And back in the days when I was young, this was only only a dream, a dream of the dream because it was so far away where I’m from. So, um it’s all um I’m just living them my my dreams, trying to become a better tennis player, but mostly a better person. So, thank you so much. I appreciate it. [Music] [Applause] [Music] The Adam Gold Show starts right now. And as you can probably guess, I’m not Adam Gold. Tim Donnelly here sitting in for Adam Victoria producing the show. So you will have one familiar voice. Yes, there it is. I’m here. That’s the one. Uh that also some some audio there from uh from Wimbledon over the weekend which S Alcarez potential rivalry may be a theme theme throughout the show, but we can get to themes later cuz right now it is time to get it started. Let’s get it started. Let’s get it started here. Let’s get it started. Let’s get it started. We are just nine days away from training camp for the Carolina Panthers. I know. Nine days. What? Which is both like it’s tomorrow and 10 10 months from now, right? It is both close and it’s like December 21st to a kid on Christmas. Like you’re you’re off school. Yep. But you still got a long way to go. Close by far. Uh, so it is still list season and ESPN has been dragging this out one position at a at a per day. Um, but they are ranking positions top 10 at every position one per day. Uh, and the reason why I bring it up is because this is not just puristical. This is not Buzzfeed. This is not, you know, hey, we pulled our Twitter followers. Uh, ESPN has anonymously pulled NFL executives, meaning front office members, coaches, and scouts, right? So, people that have dedicated their lives to evaluating players uh have all turned in or at least the ones pulled have turned in their top 10, which they then use to rank the top 10 in the league. And uh today, right, they want to start the week off with a bang as quarterback day. Oh boy, let’s go. So, so they have their top 10. Yeah. Then they have their honorable mentions. Oh, then they have their also receiving votes. Okay. participation award. So, I feel like Panther fans just got a little like when you say top 10, yeah, all right, Bryce isn’t top 10. He’s not top 10. But then you go, well, there’s there’s some honorable mentions and you’re like, well, he’s probably not. He’s probably not an then you go, but there’s the also receiving votes. Okay, he’s probably he should be in the also receiving votes, right? Likely. Like, I’m being reasonable here. Uh, I am here to break everybody’s heart. Oh, no. There are 10 in the top 10. Obviously, there are two honorable mentions. There are six additional uh players that received votes. Good for what you could logically come up with as a top eight team. Mhm. Right. It’s It’s like when the college football polls come out and they have all the also receiving votes at the end and you can count, right? Top 25 and 1 2 3 4 5. All right. We’re 31st. We’re 31st. Right. Uh, if you logically take that as a top 18, Bryce Young is not in the top 18. Yikes. Now, we can do some quick math, right? 32 teams in the league. That would say that as of right now, based on the people that have dedicated their lives to evaluating players, he is not a top half of the league quarterback. And that’s even with the golden shine of the finish last year where, you know, postbenching he played significantly better. Now, there’s there’s two ways to handle this. Cry. That I mean, three ways. Three three ways to handle it. First, get get right. Let your emotions get out, right? It’s okay to be emotional. Go nuts. Um, but and I thought about doing this, right? Ranting and raving about the disrespect r and looking at players and and finding the weird statistical arguments that you could make, right? Cuz you can make numbers say anything you want if you work hard enough about why the players above them on the list shouldn’t be above them. But I don’t think I’m going to do that. I’m I’m going to look internally. I’m going to look at Panther fans. We need to maybe look in the mirror. I think it might be us. And I think I I think they might be right. Yeah. Now, first of all, I’m going to read the names above him on the list just so you know what we’re dealing with. Uh I’ll go top 10 first. And these are the ones that you’re you’re not going to realistically argue with. Uh Pat Mahomes, Josh Allen, Burrow, Lamar, uh Jaden Daniels, fifth. That’s maybe a little high for him. Uh, Matt Stafford, Justin Herbert, Jared Goff, Jaylen Herz, Baker Mayfield. That’s the top 10. Yeah. Honorable mentions. There were two of them. CJ Strad, and Jordan Love. Yeah. Also receiving votes, Kyler Murray, Brock Perie, Dak Prescott, Aaron Rogers, Tua Tongo, Valoa, and Bo Nicks. Ooh. Okay. Now, we could argue some of those, but I don’t think we should. Yeah. Here’s what I think has happened to us. Victoria, you know by now. I’ve I’ve sat in for Adam Gold here on the show enough. I name my theories. Yes. I think I think we’re caught up in what I call uh for for me personally, it’s it’s the Allen Robinson tunnel vision, aka the fantasy football tunnel vision. Here’s here’s what that is. Um I think it was 2015, maybe 2014. Uh this is kind of heyday for for Panther fans there. Yeah, it was. But Allen Robinson was on the the Jaguars, the the receiver Alen Robinson and he and Blake Bortles. Uh they basically won me a fantasy championship. Oh, look at that. But here’s the thing. They were always behind by a bunch, so they were always throwing a lot. And Allen Robinson led the league in touchdowns. And for that year, I got so caught up in because Allen Robinson was winning me money, right? That’s my guy. When he wasn’t included in like the top five wide receivers in the NFL, I was furious. Yeah. And I had arguments, right? Well, you don’t He had He beat his guy on this one and Blake Bortles under threw him and he caught this, but they called it back for a holding. He had 14 touchdowns. It should have been 22. But what I didn’t do was go look at all the other receivers and watch every play of theirs cuz they weren’t on my fantasy team, of course. So, I didn’t go and watch every play of DeAndre Hopkins or every play of these other guys and go, “Oh, wait. Guess what? he was open on a play and the quarterback didn’t find him and he had a touchdown called back on a penalty as well and and he did this and and he and this was a missed call and that happened but because he was on my fantasy team I gave my guy all the context in the world right oh he had 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns but it really should have been 120 touchdowns because I watched every play and I didn’t for the other guys and their their stats should have been better too so it’s I think that’s happening here with Bryce cuz we’re sitting here going, “Sure, his his counting stats weren’t in the top half, but you know, halfway through the year, the the switch flipped and he played better and he had a should have been a game-winning touchdown pass against Philly, but Xavier Leette dropped it and and he actually walked off the field, you know, ahead or tied in x amount of games and he had this and he had that.” Now, none of it actually happened, right? None of them actually led to wins. But all of that is reasons why he should be in in the top 14 or whatever you have him as. But what we’re not doing is watching every game of every other quarterback and understanding that they also had passes dropped. They also had bad play calls. They also had games where their defense gave up a billion and they lost even though the offense played well. We we basically what I’m saying here is a lot of that comes out in the wash and I don’t think Bryce Young at any point in his career has looked like a top half of the league quarterback for any extended period of time. Now you know you want to say six games is an extended period of time. I disagree. Right. Consistency is the is the part of being a quarterback. Consistency is quite frankly the most important part of being a quarterback. Yeah. So until he proves he can do it over a season, I wouldn’t expect anyone who who seriously evaluates quarterbacks or seriously evaluates football players to put him in the top half of the NFL now. Like let’s be real, like you want him to be right when I I’ll be I’ll be real. The first thing I did when I brought up this list before I I looked through and went, “Wow, Jaden Daniels top five.” before I noticed anything else. Boom. Control or uh command right on the Apple computer. Command F. Search Carolina. Search Price, right? Cuz I just wanted to see if he was there. Yeah. Kind of like the uh you know the the um like superhero movie that gets nominated for best picture. Mhm. They know they’re not going to win, right? They know they don’t deserve to win, but I’ll be darned if they that director that director didn’t sit there and and think who should I thank just in case, right? Right. My my mom, my dad need to thank the cast, the crew, like they were ready just cuz you’re hoping for it. Uh Bryce Young’s not a top half of the NFL quarterback. You can hope for it, right? Just like the animated movie thinks they’re going to win best picture, right? Uh he’s not a top half of the NFL quarterback. And and you can take my word for it or the executives, the coaches, the scouts that anonymously put players, even super old Aaron Rogers, even always hurt to its own Valoa, even brand new Bo Knicks, uh, all of those guys ranked higher than Bryce. And to be completely honest, I think it’s good that the list stopped at 18. Yeah, cuz it probably wouldn’t be in the top 20, you know. It might have been like 25. Yeah, it might have been 25. I mean, that would be a real cold glass of water to the face. Big time. Big time. The Adam Gold show continuing here on uh Let’s Get It Started. The All-Star game’s coming up. Major League Baseball Allstar Game. Jacob Miserowski to the All-Star game. This is This is controversial. This is This is the thing that people are upset about. Uh now, you may say, “Jacob Miserowski, who what?” That’s that’s that’s probably a good reaction. Do you know why? Because he has he’s a a starting pitcher. Uh he was a injury or a a replacement player to fill in for a pitcher who uh couldn’t be in the All-Star game due to the the his start schedule. Um he has five career Major League Baseball starts. Wow. Five one hand. Four and one uh with a 2.83 erra. He has pitched 25 and two/3 innings and he is going to be in the All-Star game. This infuriated more than a few people inside baseball. Makes sense. Uh the Philadelphia Phillies who have probably I said probably two more deserving pitchers that weren’t selected to the All-Star game were furious. Yeah, absolutely furious. Players using bad language to describe the selection. Uh and old school baseball people equally as furious. Um this breaks the record, by the way. Last year, the record was set by Paul Skins for fewest amount of starts for a starting pitcher to make the All-Star game. It was 11. Uh, Miserowski’s making it with five. Now, here’s the the the hard part. There are some good arguments for putting Mizowski in in the All-Star game. He is electric. In 25 and 2/3 innings, he has thrown 89 pitches at least 100 mph. Wow. and and he dabbles in the upper numbers, the 102s, the 103s. Very good. That’s fun to watch. Mhm. He has 33 strikeouts in that 25 and two/3s innings. It’s fun to watch. He is one of the the best young players in the game from a talent perspective. Uh he doesn’t have the accomplishment. He did not earn the All-Star game. That’s the question. Cuz the All-Star game, matter of fact, I’ll put it this way. The baseball All-Star event from home run derby to All-Star game and beyond, it’s the last good All-Star game. Although Four Nations did did give it a good run with with the NHL. Oh, that was so good. But that’s kind of I don’t even know if that that’s multiple games. It’s a whole thing. It’s it’s it’s a different beast. Uh it is also entertainment and the All-Star game and the events, the home run derby and everything else, which is tonight. True. Uh you can hear right here on 999 the fan is or on 999 the fan. If you’re in the triangle, check other markets. Check your your listings. Um, here’s the the the part. Major League Baseball needs to make new young fans. The All-Star game and the Home Run Derby are the best on-ramps for that, right? I I can tell you my baseball fandom started with Ken Griffy Jr. backwards hat in the home run derby. Right. My I I remember watching All-Star games more than I remember watching regular season games growing up, and I was about as dieh hard a kid could be uh as far as being a baseball fan. So, if you tell me what’s more exciting, like a reliever from the the Phillies matching up with uh the best hitters of the game or Jacob Miseroski, the Miz, as they call him, throwing 102 mph against the best players in the game. The Miz is more entertaining. You’re going to make more fans that way. So, baseball’s not necessarily dumb. They’re business smart for putting this guy in. Here’s my contention. Okay, I I try not to just be a problems guy. I try to be a solutions guy. Here’s my solution. make the All-Star game mean nothing. Everyone always wants to add stakes to the All-Star game or, you know, uh make the financial uh incentive to win more, make home field of the World Series, like I you want people to play. I I want it to mean nothing. And here’s why. If it matters, you have to treat it like it matters. If an all-star game selection matters, meaning if we’re going into the Hall of Fame or we’re debating who should make the Hall of Fame and you go, “This guy’s an 11time All-Star, he’s a seventime all-star, that guy’s only a three-time all-star.” Like, if you’re going to use all-star as something that signifies good play, then you have to honor those that earned it. You can’t put in Jacob Miseroski, The Miz, with five starts. You have to go find someone that that has a more substantial body of work that earned it. lean into it. If if uh there are contract incentives that say if you make the All-Star game, you get a million dollars, you get an All-Star game, you get another $500,000, then you have to select them on merit because they’re they’re there to motivate good play. You have to select it on merit. If you remove all of that, if we admit that being selected to the All-Star game is not an indication of who’s having the best season, it’s you’re one of the bigger brands that people want to watch the most and we can make uh more fans out of young people by you being included in the game and we no longer use them in Hall of Fame debates. We no longer use them in legacy debates when we no longer use them in contract incentives. Matter of fact, ban it from being a contract incentive. If if we do all that then yeah put Miseroski in. If there’s a player who was hurt like say uh uh who’s the big is Show the biggest star in baseball now? Aaron Judge Bulls. Yeah. Say those guys were hurt for most of the first half and only played in 10 games. Who cares? Put them in the game. They’ll draw the more the the bigger crowds. But if it matters if we are saying these are the best players of the first half of the season, Miseroski can’t be anywhere near the game. I don’t care if he throws 105 106 miles an hour. He can’t. It’ll be fun to watch and I still will, but it it it feels like something I don’t know inauthentic is happening if you’re putting guys like that in. And here’s the other thing. Uh last point, there are the all-star starters the or the all-star original selections. Then guys start turning it down, right? Oh, I tweaked a hammy. I want to rest it or oh, I’m a pitcher that that had a start on Sunday. I can’t pitch on Wednesday uh or Tuesday, whenever it is. Um then the alternate should not get credit for an all-star appearance if you weren’t good enough to be one of the original selections. And if they are, then you have to give the all-star appearance to everyone that turned it down, even the people in the middle. cuz that frustrates me about football when they announced like the three AFC quarterbacks and then the next thing we hear is like uh who was it for the Ravens when when uh Tyler Huntley when Lamar got hurt? Tyler Huntley made it made a Pro Bowl and they didn’t announce the 10 people between that also turned it down for Huntley to get the call, right? So Huntley gets to be, hey, I’m I’m a Pro Bowl quarterback. Meanwhile, guys that actively turn down the Pro Bowl might not get to say it that year. Yeah, like if if you turn it down, if replacements get the credit, then if you turn it down, you should get the credit. But that’s just me being a probably in too deep nerd. Uh the Adam Gold show. I’m Tim Donnelly sitting in for Adam. Uh let’s keep let’s get it started rolling to the next Cooper Flag. One and done at Duke, two and done in the summer league. Uh two games and and the Mavericks are shutting them down. Andre Snellings uh on the Mav shutting down Cooper flag for the remainder of the summer league. This is what he had to say. Cooper showed everything. If if anybody was needed to see something, he showed it in this summer league. In the first game, his shot was off, but he did everything else. You know, he was rebounding, he was running point guard, he was he made the the game- saving uh block shot, you know, he was just kind of everywhere. And then this last game, he didn’t necessarily do as much all around, but he dropped 31 points. He was scoring from everywhere. His his shot was on, and he also had another big like uh block shot and then uh dunk at the other end combo. So, you know, I I think I think they they saw what they needed to see from him. Yeah, there was nothing I needed to see from Cooper in summer league. Uh, so I guess I saw everything I needed to see because I didn’t need to see anything. Uh, I genuinely think for a player like Cooper Flag, summer league is just about getting used to to I mean I like almost the attention of the NBA, but he’s already I mean it’s not like Duke was some offthegrid little followed team in college. Even his high school teams covered more than like the Timberwolves. Uh, here’s the thing that stood out to me though. His floor is still incredibly high. Okay? And I watched both games. the the entirety of that he played in summer league. Uh his floor is still incredibly high. The game’s not too fast for him. He wasn’t out there like, “Oh no, nothing translates.” Like he’ll still make really good basketball plays. Uh the interesting part is Cooper said multiple times and his actions backed it up that the Mavericks wanted him to be aggressive as a scorer because one of the more impressive things at him at Duke and and you know being in in this market and being in this state so watching all of the teams in college basketball every game like you you really get a feel for their games. Uh, one of the more impressive things was he never felt like he had to be the top scorer, right? He felt like if somebody else has it going, I’m going to do everything else on the floor and get them the ball. So, they’ll score their 20, they’ll score their 25, and I will lead the team in assists and blocks and steals and rebounds and close outs and defensive rotations and deflections and everything else. Um, but that was not the case in summer league. He was going out there as if the team told him, “Listen, you’re playing with summer leaguers. You’re not out there with Klay Thompson and Anthony Davis and eventually uh Kyrie Irving and Derek Lively and and Daniel Gaffy. You’re not out with these guys. So, you know, if you pass it to them, they’re going to miss. So, go get yours.” which I I have not seen him do in until like he had a 42-point game in college, but that was very much like the first couple shots were in rhythm and then you could see him say, “Oh, okay. The the the hoop looks like a hula hoop to me right now and this is going to go this is going to be a good day. I’m I’m going to be aggressive.” He was not letting the game come to him at all. He was chasing points, which is weird. He had 21 shots, 21 field goal attempts in each game. Now, it’s important to know context. Summer league, each quarter is two minutes shorter than the NBA. So, 12minute quarters in in NBA games, 10 in summer league. 8 minutes total shorter. Not huge, but it’s that’s a decent amount. 48 to 40 minutes. Uh Shay Gilis Alexander led the NBA in shot attempts per game this past year in an 8-minute longer game at 21.8 shots per game. No one else in the NBA averaged more than 21. In both summer league games, Cooper Flag had 21 shots. And again, it wasn’t the game coming to him. He didn’t shoot above 50% in either. It wasn’t like, “Oh, I’ve got it going today, fellas. I’m shooting a lot.” Uh, he he let it fly. I didn’t I still don’t I’m still not sure if the top scorer part of his game will exist for the next few years. Like, I I think that’s the part that’s going to develop last. And when I say top score, I mean like if he ever becomes a 25 point per game player, I think that’s a ways away. I I’m not sure Dallas is as uh as patient as I am cuz I’m thinking he can come in, he can lead an offense, he can distribute, he can do all this other stuff while he figures out his scoring niche. Uh it looks like at least in in summer league the mandate from the coaching staff was figure out how you can score right now. Wow. Wasn’t the most efficient performance for him. He could get to the line. That’s in game two. That’s really what he showed. Poor guy. He hasn’t even figured out how to be an adult yet. I say this a lot. He has he has the exact same he cuz you know fresh face shaved at Duke. Y he now has the chin the chin goatee. always starting just just the chin, which is exactly I’m not go I’m not kidding at all. Exactly what I had my sophomore year of college. Yeah, because it was the only place that any facial hair would grow was just chin. We had no mustache, nothing on the sides, like no sideburns even, but I could just on the straight on the chin, right? And I’d be darned if I wasn’t like rocking it. Hey everybody, look at this. Guess who has to shave now? Tim, what are you looking up at? Nothing. I I will not show everybody, but I have a there’s a roster picture from my time at Delaware uh where it’s just the chin whiskers are in full effect. Nice. That’s actually a good reminder that Cooper Flag is like the age of an incoming freshman in college. Yep. And they’re saying, “No, go be the leading scorer on the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA.” Yeah. Crazy. Uh last one here for you. Go ahead. There you go. Uh center Alcarez Wimbledon final center lands the first big punch in the rivalry from center towards Alcarez. Alcarz had won five straight uh almost doubled them up in in Grand Slam titles before uh almost doubled them up before uh Alcraz lost in this one. So now it’s they both have three of the Grand Slams, three of the four. They’re one away from completing the career grand slam. Uh, Alcarez has two more, right? He’s got two Wimbledons and I think two uh French opens as well. Uh, and then he has one US open. Sinner now has an Australian, a US and a Wimbledon with no French. Um, here’s here’s my concern and we’re going to have this is going to be a theme throughout the show, theme throughout the uh the day. We are forcing this rivalry. We are forcing it. And here’s and what I mean by that is everyone’s like the next great rivalry. It’s Mack andro Borg. It’s it’s a Agassy Sampress. It’s this. It’s that. I think we’re forcing it because we just don’t ha we don’t have good individual rivalries right now in in sports individuals. Like there’ll always be teams, right? They’ll always be uh Duke Carolina. There’ll always be Carolina State. They’ll always be Red Sox, Yankees, Ohio State, Michigan, whatever. whatever. I don’t think we have good individual rivalries. And because of that, when there’s two players that just are great and they happen to be like near each other on their timeline, it’s like that’s the rivalry. Pick a side. We have to hate each other. And I’m going like, I think they like each other. I think like there’s way too much respect there for it to be a rivalry. Not saying you can’t be great at the same time, but I I started looking it up and I know we’re we’re up against it, but we’re we’re going to let this ride a bit. Uh I started looking it up and I and I I I typed in best individual rivalries thinking I I missed something. And you get all the greats of the past. You get Magic Bird, you get Ali Frasier, you get Tiger Phil, right? You you get all of these great rivalries. And then I was like, well, you know, you’re scrolling through, you’re at like number 50 and there’s still not a current rival. So I was like, “All right, let’s current individual rivalries and you end up with Crosby Ovuchkin. You end up with LeBron Steph, you end up with like Momes Josh Allen.” And I’m going, none of those feel like fierce and bitter rivals. No, they are great players who happen to be playing at the same time, but they almost all seem like like buddies kind of in a weird way. Go to the bar after the game. Exactly. Uh I think this is this might be my oldest old man take is I need more hate in my rivals. Yeah. Makes it spicy. I I need somebody to to dislike the other. I need somebody to say something a little little snarky. This is why I love Will Wade for State. Yes. I think he’s perfect for NC State. Yes. And and I I first of all that needs to end up like he’s got to win some uh because he’s brand new and we just don’t know, right? And rivalries until both sides are winning aren’t rivalries, which is why the center deal uh at Wimbledon kind of accelerated this conversation. But uh but yes, like you need somebody as and I don’t even know if it’s like a you need a bad call or you need a a uh you know a hard foul. You need something that ignites it cuz right now uh I I think and by the way I know the elephant in the room that everybody’s screaming at me. Uh I think we’re doing the same thing with Caitlyn Clark and Angel Reese. Yeah, I was going to say like we’re so thirsty for just two people that don’t like each other to be rivals that were like these two. Oh my goodness. Did you see it? Mhm. Except I don’t know. I ain’t She did the handwave thing. This is the new Magic Bird. And I’m going like there has have both sides won. Uh do they have the same level? Like Magic and Bird seemed like they didn’t like each other. They both won championships. They both won MVPs. They were similar sizes. They guarded each other in certain situations. Like that that all needs to be there to be a real rivalry. Just cuz we don’t have one doesn’t mean we don’t have to like force round pegs into square holes or square pegs into round holes just to make it work. Like I’m all for appreciating greatness. Center Alcraz and I know center has some controversies with with positive tests and things but like as great as Alcarez is like and I appreciate greatness for me to get drawn in as a casual tennis fan like somebody’s got to say something. And until that happens, so there you go. That’s We’re just getting it started. That was just getting it started right on a Monday. On a Monday here on the Adam Gold show. I’m Tim Donnelly sitting in for Adam Gold. Uh when we come back, even though Adam’s not here, I know we got to touch on some Canes. Uh the Canes, there’s a hidden part of the Keandre Miller deal that hasn’t been talked about enough. Elliot Friedman brought it up. We touch on it next. Adam Gold. Is he married to a person or just himself? Ah, cuz that I feel like that’s very Aaron Rodgery of him to have the twist in there. It’s a very good question. I don’t know. We still don’t know if it’s a person. Would he get down on one knee to ask himself over a uh over an Iawaska? Yes. The Adam Gold Show. The Adam Gold Show. Partying like a rock star on a Monday. On a Monday. Brings me right back to high school. Uh I used to do the the uh morning announcements on the TVs in the room in high school. Like I was the little anchor guy. Nice. And that was our intro song. Oh, okay. There you go. That we were a cool high school. Weird version. Yeah, it was literally just the chorus, but that was our that was our like, you know, instead of wake up, ours was party, huh, right? That’s one way to do it. We were so cool. Uh, maybe not. Uh, the Adam Gold show. I’m Tim Donnelly sitting in for Adam today. And uh I thought this was interesting and I didn’t even think that that it was a question until I saw this this uh conversation started. So Elliot Freriedman, you know him, covers uh the the NHL nationally, 32 thoughts podcast and articles are are fantastic. Uh on his 32 thoughts podcast talking about the Carolina Hurricanes, uh he said, and I have the quote here, “I’m not surprised the Hurricanes traded Scott Morrow. They’ve got a lot of D. he wasn’t ready for what the Hurricanes do right now. And so, so Scott Mororrow was included in the Keandre Miller trade uh defenseman. We’ll we’ll explain kind of the full thing with Mororrow, but the reaction being like there were there were more uh Kane’s fans and there there were more hockey fans saying like, I can’t believe they gave up Morrow or oh, you know, I I thought they could have got it done without Morrow than I than I ever expected. And and here’s here’s the thing. Trading away Scott Morrow doesn’t mean you don’t like Scott Morrow. It doesn’t mean that you watched two playoff games that were rough for Scott Morrow, right? Because he was called up during the the postseason after Chatfield got hurt. You didn’t watch those two. Eric Tolski, Rod Brendmore didn’t watch those two games, throw their hands up and go, “This guy will never be good at anything ever again.” That doesn’t that’s not what it means. It means you draft players that you think are the best. You develop them as good as you can. You turn them into assets that are as valued as possible. And you use them however you need to to improve the team. Uh here’s here’s here’s my my my contention. And actually, Victoria, maybe we’ll start doing this. Maybe I’ll pitch it to Adam and say, “You have to do this on your show.” Okay. Uh this is second. I know nobody cares about my fantasy team, but the a lot of my theories start in in fantasy football. Then I bring them out, right? Uh, my fantasy football league has a has a thing called my guys, right? And and basically what that means is if I tell you that uh I I have Tedo McMillan on my dynasty team. Shout out to the Carolina Panthers. If I if I tell you that that McMillan is one of my guys, you know that to trade for him, you’re going to have to give me the world, right? Like like this guy is he might as well be an adopted member of my family, right? Like like I know there’s a everybody has a price, everybody has a number, but like ah he’s one of my guys. you’re going to have to pay extra. And and the thing is, you can’t have a full roster of my guys, right? You It loses all credibility if you’re like, “Well, every starter on my team is a my guy and most of the backups cuz then because then no one’s overpaying for anything, right?” So, I I’m completely okay with certain players, certain prospects in the system like being the apple of your eye. you you you will openly admit I value them more than I should because that’s how I am with a few guys, right? It’s like I understand like they’ll they’ll make me a trade offer and I’ll go that is a like a generous offer and I am still going to turn it down because this is my dude. Yeah. I think you need to limit it to like three or may maybe three on the big league club and and one prospect who are untouchable, right? Like if if they’re part of a trade that goes elsewhere, you get to be mad. You get to be comp uh surprised. You you get you get to be uh flabbergasted, whatever you want, but you can’t have you can’t fall in love with every player at every level of the system. Scott Morrow uh was drafted in 2021, went and played three years at UMass. Shout out to the uh the the Minutemen. built his value there, left his name all over the UMass record book, gets called up, right? Does the the late late season call up thing after signing as entry level, plays a full year in the AHL, 14 games in the regular season with the Canes, two in the postseason, named to the AHL all prospect team, just built built built built built value, then gets packaged with uh what was it? A second round pick in 2026, a conditional first round pick in 26 or 27, and Morrow to acquire Keandre Campbell. That’s not punting on Scott Morrow. That’s not saying this dude didn’t do what he was supposed to do. That’s saying we built up his value enough to go get a 65 215lb guy that we want to sign to an 8-year contract extension and become part of the core. If Morrow’s legacy is he became onethird of a player that becomes a core member and helps you win a cup, that’s a great legacy to leave. Yeah. And that’s not to say that Morrow, you know, I’m I’ll even root for I I won’t root for the team he’s on, but I I’ll even root for him within the Rangers because I think there’s more space for him there. Morrow has potential. I don’t believe the Canes would have uh promoted him as quick, trusted him in a postseason if they didn’t think he had potential. But with Miller and Carolina, there isn’t space for Morrow to get the reps he needs at the NHL level. Who are you? Who are you taking out? Right. The the the Nikesian’s not coming out. Obviously Slavven, obviously Walker, obviously Chatfield. Gospear’s too valuable on special teams. Now you throw in Miller. There’s nowhere for him to go. So, it’s good asset management. Hey, we had a player that’s shown potential that we’ve built up through through the last couple years of of athlete development. uh there’s value there, but we have guys blocking him from making it to the big. So, let’s cash in his value in another way. It’s why, and I said this before the NHL draft and and with the Major League Baseball draft going on as we speak, those are the two sports that I don’t care what the situation is, you draft best player available. And if you get it right and the player’s good, figure out how to get value from that player later. It’s too hard in baseball and hockey to even select future big leaguers. So, you don’t worry about, oh, we’ve got we’re strong on the blue line. We can’t be drafting and developing defenseman because where are they going to go? No. If you draft and develop a really good defenseman, you’ll be able to cash that value in in some way, either by trading away one of the guys you have at the big league club or trading away the prospect more. I’m not surprised the Hurricanes traded Scott Morrow, which is what Elliot Freeman said. Implies that some are surprised. And I’m going, how? Why? Where? That like you have, you know, eight NFL or NHL defenseman. You can only play six at a time. Trade one of them or or even conjoin, right? Take two of them and make turn them into one better one. Like, that’s asset management. That’s playing the game. Shout out to Eric Tolski. Good job. I know. Like they were saying on Twitter, let him cook. Let him cook. They even put the little the little chef’s hat. That’s awesome. Let him cook. Every time I hear that now, I just think let Russ cook with the the was Russell Wilson in the NFL. Oh, yeah. Or maybe maybe let him cook a little less. Yeah. More high knees. Less is high knees on the planet. All right, let’s not turn this into just making fun of Russell Wilson. And now here’s you know that’s my shameless self-promotion. Now I’m going to do something for you on my show 999 the fan the drive uh 3 to six. We’re giving away your weight in meat. Yes. Whatever whatever you’re you weigh you can win that many pounds of meat. Uh, all you have to do is text in beef bef to 919-860-5326 for your shot at becoming a finalist every day this week at 4 o’clock. So, I guess what you have to do is you have to text in beef to 919-860-5326 and then make sure your phone is on and you can answer it at 4:00. Be ready each day this week. Uh, if you answer it, we bring you on air, you tell us how much you weigh, and then you are a finalist. Uh, we’ll pick one of those 10 finalists randomly. uh on July 21st, so a week from today. Uh give them a call and they will win their weight in meet. And you can’t lie about your weight either, right? Because there’s a scale. So like you can’t say if you win the whole thing, if you win the whole thing, 185 pounds and you’re like 185 pounds, you know, that’d be a difficult one to explain. Uh it’s brought to you by the NC Beef Council. Beef, it’s what’s for dinner. But but I mean this is where you might you might want to obviously you call in, right? You send in the text beef BEF to 919-8605326. And then you might want to call your offensive line friends, right? You you know what I’m talking about, right? You call the left tackles in your life and say, “Hey, you should text in beef to 919-860-5326. If you win, your prize is even better than mine.” Right? So, if you if you got a a pulling guard in your life somewhere, uh give them a little hat tip, right? Let them know they’re giving away their weight and meat. Uh, with that being said, it is time for what do we got here? We got Oh, you’re darn right. We got one timer. What do you have for us, Victoria? Okay, so kicking things off. Well, first of all, you can um you can give us a one-time request on YouTube or you can at me on Twitter just to make sure that Tim or Adam doesn’t see it. So, it’s VA to the underscore with uh some, you know, whatever. So, I’m there. You’ll know who I am. I’m in the octagon. This one came from uh a listener, a good friend of ours. So, for our friends in Charlotte, what do y’all I guess both of us think about ketchup on hot dogs? I know I have an opinion about it. All right, go ahead. It’s not It’s actually not like a bad this or that. I like just a simple hot dog with ketchup, but the reason he brings this up is because Adam is completely against it. Like, I think he almost against ketchup on hot dogs. I think he takes it personally if you just want ketchup on. Okay, at least there’s a background story on that because I heard the question and went, I didn’t know this was a thing that anyone would be upset about. That’s why I wanted to explain it because Adam, for whatever reason, feels really strongly about mustard on hot dogs, which I’m glad that Rod Bindore and I agree. A hot dog with just ketchup is perfectly acceptable. I’m I’m going to be real here. All of the the food opinions confuse the heck out of me. I I don’t care what you do on your plate as long as I don’t have to eat it. Yeah. Like like you go you can go nut. You can put sugar on your hot dog. I don’t care. Uh you you could go find whatever’s in the fridge and make a meal. If you want to eat it, go nuts. Right. Uh now there are certain things like I’m sure I have some weird food food opinions that like I eat and you would think is weird, but I’m not making you eat it. So So let it rock. I I don’t I don’t get when people get mad at other people for what they eat. Here’s here’s the funny thing. So, this is a little random for this one timer. We had a discussion about ketchup on eggs. And for whatever reason, Adam’s okay with ketchup on eggs, but not on ketchup on eggs. Like, that’s what I’m like, no, I’ll have tomatoes in an omelette or scrambled eggs, but I don’t need like And I won’t judge you. If you want ketchup, that’s fine, but keep it for the hot. Would you do like a Tabasco? Sure. I’ll do a hot sauce if I want, you know, and scrambled eggs. But no, I like I’ll throw ketchup on an omelette if it’s if it’s if it if it needs it, if it calls for it. Maybe. Yeah. Hey, to each their own. So, Exactly. That’s where I K. But no, like I’ve I didn’t know anybody was anti- ketchup on hot dogs as like a stance. I know some people that just wouldn’t put it on, but I like as a you know, a campaign platform. feel some type of way about it. Little strange, Adam. Little strange. I know. I know. Well, so this one, not as strange and not as random, but William wants to know, uh, what do you think of Orlov’s recent comments in the media of him being unhappy here. I he can feel however he wants and and he can say it feels like a missed opportunity or feels like something was off or they didn’t believe in him. Right. The the whole you can go find the exact quote. It wasn’t complimentary at least of the canes. I do not get and this is another it’s kind of similar to like hating on people for their food like their choices. There’s almost never in life a situation where it is smart to publicly bash a former employee. Yeah. Or former employer, excuse me. Now, in private, if Orlav wants to call up his, you know, best friend, his siblings, his whoever, like whoever he vents to and go, they never believed in me. They I should have been skating on the top pair. Like, vent all you need. But publicly, it’s just smart to keep those those bridges clear, right? You don’t want to burn those bridges because who knows, right? Maybe, you know, the the Rod Brendmore’s best friend gets a head coaching job elsewhere. you’re trying to cling on, get one more year in the league, and and they’re interested in you, and the coach calls up the GM and go, “No, no, no, no, no, no. He talked bad about my guy, and I know my guy handles it well.” I just And and by the way, that’s true in in every industry. It’s not just not just uh in professional sports. I wouldn’t talk bad about a radio station I’ve worked for previously, even if there’s some some bosses I’ like I could I could say some things that they didn’t do great, but I would never do that because, you know, you you never know. You just you never know. Yeah. And and like go look at what Brent Burns said about the Carolina Hurricanes. You don’t even have to be that glowing about how everything was awesome. You don’t have to pretend it was all gumdrops and rainbows, but being negative, it just I don’t know what it accomplishes other than feels like you’re not really taking accountability for uh you know, the lack of success. We have time for one more. Absolutely. Oh, and so the first question, the person who presented it, they said they actually was asking because their guy Willie P from Charlotte, he comes on the show every now and again, uh, is super anti- ketchup on hot dogs. So, him and Adam are two peas in anti ketchup pod, I guess. I don’t know. So, so like here’s the question and and the listeners, either one of you, Willie or who’s the original uh question asker? Uh, Chef Wolf. Chef Wolf. Either of you can feel free to answer. Uh, if you’re anti- ketchups on hot dogs and you’re having people over and you’re grilling, right, it’s Fourth of July, it’s it’s a a nice summer Saturday. You’re calling everybody over. You got the slip and slide out. You got the cooler full of drinks. Are you not putting out ketchup despite the fact that you got burgers and dogs on the grill? Are you denying people’s option for ketchup? Because you’re like, you are against it as a stance because now you’re just inconveniencing people. Like I’m not a relish guy. If I if I have burgers and dogs on the grill. Sure. I’m I’m having relish for those that want to partake. Even if you don’t, it’s there. Exactly. It’s It’s Now, I probably don’t have for burgers and dogs, I probably don’t have like chocolate sauce, right? Like like it doesn’t make any sense there in the realm of reasonable. Are you teaching are you treating ketchup like chocolate sauce? Right. Because an elf here with spaghetti and chocolate sauce. No. Like I think that’s a little I think you’re I think you and Adam might be a little in the wrong Willie. Mhm. I know. Unless you you do just kind of you know grit and bear and say no, I’ll put out the ketchup even though I’m against it wholeheartedly. I’ve never seen ketchup haters on I mean I don’t know. I guess they like it on certain things but not hot dogs. Uh it all started. Is this how it always goes on the Adam Gold show? I’m Tim Donnelly sitting in for Adam today. We’ll be back with more coming up next. Questioning goalie interference calls since day one. The Adam Gold show on the North Carolina Sports Network. Adam Gold here for my friends at XGolf in Kerry. Dude, is there is there now we’re just talking baseball here for a second. Is there a like unspoken iciness between you and Adam because of Pete Crow Armstrong? Because because Adam, like myself, Mets fan, uh Pete Crow Armstrong in in the Mets system is where he kind of established himself as a top prospect and and the Mets traded him to the Cubs for like what a month of uh was it Jav Bayz? Uh and and now Pico Armstrong is an MVP candidate in the Cubs uh big league club and and the Mets are going like probably shouldn’t have given gotten rid of that guy. Well, Adam didn’t realize he came from the Mets. Oh, well then never mind. Maybe I’m just deeper in the I’m deeper in the weeds of Mets fandom. No, it’s fine because I told I was like, you know, he started with the Mets and he didn’t realize that for a rental. So, I know for a rental. Oh, man. Cub’s making good choices. Who is this team? I I um actually one of my buddies who’s also a Mets fan like one of his proudest moments uh and he brings it up often enough that I know about it is immediately after the trade that sent Pico Crow Armstrong away he tweeted out and he doesn’t have a ton of followers like it’s not like it was liked a bunch but he tweeted it out and tweets come with the time stamp so you know when he sent it. Oh yes. Uh I hate this trade. P Cro Po Armstrong is a future star. Uh and that that’s all he said and now it’s like see Uhhuh. I should be a baseball GM receipt. This is why you listen to me. Yes. Uh and yeah, that and you know, eight bucks will get you a cup of coffee. But uh but it I I would be a little mad if I had a Cubs fan in my life just celebrating every time he does something great because every single time you do it, all I would see is Yeah, we didn’t get anything. And he does a lot of great things, too. So, it’s just it’s a con. I knew he would. At least my buddy knew he would. Right. All right. The Adam Gold Show. I’m Tim Donnelly sitting in for Adam today representing the Mets while Adam is is is away and uh as as we start take two here in the hour. Um I want to revisit Bryce not making the top 18 quarterbacks. So uh for those of you just tuning in uh Bryce Young not on the list put out by ESPN today. Uh ESPN uh each day is putting out one position uh of top 10. And then to to reach these top 10s, they’ve pulled uh executives, front office executives, coaches, and scouts from across the league anonymously. They all submitted their top 10 at each position and then, you know, I assume, you know, 10 points for one, you know, nine points for two on down. They’ve decided, they’ve put them all together and come up with a top 10. Uh but when they release the list, they also add honorable mentions and then they add also receiving votes. So, if we take all the honorable mention, all the top 10 quarterbacks, today’s quarterback’s day, which is, you know, was revealed today. Top 10 quarterbacks, there were two honorable mentions and then there were six also receiving votes, so we can loosely call that a top 18. Uh, Bryce Young’s not in there. Now, earlier today, we discussed the the merits of his inclusion or not inclusion, and I I side on their right. He’s he’s not done enough yet to be a top half of the league quarterback or even middle of the pack. That’s fair. But I also have a rule. I don’t like to just be a problems guy. I like to be a solutions guy. So the next question is what is he missing? Right? When you look at the players above him on the list, uh and obviously the top 10 are the guys you’d think. Uh honorable mention CJ Stra, Jordan Love. Also receiving votes, Kyler Murray, Brock Perie, Dak Prescott, Aaron Rogers, Tua Tongo Valo, and Bo Knicks. What does he have to do to leapfrog some of those or all of those? Right. If he wants to make the top 10, he has to be better than all of them. Uh how does he do it? What is he missing? I wrote down three things that Bryce Young didn’t do enough of or three aspects of his game that need to greatly improve. One, consistency. As good as he was at the end of last year, that for me that just pretty much brings him back up to neutral, right? If you’re awful for the first half of the season and pretty good slash above average for the second half of the season, that that doesn’t mean you had a really good season, right? That means that you you you know lost but made it close, right? If if you’re down 21 in the first half and you win the second half by 14, you didn’t win the game, you played better in the second half, but you’re still down a touchdown. That’s kind of where I’m looking at it with Bryce until he has the consistency to over a full season play winning quarterback football. He can’t be included with even guys like uh you know, Baker Mayfield or or even Bo Knicks, right? guys that have made the playoffs and have played well for an entire season. Um, next thing he needs volume. Volume. And And I’m not sure why he hasn’t like been been able to pull this off. Uh, but in his career, he has one 300yard passing game. This past season, he had none. Right. As good as he played, as exciting as everything was, all of that. Look at him. He’s He’s playing better. He’s improved. He is the guy of the future. He topped out at 298 yards and that was in an overtime game. So, and it would be one thing, by the way, if he won a ton, right? Like, like Patrick Mahomes didn’t throw for a bunch of yards last year, but they were winning the games. that like, okay, if you’re never behind and you’re you’re playing that game, the clock management, everything, sure, you might not have the volume, but when you’re losing a ton, when you’re getting a top 10 pick every year, you should have a quarterback that can can go get it. So, uh, the volume not being there is an issue. He needs 300 yard passing game. And then the the last thing are the wow plays. the more and more and this wasn’t always the case. More and more to be one of the elite quarterbacks, you need to bring something. You need to have a superpower, right? You need to do something special. Gone are the days of the statue in the pocket, good decision maker, does you know Chad Pennington, I don’t know why that’s one that pops into my head. Chad Pennington doesn’t exist in modern football, right? where he’s just not really a super strong arm, not really fast, but he’s he’s a good decision maker. You need to be a great decision maker and have something else to be one of the elite guys, right? When you look at the top Pat Mahomes, you you imagine him running full speed to his left, throwing with his with his off arm, crazy ridiculous plays. Josh Allen, right? He’s running somebody over and then hurdling the next guy. Joe Burrow is is the the swaggiest guy on the planet, right? Keeping the play alive, throwing it a million miles to to Jamar Chase and and Lamar Jackson and and Jaden Daniels and on and on. Like the coolest thing Bryce Young did was throw a pretty routine pass and then turn around and put his arms up before he caught it like Steph Curry shooting a three. Great meme, which is swagger. Like, don’t get me wrong, confidence I like it, but it’s really not like a absurdly impressive play within the the like the structure of football. It’s just you made a pretty good play, super swaggy. Um, he needs wow plays. Again, this is if you want to be considered a a top 10 guy, right? You need to There’s There’s kind of two ways that I judge quarterbacks. Uh, and and and I I played college football, played quarterback at the University of Delaware, so I’m not a complete novice, but I’ve been I I dive super aggressively into the NFL draft every year. And as I get better and better and better at honing my process, uh, there’s two things I look at. One is how good they are within the structure of the offense. That is when when there’s a good play call, do you get everything out of it? Right? If if the the the offensive line blocks and the receiver is open, are you darn near 100% of the time getting the most out of that play? I think Bryce does that, right? If the offensive line blocks and the receiver gets open, I have a ton of confidence that play will work and he won’t be the the the mistake, right? Which don’t take it for granted. There’s a lot of quarterback like there’s some really talented guys that mess those up more than you think. The second part, which is equally as important, is what do they do when the play doesn’t work, right? When the the offensive line uh lets one guy through, when the the receiver uh slips or when or when your your two your number two option on a on a read, it doesn’t get open and you got to go, you got to buy time, you got to get to the next, you got to improvise. That’s where Bryce hasn’t been good enough. He’s been he’s made plays. Not like he’s made zero of them, but he hasn’t made enough of them. Uh and and towards the end of the season, he got better. Not going to hear me argue that. Uh obviously against the Falcons, he was very good at darn near everything. Not going to hear me argue with that. But it’s it’s the improv. It’s when things break down, he has to not just be pretty good occasionally. You got you got to put those together more often. It’s it’s part of the job requirement. Now, in 1994, maybe he would have gotten by with just when the play works, making sure it it happens and throwing it away every time the play breaks down. But that’s that’s not how we judge players anymore. No. Yeah. That was ruined by kind of this generation. Sorry. By the way, I think he can I think he’s actually better with his feet than he he even gives himself credit for. Yeah. I want him I want him running not necessarily running like he’s Lamar Jackson going to you know no yeah take hits 15 yards down the field but running out of the pocket buying time keeping his eyes downfield I don’t think he gives himself enough credit for that I think he could do it more once he gets comfortable cuz I feel like he started getting comfortable towards the end you could see it on the field more so hopefully that carries over we’ll see be the first guy this is like I I I promise I’m not always just this Debbie Downer like wet wet blanket uh wouldn’t be the first guy to have like a hot streak at the end of a year. That doesn’t translate. I think I think Panther fans are just a hint out over their skis on like he was good the last seven games which means he’s only going to get better from here. It’s like well I’ve seen guys have good seven game stretches. We also have to remember towards the end of the season the teams that we played as the Panthers we not the greatest. Hey, we we take wins wherever we can get them. I mean, I’ll take a W whenever I can. But also, you got to be realistic. He did down the stretch play well against the Chiefs, play well against the Eagles. I wouldn’t say those were great games the entirety of, but when you show up in the big moments against those teams, I give you credit for that. So, they weren’t all against scrubs either, although some of them were. Uh, the Adam Gold show. I’m Tim Donnelly sitting in for Adam today. When we come back, I’m tired of the zings towards the Carolina Hurricanes. I’m going to defend them against one and and I hope I don’t have to do this too often. That defense pops up next. Panthers training camp is almost here and it’s finally time. Panthers fans go all out to win. The years prior to this, it’s about draft picks. It’s about playing the younger guys, making sure they get their experience, maybe even above winning games. But this year, all of that changes. Dave Canales, Bryce Young, it’s time to win. Victoria is single-handedly trying to raise the energy on a Monday. I’m trying. She’s put it on herself coming out of break to be like, “No, I got I got you.” Every time. Anybody out there with low energy? Yeah, caffeine’s not kicking in yet. Victoria got you. And maybe that’s why I’m I’m I’m kind of in a fighting mood right now. I I I kind of wanna want to uh address some things that I feel like are are disrespect or even misdirected zings. Feeling feisty. Yeah, I am. Okay. Like it. So, so I most things on social media I I let roll off my back, right? Because you’re going to hide behind some avatar, right? Not put your real name on it. You’re liable to say anything because you don’t care about the repercussions. But there are a few that I I I take a little bit more to heart. Um, which, you know, maybe a a direct tweet from the league. I’m like, “All right, let me pay attention to this.” So, the NHL, like the the NHL, the National Hockey League, the actual league office, the social media arm of the league, tweeted out a graphic that listed every team in the NHL’s last 50 goal scorer. Kane’s haven’t had a 50 goal score since coming to Carolina. and the NH like they it wasn’t a post celebrating the 50 goal scorers, the most recent 50 goal scorer for each team. It was very obviously a look at these teams that haven’t had a 50 goal scorer post, right? It was very obviously like I’m not no I’m just posting the 50 goal scorer. No, you weren’t. You were making you were making it very obvious who was not on the list is what you were doing. And the the the the the issue I had with that is that’s not the burn you think it is. What you have to ask yourself is have they aggressively tried to achieve a 50 goal score? Right? Because you could tell me I like, oh, you didn’t play college golf. And I’m like, well, I didn’t I didn’t play high school golf. I wasn’t even trying to play college golf. That’s not an insult to me. That wasn’t my goal. That’s not what I worked towards. like, “Oh, the Canes haven’t had a 50 goal score.” And I’m going like, “Well, yeah. Have they Have they played the style of hockey that would lead to a 50- goal score, right? 50 goal scores don’t happen often, by the way, for anybody. And unless you play the style of hockey where you get up and down the ice, you’re probably not the most sound defensive team. You’re probably not backing the way the Canes are.” And and on top Yeah. And on top of that, you have to have some some like legendary snipers, right? Some some go after it, get the goal guys. The full list of teams that have not had a 50 goal scorer, Devils, Blue Jackets, Kraken, Golden Knights, Mammoth, never have. At least the Canes on the list had uh Blaine Stton in Hartford in 1981. They give him credit for the the franchise. Uh, this is not, and this is what I think they were trying to do because every year the NFL does this. Uh, in the NFL, it’s a zing towards the Bears, so I don’t care. But if I were a Bears fan, I would. Uh, every year. Are you actually Are you a Bears fan? No. Okay. Just Just I Cubs to Bears. Total total. Well, we don’t have a We don’t have a team here, but Yeah. I just didn’t know if they were like your second I know you’re Panthers first. I didn’t know. Some people have secondary squads. Yes. Didn’t know if that was um the Bears have never had a 4,000 yard passer. Never. 4,000 yards, by the way. Not that much. Last year, I think there were five 4,000 yard passers. The year before, there were 10 4,000 yard passers. There throughout history have been a handful of 5,000 yard passers. And and and the Bears have never had a 4,000 yard passer. And every year the graphic goes around in the offseason where it shows the last 4,000 yard passer for each team and there’s graphics and there’s you know Rafosberger and then there’s for all these teams. Uh Newton for the Panthers and and the Bears have like a circle with a line through it and it says NA. Nope. And it’s just a zing towards the Bears. 50 goal scorers is not that because every team would love to have a 4,000 yard passer and and there are certain teams out there that have had a 50 I’m not saying you don’t like it wouldn’t be nice if you had a 50 goal score but if that’s not the way you play that’s not the way you play Nikolai Eers is not going to do it by the way we should we should hope Jarvis or Aaho reach 40 goals in a season before we even start you know aiming our target at a 50 goal score it it’s it’s just not there and I don’t think it’s fair to judge a team or to point the halves and the have nots for something like that that might not even be on their vision board. The Adam Gold show. I’m going to keep this rolling. I have another disrespect that I want to avenge. Oh my goodness. So many so much disrespect. I I maybe I’m a little little uh sensitive right now. People are just throwing enough shade out, I guess. Yeah, maybe I need I need to get better at it. uh NC State quarterback CJ Bailey if he’s somebody that needs like uh you know to be left off a list or needs uh you know the the the article that that bashes him to be motivated right he’s going to print it out he’s going to put it in his locker and every time he you know he goes to the the the wait room he’s going to read it if he needs that I got it for him USA today right this isn’t some you know uh uh college football blog that that you know is written by some person in their uh basement who’s never watched nor played football. This is USA Today. USA Today ranked the 17 ACC quarterbacks. There are 17 teams in the ACC. They ranked the quarterbacks from each of them 1 to 17. CJ Bailey came in at 15th. 15 out of 17. Yikes. It’s like the Panthers in the NFL. Right at the bottom. Ex. Exactly. Hey CJ, I know you had a really good true freshman season being thrust into the the the starting lineup after Grayson McCall got hurt. You were just a couple months out of high school and and you played pretty darn well and closed pretty darn well for your your reward. We’re calling you the you are to ACC quarterbacks, but the Carolina Panthers have been to the NFL the last five years. Congrats. Now, now I do have to wonder, is this me being too close? Right? Cuz I I cover NC State. I cover the teams in the triangle. So, I watch CJ Bailey. Am I missing something? Like, are the other quarterbacks in the NFL all going to be first round draft picks? And it’s or sorry, in the ACC all going to be first round draft picks and it’s actually like, well, it all makes sense. No. I’m going to give you a list of some of the people ranked above him. Ready? Number six on this list, the sixth best quarterback in the ACC is Chandler Morris for UVA. He just transferred to UVA from North Texas. So, he started his career at Oklahoma. Didn’t work out there. Transferred to TCU, didn’t work out there. transferred to North Texas and last year in his fifth year of college football playing at the group of five level, not in a power conference, he had a 140 passer rate. CJ Bailey as a true freshman in a power five conference, power four conference without being the starter in training camp. So thrown into the lineup, he had a 144 passer rating. Uh CJ Bailey is ranked a 15th. Chandler Morris is ranked sixth. I could go on and on. Miller Moss at Louisville, number eight on the list. Last year at USC in his fourth year of college football, 135 passer rating. CJ Bailey as a true freshman, 144. What about this? Number 11 has a slash. Number 11 is uh Deshawn Perie slash Robbie Ashford at Wake because they don’t know who’s gonna start yet and they’re above CJ Bailey. Ridiculous. If it’s Deshawn Perie last year at Charlotte again nonp power five 136 passer rating CJ Bailey in a power conference 144. And I know Pertie brings some things with his legs but Bailey is not exactly a statue either. Ashford had 59 pass attempts in the last two seasons at South Carolina. Here’s here’s my this one might be the best one. Here’s what might be the best one. Number 14 on the list, the quarterback one in front of CJ Bailey. Ricky Collins for Syracuse. How many pass attempts in his career do you think Ricky Collins has? Lower. whatever number you’re thinking lower. Seven Seven pass attempts in two years at LSU. Now, arguably he’s backing up really good quarterbacks and I get that and you know, if you’re at LSU, you’re probably a pretty high high prospect, but it’s not like CJ Bailey was last year do like doing nothing. Experience matters. And oh, by the way, Jeremiah Smith, the uh the superstar at Ohio State, uh everybody’s real excited about him. He’s the next Julio Jones. He’s going to be the number one pick. Not this year because he’s not eligible, but the next draft, right? Uh CJ Bailey was a high school quarterback. Oh, wow. Look at that. So, he’s been throwing to studs for a long time. It’s not like he came out of nowhere. They were playing at the top level of Florida High School and he had maybe the best player in the country out there with him. So, first of all, disrespect, right? My if I’m the the quarterback’s coach, I’m calling CJ Bailey and I’m showing him the list and I’m saying, “Uh, do you want to come in early and work out tomorrow?” Like that’s that’s how it works. But I also I wonder this I wonder if this is kind of what Dave Dorne, the head coach at NC State, is intentionally doing this off season. I’ve talked with Dave on on my show on the 999, the fan in the triangle, the drive. Uh, and I asked him about it about if they’re like intentionally sneaking up on people this year because I mean even in our state, but definitely in the ACC, so many people are clamoring for the spotlight. Bill Bichc was hired by UNC, right? That comes with eyeballs. Uh, even across campus for the NC State football team for the Wolfpack. Uh, you look at Will Wade. Will Wade has yet to find a microphone that he’s not willing to make some guarantee into like that guy is trying to draw attention to his program, build that brand. Meanwhile, Dave Doran has been awfully quiet. Uh they have not made the splashes in the transfer portal like they did last year when they brought in uh Noah Rogers, former five-star receiver. They brought in Zeke Carell, two-year starter at Notre Dame. They brought in Grayson McCall, one of the top quarterbacks. They brought in Hollywood Smothers from Oklahoma. They brought in Justin Jolie, one of the top tight ends. They like last year they won the off season. This year they didn’t even let us, meaning anybody outside. No fans, no media, watch the spring game. I wonder if they’re doing a little bit of like the um uh I think it was Teddy Roosevelt quote, speak softly and carry a big stick. Like they don’t want to be the the the the hype. They want Yeah. Yeah. Call us 15th best quarterback. Yeah. See what happens. We’ll lay in the weeds over here. We want We want secondaries playing us to go, “Oh, we don’t have to get up. We can play in the 15th best quarterback in the country or in the the ACC. We Yeah, we’re they’re just being quiet almost. You know, I don’t know if you’ve ever seen it. There’s There’s a couple viral clips where like a Navy Seal is is somebody’s trying to get into a bar fight with them and they’re just like the calmst people on the planet. like almost a smirk like come on. Which should be scary. You don’t you don’t want to yell. All right, go ahead and yell. Go ahead and yell. Want to think about this for a second? No. And and like obviously the person that’s threatening them doesn’t know they 75 different ways they could kill them with their pinky. Exactly. Like I wonder if state doesn’t know or at least they believe they got something special. They got a particular set of skills and they’re just going to be quiet and let everybody else figure it out the hard way. Yep. because I haven’t heard anything out of that program. Even though I do think they have some talent and and if things go right and experience builds and camaraderie builds, they can uh they can go ahead and and add it in. Uh with that being said, and it’s appropriate that we you were just kind of hinting talking about a little uh recruiting. Uh we bring into the studio our colleague here at Capital Broadcasting Company, Joel Bryant from High School OT. Joel, what’s going on, man? Nothing much. Just got back from Cedar Point, which was great. Uh, it’s beautiful up there. If anyone hasn’t been up there before, it’s just beautiful. It’s like a like a city of coasters in the air. It’s very cool. Very cool. Um, so the reason why I wanted to bring you in here today um is because uh for those of you that don’t know, uh, High School OT, you can catch them online. Go search for it. It’s part of uh kind of our W capital Broadcasting umbrella. Uh, they do as good a job as anybody. uh Joel and and his colleagues covering high school sports and recruiting in the in the state of North Carolina. Um and his cubicle happens to be kind of caddyy corner from mine and and last week he jumped in and and he pointed something out to me. the instate colleges, meaning college football teams, not exactly building the metaphorical fence around the state and as far as recruiting and and you know, I think when we talked last week of the top 20 recruits, two had been committed to instate in-state schools both to to UNC. So, I’ll start with kind of just broad. What is happening with top recruits in the state choosing to go to out of state schools and and kind of what is your take on that that phenomena? So, it’s a lot of things. I mean, some of these kids are just going to want to be away from home regardless. Some of them just want to get out get out of their town and just kind of, you know, have new experiences and whatnot. Uh, some of the kids, you know, they they really want to go for those bigger programs that are going to be on national TV on Saturdays are going to have that big super fan base that’s going to have that extra NIL. Um, and some of them, they feel like, frankly, that the instate schools feel kind of entitled to them. So they don’t feel like they get the same kind of attention recruiting wise that they might get from these out of state schools that are trying really hard to get them out of their get them out into their area. All right. So So I’m right now we’re talking with Joel Bryan High School OT. I’m going to kind of role play as the fans of UNCC, NC State, Duke, Wake Forest that that are hearing what you you just said. Yeah. Uh what do you mean big programs? We’re big programs. the Tarheelss just got Bellichic. They’re going to be on national. They got Monday Night Football to start things off. Like what are players getting from the schools that they’re committing to that they wouldn’t get from from the instate schools? Just that national attention, you know, being on those prime time games is SEC schools. Notre Dame is another school they’re they’re killing the state right now. Um Oregon where we have a fivestar going, that’s a kind of its own kind of brand. Um they’re just bigger brands right now and that’s just always how it’s kind of been. Um, obviously like what North Carolina is in basketball, college basketball, it’s what a lot of these SEC schools are in football. And is this is this new like like if you look in I don’t know if it’s the last couple of years, it might be a phenomenon, but if you look at you know the last 20 maybe pre-NIL were more of the top guys, top recruits in the state staying home. Yeah. So M. Brown during the 2020 and 2021 classes, he got a lot of these fourstar players that were in this state. uh they made a lot of headlines at that time for getting all these guys. Um not all of them panned out. Um as the fans of the show are well aware. Uh but yeah, so this 20 gain two out of the top 20 guys. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. And and the thing that you know is bad about it is this is probably the best class I’ve seen since I’ve been covering this and since 2016. This is the best one. We have 20 kids that are four stars. There’s three in some cases four or five stars. I mean, this is a very, very good class in North Carolina. Are uh actually, let me let me phrase it this way. We’re talking with Joel Bryant, high school OT, joining us here in studio on the Adam Gold Show. Uh, is this a bigger deal for one of the schools in the state? Like, you bring up North Carolina under M. Brown. They did keep a decent amount home. They have the two in the top 20 that are committed right now, committed to uh Bill Bich and UNCC. Is it a bigger deal for them that they’re not getting more of the in-state schools or instate uh uh uh uh support? Or is it state? Should should Duke feel like, “Hey, we’ve been pretty good the last two years.” Like, is it a bigger deal for one of them or is this just a problem that that affects all teams in state the most? Well, I would say that Carolina has an excuse being that Belch just came in in the past year. I mean, they’ve started recruiting these these kids since four years ago. So these relationships are really important to the kids and obviously they just didn’t have the time to make those relationships. Um he did get the the one kid back from from Rollsville Griffin Haynes he did manage to get him back but in general you’re talking about these four fivestar kids. I mean there’s going to be schools that are on them from very early age working really hard those relationships that’s just hard to keep up with. Uh NC State would probably be the one where they would like to maybe have gotten at least one or a couple of these guys. Uh Dave Dorne has been here for this entire cycle. Uh obviously Duke with with May Diaz, they got the one kid last year and Bryce Dav is the defensive end. None of them this year and he’s obviously still new. So it’s going to be a process for him as well. Uh are are the schools in state getting better players from out of state cuz cuz like if I’m guessing that would be one way that you kind of justify it, right? If it’s like well we didn’t focus instate but we got a bunch of four stars from out of state then it’s like oh okay like you’re still getting the talent in. or is this just missing on recruiting as a whole and having to settle for out of state guys or lower ranked in state guys? I think UNCC does have a couple of guys from out of state. I’m not well versed on those guys. I just don’t really pay attention to them, but I’ve heard UNCC has a couple of guys from out of state. Um NC State, they seem to pick like they pick their guys they really like. These kind of like high three star guys they just really like. I think there’s a quarterback in the program now that they were on like very early. So they tend to do that as far as the outstate guys go. But no, I think that they were involved in a lot of these kids and um it just didn’t work out this time. There there is an elephant in the room in recruiting and and it is NIL money, right? Uh in in the absence or yeah, I guess in the absence of NIL money previously, you had to pitch on so many different things, right? And proximity to home and right your grandparents can come watch every home game maybe was one of the most important things you could offer or facilities, right? All of these other things. uh playing time early early playing time. Now that NIL has become so prominent. Do you get the sense that like hey I would I would have liked like if I’m the the recruit I would have liked to have stayed in North Carolina, right? I I wish my high school coach could coach on Friday and be at my Saturday afternoon game, but the money was so big Tennessee called or Notre Dame called and and I I have to financially, you know, entertain that and that’s what it leads to. Is this just a money problem, I guess, is what I’m getting at here. I would suspect it’s a big part of it. Obviously, like none of these kids are going to say how much they’re getting deals wise from these other places. Um, I would say that some of these places like Oregon and Notre Dame, they kind of scream to me like, “Yeah, that’s there’s some fan bases and and popular alumni that would have some money for that.” Um, obviously, it’s just a part of it. I think it’s definitely a part of it. Um, but I think probably the bigger part is just having that kind of like national recognition in terms of these programs just playing on Saturdays, late Saturday nights, you know, playing the college football playoff. That’s probably a bigger deal. So, so here’s here’s the way I I imagine these conversations happening. I think administrators want to, meaning like athletic directors and and those that level of of uh kind of position would love to recruit locally. I believe fans uh the one of and I’ve covered college football in a bunch of different states. They love to say if we just kept the good kids home uh you know we could win a national championship and bringing up all of the players on these other teams that grew up locally. If we just kept these nine guys home we’d have the best offense in the country. Uh and coaches usually respond with we’d love to keep them home. Like this is all kind of the rumors. We’d love to keep them home but we don’t have the resources. We don’t have the NIL money. We don’t have the, you know, we’re we’re fighting a losing battle against XYZ programs. If Carolina State, whoever, if they build up their war chest and they get the revenue share and their endorsement NIL money is good, do you get the sense that more guys would stay home if the money was equal or is it just, you know, until you’re on ABC on on Saturday nights, you know, four times a season, you’re just going to lose those battles? I would say if all things were equal moneywise, it’ probably be that probably helps sway some guys back here. But then again, you when you were talking about that just reminded me of last year stay in the transfer portal, what they do last year. They brought back all these guys that were from here. They all came back. They got, you know, good deals and uh it didn’t really work out for for NC State last year to the fullest extent. Is that the move that actually and and this will be my last like serious question for you. Is the move like let him go hate it somewhere else for a year, right? and and then we’ll get him in the transfer portal for half the price because because that kind I mean it has to be it has to be a part of it now. It has to be part of the calculation now. Like we we’ll get another shot at most of these guys is kind of the the way you think. So I don’t know that that’s actually an interesting way to think about it. They’re they’re going like we’ll get the local guys just not out of high school. Uh last question for you. Um kind of a theme for the show today is is rivalries, right? Yeah. Uh, S and and Alvarez are, I think, being forced into almost being like a legendary rival despite the fact that they’re both great, but they we’re talking it’s tennis now, Wimbledon. Uh, they don’t really have like the storylines, right? There’s no I don’t there’s no reason for it to be a rivalry like I think of rivalries. Uh, can you can you give us if there is one like a legendary individual rivalry in in the state of North Carolina high school? if if you have one. And if not, you can obviously just throw out the teams. But, uh, individual rivalries to me just have a little bit like a little bit more pizzazz when it’s like it’s not I just dislike you for the jersey you’re wearing. It’s like, no, I dislike you for you. And dislike might be a little aggressive. The sad thing is it’s kind of hard to pinpoint that nowadays. All these kids seem to be friends with each other. That’s what I’m getting. Like on on they’re friends with each other on social media. They’re pumping each other up on their social media and everything. You don’t really get that that true hatred. Yeah. that you know uh they might have had before social media. So that that’s a tough one. I will say it’s a cool phenomena when and this happened in my college career where guys leave the same state and they played for like bitter rival teams but then once they get to college in the locker room suddenly they’re they’re like repping for each other like you know because it’s all the area. So maybe high school is a bad spa space to start that. But I I do want may maybe I’m again maybe I’m old school. I want to bring like hate back to rivalries. Well it’s really in high school football now it’s really just the coaches that hate each other. That’s fair. So that’s fair. That works. Like cuz if you ride for your coach and your coach got a personal beef, it’s, you know, the enemy of of my my friend is my enemy. Uh, appreciate it, Joel. Yeah. Thank you. Uh, tell people where they can find more about about the high school coverage, social media, and everything else. So, high school.com on on on the website, obviously. Uh, and then high school on Instagram, Twitter, and uh, pretty much everywhere, Facebook as well. There you go. That’s Joel Bryant High School OT. Uh, we’ll take a quick break. When we come back, seventh inning stretch and placing our bets back after this. Talking sports so you don’t have to pretend to no stop. The Adam Gold show on the North Carolina Sports Network. This is Adam Gold. I did love that Rod video with him though when he was trying to communicate. You speak hockey and he was like, “It’s okay. You don’t need to know this. You know hockey.” And I was like, “Oh, heartstrings. That’s fantastic.” Yeah. No, it’s uh it was it was awesome. The Adam Gold Show, the Adam Gold Show. I’m Tim Donnelly sitting in for Adam today. Adam, just continuing the weekend. Really, right? It’s a Monday. Just why not? Madam Adam’s living life. Uh but uh Victoria and I are here and we’re we’re up in the energy. Oh yeah. At least that’s what the uh the music is supposed to do. And uh and also right when you’re you’re when that that energy is coursing through your veins, you need to make sure you stop and stretch. So let’s go ahead and hit a seventh inning stretch. Okay. Well, speaking of Mondays, this isn’t uh like great I always like to bring great news, but this feels appropriate for a Monday. So, there’s a new study about how researchers were testing people to uh kind of see if you still have the case of the Mondays even when you’re retired. Interesting. Now, I hope I make it one day, but uh apparently whether you are retired or not, you still get stressed out for Mondays. What? Because they tested people to see how much cortisol was still being produced in their hair over time. It was very interesting. I don’t know why they chose that, but they would test cortisol levels in individuals through their hair if they’re still producing it, which of course for those who may not know that that is a stress hormone that causes things like heart disease, weight gain, you know, all all that good stuff. So, they uh tested people and apparently even when you’re retired, you are still producing that same stress hormone on Monday. I wonder I I wonder why. I know. Well, their their only conclusion is they think that your body is just so used to feeling a type of way about Mondays and like the week work week type thing that you you just can’t even shake it. It’s just muscle memory at that point to hate Mondays. But like here here’s my thing and this is like I I don’t I haven’t spent a lot of time around around retired people. My grandfather used to say this like I don’t he he’d say he doesn’t know the day. Yeah. Like he he was every day is a Saturday for retired people. Yeah. Why am you say every day is a holiday like why why am I checking out a calendar right unless you you have an event or something like you’re you’re going somewhere there’s a game you want to watch like I I’m until I don’t know maybe I’ll set alarms or something like until I need to know the day I don’t need to like if it’s Monday Tuesday Wednesday what’s the difference to me exactly I don’t know but just prepare yourself I guess maybe meditate do do some woosawing and and stretching so I don’t know I don’t know I think you could shake the Mondays. Maybe just turn it around now. Do something fun on Mondays and change it up. Now, one thing you don’t have to change up or you should change up if you’ve been doing this. Have you heard the myth of don’t eat 30 minutes before you swim because it will cause It’s a myth. I’ve heard the the rule. I didn’t know it was a myth. Yes. Oh, no. It’s a total myth, which I So, I lifeguarded for like a bajillion years. That was one of my many jobs to pay for college. It’s a technical term. Uh, and I’ve always thought I don’t really think it’s a cramping issue. More so like if you eat too much and then you swim it might give you an upset stomach. But the whole like myth of it causing cramps totally not a thing because a physician who uh also is a competitive swimmer like I was said that it’s a total hypocrisy of a claim for anyone to have because they actually feel better if you eat a couple like pieces of toast before you swim competitively versus not. You’re lagging. You don’t have the energy. So I think the moral of the story is just don’t stuff your face. No. No, this is I I have input on this. Do you? I do. Um this is and I’m I’m at risk like if if you have a elementary schoolaged kid in the car right now, uh cover their ears, okay? We’re going to have we’re going to have a parents only conversation. Uh it’s a genius rule. It’s a genius myth if it’s a myth because uh like when we like say we’re we’re at the the the pool or the beach, right? And we all stop for lunch. Okay. And we all grab our sandwiches. And kids are excited to get back in the water. But as an adult, do not want to do that. Well, I just I want to eat my lunch. Sure. So if I’m eating my lunch, they scarf down their sandwich and they go running right back into the water. Now I have to put down my lunch. I have to go stand by the edge. I have to watch them because kids are in the water and they’re not maybe the best swimmers and I have to be there. So I don’t get to enjoy my lunch at all. However, if you put some arbitrary rule on like when you’re done eating, you have to wait a half hour. Mhm. Then even if you eat your sandwich in 4.2 seconds, I get 30 minutes to eat my lunch. So, it’s it’s just a rule about making sure everybody slows down. It’s a win-win for for 30 minutes and and then I get to, you know, enjoy my lunch as much as they enjoyed theirs. Well, there you go. That’s you should just stick with that then if that works for you. I’m definitely telling my four-year-old. Yes. 30 minutes. Sorry. You don’t want It’s not me. It’s your It’s you. You’ll cramp. It’s not me. I I have to I have to sit here and make myself another hot dog with ketchup. Exactly. To all the ketchup. I have to Exactly. Yeah. So, I don’t know. The the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Committee, very official, I guess, came out with this in 2011. So, stop blowing up my spot, American, whatever the the council that was. Quit being so official with your studies and things. Yeah. No, I will say though, as a just lifeguarding, I’ve seen plenty of people who maybe didn’t wait long. I mean, I think what you eat is also important. Let me throw that out there, too. So, what you eat is definitely important. But, you know what else is important? What is making really, really good bets. Let’s do it. Place your bets. Place your bets. Do you? I bet you slice into the woods a 100 bucks. Gambling is illegal at Bushwood, sir, and I never slice. Okay, you can owe me. I owe you money. Would you like to lead off, Victoria? Sure. Uh, so let’s see. Sometimes we’ll retrace our steps. So, last week I was I didn’t put any money on it, but I should have cuz looking back at it, oh, I just felt so good about it. But Dererick Lewis with a huge knockout in the main event. I cannot believe that he was an underdog in that one. Oh, but it was great. It was fantastic. And then my cubbies won. So, that was that was one of the vets, too. But tonight, we have home run derby time. And I will be watching it just cuz it’s fun and why not? Uh, and you know, I’m going to go with Cal Raleigh to be the winner. And I mean, he’s so chalky. It is super chalky, but you have no idea who’s going to win this. And I have to go with him. His name has Raleigh in it, so why not go with it? He’s still plus 300, so yeah, we’ll do it. Why not? I’m going the longest shot. Junior Kamano to win the home run derby. Uh I I’ve I watched him play a few times with the the Durham Bullshu and uh and he’s the longest shot in the field. Plus 1,200 earlier. Wa plus, 1200. And I think the home run derby is mostly just about stamina and endurance. And 22 year olds don’t get tired. He’s a kid. Yeah. Fresh legs for days. Common error to win it. Nice. Uh I will do Let’s see. Someone to make it to the semifinals. How about we go with Brave Matt Olsen. He’s plus 110. Hometown guy. I know. Uh I’m going Kipple in NBA summer league tonight. 20 or more points versus the Mavericks. Uh he struggled shooting in his first game. I think the bounce back will happen just like it did with Cooper Flag. Struggle in your first game, second game, score a bunch. And Cooper Flag isn’t playing for Dallas, so they’re going to mail it in on defense. And Khan’s going to score a whole bunch. Uh turn 10 bucks into 50 bucks if you bet it. It’s plus 400. Oo, nice. Uh I like those. And let’s see. Uh you know what? We’ll go with the game for tomorrow. The American League versus the National League. Oh man, I would love for the National League to win this one, but the American one wins most of them. So, give me them to win and I will take the over seven. That’s plus 200. I I don’t pretend to know much about the WNBA. I know like four things about the WNBA. Yeah. No, Caitlyn Clark’s in it. One of them is Angel Reese rebounds a lot. She does. And sometimes it’s her own shot that she misses and she gets like six rebounds. Uh she’s averaging 13.8 rebounds per game. Uh, I’m going Angel Reese, 14 or more rebounds verse Minnesota. Uh, tonight it’s plus 110. Again, if all you know is she rebounds, then she’s got a rebound, right? Just do a lot of it this time. That’s I mean, it’s basically what she averages. Yeah, they played Minnesota a couple days ago, she didn’t get there, so this time she will. $10 into 21, it’s plus 110. Uh, those are my three bets. Uh, I wouldn’t tail them if I were you. Just want that to be known. Uh, you know, it happens. At least you’re being honest. Yeah. I mean, I’ll put my own money on it, but I I don’t want to be responsible for yours. Yeah. The wall of sound is a function of this studio. There’s no doubt about it. What sound is all over the wall of sound for today, Victoria? Okay, so today is heavy football, specifically NFL. Won’t hear me complain, right? No. And I think you’ll really like this, too, because a few of them are all about the QB position. So, starting up, we’ve got one from Damen Woody from ESPN, and he talks about Joe Burrow and how he plays his game. So, we’ll see if uh what you think about Burrow in his position. I think Joe Burrow plays the quarterback position as pure as any quarterback in the National Football League. That’s it. Like, just playing the position. I’m not talking about above the X’s and O’s and the spectacular things that we see from Momes and Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. I’m talking about strictly just playing the position from the neck up. I think Joe Burrows is the is the best. I do. I think he’s more than Mahomes. Yes. From the neck up as far as how you’re supposed to play the quarterback position, I would have Joe Burrow but Joe Burrow number one. All right. I I I’m gonna I’m gonna I’m gonna be vulnerable with everybody right now. Yeah. Okay. I played played quarterback in college at the University of Delaware. Uh I quarterback nerd out. I have group chats devoted pretty much exclusively to quarterback play. I have no idea what he just said. Pure with the decision neck up. What is that like? Oh, Mahomes should have should have done what? Mahomes makes the right decision. If you think it’s only the right decision because he has an absurd arm, it’s like, well, do you want him to make an a decision that somebody who’s less talented would have made just because that’s the decision you wanted him to make? Or is it like, no, I have this super talent. I know I do, so I’m going to make those. It’s it’s it’s very frustrating to me when people start saying things like playing the right way, playing pure, uh, quarterbacky has been a phrase used by some. It’s very technical because it’s it’s nonsense. There there’s the best part about sports is there’s a scoreboard, right? We know like the way the the right way to play is the one that wins you games, right? If if you’re playing pure quarterback, whatever the heck that means, and you miss the playoffs, like Joe Burrow did last year, that’s not the right way to play. The right way to play is the one that wins. is the right way to play is the one that uh you know has the best statistics for your position. The right way to play is is not always the the way you think or or it’s not always the way that the previous goat played. Uh like what does pure mean? Yeah. Like oh does does Lamar Jackson uh fertilize his game with with pesticides? Like it’s not farmtotable organic. Like what the heck does pure mean? Uh that’s very frustrating to me because we we work so hard to speak uh like highly intelligent about most sports. Then we get to quarterback which is the most high level of of of positions in sports and we resort to just like I like that one is I he wasn’t pure. He wasn’t pure from the neck up. It’s like Mahomes is special. Mahomes is different. Mahomes is the best quarterback in the world right now. Do you want him to make decisions that other quarterbacks that aren’t special make just because that’s the pure way? Or do you want him to know I’m special? I could take this completion real quick, but I can buy time. I can scramble to my left. I can throw it across my body and have a 40 yard completion rather than a seven yard completion. Is that less pure? Cuz I don’t care if it’s pure or not. I’m taking 40 over seven every single time. So yeah, give me give me Momes. And I don’t even want to have to explain why Pure is a ridiculous description. Well, Les Pure got him to the Super Bowl and won him multiple times. Got him to the Super Bowl a bunch of times. Got him to the AFC Championship. Every year he’s been the starter, right? So give me that unpure. I want that. I want that I want that tainted. Maybe ugly works. Yeah. So yeah, exactly. Well, this next one staying along the QB lines, but a guy who’s not quite to uh Patrick Mahomes level, there’s a lot of pressure on some quarterbacks like Caleb Williams. So, Courtney Cronin from ESPN thinks that there’s something on the line for Caleb. It can’t look anything like it did last year because if it does, you’re looking at probably drafting a quarterback, which is a weird place to be in when you just spent the number one overall pick. But, this franchise has never drafted and developed a franchise quarterback. They’re trying to get it right. they feel that they have the pieces in place to do that. It would be a catastrophic failure if by the end of this year they didn’t feel strongly about Caleb Williams given everything they’ve done this off seasonason with the people they’ve brought in to make sure that he can succeed. Now I I respect what was it Damen Woody the first time? I respect Woody. Uh I respect Courtney Cronin. You you found some some doozies here. Oh, thank you. Uh Caleb Williams is not going to be replaced before next season. It’s not going to happen. And do you know why I know that? Well, they have a new head coach, Ben Johnson. Because Bryce Young wasn’t replaced before season 3. Yeah, true. Number one overall picks. Uh Bryce Young was significantly worse in his first year. They both switched coaches going into their second year. Bryce Young was benched in the middle of his second year and then played moderately better uh in the the the second half of the season. and he’s going into year three entrenched as the starter. Caleb Williams was, and I’m I’m not saying this to be mean to Bryce. I’m not He was significantly better than Bryce Young as a rookie. Like their rookie years were not comparative. He gets a new coach. There’s going to be a agreed upon growing pain timeline with a new coach. Uh you don’t really make your decisions on your your quarterbacks till after year three. That’s when you have to decide to pick up a fifth year option. That’s where you have to decide to you can if you want to sign him to the big money extension. That’s where all those decisions start happening. Uh you know I I have a saying uh first round picks have nine lives. First overall picks might have 27 lives. Like like they get to be bad for a while and everybody just goes like hold on keep trying. They just gave Ryan Poles a 5-year contract extension according to that’s their GM according to Adam Shfter largely off of bringing in Caleb Williams. So, yeah, that that guy’s going going nowhere. He’s not a I can think of 10 or 15 quarterbacks under more pressure, including Bryce Young, than than Caleb Williams. Uh whole bunch of them. Anthony Richardson, like just it’s um Caleb Williams is under pressure. Every co every quarterback is, but not the most. Yeah. Well, another quarterback that might be under pressure this year. And also since we’ve talked about disrespect early in the show, Michelle Smallman from Unsportsmanlike, who does the morning show on ESPN, she feels like Lamar Jackson was recently disrespected. Lamar comes out of college winning the Heisman and there’s people saying he shouldn’t even be a quarterback. When Lamar Jackson was at an impass with his contract discussions with the Baltimore Ravens, teams weren’t beating down the door to try to get at him. Well, we know why now. But still, I’m I’m saying then he goes out, he wins two MVPs. He could have arguably won one this year, coming off what many people thought was his best year, even though Josh Allen got it. And he’s below Josh Allen and Joe Burrow on this list. Make your case for Jaylen Herz being disrespected. I think if we’re talking in totality, no quarterback has been more disrespected than Lamar Jackson. No quarterback has been more disrespected than Lamar Jackson. I’m actually I’m not going to disagree with this one, but I’m going to explain why you shouldn’t be surprised. Uh we judge as a football fandom quarterbacks probably too much by their success in the postseason. All Lamar needs to do is make it 2-1 Super Bowl. He needs to beat a Josh Allen, a Joe Burrow, a Patrick Mahomes on his way through the ACC to the Super Bowl. And all of this disrespect will be forgiven. Uh I the MVPs and I believe he should have been the MVP this past year. Uh the MVPs are justifying how talented he is. Uh he was a much better passer this past year than he’s than he’s been in in even years before that. Uh, but like you you you got to know how you you take the job or you become a quarterback knowing that you get way too much credit for wins and losses and you get way too much credit for playoff wins and losses, but also you get way too much blame on that that same category. So until he has a little bit more postseason success, there’s going to be a bit of a glass ceiling that he can’t break through because, you know, other guys have had kind of more high-profile playoff, even individual success, right? Josh Allen hasn’t made it to a Super Bowl, but he’s had games that are statistically impressive in in the playoffs. Lamar still really hasn’t had that yet. So, little bit of playoff success and all that’ll be forgiven. Um, but al like, you know, fourth best in the NFL. Mhm. If you’re if if you have people jumping to your defense for, oh, you’re so disrespected being the fourth best quarterback in the NFL, right? That in and of itself kind of shows you how good Lamar Jackson is. It’s like uh it’s the Rod Brendmore thing for Carolina Hurricanes fans where he’s like we lost in the Eastern Conference Finals and everybody is furious. Exactly. That’s pretty good, right? That like hard to do. We’re we’re pretty we must be really good if that’s the reaction to losing in the Eastern Conference Finals. Lamar Jackson must be really good if people are jumping to his defense because he was picked fourth best in the NFL. Like that’s that right there shows like there he’s he’s getting some love. Yeah. And by the way, I I think maybe Burrow just off of doesn’t really have the MVPs and everything. Uh but Pat Mahomes is above him. If you want to put Allen above him, I’m not going to argue. I’d say Lamar is pretty confidently a top three. He finished fourth. Yeah. Whoa. Yeah. And I’m as big of a Lamar defender as you can go back years uh when I was on the radio early in his career and I was in dragout battles defending Lamar. Now I’m kind of like, no, we’re good. Right. There were times when we really needed to defend Lamar. Now we’re kind of good. Yeah, we’re in the ballpark. We’re we’re we’re even on the cards. There you go. Com combat sports. How you like it? I know. I love it. I always love it. We do have one more if you want to do it. Let’s do it quickly. Yeah. Okay. So, uh this one I’m probably going to butcher his name. So, uh this one is about also pressure on the field, but on the other side of the field, this is from Andrew Andrew Salisionas uh from ESPN. And uh this is about a head coach. When the Eagles were going to NFC Championship games left and right with Andy Reid, but they couldn’t win the big one. They couldn’t win some of those NFC Championship games, and then when they finally break through, they can’t win the Super Bowl. There were a lot of Eagles fans that were ready to move on from Andy Reid. So, I get what Pittsburgh Steelers fans are going through, but the only thing that I can say is you don’t know what the other side could hold. Like, it was bad. Chip Kelly was not good with the Philadelphia Eagles. So just because you move on from the guy that you want to move on from doesn’t necessarily mean that the next option is much better. Mike Tomlin here’s By the way, I love Mike Tomlin. Yes, same. I I think he is an unbelievable coach. I think he gets the most out of his roster. I think if he were to be fired or moved on from by the Steelers, there would be other coaches willing to fire or other teams willing to fire their coach just for the chance to interview Mike Tomlin and hopefully convince like he’s that good. Yes. Here’s my my issue. I think there need like he needs not a friend. He needs an enemy to be the Pittsburgh Steelers GM. He needs someone that is not afraid to upset him as their GM because there are different roles within the structure of a of a NFL team. Uh the coach should try to win every game as aggressively as they possibly can. Win win. Coaches worry about winning and keeping everybody fighting. GMs at times have to recognize, oh, we have to stink this here. Right now, the Steelers are just caught on the the treadmill of mediocrity. Mike Tomlin is too good of a coach to ever have a high draft pick and the team is not good enough to come anywhere near competing for a Super Bowl and they’re just going to stay there. They need a year where they stink. Mhm. where the like the veterans get thanked and moved on from and they get a high draft pick and they they find their quarterback rather than these stop gaps of Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers and Kenny Picket for a year like trying to trying to get it right in the late first band-aids. You you need a GM to say like Mike, I know you get the most out of your roster. We’re not trading for DK Metaf. We’re not signing Aaron Rogers. We’re starting Mason Rudolph and he’s throwing to to to Calvin Austin and and we’re not trading for John Smith and and we’re you’re you’re just gonna have to do your best and you’re going to do an unbelievable coaching job and you’re going to win three games. Mhm. And then next year we’re going to reset this whole thing and we’re going to go try to win a win a Super Bowl and we’re going to we’ll pay you double for this year because I know it’s going to anger you that much. And then if Mike Tomlin doesn’t want to do it and he’s going to move on, you got to be willing to call his bluff and say, “Well, this is what we’re doing.” Because they’re they’re on that treadmill of mediocrity. And until it’s almost like in Moneyball, I don’t know if people remember the movie Moneyball when the the manager played by the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman keeps starting. I forget who it is. We’ll call him Joe. Joe at at first base and Billy Bean, who’s the GM, wants him to play Hatterburgg, played by Chris Pratt. And he’s like, “No, I’m playing Joe. No, I’m get to control the lineup. I’m playing Joe. I’m playing Joe. I’m playing Joe. So then Billy Bean, played by Brad Pitt, trades Joe away and is like, “Well, now you’re playing Hatterburg.” Like, you need somebody to like keep Mike Tomlin away from himself. Like, you’re too good if we make these stop gap moves. You’re going to win nine or 10 games and we’re not going to win a Super Bowl and it’s going to be that way forever unless you let me make us stink for a year. And it’s going to it’s going to stink, don’t get me wrong. And they had the perfect opportunity. Now, we’re going long, but this is one of my favorite theories. Um, they had the perfect opportunity. What they should have done is the last year of Ben Rothllessberger, he should have announced his retirement ahead of time. Like, after this year, I’m retiring and they should have taken away every good player other than Ben Rothosberger. Cuz here’s the trick. After a loss, all you like a home loss when the fans should be booing, you got beat by a hundred by a rival. You just make sure Ben Rothllessberger is the last guy walking off the field waving and everybody’s going to cheer, right? You turn the the retirement tour into a distraction for the tank. Yep. And then you draft his replacement right there. Yeah. You draft his replacement right there. I like it. And and it uh it works out well. Yeah, it should have. That’s all you got to do. But instead, here we are. Here we are. And they’re they’re going to win nine games this year with Aaron Rodgers. With Aaron Rogers. And by the way, Aaron Rogers wasn’t I know people like to make fun of him. He wasn’t terrible last year. No. No. And he’ll be not terrible this year. And they’ll win eight or nine games. Might make the playoffs. They lose immediately. If they don’t make the playoffs, they’ll they’ll, you know, be drafting 16th. Yep. And Rogers will will retire. And And Rogers will retire. Do it all over again. Yeah. And they’ll go get Kurt Cousins next year. It’s It’s unbelievable. Uh the Adam Gold show will continue up next uh as we look towards MLB All-Star week, I guess we can call it. Home run derby tonight, All-Star game a little bit later on and more. Stick around. By the way, uh this this is one of my little pet theories here. Okay. Uh earlier today we talked about the case of the Mondays and and uh what was it in in was it one hitters? Is that what it is? Oh, uh seventh one. Oh, seventh inning stretch. You’re right. Um, Victoria brought up that even in retirement, yeah, Mondays still stress you out like chemically that there like a science a scientific study was done and even if you’re you’re not working, right? Even if Mondays isn’t the start of the work week or you know it’s there’s there’s no TPS reports due or anything like that, you inherently are more stressed on Mondays than other days of the week almost through muscle memory. Yep. Uh I used to I used to say this that all the time um because for whatever it is on radio, we’re very tempted. Maybe it’s because we have to intro coming out of breaks. Uh we’re very tempted to go like it’s a Monday. Yeah. Like, oh, we’re fighting through a case of the Mondays. I don’t know. I don’t know what it is. Right. It’s not like we’re, you know, roofers in July. And it’s like, you know, we got to go crush our bodies as we we lay I don’t know, railroad track down or something. Um, if you hate Mondays and you’re just in a bad mood on Mondays, like if that’s just you, one of your things is, “Oh, it’s Monday.” And you let it kind of ruin you. Uh, let’s say you live to be 80 years old. Okay. I don’t I don’t know what the average or 80 cuz it’s easier to do math. Mhm. Uh, rather than like 75 or whatever the the average lifespan is. That’s like 11 and a half years. You’re in a bad mood just because it’s it’s Monday. It’s a day. Yeah. Just so if if you are cool with that. Yeah. You’re just like, “No, I’m miserable for 11 plus years.” Yeah. I’m just going to live in it. Just cuz it’s the day you have to go do the thing that like you’ve agreed to do to make money and support yourself. I don’t know. I I just think you can try you can try to mental your way out of that one a little bit. Things to do to change it. You can try to think think a little more positively or something. I don’t know. Get a a self-motivation podcast you like listening to or something. Or a dog. Dogs help. Dogs help. We both have them. Yeah. Yeah. What’s the uh It might be like a country song, but it’s definitely a saying. Like it’s definitely a bumper sticker like be the person your dog thinks you are. Yes. Oh, yeah. I’m sure there’s like a sign. Focus that on Monday. Yeah. Uh live, laugh, love. Yeah. Right there. Your animal as well as like, you know, a couple jokes back there on the on the I know. Exactly. I like I by the way I have no bumper stickers on my car, but I don’t hate to ask someone to read at the light. So if you’ve got funny bumper stickers and motivational bumper stickers, just know if I’m behind you, I’m reading them all. And just remember if you have one that says like honk if dot dot dot, like if people honk at you, it’s it might be because of your bumper sticker. Uh the middle school that my brother went to, this is that detail is completely irrelevant. Uh they used to give out like the honor student. My my son or daughter is an honor student at Blank Blank Middle School. Uh, and one of my buddy’s dads had one that said, uh, “My son will beat up your honor student at Blank Blank Middle School.” And I I for as like a I don’t know, I was probably 10. Thought it was the funniest thing in the world. Yeah. Thought it was gold. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Looking back, maybe not the most creative. Uh, the Adam Gold show continues here. I’m Tim Donnelly, by the way, sitting in for for Adam Gold. Um I I I I think we need to wrap up tie up a loose end or two here on on the show. Uh as we we are in the third hour and here’s the loose end. Uh we’ve talked a few times about Bryce Young and this list that came out on ESPN. Uh ESPN pulled anonymously uh NFL executives, front office executives, coaches, scouts, and and they put together a top 10 list. So they they had you vote on the top 10. Then they took those votes, compiled them, turned it into a top 10 list. Uh they had honorable mentions, they had uh also receiving votes. Bryce Young is in none of those categories. They had 10 in the top 10, two in honorable mentions, six more in also receiving votes. 18 quarterbacks received some kind of vote in this this anonymous poll. And uh Bryce Young was none of them. Now, we’ve we’ve talked about it. Is it right? Is it wrong? We’ve talked about it. what does he need to do to like what does what is lacking from his resume that made it so he’s not in the top 18, not in the top half of the league? Uh but that’s that’s kind of wishy-washy to me, right? That’s kind of uh you know sitting in in philosophy 101 as a freshman just going like why are we here? Like it’s it seems deep but it’s not. We need to put some cold hard facts on it. So the question here is quite simple. Statistically, right, put a number on it statistically, what does Bryce Young need to do for it to be a successful season? Statist like I’m not saying, uh, oh, he needs to play better. We’re just looking for improvement day by day. No coach speak here. Put numbers on it. And I have the numbers. I have uh by the way I’m I’m I’m eliminating two potential stats for your answers, okay? So don’t try to outsmart me. Uh don’t be the will. The most important stat is wins. So if he wins nine games, no, we’re talking individuals. Okay. Also starts doesn’t count. Health availability is the most important ability. If he starts 17 games, that’s the most important. No. Yeah. No, that’s not allowed. Don’t be the person that when you’re sitting in a circle going around with like, “If I win the lottery, what would you do?” And they say like, “I would give to charity and try to solve cancer.” And it’s like, “All right. Well, now nobody else can say anything else for the rest of this time.” Because after you say that, I look like a jerk. Exactly. For saying uh a private island and a yacht. Like, no. So, so don’t say wins because as soon as you say wins, then I can’t say like this many passing yards because Yeah. You can’t say the truth. Exactly. Because we all have to pretend like uh you know if Bryce is terrible but they win nine games, we’ll all be happy. Like no no individual statistics for Bryce statistically. What does a successful season look like for the young quarterback? I’m putting numbers on it. Now, I will say this is like what a good season is. You if you if you get close, it’s I mean, it’s not a successful season, but it’s, you know, then you start getting into the eye test about, you know, how how val are you picking up the fifth year option and everything. Um, I’m putting 3,500 passing yards on, 3,500 or more passing yards. I’m putting 22 or more passing touchdowns. And I’m putting eight or less interceptions. Now, that’s not super high volume, okay? Uh but also, I don’t think the Panthers necessarily want super high volume for him. I think in Dave Canales’s utopian perfect fantasy offense, they run the ball a lot. And Chuba Hubard is the one that’s the engine and that offensive line is the engine of the offense. And Bryce Young, you know, when you fall behind, has to throw into it. Third downs, two-minute drills, you got to keep teams honest. Uh, but I’m putting 30 like a super efficient 3,500 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns, eight or less interceptions. A season ago, he was uh 2400, 15 and N, but he was benched there for for a chunk. Uh, so I want more efficiency. I don’t really need a ton more volume per game. Like if it’s, you know, 30 40 passing yards per game more, I’m good with it. Uh, and the this was not just random, right? I didn’t just look at it and go, “Well, this is what I want.” Uh, that would put him roughly in the top half of the league as a passer. Roughly, right? Because if we were doing the philosophical thing, if we were doing like like more intangible, I’m going to be vague so I can’t be wrong. I would say a successful season for him looks like being a top half quarterback, right? He’s not in the top 18 now. if he gets in the top 16 uh this season, I that’s what is a successful season to me if we’re talking like fairy dust, right? If we’re just discussing theories. Uh so what I did was I kind of reverse engineered that and I went, “All right, for him to be a top half of the league passer, what does what do the stats look like?” And I came up with 3500 or more passing yards, 22 or more passing touchdowns, and eight or less interceptions. I would add uh Teroa McMillan should make his job easier. I I I think McMillan is a pretty good player. I think he’s a bit boom bust, but I think the boom is really exciting. Uh so, you know, you take his his stats last year, you add in a top level addition at wide receiver, you build in hopefully that he is not benched at any point in time, so the volume will be higher. and and and you add just a hint more uh efficiency, a hint better decision- making. Uh you take out those two catastrophic games where, you know, he forgot how to play quarterback at the beginning of the year. Uh you take away those interceptions, he’s a much more efficient player. That’s what I’ve come up with. And the reason why I think it’s important to put numbers on it is it does and maybe it’s just, you know, in this business where we talk into microphones and it’s all preserved in podcasts and we can go back and find it and bookmark it, but it it does kind of prevent me from moving the goalposts on Bryce, right? But if I put these numbers out there and then through the first half of the year he’s on pace for like 4600 yards, 30 touchdowns, he’s playing great and he comes back down to earth and finishes passing all of these numbers, but I I have I’m tempted to bash him for it because he he fell off like an MVP pace at the beginning of the year. It’s good to have this kind of in in written in ink, right? Recorded. So now I I can’t, you know, have him throw for 3,700 yards, 23 touchdowns, seven interceptions, and and really rant and rave about how he wasn’t good enough because I I’ve already set what what what is good enough. It’s basically the same logic behind when somebody goes uh like for the Canes, I’ll use the Canes as an example. A lot of cross crossport analogies here. Uh but you know, people were complaining about the Eastern Conference finals. Then there was this other group that jumped in and said, “At the beginning of this year, if I let you sign up for an Eastern Conference Finals appearance, you would have jumped at it. You would have signed up real quickly uh for an Eastern Conference Finals appearance.” Uh which is true, right? I I I think, you know, thinking of things that way is a way to keep you in check. So, right now, I am signing up for it. If you told me we was going to have 3500 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, eight or less interceptions, I’m signing up for it. If he does that and I complain, I fully give all of you the authority to uh, you know, put me in my place, call up angrily. Now, if he has less than this and I’m a little disappointed and I’m being a little critical and I’m saying what should and could have happened and you call up angry, just know I’m firing back just as aggressive, right? We we got to keep each other accountable here. But that’s what I have for a a statistical look at what a successful season for Bryce Young would be this year. Uh, the Adam Gold Show will continue looking towards a controversial Major League Baseball All-Star edition. Is it right? Is it wrong? We’ll tell you next. From the heels, touchdown, Carolina to the Canes. He scores. He covers it all. The Adam Gold Show on the North Carolina Sports Network. Adam Gold. One out of gold. Cuz if interrupting Y is part of the talent, then she wins. Giving a RBF face. Yeah. Oh wow. I mean everybody saw it. I didn’t say it. I that picture when they were asking Bill and she interrupts him and they look at her. That’s evil. Like I was waiting for the lights to come out of her pupils. Like you’re not you’re not wrong. The Adam Gold Show. The Adam Gold Show continues. Once again, I’m Tim Donnelly substituting for uh for Adam Gold today. Wheel in the TV on the cart. There you go. You know what? Just open your books. I’m going to turn the lights off. Yeah. Here’s a Will Ferrell movie. Let’s relax. Yeah. Um, speaking actually, speaking of uh I was going we will talk about uh some All-Star game stuff, some some other things that that have been going on. Uh, but there’s some breaking news here and and it’s indirectly related to the Carolina Panthers. Uh Teddy Bridgewwater quarterback that that spent a year and change getting paid by the Carolina Panthers. Actually, I think that off the the the year that Teddy Bridgewwater was the quarterback for the Panthers, I think we probably took it for granted a bit. That offense wasn’t horrendous. It wasn’t Cam Newton offense, right? But it like looking at what we’ve dealt with since then, it’s like, you know, maybe we should appreciated Teddy a little bit. See, that’s we were coming off of like the Cam Newton days and stuff. So, he was he was better than maybe better than we thought. Um, but the the the part of the story that is interesting here is uh Teddy made a good amount of money from the Carolina Panthers. Uh, I looked it up and this is not pocket watching. This applies to the story I’m about to tell you. Uh, Teddy in his career has made uh about $65 million. of that, uh, about 30 of it, a little more than 30 of it, 31 million of it came from the Carolina Panthers. So, they paid a a good a good chunk of of his career. Now, because of that, he can do things financially that the rest of us wouldn’t be able to do. Uh, that’s just how it works, right? you got $60 million. You live in a different decision-making world than than those of us that don’t have $60 million or, you know, you take away taxes and agent fees, $40 million, whatever you want to call it. Um, he has been suspended from Miami Northwestern, which is the high school he attended, and the high school that, uh, more recently he has coached, okay? And he coached them to a state championship. Uh, he’s been very involved in their their their school. Um, this is the ridiculousness, okay? He has been suspended for providing extra benefits to the players at the school. He was for this past year coming out of his own pocket for estimated $700 per week for Uber rides for players to get to and from practice that didn’t have transportation. uh $1,300 weekly for recovery services. He was paying for like recovery trucks to to show up at at at practice. Uh 200 or sorry, $2,200 for pregame meals, $14,000 for training camp uh finances, 900, sorry, $9,500 for custom uh gear and outfits for the players. This was all coming out of his own pocket. Okay. So, he was like, it is estimated, this is kind of crazy, uh, that he has used over $200,000 of his own money to fund team expenses for the players. Wow, look at him go. Earlier this month, he put a Facebook post out basically saying, “Hey, we we have these these expenses that help the players uh with their their high school experience. if fans wanted to and have the financial ability to help contribute to this so I don’t have to front all of it myself that would be lovely that tipped off uh it is expected or assumed that that tipped off the parties that be drew the attention of the Florida High School Athletic Association and you’re not allowed to pay for players meals and you’re not allowed to pay for players things like that uh if you are an employee of the school. So, he has now been suspended. They are worrying about fines and potential postseason bans coming to the school for the coach who cares about the kids putting up his own money to make their high school experience better. That’s just wrong. I don’t get it. Now, if he was if he were doing this and then going to like other high schools in the county and saying, “Hey, we’re giving our kids free meals. Why don’t you move in with somebody in our district and you’re taking like maybe if there’s other kind of uh you know, nefarious underworkings of the high school world that you can get mad about it, but if he’s just putting up like if if you suspend a dude, which by the way, he has come out and said uh and I’ll actually, you know, give his side of the story. Uh he said like I’ve already resigned. Like I you can’t suspend somebody who’s not a current employee. I’m not suspended. There’s no investigation. Uh I’m just out and if you don’t want me to to do this, I’ll go back to being a volunteer in the stands. And then he’s allowed to fund all of this. Right? If he’s not associated with the school, then he can. So So he’s like, I’ll go back to just, you know, being a supporter in the stands. I’m not like banned from campus. It’s the ultimate backwards, right? Which is, and you see it at the NCAA level, you see it at high school levels across the the country, but I guess this time it’s Florida High School Athletic Association uh taking their turn. Before you make a ruling, before you punish somebody, ask is this good or bad for the student athletes? That’s how every decision made by a uh youth and or college sports administrator should be made. Start with is this good or bad for the student athletes. Now, I understand if it’s against the rules, it’s against the rules. Okay? And if rules are there for a reason, rules are there for a reason. Uh this is a situation where you work with Teddy. This is a situation where you call up Teddy and you go, “Hey, listen. Uh that’s against the rules. So, uh you can’t continue doing it, but we love where your heart’s at. We love where your head’s at.” unbelievable willingness to spend your own money. We commend you for wanting to change these players lives. Let’s work together with the school, with the county, with with with the the FHSAA, whatever you call it, and and find a way where we can do this within the rules and the players can still get the benefits because there’s no doubt in our mind that that you are doing something good for the student athletes. it it like you can do both. The recent president, by the way, uh as the the Yahoo Sports article continues, uh there is a recent president for them punishing programs uh for players receiving free meals and Uber rides. Last year, several players at the First Academy were found to have received impermissible benefits, including a free Uber ride. The FHSAA uh hit the Royals with a two-year postseason ban and $36,000 fine as a result. So, I just want to be clear here. Teddy Bridgewwater paid for Uber rides for players to get to and from practice. Would you rather they walk? Exactly. What’s the harm? I’ve heard Florida’s a little toasty, a little hot, maybe around training camp, right? Uh I don’t get it. Yeah, I don’t get it. No. If he wants to take all 30 million he made from the Carolina Panthers and and and spend it to enhance the lives of youth uh sports participants, I commend him for it. Yeah. And that’s on him. He can do what he wants with his money. He’s not doing anything illegal or wrong. That’s crazy. It is. There’s there’s so many other people that Yeah. There’s that’s a good thing that he’s doing. There are By the way, I am the biggest advocate for youth sports in the world. I love what uh Greg Olsen again talk about Panthers Legends Youth Inc. he is a massive advocate for youth sports like done the right way. You will never hear me uh advocate for anything harder like more in passionately than youth sports. I think you learn life lessons. I think a lot of the things that I like most about myself I learned through youth sports. Like I will I am all in. There are so many people that deserve to be punished for the way they interact with treat youth athletes and and and high school athletes. There are so many bad coaches out there that are reliving their own whatever that that are are uh um let me think here like power trips that just got in because they want to be able to yell at kids and like having a whistle that everybody has to listen to. The fact that you get somebody who is pouring their own cash and I know he made a lot of money. $200,000 is $200,000. Like that’s a car, right? That that’s a that’s a a luxury vehicle that he could have bought and instead he helped the kids. And the fact that now he’s getting his name dragged through the mud is absolutely ridiculous. It’s so dumb. I just want to get that off my chest. Still a few more minutes here on the Adam Gold Show, so why don’t we talk uh a little baseball? How about a little a little Major League Baseball All-Star game? Uh by the way, we already made our picks uh for the home run derby tonight. Victoria rolled with Cal Raleigh. She went real real chalky. Plus 300 though. Decided to take a huge chance and take the guy having the unbel like the second most home runs before the All-Star game in history. But you know it’s not going to be him. It’s going to be someone who’s like plus 85,000 like Junior Camro who I picked who’s plus 1200. Uh do you know what is actually a shame about the home run derby? H uh it should be and it would be awesome if Cal Raleigh and and Aaron Judge and the the biggest stars in home run hitting all participated in the home run derby because that’s how the moments are made, right? I’d be cool if they took like the AL MVP trophy and and tossed it out there and said whoever wins the home run derby wins the the AL MV MVP trophy between Cal Riley and Aaron Judge. Like that’s the the the electricity. But part of me is also worried because we’ve seen guys uh have unbelievable first halfs, then they go to the home run derby and something about just swinging as hard as you can for an uppercut uh like tweaks their their swing just a little bit and then they they don’t have the same second half. Like I think it is massively important that stars are in the home run derby for the kids to watch, for new fans to be created, for the electricity of the event. But I’m also a little worried that Cal Raleigh is on pace for likely the best hitting season a catcher has ever had and he might tweak his swing in the wrong way in the home run derby. So I’m like some guys don’t do it. This is this is like my own personal conundrum because I’m like oh good he’s playing. Oh no, he’s playing. Please don’t get hurt. Yeah, it’s it’s not even just hurt. It’s like you know swings are such fine. It’s like a golf swing, right? You don’t even know you changed like the placement of your left pinky and now all you can hit is slice. Uh it’s it’s I’m I’m worried for him. But I want to see him win. But I’m worried for him. But it’s good that he’s there, right? But but but I know uh and not trying to throw shade at the girl who may have had problems with uh some things. The anthem. Hopefully they have that situation figured out for this year. If people remember last year’s anthem at the home run derby. I don’t remember it. Oh, you don’t? Uh Ingred something or another was highly intoxicated. Yes. Yes. Yes. She was awful. Which to be fair, I feel like I’ve recently heard her do a national anthem sober and it wasn’t much better. So, I just think that So, maybe she wasn’t Maybe she wasn’t talking. I know. Well, for a while like people were like, “Was she okay? Was something wrong?” Like, yeah. And so, she said that she might have had a problem, went to rehab, but she still sounds the same. So, so they have a good one. Yeah, I was gonna say they’re gonna have like a a a children’s television star or something. Just somebody that is like super squeaky clean to it this year. They should get the uh harmonas from hockey. Was it the Kings that have the the anthem, something like that. One of them has harmonas for the anthem. That was really Now, for the derby, it should be somebody big. It It should be like a superstar. Yeah. I mean, I hope it is. I didn’t know who this person was until she did it last year. Who’s like they should get like uh like uh I don’t know who’s uh who’s the espresso girl? That girl. Oh, Sabrina Carpenter. There you go. Somebody that’s like so hip and now. That that’s what they should do with the home run. I know. Is anybody No, I was going to say is anybody like dating like a Travis Kelce situation where they’re dating a Swift is is any old does any all-star have like a pop star girlfriend, right? I don’t know. Dating a singer somewhere. Who knows? Put them out there. Get Kelly Clarkson out there. Why not? Kelly Clarkson would be fantastic. Kelly Clarkson, unbelievable. Like, people don’t talk about that enough. My My wife is a big Kelly Clarkson fan just because of her talent. Uh, I don’t on her show, she does the the Now, I just get to nerd out on singing. I can’t I’m the least musical person on the planet. I can’t sing. I can’t understand beats or notes or anything. Um, so I am wildly impressed when like when videos co show up of like they go viral of like somebody writing a song. Oh, yeah. And that stuff fascinates me where they’re on the piano and they’re figuring out the lyrics and oh what about if we change the key like that stuff is bananas to me. She c she can do it all. Like on her show she does a little thing where she covers everyone else’s songs. Yeah. I don’t like if she asked if I were another singer and she asked me like, “Hey, can I cover your song?” I might say no. Do it better than me. And that’s out of respect cuz I’m like, “Well, then everyone’s going to take my version off their iPod and put your version on there.” So no, you can’t, Kelly. I appreciate the Thanks for asking. But no, unless you want a duet because I need to be on there somewhere. Exactly. Yeah. Uh but then I’m just getting blown off the stage right next to you. Might still bite you. Oh goodness. Um there was a whole bunch of all-star stuff I wanted to talk about, but we don’t have time. So instead, we’ll do this. Uh center Yannik Center and Carlos Alcarez uh battled in the Wimbledon final. The the two of them have now combined to win the last seven Grand Slam tennis matches. uh center beat Alcarez. I wouldn’t say it was it was each set was close but you know ended up being 3-1. Um people are forcing the rivalry in the 4:00 hour on my show the drive with Tim Donnelly on 999 the fan uh which follows this one on 999 the fan. If you’re in another market if you’re listening on another station somewhere else in the state you can find it on 999 the fans uh YouTube page livereamed. We encourage you to check it out. Uh, but we are going to ask for the best individual rivalries of all time. Okay? We’re talking people one-on-one monoe. I’m not talking Duke Carolina. We’re not talking Red Sox, Yankees. Talking individual players. And we want to hear from you. So, start thinking about it because I contend that we need more individual rivalries now. We’re in a weird drought of individual rivalries. Maybe Sinner and Alcarez can fill that. I know there’s a lot in the uh MMA world, or at least there was there for a chunk of time. There was a lot, but now there’s not beef. Yeah, they’re going away. They are a little bit, which is which is bad. It’s bad. So, we’re going to we’re going to see where the seeds are planted that we might be able to grow a rivalry. That’s in my show coming up next. Thank you to Adam and thank you to Victoria for letting me have some fun on the Adam Gold show. Hopefully, you did as well. Uh follow me on Twitter, Donnelly Sports, and uh I’ll see you next time.
