The illustrations are just that, illustrations of some artists’ interpretation and not photographs of actual grips from actual swings.

No, don’t do that. I want to follow it to a tee, I can’t come up with corrections when I’m this shite and don’t know what it is I’m doing wrong

I bought Ben Hogans book about 3 months ago and my swing has tremendously improved. Especially with the grip. But if you read the book he suggests little variations if needed. With the lead hand you want to place the club in the crook of your index finger and under the meaty part of your palm then fold it over

Should not take you 10 minutes to grip it

Know this about Ben Hogan’s book:

He was a chronic hooker. Ball went left most of his career.

The book is a list of things he figured out to prevent the ball from hooking while still generating power. Which is great for someone who also hooks it.

For a slicer/fader, it’s a terrible book and will make you worse.

So, for one thing, you’ve got the grip wrong. Your trail hand his too on top of the handle and the grip isn’t in your fingers. Ben’s thumb is also on the forward side of the grip.

But more importantly, you’re not going to learn golf by trying to emulating photographs from Ben Hogan swing positions. You need golf lessons from people who know how to analyze your body and natural tendencies.

The “vardon” grip. Thats the grip I use. If you dont clear your hips or have a slow turn, you’ll always hit it right. BUT, the grip makes it near impossible to hook the ball.
