MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – One of our nation’s oldest junior golf tournaments wraps up its 78th consecutive year of drives, chips and putts Thursday.
“It’s been awesome,” said junior golfer Barnes Garrett. “I’ve had a really good time. The course is in good condition, and I’m just having fun.”
An army of Memphis volunteers presented the Overton Park Junior Open this week on the nine-hole course renovated in 2022.
Dozens of young players ages seven to 16 teed it up on the Overton course, where generations of Memphis golfers have learned the game.
“I’ve played in it for four years,” said James Miller, another young golfer. “It’s a fun little, hopefully, four-day tournament.”
Retired PGA and Champions Tour pro Lauren Roberts handed medals to the youngsters. For many, this was their first taste of tournament golf.
“I just love to see these kids who love to play golf and kids from all over the city getting together to play,” said retired PGA Tour pro Loren Roberts. “I think it’s great on a classic, perfect kids’ nine-hole golf course to play on.”
