In the third round of the 2025 Genesis Scottish Open, Rory McIlroy carded a 4-under 66 to get to 11-under for the tournament, placing him two strokes ahead of the field and tied for the lead with Chris Gotterup heading into Sunday.
The PGA TOUR heads across the pond for the Genesis Scottish Open. The event, co-sanctioned with the DP World Tour, is set to boast a field consisting of many of the world’s top players including FedExCup and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, back in action for the first time since the Travelers Championship. Scheffler will be joined by 2022 champion Xander Schauffele and fellow two-time major champion Collin Morikawa. Recent U.S. Open winner J.J. Spaun is also in the field, meaning all four reigning major champions will tee it up this week. Robert MacIntyre returns to defend his home country’s open, which he won in dramatic fashion in 2024, and is attempting to become the first to go back-to-back in tournament history. Rory McIlroy, a previous winner at the Genesis, will be looking to regain form before The Open is played in his native Northern Ireland the following week.

Come on, Rory. Misses fairway miles right yesterday. This is on a much better line. Even back in the breeze, he will have no issues getting it home in two. Flush drive off two and three. Norman for the rest. [Applause] Oh, it’s a truly excellent try. Good lag quite close to the green here if he connects. [Applause] He’s drawn a decent lie. He’s got a wonderful angle. Doesn’t have to flirt with that bunker on the right whatsoever. I wasn’t going to have great control, but he just handles that so nicely. So nicely. Wonder if the first couple of feet of this are not kicking it just a bit to the right. Well, the ninth bird of the day over 10 the par five. Slight dog leg right now. Maroy. Well, they like it. Breeze coming into his face though. It’s blowing from the east and that is wonderful. scampers down these beautiful biscuit brown fairways. 271 yards left for Maroy. So, I don’t know how far that T-shot went. A mere 330 yards into the breeze. And this is stunning. [Applause] Man, that won here two years ago. I’ll have that for Eagle. Gosh, that’s such an impressive shot there. Frank was there last week to get to 10 under would have been just the second eagle. Victor Perez is the only other player that made eagle here today. Still, it’s the easiest of birdies. [Applause] Only three birdies at the 11th today. It’s a difficult hole location in the back right corner. That as you said before, Jimmy about 50 yards of roll on so many of these fairways back there. Yeah. Yeah. who was trying to punch that into the wind as you said and bounce it back there. That quite often happens when you’re trying to go low with a back foot shot. You’ll pull it left. Not bad. 20 ft for the birdie. Yeah. Unlucky with the lie. In New Zealand, it’s possibly the best course in the world. All right. After driving it in this was his score back in 23 in that horrendous wind for birdie came back in round two with h sorry round one with three birdies to finish and then started out with five birdies in his first seven holes yesterday. Quite a strong bit of left to right, but a birdie too from Maroy. Can he do it again? Stands are full on a beautiful afternoon. It’s warm. Oh, what a day. No. Just launches that. That might look rough. Just tries to muscle it down the fairway. Lengthy third shot for Rory here. Nearly 175 yds. Cannot go left. Be very careful if it catches that bank. Oh, this is wonderful. And it stays on the high side. Excellent shot from where he was. So, still a chance for Birdie. A familiar roar for Maroy again. 260 over those pot bunkers on the right. He’s got that no problem. Look at that. That’s why he took the fairway would drive. It would have rolled up against him. Well, he could have snuck it through the little gap. He could have. That was a a field goal attempt. It would have been good. Swing is looking good to me. Patient at the top. club has fallen right back down in the slot. He’s had his coach here all week. Of course, his approach here too, loves the moment. Huge throng watching and Rory throws it in there nicely just outside 10 ft for another birdie. [Music] looked like it wanted to turn. Stayed there. Hinge. They got a par five to play. Could do some things but likely in the final pairing tomorrow. He’ll definitely be the favorite sporting that new haircut. Said yesterday that the rust was almost all knocked off. What do you say to dad? Yeah, it was it was a good day. Um feel like we got the conditions today that the uh afternoon wave yesterday got. You know, it was a little breezy. Course firmed up a little bit. Um you just had to be a little bit more in control of your ball flight and and of your ball. Uh and I felt like I did a good job of that. I It was a bit of a slow start, but um you know, hit two really good shots into 10, made birdie there, and then felt like I um got a bit of momentum from that and and played a really good back nine. Trevor mentioned it uh at the beginning of your round that you just seem more relaxed and I have to wonder does being relaxed create great golf or does playing great golf create a more relaxed Rory Mroy. Uh it’s like the chicken or the egg, right? I think um I am more relaxed. I I’ve you know I’ve been over here for a couple of weeks and it’s been really nice to get back to, you know, it’s not home home but it’s a little closer to home. uh home home is next week. But um yeah, it’s been it has it’s been really nice to get back, see some familiar faces and um yeah, I you know, I took a good sort of 10 days off from golf, which I felt like was needed. Um and I think when I do that, I come back with a little bit more enthusiasm for practice and and excitement to to get back into it. You seem a little lighter and it might be because of the haircut. Could you just take the hat for us off? What what happened there, Rory? Um, you know, I’m getting a little gray as everyone probably knows and I stupidly thought that by going shorter it would take the grays out. And if anything, I think it makes me look more gray. So, um, but it’ll grow back. That’s the good thing. It’ll it’ll be in it’ll be perfect length for the Ryder Cup in in September. It could be the good luck haircut depending on what happens here tomorrow. Who knows? Thanks for joining us. Thanks for watching the PJ Tour on YouTube. For more, click here.
