COUNCILLORS have given the green light to change a Lichfield golf course into a nine-hole pitch and putt facility.
The proposed new configuration will be approximately half the size of the existing 18-hole course at Beacon Park, a report to Lichfield District Council planning committee meeting said.
Work to the site will include the removal of nine holes from the existing course, as well as remedial works and the installation of three new pathways.
The report said:
“Minor topographical works will be made where necessary for the design of each new hole and appropriate turfing.
“As part of the new layout, the recently permitted padel courts will be on the northern side of the site and the site to the south is currently under discussion, but there is potential for a nature reserve which is yet to be confirmed.
“The new nine-hole pitch and putt golf course represents an improvement over the existing facility, through improvement to the layout, and allows for an already permitted padel court, a potential nature reserve and improves the current underutilised golf course, which allows for a whole area improvement of the sports provision in Beacon Park.”
The proposals were described as a “positive improvement” at the planning meeting. Committee members voted to approve the application.
Cllr Hugh Ashton said:
“The Friends of Lichfield Historic Parks are very happy with this idea. They are especially happy with the idea the unused nine holes are going to become a nature reserve.”
