sergio Garcia is officially heading back to the open championship without hitting a single shot in final qualifying The 45-year-old Spaniard opted not to take part in the grueling 36 hole qualifier scheduled for next week Instead banking on his LIIV golf results to earn him a place at Royal Portrait That gamble paid off Following a strong showing at LIIV Golf Dallas Garcia climbed to fourth in the league’s individual standings good enough to clinch his first open appearance since 2022 Back in February the RNA announced a key update The top performing LIIV golfer not already exempt after the Mario Golf Club event will be granted a spot in this year’s Open Championship The move marked a shift in qualification criteria to reflect the changing landscape of professional golf Mark Darbon chief executive of the RNA explained the decision The Open is a global championship for the best men’s golfers and each year we review our exemptions to ensure that we offer pathways into the championship based on results achieved on the leading professional tours We acknowledge that players competing in LIIV golf should also have the opportunity to secure places in the open through its individual season standings as well as existing pathways We are proud to offer a wide range of opportunities to qualify globally and look forward to seeing which golfers will emerge to take their place at Royal Portrait in July Garcia’s path wasn’t without drama Despite holding a strong position heading into LIV Dallas he struggled to maintain his form After an opening round of three overpar he followed up with a two over 74 leaving his open fate hanging in the balance But a final round 70 helped him lock in a T-25 finish just enough to stay ahead in the standings David Pig Garcia’s teammate at Fireballs GC and a fellow contender for the open spot fell just short allowing Garcia to claim the coveted exemption With his ticket to Royal Portric now punched Garcia joins a growing contingent of LIIV players set to compete in the final men’s major of 2025 In total 18 LIV golfers have qualified for the Open For Garcia this qualification may carry even greater significance With the RDER Cup looming in September at Beth Paige Black the veteran still has hopes of representing Europe for an 11th time While he’s not currently a lock for Captain Luke Donald squad earning a spot at the Open could be a crucial step in keeping those dreams alive
