18 Holes at Fairwood Park Golf Club. Every shot golf vlog from the course where I first started golf
[Music] over there just trying to sort him up okayish very loose opening shot that’s fine nice morning though [Music] b short that’s if that’s got the legs that’s a great shot wasn’t quite sure in the distance bit downhill and there’s a view back towards the tea and the fairway bunker there [Music] not bad outside chance of a four beautiful morning absolutely still as anything wonderful blue sky and as you look back yeah let’s hope it stays that’s fine you can see the greens have been treated but again this time of year essential for golf course maintenance to wake the course up for the spring but yeah that’s where he goes couple of bunkers at the front just catchy shopping good opening hole [Music] just on the right edge of the left bunker it should be okay just know you need to be far enough along to see around the corner [Music] yeah didn’t see it so the bass is steamed up just an easy eight iron nice wood packer drumming there [Music] let’s go that’s short that’ll do green’s a super bobbly but that’s absolutely fine so I just called the group through behind me just to give myself a little less pressure so here’s a quick look back so couple of bunkers at the front and there’s your look back down the hole i heard it land okay yeah just afraid into the sun definitely really difficult when it’s into the glare like that and you’re on your own so there’s a view towards the green from the dog leg corner it’s probably about 160 from here I’d say i’m actually just in the shadow of the tree i’ve gone over there i’ve been in there many times before as a junior and there’s your view back towards the tea [Music] b [Music] not sure just try and keep it low bit of water here on this hole as well so just looking back to the dog leg just on the right hand side there if you hit it it was in never mind i couldn’t even blame the greens on that was just me being stupid she was not far off [Music] doing a lot more to Fantastic red co so three bunkers around the front here guarding i tiptoed through and almost crept on and as you look back towards the tea so just a quick story time from me i remember this green actually the fourth green playing it in the winter one time had a lovely shot on pitched straight on didn’t realize the green was wet and frozen and then it sailed way over the back never to be seen again i always remember that family rhythm today [Music] this looks good the day is nice anyway and the course is good good stuff [Music] there’s bubbles in it so you can’t do anything about that that’s fine bit of a lottery never mind it’s nice being out golfing even if my game isn’t exactly firing yeah quick look back the holes bunkers either side there you go into the glare [Music] see it land but it’s not too bad [Music] take that take that you see back up to the hole so just a nice little gentle downhill path through but yeah it’s a nice shot on actually and a couple of bunkers one grass on the right as you look at it and the sand on the left that was close trying to split the bunkers maybe things are looking up dangerous thing to say I know so in between the two fairway bunkers here and be back to the tea i really obviously you can’t judge the greens here but I know that they are actually going to be very very good you can tell that they’re lovely and firm it’s just they’ve been treated so yeah it’s just can’t trust my score today but um you can see that the greens are going to be excellent so please don’t judge the course on this on the greens at the moment because they are and you can see that they are very very good and I’ve also had really good reports from the members that they’re excellent so yeah please don’t judge the greens that’s right that’s a nice shot there closest to the clubhouse here in the eighth T so uh yeah quick little panorama show you where you are so I think I might be 11th then the club down there in the 18th greens and yeah very pleasant this is a fairway bunker which I came over uh so fortunately had a good strike so a couple of bunkers short on the green and then fairway bunker down here and view back to the tea i can tell you that get a few falls but it doesn’t the score really doesn’t mean anything today with the greens just about playing the course and enjoying it and having nice nostalgia i remember this next tea actually looking back so uh yeah view down to the fourth there fifth T and then a little bit of a water to come over i remember off the back boxes this is quite quite a challenge [Music] [Music] that’s all right interesting noise i hit it building houses on here certainly don’t remember that when I was a little nipper playing here but certainly got the water down there and then you can just see the hills of Swansea in the distance so I’m just on the crest here the view back towards the tea can’t quite see it now just drop down a little bit swinging around there’s my drive lovely drive actually happy with that probably about 170ish 180 to go and be back down to the clubhouse and I think might be the 12th green i’m sure we’ll find out soon got to go bit heavy I think keep going right just below the front so I’ve just found the front fringe there on the ninth and I do remember this wizzed old tree hitting it many many times as a junior being very frustrated by it but yeah memories flooding back it’s lovely yeah oh thought had it yeah never mind not a bad plate hole yeah it’s a nice hole that one yeah lots of good memories and lots of frustrating ones of being a difficult one yeah nice nine there lovely straight off even the herring girls appreciated it yeah I’ve got a story to tell in a minute so just waiting for the green to clear um since I’ve played here which is obviously 20 odd um almost 30 years ago they’ve added a pond down the front here they’ve also added another pond here so on the 450 marker and there’s your view back to the tea so yeah quite a different hole to how it was before and I remember actually that all those trees were staked when I played so yeah it’s uh changed a lot as you would imagine in this time but yeah a nice looking hole actually that’s thin just work just run on the edge they’re very thin afraid of the water I think didn’t turn was convinced I was going to turn it 11 as they say wasn’t a bad hole poor chip though but uh yeah that’s a nice hole actually the addition of the water really adds a lot to that and as you look back up not as good as the last hole but it should be working okay time for my story in a minute so there’s a view back towards the T on 11 lovely pond uh slightly uphill this one i’m standing about the 150 marker ditch on the right my drive’s just down here about 145 to go maybe couple of bunkers on the green just so it’s for it to clear but yeah the story was that um I can even go and stand in front the story was um my first junior competition so I was about 14 years old we played a two-hole competition down there 10th i got a five i was playing off 36 i was really happy with that i thought great I got a chance of winning then I hit my drive into the cabbage on the right hand side was much higher rough then ended up getting a 12 i was devastated i came second and I won a pair of woolly head covers but yeah if only what could have been eh right try it’s not the best shot hey They’ve actually got a little well around the green where it hasn’t been punctured as it were or scarified so uh yeah and a nice flat putt there proves the greens are really really good quick look bonus look down the hole as well [Music] awful straight it is funny what you remember and I do remember listening to all the dogs now i remember that there was a dog’s kennels or something nearby so yeah it’s funny how they triggers the memories [Music] yes that’s a nice three happy with that so just a bunker behind me and the bunkers the front right off the tea as you play it and obviously take an extra club or two coming up the hill somehow that’s safe but yeah I just suddenly remembered or had uh visions of hay meadows on the left hand side here nice flashbacks yeah nice yeah this field just beyond the trees i’ll spin you around now i remember looking for golf balls in there as a young lad uh when you hit them off the off the tea there but yeah again lots of nice memories but yeah good stuff i’m enjoying this really am really really enjoying it hit it so this is an untreated green and you can see that it’s absolutely fantastic uh late March it’s wonderful on what was originally when I played it a very very wet Parkland course back in the uh late 80s you can see that the investments that they’ve made in the course have really paid off i mean these greens feel wonderful for the time of year lovely and uh you know this is a perfect pace um again for the time of year a little bit damp but no um very very good so please please please don’t be put off by the greens that you’ve seen i really do recommend this place it’s very very good and very very enjoyable parkland course and a quick look back so I’ve just stepped back on the 17th TE it’s actually just behind the trees and I’ll show you in a second uh this the 17th and that’s the the 14th T but you actually walk back here and peer through the trees and you’re actually looking onto the neighboring golf course of Klein which again is on my uh list of uh ones to play or film certainly played it um a few times as a as a youngster but yeah looking forward to getting back on that one it’s uh some great views on the top as well and you can just see the uh outskirts of Swansea from here as well just through the trees [Music] both of us hit trees that time klein and Fairwood god straight i’ll give it that let us past six never mind there’s a view back to the tea so short drive short second shot struggling a bit here but never mind the day is lovely [Music] always found that good [Music] this one’s the airport nearby there’s the drone so a quick look back big long green this one and a big bunker as well which I found so yeah decent power five this take the punishment it wasn’t exactly a brilliantly played hole but if you walk off with a six played as a par six it’s fine it’s on the right hand on that tree on the left edge of the tree on the right there i remember the paddock from being a youngster looks uh less overgrown than it was going to have a look now so it’s back towards the tea on 15 the off to the left you can see some of the landmarks of Swansea i think that’s Mount Pleasant over there memory served me right i’ll check and then going forward there’s a view up towards the hole looks like pond on the left just a bit further down on the right and then this area on the right used to have a lot more trees in it so I remember a lot of time in there as a youngster trying to hack out and also find my ball it’s good though bases on that’s all right that was a nice hole i think the guy is actually coming to scarify this green so uh made the most of it here’s a quick up back down as well [Music] water so as you look back to the TON 16 um signature hole here at Fairwood Park lovely water on the right and I just clung on so I think I might need to film this um not from behind that’s nice i think you can probably give me that one i certainly I am giving myself this one after a shot like that so yeah it sneaks in but yeah nice to par the signature hole there’s a lovely little pitching wedge shot there it was very very wet so uh yeah fortunate to stop down to the left that’s the sort of shot it’s all right bit left of where I wanted to go [Music] okay yeah obviously I managed to hit the ditch and it was funny cuz I was thinking all the way around Fairwood Park’s got a lot of ditches and um I hadn’t hit one until now so yeah karma gets you in the end but that’s a nice result [Music] yeah nice even though the guys just scarified this green screen you can again just see it’s really really good so yeah quality of this green is actually um yeah it’s it’s starting to shine through so I think in a week’s time they’ll be really really good so um yeah definite recommend for me this this place just another quick golfing reminisce while I’m at it and we’re on the 18th TE i remember my first ever round of 18 holes was on this course and I do remember funnily enough it’s just come back to me now the score that I got and it was 144 so yeah I’ve improved my golf a little bit since then and I think my second run was 128 but uh yeah it’s obviously great improvements or great strides of improvement at that age and I do remember having my first sub 100 round on this course as well so yeah lots of nice memories today yeah that’s good and remember you always want to be just over the crest of the hill give yourself a clear shot of the green so yeah typical shape but that’s uh that’s great there’s a view back towards the 18th T Park and swinging around this is on the crest about 160 out here pond on the left clubhouse further left and the green guarded by a couple of bunkers as well the right club sure it’s one of those ones that looks good in the air but uh no weren’t sure on it so and that’s got three or four people written all over it front of the clubhouse here we go is it a full pet it is well that was very very enjoyable indeed i really really I’m glad I played i’ll do an outro in a second i’ll just reposition and get somewhere quieter that was great so just a quick outro just had a lovely chat with a pro here um and uh just recapping about the greens and there’s lots of stories of the course very really interesting stuff um so just wanted to say what a pleasure it’s been playing here um lots of lovely memories and stuff of uh growing up and it’s amazing to see how the course has progressed actually and how it’s um the investment in it has really paid off um it’s a really pleasant parking course um really enjoyed around here um like the back line i love the flow of the background and certainly the ninth hole is one of my favorites here and as long along with 18 and 16 um but yeah just really enjoyable part of course again really well draining so um that’s something I never thought I would say certainly um driving to the course this morning I was quite skeptical about it being quite wet but that’s not the case anymore um they’ve done a lot of work on it and it’s really really paid off um as you saw the greens have been treated and I know for a fact that they will be very very good in a couple of days time you know once the uh remaining work has been done on the greens so please don’t be put off by the greens they are excellent they feel really good underfoot um and certainly the couple of greens that weren’t treated were holding the lines really really well so very very good indeed green fees excellent as well good value um so nothing to love about it it’s a really really pleasant course really enjoyable super super friendly members some of the friendliest I’ve met on course very very good indeed had an excellent time i may thoroughly recommend it [Music] [Music]

I was itching to add some more courses to my played and filmed list but work had been very busy for several weeks. With a brief lull and some decent weather forecast I hoped to play a few more out West. I’d originally planned to play both Fairwood and Langland on the same day to give me a nostalgia overload, being the two courses on which I learned to play golf.
First up and on an early spring morning I found myself heading on to the Gower at Fairwood Park near Swansea airport. A pleasant drive over the common and down the access road brings you to the club, set in a rolling woodland setting. Parking up and getting ready to play, the memories started flooding back of teenage years, having my first group lessons with a raft of other boys and girls of my age. The practice area where I learned was still there and with my mind awash with bygone thoughts, I stepped on to the first tee to reconnect.
The course itself is a lovely rolling parkland/woodland mix with slight elevation changes but nothing too excessive. The first few holes run around the perimeter of the woodland, all being bordered by mature trees on their left. Challenging holes too with the long first, and dog legs for the second and third, it is not an easy start. Unfortunately, I’d chosen the day on which the greens had undergone hollow tinning so they weren’t at their smoothest, with the majority of them showing the side effects of the aeration. The few greens which hadn’t been treated were very good for the time of year though, showing the true underlying quality of the greens which are now immeasurably better in quality than when I was a member back in the 1980’s, and this was also backed up by all the members I spoke to on my round who praised the overall quality of the course and the work that’s been carried out.
I played pretty badly on the front nine, being quite inconsistent but managed to pull myself together towards the back 9 to post a very respectable score. It’s a very accessible course and one that rewards good play. Most holes do have bail out room but you must be wary of the numerous ditches that can catch errant shots.
As mentioned, the course is now in much better shape than when I was originally a member due to the investments and drainage works that have been made. It was originally a very wet course but this is no longer the case with both fairways and greens benefiting massively.
Overall it’s a lovely welcoming course with super friendly members and good value green fees. Definitely one to consider if you’re in the area and fancy a super game of golf!👍

Pointless scoring when greens are like that. Can’t be helped I know but it spoils the day really.
That 7th hole can be a nightmare when the winds up.
great video. are you currently a member of a course, or do you just go about playing different courses.
good morning thank you for an excellent video. Looking to play Minchinhampton soon
