How to Build a Backyard Golf Hole – Fun DIY Lawn Care Project

Today I set up a DIY backyard mini golf course by installing an easy backyard golf hole in my lawn. This isn’t a full backyard golf green or DIY putting green yet, but it’s the first step in my backyard golf setup. I show you exactly how I dug out the hole by hand, installed the cup insert, and made it part of my backyard golf course for some quick backyard golf practice and outdoor golf practice.

In this video, I play on all three golf holes I set up in the backyard and side yard. I even played two of them at night using glow golf balls and an LED light insert that fits right into the hole for awesome glow golf and night practice. all [Music] right welcome back to the yard dash little 
bit different today i picked up one of these mini flag stick threefoot basically like 
chipping whatever you want to call it mini golf uh it’s just a practice hole that you could 
put in your backyard so I was like “Okay this is cool.” Comes with a putting cup a flag and 
two-piece flag pole so I got one of these and um I figured it was just going to be one hole 
but they actually sent they sent two extra ones i don’t know why I ordered this myself like I’m 
not affiliated or anything like that but I’ve got two extra ones so maybe I’ll get some extra 
flags later uh but for now we’ll get all three cuz there’s another one of these in that box we’ll 
get all three of these put down in the backyard i chose out three spots i did pick up this light 
up thing that goes slides into the cup and it’s a uh it’s like a remote control one you know 
you can do the whole color changing thing and uh yeah pretty cool so I was like “Oh my son would 
love this at night.” And then I have some practice balls that I picked up and two of them I think two 
of them that I got they actually when you hit them they color change so I was like “Oh that’ll be 
perfect for this.” So got all this so what we’re going to do is we’re going to install these in the 
backyard and I’ll show you the spots right now and uh yeah I think I got some good spots and I’m 
going to use this to kind of chip i’m just going to be using like a wedge or a sand wedge 
or a pitching wedge was thinking that maybe what we can do is I can get some bent grass later and 
we’ll make like a collar of my grass we have now and maybe do bent grass around these or something 
like that we’ll figure it out um but that stuff seeds real well in my area for now i can put more 
perennial rye around the hole and I’ll show you how I’m going to do the hole and tomorrow’s video 
not today i’ll be overseeding doing an overseed in the backyard summer overseed with cool season 
grass i’ll show you how I do that and then I’ll also be adding in the rest of the sprinkler heads 
that I have um from my last video of those Hunter MP so look out for that video tomorrow for 
now we’re going to go install these i’ll show you where we’re going to be putting these in and 
yeah it’s a nice day i think it’s like in the 80 uh upper 80s° F nice day to golf this is actually 
going to be perfect for back there uh if I can get the grass right where we put these holes we’ll 
be able to do some putting too either way we’re going to be able to chip some practice balls and 
the balls that we’ll be using are just these like little plastic kind of PVC feeling ones just 
some regular little practice balls cuz uh yeah otherwise we’d be hitting them into the uh the 
green space on the other side of the fence also I will be adding a little bit of sand around the 
holes pretty easy you can go 4 in down I believe with these and then 4.25 in in diameter wide um so 
we’ll be just kind of making like a little square and setting it looking forward to this pretty cool 
right and uh let me know in the comments below if you uh if you’ve put one of these or installed 
one of these this company says King Top on it i just got them on Amazon so I’ll put the link 
for that in the description and maybe they’ll accidentally send you two of these who knows all 
right so my first spot I’m gonna put one of these is I’m thinking actually right maybe where this 
dead spot is right here i’ll be putting that right here i might bring it a little bit further out but 
for now we’ll hit it here it’s right next to this apple tree and this peach tree and I’ll be hitting 
from over here to there i got plenty of room here too i think that’s a good spot for that one and 
then the next one I’m going to put in between these two trees over here will be going down the 
side of the house for the for the third hole so first hole will be this then second right there 
and third down this way so let me show you yeah I think this is a good spot so we’ll go ahead and 
just get the flag pole thing out too and you can get all sorts of like flag poles for these things 
too on uh eBay and definitely check that out let’s see what else is in here heck maybe there’s 
another one no just a bunch of plastic but yeah we’ll be putting this one somewhere in between 
the middle of these two right here let’s get that thrown back in but just to give you an idea let’s 
see like right there we’ll bring it out just a bit so like right there oh and that uh that Hunter the 
rotator the uh MP uh thing works great especially in the wind i’ve had problems with sprinklers back 
here and it’s windy all the time here in Utah but when it gets super windy a lot of them just don’t 
work and that’s why I get a lot of dry spot but now that thing’s working and I noticed when it was 
windy everything else was blowing around cuz it’s more of a mist whereas that thing was working just 
fine so good in the wind all right just so you can see now right there is where that one will be 
and that’ll be kind of a tough one so that’ll be interesting it gives you plenty of room to hit 
too and here’s that first one and then this is an area where I fixed a sprinkler and it’s totally 
grown back over here which is nice um but this will be the perfect spot for this one into the 
ground right over here then just to give you an idea but you’re going down here so I think those 
are some good spots for those so I’m going to go ahead and dig the hole like I said it it’s 4 in 
down from ground level so we’ll start with this one plus it’s in the shade right now which 
is nice i’m thinking like right here [Music] heat [Applause] [Music] 
heat [Music] [Applause] heat [Music] [Music] heat [Music] all right well got all three of those done 
you could totally see the difference in my soil on that side over there where I’ve never 
put down amendments and stuff because that was a heck of a lot harder to dig in uh but having 
the little tiny hand shovel it definitely made it a little bit easier but what I’m going to do 
is uh in tomorrow’s video I’ll be overseating anyways so I’ve just put down like sand in 
areas where I think sand will be appropriate and then in areas where I didn’t really need 
it like over there the final hole that I put up yeah I didn’t even put sand cuz it’s already 
like dirt sand over there over here it was more clay by the fence but I think it looks good you 
can see it over there and I might get a 6ft one so I’m thinking for the poles that I order I’ll 
get two 6 ft ones and I’ll keep one small one and we’ll keep the small one over here and then 
I’ll do the the 6T ones on the other spot but hole right there complete first one then second 
hole over here i don’t know why I was going that way right now looking awesome perfect the 
grass here went all the way around great and then not as easy to get in but once I got 
it in good to go and all these are center flush and level and they’re down the exact recommended 
whatever i just made it even with the I cheated i cheated we’ll see what happens but I’m I’m 
pretty sure we’re good but tomorrow we’ll be overseating should look pretty awesome 
um I have not overseated the back here it is a summer overseating so it’s going to be a 
little interesting but I’ll kind of show you what I’ve done in the past and what’s worked and uh it 
should be as good as the front once it’s complete i’m glad I got those in cuz I wanted to get those 
in before I did the over seating cuz I don’t want to do a bunch of damage um but yeah I think it’s 
looking awesome this backyard is ready to cut almost again and uh it’s pretty high so looking 
really nice the light’s kind of weird right now time of day um but yeah flag looks awesome over 
there so what I’m gonna do is I’m gonna get out my wedge and I’m gonna chip some shots at that 
one and then we’ll move the flag and I’ll chip some shots at that one move the flag again and 
then chip some shots at the final one and then of course I’ll come out here at night and do all 
of them with the light let me go ahead and get my wedge take some shots see what we can do so 
let’s give this a quick little Awesome [Music] so now now we should be golden oh so close i’ll have to get this one dialed in well on to the next one so close yeah this is not easy but I can 
see how practicing this will really up your short game for sure big time makes 
you swing lighter too cuz of these balls let’s try this one one more time i like 
this hole this is my favorite hole so far oh so close all right so nothing so far almost 
but nothing so far so we’re going to take this uh flag pole to the last and final hole and so 
far I think that one’s my favorite one um it’s got some nice shade over there right now too so 
that helps yeah I like that one a lot let’s see what we’re doing on this one my son’s watching 
me out the window oh man he’s going to love this thing at night all right so looking good over 
here we’ll get the camera down right here i think that’ll be a good spot see what we can do 
the grass is a lot shorter here it seems like close we got this oh you know I almost feel like if we did have the bent grass 
that would definitely help it oh so close so close just got to get out here and 
practice believe it or not it’s not getting dark here till about 10:00 at night almost it’s kind of 
crazy but I’ll see you tonight we’re just going to turn that on real quick comes on now you can see 
the hole all right we’re going to get this down we’re going to chip some balls that’s cool i got 
my dog out here too he’s probably freaking out all right here we go oh man we’re almost there 
let’s see if we can get it re Oh have to putt it in all right let’s go take this thing and go uh 
let’s go try the other side here i can’t really see much on this side this thing works really good 
as a flashlight though that’s for sure wow it like lights up the whole backyard all right so we’re 
going to play this hole now let’s see if this one works better so far so good but yeah I mean 
this thing it really lights it up great like you can see you can see this thing from very very 
far away and uh if a ball goes in you can tell very well too that one was definitely closer i 
don’t know if you can see those good but let’s see if we can hit it from over here here we go 
almost there all right nice well we’ll have to shave the grass down so we can at least putt it 
but let’s take another shot from back over here let’s get a different angle at least you can see 
the hole see if we can get this one i even cut the grass too it seems harder it’s much harder at 
night oh man oh let’s try one more time here we go oh so close let’s see if we can get it from this 
side oh totally got it i’m surprised I got that i can’t even I can’t believe I just got that all 
right let’s take a shot from over here here we go almost got it i’m going to end it you 
probably can’t see me very well but hope you uh learned about how to install these 
things and uh I’ll see you tomorrow we’re going to do that over seed tomorrow 
i’ll cut this a little bit shorter before we do it maybe i’ll see you tomorrow
