John Doyle gave another glimpse of his huge potential by firing a course record 62 at Luffenham Heath Golf Club to roar into contention at the Carris Trophy.
After opening rounds of 74 and 66, Doyle has rocketed into second place on his own on eight-under, three shots behind Ben Sessions who had shot a previous course record 63 the day before.
Doyle fired a whopping eleven birdies during his round as he searches a third win of a superb season to date.
The 17-year-old Fota Island star opened with a birdie but followed up with back to back bogeys.
He roared to the turn in sumptuous style as he rolled in four successive birdies from the fifth. After dropping a shot on the 11th he was back on the birdie train with a hat trick of gains on 12, 13 and 14.
Doyle, who represented Ireland in the European Team Championships a fortnight ago in Killarney, finished with aplomb as he birdied his last three holes to give himself a huge chance heading into the final round.
Glasson’s Isaac Oliver is 30th on two-over while Delgany’s William Walshe is plus seven with Bruce McDonald of Lisburn is 14-over.
