Induction video profiling the career of Northwestern Ontario Sports
Hall of Fame 1991 Inductee Harry Tuckwell
Harry Tuckwell was born around the turn of the century and came to Fort William in 1923. Although successful as a hockey player with Winnipeg and Fort William teams from 1913 to 1930, it was in the sport of rowing that Harry Tuckwell left his mark on the sports heritage of Northwestern Ontario. Involved with the Fort William rowing club from 1927 until his death in 1965, Harry Tuckwell built the club into a powerhouse. He coached Cruz to two Henley titles in 1938 and four Northwestern International Rowing Association Grand Aggregate titles between 31 and 39. He served as president of both the FWRC and the NWIRA. He also acted as a referee, judge, and official at numerous International Rowing Association regatas. In 1981, he was awarded the Centennial Award from the Canadian Amateur Rowing Association for his contributions to the development of rowing in Canada. In 1967, he was postumously awarded the George Row Memorial Trophy as a contributor to the building of sport. Harry Tuckwell passed away in 1965 and is represented tonight by his son Paul who has traveled to join with us in enshrining his father’s name in the Hall of Fame. Please welcome Paul Tuckwell.
