Hey everyone—looking for some advice or insight on a recent club fitting.
I was recently fitted by the Taylormade rep at my country club. It was an outdoor fitting on real turf using Trackman data. During the session, the fitter immediately commented, “Oh, I see the problem,” and confidently fit me into extra stiff shafts and 3 degrees upright. He seemed sure about the recommendation.
Here’s where I’m struggling:
• I haven’t received the clubs yet, but I’ve been using my home simulator in the meantime.
• My iron swing speeds never get above 90 mph—usually low to mid 80’s
• From what I can see on shaft fitting charts (especially for Project X LZ 6.5 shafts he fitted me for), I seem to fall between regular and stiff, nowhere near extra stiff.
• As a test, I switched a second set of irons to extra stiff shafts, and I’m now hitting them about 10-20 yards shorter per iron (especially longer irons)
Some background:
• The fitter has a great reputation and has been doing fittings at my club for 7+ years.
• The club hosts multiple brand fittings (Ping, Taylormade, etc.) throughout the year.
• The head pro said this guy has only had one unhappy customer in all that time.
So my question is:
In what situation would a player with mid-80s iron swing speed be fit into extra stiff shafts? Is there something I’m missing or not understanding about flex fitting? Should I be concerned or wait until I get the new clubs and see how they actually perform?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts or similar experiences!
I couldn’t add the video to my other post so I created a new one with video loaded to see my swing for reference. He fitted me into Project x LZ 6.5 shafts and Taylormade Qi irons. Just not sure if I have the speed to load these. I did pick up a set of p790’s as I hit those ok too but not as good as the Qi’s. Figured I might one day hit a mixed bag (Qi 4-7, 8-A p790, type thing).

If your dispersion is a lot better, can’t you just club up some?
Based on speed alone, it kinda seems like a strange fit. I’m fitted for 6.5 low spins with a 7i ss that cruises around 94.
It’s probably worth a quick follow up with the fitter. Just go into the details you have here. “Maybe I’m overthinking it but with mid 80s ss and 7i carry in the 160s, I’m worried a shaft this heavy/stiff could be overkill.
They might have some really solid logic behind the recommendation. You are pretty big guy and I’m sure you could easily get into the 90s with some swing tweaks.
I’m gonna let someone else chime in about that shaft for you from specifications pov.
Personally I love the Qi’s. I’m a big TM guy myself….im also a tinkerer and would play with new club/set ups every day for experimenting. P790s are my current favorite tho, but I still play with my Qi’s as well.
I’ve noticed with fitters of all shapes and sizes, they can go down the wrong direction whether mixing up a client or just taking too much input from the player. I’ve also seen guys come in and whether it’s nerves or something…they end up not swinging their “normal” way and suddenly you’re fitting the wrong person.
I’m curious what he asked you about…as in what you were wanting more from new clubs. More distance? More forgiving? More/less spin?
Also the set your now testing with, are they standard outside of the shaft swap ?
I was never a fast swing speed player either, but I do have some stiff shafts in the bag because it doesn’t necessarily mean apples to apples. The kick/torque just work really well in those setups. So maybe he does have some sort of ninja fix for something he was seeing but I’d be real curious to know why he went that direction.
You are spending a lot of money and with a custom order, sooner the better. I’d maybe try and call him to clarify what he saw and just tell him you’re worried.
Worst case you’ll be in the same spot in 6 weeks with the wrong setup but you’ll know why he went down that route with you
If your swing has an extremely aggressive transition near the bottom of your arch that could be why
