Michael Kim’s run at the truest championship came to an abrupt end at Philadelphia Cricket Club as the PGA Tour standout withdrew mid round on Saturday due to a back injury. The 31-year-old, who’s been enjoying a strong 2025 campaign and made his Masters debut last month, was part of the Elite 72 player field for the signature event where Rory Mroy entered as the defending champion. Despite beginning his third round, Kim pulled out after 12 holes. Michael Kim WD during the third round of the truest championship back injury. The PGA Tour confirmed in a statement. Kim later addressed the situation on social media, posting, “Back wasn’t great to start the week and aggravated it during the last two days. We’ll get treatment and look to get back as soon as possible.” Notably, Kim was playing solo during the third round following a withdrawal from his playing partner, Justin Rose. Rose, a fellow PGA Tour veteran, withdrew before teeing off Saturday after a rough second round in which he shot a seven overpar 77, marred by two double bogeies and seven bogeies. Rose cited illness as the reason for pulling out. Dot Kim’s withdrawal will be a disappointment in what has otherwise been a breakout season. Beyond his encore success, Kim has also gained popularity off the course, particularly for his engaging presence on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. Known for offering candid insights into life on tour, Kim has developed a loyal fan base with his tournament reflections. His post during his debut at Augusta National were especially wellreceived. Reflecting on his Masters experience, Kim tweeted last month, “What a freaking tournament. I still can’t believe some of the shots that Rory hit, good and bad. The brain is a crazy thing and can make you do crazy things. Super stoked for him. He genuinely is a good guy. Great that he finally got this King Kong off his back. He continued, “It’s so interesting when scores go up on leaderboards.” When Rory’s first hole was posted, there was a groan then a big cheer when he made birdies. It was definitely a pro Rory crowd over Bryson. This won’t be the last Augusta themed post, so keep an eye out. Kim also thanked fans for their support, adding, “Thanks for following my Augusta Diaries, especially those who mentioned it to me in person this week. I hope to do it again next year.” With treatment underway, Kim now turns his attention to recovery, hoping to return to competition soon and continue his standout 2025 season.
