If your shots feel weak, soft, or just lifeless, there’s one thing you’re missing. And it’s not just your grip, your stance, or your swing speed. It’s something deeper, something you’ve never been shown before. But once you feel it, everything changes. James came to see me, a really good golfer. He was battling golf ball compression. He really didn’t feel like he was getting the biggest bang for his buck. Now, that’s the the ingredient that gives every golfer the biggest smile, doesn’t it? When you get that angle of attack correct, and you really feel like you’re squeezing that golf ball between club face and ground. There was a couple of ingredients that I really needed to change in his game. And the starter was, of course, his hold. He was uber weak with his left hand. His left hand, the thumb was down the middle of the golf club. And unfortunately his golf swing in his back swing was getting absolutely as short as could be. When you have a weak grip as a good player, the more you make a long back swing, the more that face relative to the path line is becoming more and more open. The shorter you make a back swing, the more it feels like you can get the club face back to the golf ball. So, the first thing we did was get the grip stronger. Now, of course, for someone that’s come from a weak hold, the only thing a golfer can ever feel is that they’re going to hit it left because the grip, if you’ve watched that video up there, has all of a sudden created more kink in the left hand. Now, ultimately, when people see a kink in the left hand, they immediately think, well, you’re just hooding the face. Not. So, I’m trying to create form and function in the left wrist. So, if you get the grip in the right spot, and if you haven’t done so, get yourself into the press up position. Put your fingers pointing away from you. Goodness me, the things I do for YouTube. Get the fingers pointing away from you. Pop your hand on the grip. Take hold. And you can see how I’ve got that kink in there. Now, at that point, I needed to show him how to unload the golf club. What do you mean? Make a grip strong and then try and show someone release. Surely that means that you’re going to hit it left. Absolutely incorrect. When you have that hand in that fingernails away from you spot on the golf club, it now means that the forearm can externally rotate. The forearm can externally rotate. And you can see that golf club is swinging and unloading. Now all of a sudden you’ve got a stronger hold which makes your face to path value more negative which gives you more ball speed. There’s your compression. There is your golf ball compression in a nutshell. The minute you create less dynamic loft, you create more ball speed. You create more compression. to create a bigger bang for your buck. So, when we now get him to swing through, I’m looking for him to still unload the golf club. There’s the pressure and there’s the swing. There’s the pressure down on the grip. There’s the swing of the club head. Now, as that golf club is swinging, can you see that the loft is still retained? And I can see that I’ve got some shape in my left wrist. So all of a sudden we got him feeling that he could unload the golf club. And as he unloaded it to start with, he still got a few balls going down to the left. Now all of a sudden, because he had a short back swing, I could now encourage him to open up his right hip. So I simply got the old wedge of love out. I pop the wedge on his right foot. The wedge of love. Goodness me, Stuart. We now get him to feel how that right foot can start to push, which now starts to open up his right hip. Now, if you haven’t watched this video up here where I talk exquisitly about the swing circle, this right leg really will open up that hip and really will start to move the circle more around the golfer. Now, I’ve got him feeling like the right hip can start to move more open. It’ll open his chest up and with the good grip it’ll now start to shift his path in a slightly different orientation which will allow him to start to change the path line which is now complementaryary of the face to path. You can see the jump of the path suddenly pushed out to the right because I opened up that right hip. So we’ve now got a faceto path value that’s negative. There’s his ball compression. Now I’ve got a path that start to being more complimentary. What you can then encourage a golfer to do is loosen the grip pressure. The grip pressure is crucial because when we start to change direction in a golf swing, the lighter the grip pressure, the more the golf club can lag and load. There’s the load. I’m pulling on the golf club. That’s the load of the club, which now gets the club unloading later in the swing. So now we can encourage more angle of attack. Now the angle of attack increases. It was two down. Now it’s gone to four down. Now the path is still straight because the right hip is further back. And we’ve got an angle of attack and a faceto path value. Yes. Angle of attack and faceto path value that works hand in hand. For those of you that don’t know, the more you hit down on a golf ball, the more the face will try and point to the right of target. And that’s why casting and a crap grip is useless, because the crap grip that’s opening the face is making you unload the club too soon. That’s why you can’t get a good angle of attack. So, this grip, this right hip, all of a sudden gave the golfer more room and a feeling that the face wasn’t going to point right at that point. The dynamics of the golf swing start to change. The dynamics of the golf swing start to change. So, now the back swing’s longer. Now, the back swing’s longer because the hips moving and I’ve got some load. Now, I can get some more speed. I can get some more speed in the down swing. That extra speed all of a sudden makes the golfer want to move more. So getting that grip right, opening that hip up, loading the shaft on the way down really got him feeling like he can move around the golf ball. So the grip in conjunction with the hip turn allowed for more time to load the club in the down swing. Loading the golf club in the down swing is crucial. And the best way of doing that is feeling like you can get the club light in the hold and feeling like you can let that weight dictate your wrist angles in the change of direction. None of this bowing nonsense. Just allow your wrist angles to behave how they want to. But it’s important if you’re someone that’s coming from a weak side of life golf grip, taking it in your left hand and now feeling like you can swing the club. There’s the load. There’s the swing. There’s the load. There’s the swing. Can you see how that club is unloading? It’s unloading with loft. It’s not unloading with flip and turn down as many people will want to jump in on. that club is unloading because the way most golfers think is if you grip the club what is perceived as strong that means you’re just going to roll the toe over. Absolutely not. It allows you to load the club, unload it around that pad of the left hand. I’m unloading the golf club. I’m not flipping. If I was flipping, I’d be turning the back of the left wrist down. So, you’ve got this sequence now that the golfer has got that allows him to load the club. There’s the energy and unload the golf club down at the bottom. That dynamic loft that you produce at strike is where your ball compression is coming from. On top of the fact that you’ve now got an angle of attack that will be able to survive. The more you strike down on a golf ball, if the faceto path value isn’t correct, you’re going to soon sacrifice it. Because the more I strike down, the face is still looking left, I can strike down even more, yet the face doesn’t want to point to the right. Trackman. Good old Trackman. Let’s give that one another go. Strike. Oh, there it is. It did get it. Just had a think about it. So, you can see at 8.8 eight down. The face was still looking left. But now I can start to feel like that’s the pinch. There’s the pinch. But it’s only my grip and the light hold that allows me to load the club and that swing moment of where the pad of the hand is looking to the floor and that forearm can externally rotate. So that golfer now has got longer back swing, more load in the down swing, and all of a sudden he knows how to unload a golf grip that is in the stronger side. Doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re going to hook the golf ball. So golf ball compression is a thing of beauty. It gives you a lot.
