WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – It’s building up buzz.

“It’s going to be something special. I think once a lot of people catch on to what’s going on here, it’s going to have a big boom,” said Brandon Wilson, President of the North Country Disc Golf Club.

That excitement for a new 18-hole disc golf course that is almost finished in the southwest part of Thompson Park.

Brandon Wilson, Co-founder and President of the North Country Disc Golf Club, has been involved in this project that got its start during the COVID-19 pandemic. The city used federal COVID money to cover the $45,000 dollar cost.

“I’m so passionate about this, so I can’t tell you how excited I am,” said Wilson.

Parks and Recreation Program Manager Jim Scordo says the course will give residents something new to check out.

“Something different, we wanted to do something on the southwest side of Thompson Park, I mean, they have the splashpad, you have the pools, around here now you get to check out all the trails and beautiful time to play disc golf and get some good exercise as well,” said Scordo.

Officials are hoping that the course can open this summer, giving Watertown residents a chance to brush up on their skills or try out a new hobby.

“The short tee pads, very good for beginner players, still offer a little bit of a challenge, so you know if you have experience, you can still play the shorts and still have a little bit of a challenge. And then we’re setting up long tees as well that will be more courteous to the professional and seasoned players that are up here playing,” said Wilson.

“I think this will benefit the community because it’s something new, it’s something that I don’t think we’ve ever had in the city of Watertown. People are always looking for new and exciting things to do, and this is the perfect one to bring you right into a hidden gem that is Thompson Park,” said Scordo.

After the tee pads are installed and hole information signs are put up, the course should be ready to open and be open to the public.
