John Deere Classic Kids with Dan Boever

Dozens of young golfers came to Wednesday’s Pro-Am day at the 2025 John Deere Classic to enhance their game!

That’s one more shot. So you can, you can hit, you can hit a lot of these, that should be a little lower that should hit the bail. There we go, hit the backside of it. I don’t know if you saw that. Now the other thing when you get older. Um, you have to get clubs that. That have more flexibility in the shaft. So they, so they, you don’t have to have. Just for the adults here because of the young people, I lost out on 9 pretty good jokes right here. Can you imagine if I showed up for the pro-am today and I had a driver like this? Wouldn’t that be great? Boy, if you could, if you can learn to hit it. Where did that go? I lost it. You see it? Where was it? Yes, it was right down the middle, wasn’t it? OK, let’s try, let’s try one more right in the middle. OK. All right, well, that’s an easy one right there. Can I show you one of my favorite things to do at a pro-am? Here’s one of my favorite things to do. If I get, if I get teamed up with somebody, here it is right here. Watch what happens. I David, are you right there? Are you? OK, so if I’m playing in a pro-am and I get up, I wanna hit, I’m gonna start like this. This is, this is gonna be me with my playing partners, so they don’t know if I’m any good or not. And then what I’ll do is I’ll, I’ll start doing this right here. I want, I want it to go this way. I want it to go like that. OK. And then, and then what I’ll do is I’ll get it and do that right there. I know. Yes, it’s right there, and they don’t know what’s going on and you just give it one of those. You can have a lot of fun, big people at a tournament. We don’t want to kill a tour player this week. Let me show you one of my favorite clubs. Look at this thing right here. Look at that. Look at that, you saw what a regular driver looks like, right? There’s what a regular driver looks like. Can you imagine showing up at some event with this right here? Walking out on the first hole. You got this thing just pulling out on the first hole. It is, it weighs about 38 pounds. Yeah. They don’t go very far with it because it’s hard, it’s hard to swing. But I have one, I have another one in here. That this is, this is more like if, if, if I gotta ask again, this one’s for the big people, if I got a chance to play Augusta. This is what I would do. I was, I was banned from Pebble about 2 years ago for. Doing those top shots and so now I can’t go to Pebble, but the next place would be Augusta. Can you imagine if I showed up at Augusta because I believe they have different rules there. Than they do at other clubs. Anybody here remember Augusta? No. How about me showing up at, at that place doing this right here? Listen to the sound. Huh, I’m gonna wait till the 2nd hole so when I get kicked off, at least I’ve played 2 holes. Listen to that. It’s like I just came out of the softball league right there. I would be banned from every range. All right, so that’s, those are big clubs. Let’s, let’s try to do something with a little smaller one. How do you hit with that? I have no idea. Huh? Look at this. Look at this. Oh my gosh, this thing is so tiny. I don’t even know. There we go. Yeah, that should get a couple of LI’s out of the adults. I don’t know if the kids understand quite fully. That was hard, this one’s a little harder. This is a ball on the end of a shaft. I used to hit it on this side, that became easy, so now I hit it on the other side. One ball on one ball, these misses. Uh, again, for the adults, this is a putting aid. Cleveland made this putting aid called the Putter ball. They must have sold 10s of these. Yes You broke me. Can you imagine? Please, God, don’t let me break a glass or kill a tour guy right here, right there, right there. Yeah, kids have no idea. Adults, you know better. If none of that works for you, how about this right here? You can get one of these old school. You wanna find the fairway right there. That’s odd. Oh, right, let’s, let’s try a couple of these different tea heights. Let’s see what works for you. You’re young, I suggest you go home, get a bunch of teas and practice to see which of these tea heights works for you. So here’s normal tea height right here. Good, decent, you can put it up on a stick, maybe a pop bottle. Relatively good. Those will break, so maybe we’ll go up just a hair higher. And then what I’m gonna do. Is uh Did you get that on there because I didn’t get it on nothing. It was glorious, but I would. I just want you to know it’s, it’s, it’s doable and uh it’s supposed to be later. I did. Why don’t I go right through the hole? Should I go right through it now? Right through so afraid to hit the other ones. So much for that big finish. So how about here? This is a good height. Oh yeah, favorite height. Again, again, for the, for the grown-ups here, imagine walking on this tee box over here today in the pro-am and putting this in the ground. Right there. They tend to draw, so you want to take it right. Little baby draw. All right. Alright, I feel a little lost. Thank you. What if you don’t like all those high teas? You want to go old school, you want to do it, you don’t need a tea, just take your 3 pack, you’re right? Just take a 3 pack, set it down on the ground. You don’t need a fancy tee. You can go right here, watch where this goes. Look in the middle, coming down right in the middle, perfect. Keep your mulligan right here on the tee with you. You can’t. Oh, it gets worse. Do some of your parents drink when they play golf? Oh, that was an affirmative really quick. Why would these young precious kids know that parents? How about 12? You want to screw with somebody? Put down a 12 pack. Just put the box down. Don’t warm up, don’t go to the range, nothing. Just put the 12 pack down. Out it goes. Looking out there in the middle by the blue flag coming down perfect. Huge applause. People going crazy. That’s all right. All right, this is, let me change this, uh, let me, let me, uh, do one thing here. I want to help you young people, as you start, as you’re gonna get into this, you’re gonna learn that you’re, you’re probably gonna learn to slice it. OK. And then what happens is you, I, I have a lot of friends in the golf business now, my friend over here in the blue shirt, he, he made this driver for me. His name’s Ben Showman. He works with all the top players for Cobra and Puma. So if you slice. And this is, this is what I was doing before I met Ben. Watch this. Let’s say I want to hit it at that green flag. Watch where my golf ball would go. See the green flag through the thing that used to be there? OK, here we go. Ah, Right. If I went down that range today, right now and ask all of these professionals. Uh, how much they see that it would be a lot. What’s the next thing out of your mouth when you do this? Don’t say it. Shoot. Number 2, Mulligan. I’m gonna go ahead and take my mulligan. So what happens is our feet go a little left. We cut across it. And it goes right. True. Then we’ll go far left, parents, I should get a couple of amens right here, Father left, cut it more, there it goes. It’s not a swing issue, big people, it’s an alignment issue. You’ve got to aim far enough left. Thank you again, Ben, for doing this. So if I want to hit it at that green flag, I’m gonna probably have to aim at that dude right there. In the cart, old man. So I’m gonna aim at that green flag, and I know some of you are thinking, oh, that looks silly, that doesn’t look right, but am I not square to the target? So I’m going to take it right over the top of him. Hold your finish. Look at that green flag right now. It should be landing right about right there. Might even have clipped it. Yeah, no, this works. Farther, farther you aim to the left, the more it slices. You can’t hit it out of bounds left, it will not go out of bounds left. Watch, you might even see some guy on Sunday trying to win this thing doing that. Big people. I did a show at Oakmont a couple of years ago. Jack Nicklaus was in the crowd. I said, Jack Nicklaus, my whole life I heard him say, you have to take away missus from one side. So I hear about 6 of these. I said, Jack Nicholas taught me this, yada yada yada. I hit 6 of them would have fit on a tabletop. They were good. I turned around, I said, Jack Nicholas out, he stood up, looked at everybody, says, I don’t know him. I never met him. That’s not true. If you ever want to have fun and somebody pulls up in a golf cart right there, yeah, you can mess with them. I’ll go through my pre-shot routine right here. Here we go. After number 6, he looks at me and goes, Hey, I don’t think you’re trying to hit it in the hat. I put a big hand for my man right here, he’s he’s never gonna speak to me again. You’re a good man. When, when you play in a tournament like this, um, sometimes you got some of the best players in the world, and I’m so excited for you guys to be out here. I, I, I started playing golf when I was 13. I knew I wanted to play pro baseball, but I started when I was 13 years old, and I, I didn’t, I wasn’t a member at a country club. I’m gonna show you the bag I had right before I started doing long drive just to show you. You don’t, you don’t have to have fancy clubs. This was the bag that I had right here. It’s not too fancy, is it? And now, now I’ve done shows all over the world for 28 years, 2000 golf shows. So I’m just glad you’re out, whatever age you are. We have probably people less than 10, clap if you’re less than 10 here today. What if you’ve never raise your hand if you’ve never picked up a golf club before and this is the first time. Good, are you in trouble already? All right, so let’s look at, let’s just, uh, we’ll hit a couple of quick shots here just to kind of get ready and get loose. He talked about my baseball background. Uh, you’ll notice that I hit a lot of these shots off of, uh, high tea. Like a baseball player would. Not suggesting that But, uh, we’ll see how this goes. We’ll just hit a couple and we’ll get loose. Well, let’s do this. How many of you, just so I know you’re real golfers, how many of you would like to see me hit that ball picker? That’s why I’m standing here in front of you today and not doing some of these other things. No, I like this tea because you could do a lot of things. One last try right there. I think he’s, he’s in my mark right there, right there, a little low. I’m gonna hit the flag now. You’ll find that I call most of these shots after I hit them. Young people care about distinctly different things than grown-ups. I have a putter that I used to hit between 300 and 320 yards. That’s far. Right? Let me ask you again so you understand, that’s far, right? Kids don’t care about that. They just want to see if you can hit something or break something. They don’t care. You hit your putter. So here’s what I’m gonna try right here. I’m gonna try to hit that ball right there and knock it off there. Would that be cool? Yes, it would. I don’t know that I could. Oh, how about a ball and a ball picker right there. OK, how many did that take? That’s about how many it normally takes. You should clap or something right there. Are you just stuck? Are you just stunned? Here’s, here’s the other thing you can do here, you can hit these high. Now, these will be hard to see, but here’s what my goal is. My goal is I’m gonna keep it in the air for 8 or 10 seconds and I’m gonna land it up by this red flag. OK. It’ll be hard up there, so I’ll let you know. Keep your eye on it in the air for 8 seconds, 9 seconds by the red flag. Oh, that’ll be a good one, right edge of the green, just look to the right of the red flag coming down right about right there. OK, nothing, nothing out of you losers. Adults are like, ah, you know, it wasn’t that close. All right, let’s hit one of the hair closer. That’s what I should stop. If I was smart, big people, I would stop, get it on the green. I will move it over, there’s a, there’s a bit of breeze. Hit the ball mower. I think it’s called a ball mower. I like that. We’ll go with ball mower. You’ll give me 10 bucks, all right. He’s like, no. I will tell you, I’m not 100% with this. I’m probably 78%, 78. I will tell you a lot of times when it gets into the white part of the clouds, it’s hard to see when they hit. No, for the big people, you have to understand this. I did my very first golf show in 1997. I came out of baseball and, uh, I started going to long drive events and mainly because I was slightly overweight and I hit it far. This is for the big people. And I did my first golf show and this guy comes up to me afterward and he goes, Hey, I saw Chichi Rodriguez do an event. He put two balls on the ground. He had a fade with one and a draw with the other, and he made him hit. And he looks at me with his face, he goes, Can you do that? Like no. No, why are you being a I’m better with the driver, so I’m gonna hit it up, keep an eye on it, we’ll see, off to the right, here goes the first one, straight up. There it is. Keep an eye on it. When you go to a long drive event, they try to have long shafts, it creates more speed. So I have an array of clubs here that are different lengths. Let’s try this one first. Let me see this one. I got, I got to set it up first to see if I can do it. OK I can do that. Come, come over here, you just, just hold it. Let’s hold it off the ground. I want to see how long, just keep it about an inch or so off the ground. I want to see how long you can keep it there before your arms start to tingle. Yeah, no, oh, look at you, stud, OK. Good hit. That’s the leader right there. OK, that one would allow you to hit it super far, but if you, if you want to hit it, and it’s tougher to hit these right here. Let me find this for you. So So obviously this club would be harder to hit. Because the shaft is not as far and so. This is a good length for maybe one of you guys that are starting out. This is a great length here, but you can still hit it. Oh, that got the ball picker right there too, with the short pluck. Keep an eye. That dude hates me right now. OK, but we’re gonna do a long drive contest right now. Come over here, sir, right here. Look at this right here, huh? Do you know how silly these two men are about to look? OK, here’s my two rules. You can’t kneel and you have to use two hands. I’m gonna give you 2 shots at it. We’re gonna measure the longest one. Yeah, you’ll tee it up. You’ll probably want to tee it up. OK. Here we go. I just want to see what kind of talent we have here. You were against him. If you want to aim for the glass, that’s fine. I don’t think you can get it to the glass. Oh, you’re killing me. Don’t break the glass. aim over here. Say no to drugs. Put that on there. He almost broke the glass. OK, over to the right. That’s a pretty good hit right there. Go ahead. I wanna, I wanna want you to pay attention to this. So this is left-handed, right? So you just have to, you have to make another arrangement on this. One of the things that I like to do with these drivers, because I mentioned that I’m getting older all the time, I’m gonna, at a certain point, and this again for big people, you’re gonna get to a point where you have to hit a driver on everything. You young people, you don’t have to worry about it now, but if, if you’re a young person or an older person, let’s say I have a driver and I want to just land it on that green right there. That first green, the red one, that’ll be fine, be right there. Where’s that $10 young man? Let’s say we’ll go for the black checkered flag over here. This is a little short one, good distance, 120, 115, right over by that red flag, that’s the one we were aiming at. What’s that over there on the other side? Maybe we can aim at one of these, one of these bales, and then go right above it and land it on the green. I’m terrible at this. No, I know I do. You wanna try the high tea? Uh, just one drill that you can do that would help you. Be good with wedges. This is a trick that I learned. So if you can, a lot of people can do this right here, right? Then you gotta learn to stop it on there. You can learn to stop it, then maybe you can have it go both wedges just back and forth. Then you can have it go. Or just around Let me show you my favorite. Here’s what I’m gonna do. I’m gonna take it. I’m gonna hold it on the wedge and I’m gonna take it in the air and flip it while it’s in the air. Are you ready? Here we go. Let me get it scooped.
