WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – Over 100 golfers teed off today in Wausau, carrying on NewsChannel 7’s Mark Zelich’s love of the game and conveying his wish to build camaraderie and a community around golf.
WIAA golf state champion Russell Dettmering took home the men’s championship title today. He finished -6 and added another trophy to his collection.
“Golf is, it’s been my life since I was two years old,” said Dettmering. “One thing Mark told me specifically, ‘Keep at it.’ If it comes naturally to you, just keep working. Golf is my life. I’ll do it till the day I die. I love it.”
Every swing of the way, Dettmering honored the legacy of Zelich, keeping his spirit alive in Wausau.
Tournament director Nic Babl echoes the sentiments Zelich set forth long ago.
“Everything we do out here is in memory of Mark and what he created, and keeping this special event going,” Babl said. “We didn’t want to let it pass away as things do with time. The people keep coming out and showing up, and playing, and everyone loves to be here and play golf, and have the camaraderie and friendship, so it’s really special.”
The Zelich golf classic welcomes any participants who love the game of golf and are looking to challenge themselves.
“Anyone can play, we have different flights. We have men’s, women’s, seniors, and super seniors. So, any of all ages and abilities. We really just want anyone who enjoys the game of golf and the friendship that it involves,” said Babl. “Anyone can play and win some great prizes and just have a great time, and build friendships along the way.”
