Most golfers — and even many instructors — have completely misunderstood what a reverse pivot in the golf swing really is. In this video, I break down the truth behind one of the most damaging myths in golf instruction and how you can fix it with this move that takes literally 10 seconds to learn!
For decades, players have been told that any leftward movement, swaying, or turning off the lead side of the body equals a reverse pivot. But that’s not the full story. In this video I’ll show you step-by-step what a reverse pivot actually looks like, the real causes behind it, and how it’s destroying your consistency, balance, and ball striking.

This myth has ruined more golf swings for the last decades than any other lie in golf. And if you’re still teaching this as a reverse pivot, you’re part of the problem. For years, golfers and instructors have misdiagnosed this problem, and it’s killing your golf swing. All this misinformation has led so many people down a rabbit hole that doesn’t do them any good. Today, I’m going to set the record straight and we’re going to tell you exactly what a reverse pivot is, why it’s going to cause inconsistencies in your golf game, and how you can fix it to play your best golf. So, what is a reverse pivot? Well, let’s quickly define it. Reverse, backwards, forward, towards a target. Most people believe a reverse pivot is when the spine extends out of its flexion. Right? Flexion, forward bend, extension, backwards bend. The spine bends backwards as we turn and side bend to the left in the back swing. Too many people believe as soon as the spine goes this way, it causes the hip to kick that way. and in the down swing, it’s gonna make you fall back to the right and you’re going to struggle with contact and you’re not going to hit the ball very far. Well, I’m here to tell you that that extension of the spine happens in the best golfers out there. Just check out these six golf swings right here. Every single one of them has a spine that’s extended to either straight up and down or even leaning towards the target a little bit. None of them are a reverse pivot. I don’t classify a reverse pivot as the spine extending backwards. That is a necessity in the golf swing. I classify a reverse pivot as the weight moving to the right in the down swing. Golfers out there, you can see it on tour. Some of them move to the right a little bit. They all move back to the left in the down swing. Other golfers stay centered in their pivot and move left in the down swing. Others set a little more weight to the left, turn, extend, side bend, move left in the down swing. Just because my spine extends does not mean that I’m going to fall back to the right. Total myth, total fallacy. Here’s why it hurts your golf game. When our weight falls back at any point in the down swing, it takes the bottom of the golf swing and moves it backwards. When that happens, we’re going to hit the ground here or we’re going to have to do something to keep from doing that. Most of the time, the golfer bends the elbows and pulls the club to them, which can create top shots and thin shots and nothing that gets towards the target with any distance whatsoever. So, if we want to fix this, let’s get the weight moving to the left. Simple as that. get the weight moving left. I want the spine to turn, tilt, and extend. That means if I was to stand up, turn 90°, and then tilt over, my spine’s not over here in flexion over my right leg. It’s centered in my pivot. If I turned in flexion and then extended and then tilted over, I can make that move, too. We can get the golf ball to go straight. Neither one of those is a reverse pivot. So, quit calling this a reverse pivot. Otherwise, you’re calling the number one player in the world a person who has a reverse pivot. It’s complete bogus. So, when we want to hit shots more solid and get our weight moving to the left, let’s turn our back to the target, side bend to the left going back and let our spine extend so that our head in the middle of our shoulder stays in the middle of our body. I don’t want it to move over the right leg. When that happens, all that does is move the low point back and it actually can hurt your body over time. I don’t want you to hurt your body over time. I don’t want your golf swing causing an injury. I want you to be able to play golf until you die. Turning this direction leaves the body in flexion. The only way I can now get the club to the top is to bend my arms and separate my elbows. Now I’ve got a whole host of other problems. None of which are any good or any consistent. You might get lucky and hit one good shot every 10. Oh man, I piped it. Now I’ve got to do that every time. What about the other nine that we hit behind it or we miss the ball completely? There’s no consistency in that. Side bend to the left. Extend the spine. Keep the weight centered and then move it left coming down. My contact is really good every single time I do that. It makes things predictable. That’s not a reverse pivot. That’s just sound fundamentals. And because my spine is working the way it’s supposed to, that will never hurt my back. I can play golf forever because my spine is protected. That’s the whole point. If I can swing within my natural range of human motion, I’m never going to hurt myself. But as soon as we start staying in flexion and we get the top of the chest over the right foot, now I have to go back this way really far. When you’re young and you’re healthy and your body’s not injured, you can make that move, but over time that breaks down. So you don’t fix a reverse pivot by getting the chest to the right in the back swing. You fix a reverse pivot by learning how to move everything to the left coming down. You don’t fix a reverse pivot by moving the weight to the right just to have to move it back to the left. That’s another variable you now have to time. We don’t fix a reverse pivot by kicking the hip to the right to extend. We turn, tilt, extend our hips, our shoulders, and our spine. of which when you do it correctly, I should be able to draw a line from my right ankle to my right shoulder and from the top of my spine to my left foot. It should make an A-frame like on a house. I’m now in balance. My upper body is on top of my lower body. There’s no shoulders and weight to the right. There’s no shoulders to the left and then the weight falling back in the down swing. It can’t do that. The weight’s always got to move to the left. Turn side bend to the left for a right-hander. Extend the spine. Keep your center of your shoulders in the middle of your body as you make your back swing and not get your shoulders over here. You’ll be doing just fine. You’ll hit the ball more solid. You’ll be able to make a longer back swing. you’ll enjoy your golf game a lot better. Make sure like, comment, subscribe. Tell me what you liked about this video.
