learn how to hit wedge shots in this live golf tutorial with PJ coach James E so first thing is the setup so a lot of people get confused about how they set up to the wedge shot then compared to your normal iron swing so let me see your setup okay so this is a sand wedge right uh this is 58° so more close to lob WT right but between lob wtch and the sandwich this is how I set up I try to keep my weight on my left foot and feel like I’m just hitting with my left foot oh okay that’s good first thing is you got to open up your stance don’t Square your shoulder to the Target you got to open up the open up your St and also legs close together and then just I want around 3 in away from each other your feet good and then putting 80% of your weight on your left side mm Open up The Stance good and then another last thing is grab the bottom of the club face a club uh grip and ball position in the middle of your feet good that’s pretty much it okay so setup is the most important thing right if you set up in a bad position it’s hard to chip okay so let me show that one more time that was the front view then this is the side view not this Open up The Stance ball position in the middle and then grab it short and 80% of your weight on the left side okay so setup is the easiest part today we’ll be working on some longer wet shot not 10 20 30 40 you’re starting from 40 yards to 80 yard cuz that’s the harder shot for most of most of diic goer they struggle with the especially like 60 80 it’s kind of like in the middle zone for uh longer wet shot we want to do the same setup no difference and we’re just going to get your legs just touch wider okay so we’re starting from the 40 yards so 40 yard is with the Lop wch or sand wed usually goes up to the half swing up here half is 9:00 and 12:00 right so when you’re getting into that position make sure no weight transfer to to lead side to the right side okay keep your weight pressure 80% on the left side the whole time see I’m not leaning this way just keep it there I want you to almost feel like you lifting your right foot and then okay another important thing is no hip rotation there’s going to be zero hip rotation so no hip rotation see I’m just lifting my arm this way so did you notice anything different about my swing plane when I do this it’s a little bit more forwards yes out the my club head is not behind my ears it’s in front or in the side right right it’s not here so I’m not shallowing my club like a normal iron mhm like like this my club is way behind me right so open up the stance weight pressure here no hip turn left here you got to feel like you’re almost going outside this way and swing inside because you’re you set up with your open stance right that’s where your club path is going to be so outside inside mhm so outside and inside so 40 yard yeah 39.6 some people are questioning about if you’re hitting outside in does your balls going to go left side yes it will but that’s why we actually on the setup we open up the club face by like 2 to 5 de depends on how much you’re swinging outside in mhm so if your Club get your Club faces be square and then go outside in like this you have your balls going to go a little bit left so we don’t want your balls to go left so we open up the club face by two to three okay so let’s give it a try good so you naturally open the club face right so it’s it’s totally fine then you don’t have to open it more and then open up your stance good back swing back swing yep just the back swing no it’s the club is behind you ah so forward yes bring my arms up yep yeah and then no hip turn let go back to your setup again no hip turn oh you got to go closer to the ball okay no hip turn back swing good much better and then we’re swinging this way more towards inside all right okay ready set the ball I lost balance 40 yards so that’s that’s not good CU your weight was on your right side after you hit the ball you have to keep all your weight on the left side mhm so let’s try that one so that’s called scooping that’s that’s called scooping that’s most common issue for lot golfer they try to scoop the ball but keep your weight on the left side okay good that’s better mhm so reason why I want you to not shallow the club so you can actually hit down on the ball more in a steeper angle right so with the longer iron driver I wanted you to shallow right but shorter the club is we have to go more steeper angle so we can create more Back Spin right yeah and then and also another main reason why I don’t want to uh shallow the club more you shallow you’re going to hit the hle of the club mhm so you’re going to hit you’re going to shank a lot of balls a lot of people shank their the wet shot they don’t know the reason why but it’s mostly reason is they shallow the club and they swing inside out with their wet shot so even for me if I swing inside out with my wedge look where I’m hitting I literally hit just like right up there do your normal setup don’t shallow open up the club face a little here here mhm yeah okay so that’s the main reason why you don’t want to shallow right yeah so one more tip is when you’re hitting a longer wet shot mhm is when you’re at the top of the back swing right here we don’t do in uh too much hip turn right but I still want you to start with your lower body on the down swing mhm and I want you to feel like your belly button is facing the target before the impact like this okay so I don’t want your arms to go take over before your hip so we call this hinge and hold Technique we hinge our wrists and then we hold this angle and we turn our body this way mm so it look like I’m still holding onto this angle on the down swing right right here and then swing like this let’s get help you square up the club face better and it’s going to give you more consistency like this you see my you notice my head and my body was moving together like this right so I was actually holding on to this angle mhm this is how I increase my distance with my wetes so I don’t change too much on my setup position I do it by kind of like a clock system so with 40 yards I do a same setup same back swing and then L to L stopping at L that’s my 40 yards so 50 yard is just this same back swing impact and then I don’t stop at L I go high follow through so almost like 11:00 MH and when I go 50 yards only thing that I change is grab the club long so instead of grabbing it short all the way down here I grab it longer mhm and then same size up and then do 9:00 to 1:00 mhm that’s my 60 yards and 70 and 80 is do a long grip a normal grip don’t grab a short and I get my legs to be just touch wider and then I do a little bit more back swing so now my arm is at 10:00 so around 3 uh 3/4 swing 3/4 back swing right okay but still no hip turn no hip turn legs becomes wider and then instead of stopping at 9 we go 10:00 and then we stop at 11: okay a 70 and 80 is same back swing a same setup same back swing but all the way to finish mhm that’s how I do a control okay so there’s a lot of different way you can do it by changing the club too but this is how I do it so yeah let’s see if you can do that too okay okay yeah that’s good did you feel like your belly button was doing the swing though just now a little bit yeah little bit okay yeah still keeping it kind of armsy cuz I’m trying to focus on a contact point this you need a lot of practice for this it’s not going to get fixed right away yeah okay so that was a 40ish shot mhm now just a little bit harder for my 50 yeah oh good littleit harder okay not bad it’s a little bit harder okay good so I like that you’re not leaning back and trying to scoop the ball you’re putting the weight pressure on the left side the whole time yeah okay let’s try again just a little bit harder now no just same doing the same just a little higher follow through okay okay so you’re ball is just climbing up your Club head uhhuh so there’s no compression oh so I need to compress it a little bit yeah so you need to close the face a little bit just a little okay that’s better good so that was 52 58 so that one your ball didn’t climb up the club base you compressed it a little bit okay so let’s do 60 yards okay and do I need to change anything for 60 or just more clock no 60 is same but grabbing it longer okay and legs becomes Just a Touch wider good yep that should be around 60 perfect yeah 61 good now 80 so because the club is getting longer and your leg is w a little bit wider give you a little bit more back swing and a little bit more speed right good so 70 do remember 70 70 I’m just I’m just teaching you my way of getting a 70 what am I doing for 70 so 70 is the same grip same setup uh now we’re doing a 3/4 swing okay 3/4 back swing so 3/4 here that’s L mhm right there okay and then same follow through uh 1:00 follow through okay that’s better so I to that a little bit uh uh yeah no it’s actually not a top it’s opposite of top your ball had the top of the club head your club was climbing up the ball and you’re hitting slightly behind the ball so compress it a little bit more yes and you got to hit the ball first most of your shot you’re hitting behind the ball let’s see yeah that was a little bit better still climing I can feel it sliding off my yeah right you don’t feel that compression right so how do I compress it I have to just hit into the ball mark try not to scoop it your right wrist is doing I’m using too much wrist right now for sure so remember L uh back swing M your belly button basing the target hold the angle and rotate like this okay good that’s a compression good so you’re that was exactly 70r 71 so lot people think that if you that that’s kind of feel like a topping a little bit right yeah it feels topping it was it was a really good contact and your ball went slightly low than what you did before before it went climb up the club face right but because you hit down on it with the good compression you’re you’re going to have a lot of accident so when when that ball hits the ground hits the green it’s going to stop right away what happened before was you were either scooping your wrist M or leaning back this way so you’re on the mat you can get away with it because it your clip doesn’t get stuck but if you do that at the golf course it go under yeah I mean your clip’s going to get stuck okay stuck onto the ground you might hit that like 10 yards okay so depends on how steep you’re coming down and how how much behind you’re hitting yeah so you always want to hit the ball first and then hit the ground after last few shots you were just hitting it way behind the ball right there so that’s why you’re losing around 10 to 20 yards here but at the golf course it’ll be 20 30 right so last one is 80 yards so full same setup same back swing 3/4 back swing but finish all the way to finish but when you’re hitting your full swing or three4 swing with the wet shot we don’t want 100% power as soon as you go 100% power you’re going to lose consistency you’re not going to hit in the center so always have that soft swing soft swing means lead with your belly button back swing like this not like a iron swing m one two yeah see it didn’t look like I was swinging hard right so that was 78 yards so let’s give it a try we’re adding Power by rotating your torso and rotating your belly button so we’re doing a 3/4 swing and full finish okay that climbed up the face so compression yeah you can if as you can see from there you’re hitting it around this much behind the wall okay so let’s forward either let add more weight transfer we’re not doing any weight transfer at all so keep it on the left mhm more left good left yep B no no your whole body okay good that’s the compression it’s not going 80 yet yeah so you’re not swinging hard though okay so you’re swinging yeah that was that was L okay I want to see more 3/4 Wing that’s a good box swing do your CL faces keep climbing up the CL face yeah it start to compress yeah for me cuz I keep thinking when my legs are together I’m just scooping let me let me show you one more easy tip for this so we’re going to do exact same swing so you’re losing 20 yards right yeah now we’re going to 52° mhm so this is almost two club uh longer than 58° longer means uh Loft wise yeah so do the same swing this is going to be you’re going to be hitting same 80 yards with us good so how easy was that one right yeah well all you did was just change the CL this feels like I was cheating cheat wa why you keep saying cheating there’s no cheating you off well you know from a lot of amateurs and when they start playing a lot of sports they want to do it perfectly well that’s why they suck for you you struggle with 70 to 80 yards some people might might not they they might be more comfortable with 70 to 80 RS so for you it’s harder so all you have to do is just change there’s no absolutely no difference okay I’ll change your Club yeah well try try one more time okay perfect how easy is this 80 so when this is so this is what you have to do when you’re at the golf course when you’re at 60 yard do the same swing but with this when you’re at 70 to 80 or 80 to 85 use that so yeah that’s the that’s pretty much it for the uh wedge so okay to finish this part off let’s hit three distances and see if we can hit more accurately 40 60 80 40 60 80 yeah okay we each get one attempt M if you hit a bad shot we’re keeping it in the video okay sure okay I start yeah oh great shot so far yeah okay 52 well that’s far better than me okay next one is 60 is it the the 60 oh where’s the pressure I hit that I hit that little fat uhhuh oh oh nice okay all right last last one 80 on this club right we have to hit this club oh it doesn’t matter you can use whatever you like sure oh that was a good one oh over okay what is this that’s yeah a okay I can feel that climbing yeah right all right you wi the this time the next time I win I am PGA if you guys want to help support this channel make sure like comment subscribe and check out this video

Thanks, great tutorial
Awesome video! This truly clarified why my wedge shots lacked consistency. The advice was straightforward and simple to implement. I've looked at other channels, but this one breaks things down in a way that really resonates. Appreciate the excellent content!
👍❤️
James 잘 생겼네요
한글 번역 자막으로 보고있어요.
Please can you show how to hit the hybrid and the woods? I can hit the irons pretty good but can’t seem to do the longer clubs.
I’m glad I have discovered your channel. Great videos. From Johannesburg
Excellent content and simply explained. Great video. Thanks.
I agree with Trevino… if you can touch the club head on you pitch shot, you a ishty wedge player
This may explain why as a lefty most of my wedge shots tend to go right of pin/green. I need to start outside.
Excellent instruction. Golfing Tuesday and will work on your suggestions with respect y to 40-80 yard shots !
I'm so happy I have came across this channel. I broke 90 (88 could've been lower but the course conditions were horrible. I mean losing a ball in the fairway because of weeds horrible lol) for the first time today using James instructions. He's answered so many of my questions across multiple lessons. Thanks man!
Awesome lesson. I can watch you all day man..
You have great content with concise instructions, but please stop the 90% on every title.
So… club head in set up is slightly open. Should it be perpendicular to the target line?
I think this is one of the best golf coachs I have seen on YouTube, good teaching level, easy to understand, thanks a lot!
This is going to sound weird… But James' voice and delivery is somewhat calm and soothing to my ear. It makes me feel like it's easier to absorb the instructions and make sense of it all. That's how I want to feel on the golf course, calm and relaxed as opposed to tense and stressed.
Great content! Thanks!! ⛳️
