Donald Trump’s polling has been brutal for much of his second term, but there is one place that he keeps hitting home runs and that is with his base.
And, according to CNN data reporter Harry Enten, the president is making history there.
“He’s up like a rocket,” Enten proclaimed during his most recent segment on the network.
He then showed polling that showed 63% of Republicans “strongly approve” of the job Trump is doing now.
“Republicans love Donald Trump the way that Americans love Disney World,” Enten said.
“That is a huge base, and of course it is just part of a Republican base in which about 90% of them overall approve of him, including the somewhat approves as well,” he said.
Enten then showed how that data compares to other Republican presidents five months into a term across the past 37 years.

The closest to Trump was George W. Bush who had 59% of those polled say they strongly approved of the job he did five months in. And, in 2017, Trump had 53% of people say they strongly approved of the job he was doing five months into that term.
“He beats all the other Republicans on the board here, and I was looking back even since Reagan and get this, Donald Trump beat Ronald Reagan when it comes to the strong approved five months in and, of course, Reagan was coming off that high after an assassination attempt,” Enten said.
“Donald Trump is making history with the Republican base,” he added. “He is more loved by this Republican base than any Republican base loved any GOP president five months in. It is history making.”
Enten then discussed the value of Trump’s endorsement in GOP races.
“The bottom line is, if you are a Republican lawmaker you see this 63% and you say my goodness gracious, you don’t want to go against Donald Trump because the base is with Donald Trump,” he said. “And it’s not just polling. We actually have data that the Republican base with Donald Trump.
‘Bottom line is this, 95% of the time the Trump-endorsed challenger wins in GOP primaries,” he continued. “And even in times where Donald Trump endorses a challenger to an incumbent, 95 percent of the time the challenger wins. So, Donald Trump is a winner in Republican primaries. You go against Donald trump, to quote the movie ‘Good Burger,’ you go in the grinder.
“His endorsement is the key nugget in a GOP primary because he is so strongly with the GOP base.”
