It’s impossible to pick who has been the best player on the PGA Tour this season out of Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler.

Both have performed to incredibly high levels, and they have undoubtedly separated themselves from the rest at the top of the game.

Scheffler – the world number one – has three victories to his name in 2025 including a major championship, while world number two McIlroy can lay claim to the same.

The Northern Irishman completed the career Grand Slam at The Masters in April, and that will undoubtedly hold huge sway in the PGA Tour Player of the Year voting.

McIlroy has praised Scheffler’s tremendous consistency in the past.

And at the same time, Scheffler said McIlroy’s win at The Masters motivated him to work even harder.

There is definitely a real mutual respect present between them.

But which player deserves to win the PGA Tour Player of the Year award more out of McIlroy and Scheffler this season?

Rex Hoggard and Ryan Lavner make Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler picks

The race for the Player of the Year award will come down to who performs better throughout the course of the remaining two months of the season.

Golf Channel journalists Ryan Lavner and Rex Hoggard have weighed in on the debate.

Lavner was asked who is the PGA Tour player of the year right now.

He said: “That’s a great question. This is fully a toss-up. I do think that the remaining two months of the PGA Tour season is going to determine it, because the resumes are going to be very, very close. I think right now I would give the edge to Rory McIlroy slightly just because of The Players Championship. The award is voted on by his peers and completing the career Grand Slam will hold a lot of sway with his peers. If I had to pick right now, which I don’t, I would take Rory just slightly.“

Then Hoggard chimed in with his opinion on the matter.

He said: “I’m going to come back and go the other way. I’m going to say Scottie Scheffler, he has been more consistent over the course of the season. I see where Lav is coming from with the historic value of what happened at The Masters. There is still some time, we have The Open Championship and the play-offs.“

Both make very good points, and it really is incredibly difficult to pick one or the other.

That said, Scheffler has a major and a Signature Event to his name as well.

It really is a toss of a coin right now, and whoever performs better at The Open Championship next and during the play-offs next month will undoubtedly be named the PGA Tour Player of the Year for 2025.
