In this video I review the Minion Plus rangefinder from CaddyTalk USA and explain why it may be better than those better know more expensive brand out there. Modes like magic slope and caddy mode make this golf rangefinder a strong competitor to other on the market.

This is the Minion Plus from Caddyy Talk. And this little rangefinder, only the size of basically two golf balls, is small but packs a huge punch and it’s got a really cool feature that makes this a game changer for rangefinders. What’s going on everybody? Welcome back to Rough Golf. Jake here and today we’re doing a review on the Minion Plus from Caddyy Talk. Now, I’ve been a big Caddyy Talk fan. Ever since the Cube came out, they’ve got some gamechanging technology in that rangefinder, and that technology has actually found its way into the Minion Plus from Catty Talk. Another benefit is that it’s actually cheaper than the Cube. So, if you want to benefit from that great technology, you have that option if your budget is on the lower end for a golf rangefinder. Now, the Minion Plus comes in a small form factor. You can see right now it’s roughly the same size as the palm of my hand. And I wear an extra-L large glove if that’s a good frame of reference. And it comes in this little case that you can actually use this belt clip to clip onto your belt during the round. Now, I don’t typically wear the uh rangefinder on my belt. I find it a little bit distracting in my swing. Although, I’ve played a few holes with this one clipped to my belt and I don’t even know that it’s there. It’s not very heavy, coming in at only 99 g. It’s got this awesome hard case. There’s a little lever here that you can move back and then the unit itself actually slides out of the case. There’s probably a little magnet in there, but that main plastic strap there is really going to hold this thing in. I’ve been walking the course with it, swinging with it, and uh there are no issues with this thing accidentally falling out and getting left behind. On the top of the unit, you’re going to have two buttons. One is the point and shoot function. The next one is mode. This is going to allow you to turn the magic slope on and off. I’ll get into that a little bit later. Caddy mode, which is the game-changing technology that’s now found its way into the Cub’s little brother, the Minion Plus. And then you can obviously turn slope off if you’re in a competition mode. The Minion comes with a small rechargeable battery back here. It’s USBC. They actually do include a USBC to USBA charging cable in the box along with a microfiber cloth. One of the things that I really enjoyed about uh the Minion Plus experience when I was opening the box is that it feels premium. Catty Talk has put a little bit of extra effort into designing a really unique box as you can see here on the screen. And the opening is just it gives you a little something extra to be excited about. Now, aside from those two buttons on the top and the charging port located in the back, which does have a cover, you have the actual viewfinder adjustment ring. This is going to allow you to dial in that focus so that you can make sure it’s suited to your eye and your placement where you ever wherever you position the uh rangefinder up by your eye. Super helpful. Very hard to video though. So, actually what I’ve done is I’ve I’ve tried really hard to show you guys what the actual internal uh viewfinder looks like on this rangefinder. It’s hard to do, but I did it. And what I can say is that um I like the cube from Caddyy Talk and their their colors a little bit better. The color here for the Minion Plus is like a maroon uh maybe a dark purple color. And uh it can sometimes be a little bit difficult to distinguish if you’ve got some uh trees in the background because it doesn’t really pop off the screen unless you’re going up against the green or a fairway shot or something like that. Now, magic slope. What does that do? Basically, magic slope when you point and shoot the pin or your location, it’s going to factor in the trajectory of the ball where you are in relation to that point. Now, caddy mode is really where this little device shines. This is the gamechanging technology. You can toggle the Minion Plus into caddy mode, shoot your ball, then shoot your target if it’s the green or a landing spot in the fairway, and then the device calculates the difference in distance between the two points and gives you an accurate distance measurement. Think of all the ways you can use this distance from the start of a hazard to the end of a hazard. Think about a long water hazard that’s that’s maybe wide across the fairway, but not very deep. You can shoot the depth of the hazard and you know exactly what club range you’re going to be in. So you can either be too short or too long. That way you’re not in the hazard. That is very handy. You can also measure bunker distances and lengths with this which is super helpful because you know the entire width and length of the bunker based off of that caddy mode function. So this is a prime example of when you can use the caddy mode function on the Minion Plus. I’m here by the cart. My ball is right over there. I’ll zoom in so that you guys can see it. And then the flag is way up there. So, so what I’m going to do here is go ahead and put this into caddy mode. And I’m gonna shoot my ball. Says about 30 yards from here. And then I go up and I’m going to shoot the flag. And that does the math and it works out to about 104 yards. Okay. So 104 yards from this point. Now what I’m going to do is go ahead and take you guys over to the ball and I’m going to do a standard shot with slope of course. caddy mode factor slope in as well to see how accurate the two measurements are. Okay, so here we are at the ball. I’m going to go ahead and take a measurement to the pin. [Music] Exactly 104. I I can’t make this stuff up. The technology is that good with Caddy Talk in the Minion Plus. Now, there are a couple downsides in my opinion of the Minion Plus. The small form factor, while good for some, might not be good for others. If you have large hands that shake a lot, this might be a difficult rangefinder to use. You might want a larger rangefinder to give you better grip. If you play in heavy wind conditions, being that this is a smaller, lighter unit, it may wobble on you a little bit. It may be more difficult to get a solid reading in those really heavy windy conditions. The other issue that I have with this is that the colors for the target where you actually uh point and shoot the laser being that maroon slightly purpley color, they just don’t stand out enough against uh the trees. And if you’re trying to shoot, you know, close to the rough, maybe for that caddy mode, um it’s difficult and you can lose it in the trees a little bit. So, I would like to see the Minion Plus have a brighter or maybe a different colored like a neon orange or a neon uh like red or something like that for the target inside the actual unit where you line it up and shoot for your distance. That maroon color, it’s just it’s a little easy to get lost. Now, I’m nitpicking here, guys, because this is a very good unit, and the price for this unit is only $249.99, making it much cheaper than the Cube from Caddy Talk, which has the same Caddy Mode technology, which is a real winner for this device. Um, but it’s a great entry-level rangefinder, and you should definitely try it out. If you guys want to see more golf gear reviews, then check this playlist out right here. I’ll catch you in the next one.
