Dan Rapaport breaks down what’s brewing at Oakmont on moving day, presented by Revenue Brew.
guys I think we’re in for a changing of the guard I’m not sure yet but I’m almost ready to make the declaration that Sam Burns 36 hole leader at the United States Open has unseated Denny McCarthy for the very prestigious title of best putter on the planet This is what’s brewing at Oakmont presented by Revenue Brew a new newsletter from the folks behind Morning Brew Now Denny McCarthy has held this mantle for the last couple years really since Cameron Smith was in the conversation and he’s held it very well But what I’ve seen recently from Sam Burns we got to look at the numbers Here are each player’s strokes gain putting ranks on the PGA Tour for the last five years And as you can see Denny’s had the advantage in recent years But something’s flipped this year Sam Burns is number one on tour Burns picked up 3.24 shots on the field on Friday and route to a sensational 5 under 65 the third best US Open round ever at Oakmont
I try to keep it very simple I think you know if you look at putting the ball’s rolling on the ground there’s a lot of imperfections on grass Um there’s a lot of different lines a ball can go in depending on the speed And so I think if you try to be too perfect with putting it it can drive you crazy
You don’t want to be relying solely on your putter going into the weekend of a major championship because as conventional wisdom goes ball striking carries over better from round to round than a hot putter It’s more sustainable Unless of course you’re Sam Burns or Denny McCarthy Still haven’t made it official yet

You know what's crazy, both of these guys missed what should have been routine putts (for the best putters on tour) to lose in a playoff to Ryan Fox in different events.
Denny was never the best putter on earth
This is a wild take
Golf needs a puttingninja
Ever heard of Cam Smith?
