[Music] swear jar in here Hi I’m Ian Poulter and this is scorecard confessional I don’t know how much detail or time you’ve got but this was a roller coaster Uh teed off on 16th hole today flailed three-wood way right Um decided at that point to just chip it back in play I was kind of behind the trees Didn’t really have much of a shot Chipped it back into play but I hit the tree Stayed in the rough It left me 195 yards still to the pin for my third shot which I hit nine iron from the right rough It came up um kind of just on the fringe of the green had this knuckle to go over and uh I couldn’t put it I had to chip it because I had sprinklers in the way and uh managed to chip it down there to tap it in for a bogey So uh not what I wanted to see after a pretty decent range session Uh but that was uh that was 16 17 par five Uh it’s a tricky one for me It’s borderline whether I can reach in two flailed my T-OT again to the right with driver uh in the right hand rough The only thing I could do was hit seven iron out the rough to try and get it down there as far as I possibly can It left me 189 yards to the pin Wind was in off the right hand side Pins 10 on three from the right I hit six iron to about 40 feet Um pin I left Pretty decent shot Um bearing in mind you know anything coming up short right is uh is in a bit of trouble Um from there 45 ft part downhill Uh very quick putt downhill down grain breaking right to left at the end Rolled it down there tapped it in for a par 18th hole Um one of the trickiest T- shots on the golf course to be honest Uh and one of the longest par fours we’ll ever play 528 yards Flared my T-shot yet again to the right And at this point I am best you know hitting hitting three T- shots to the right Uh he’s really really really frustrating I had to move a couple of speakers and a generator and a load of cables down the right hand side uh to play my second shot hit fivewood from the right hand rough I actually had 252 yards to the pin Uh wind was off the left so didn’t really come out the rough very well Left me left me about uh 59 yards to the pin for my third shot Hit a poor third shot I’m trying to just fly it over the over the ridge which was uh 21 21 yards on the green which would have kind of fed down grain from left to right to the hole but again I pitched it kind of three yards short of where I needed to to land it Uh missed that part So I’ve started 555 two over par for the first first three holes And um at that point kind of my head spinning a bit First hole of the day Um finally hit my first fairway So um that was quite nice Hit hit a nice wedge from 139 yards Pin was uh 10 on eight left Trying to land this you know about 142 Trying to land it just right at the pin see if I can um have that ball spin down to the hole Hit decent shot to about I’m going to say sort of 12 15 ft Hit a nice putt but um just missed Tapped in for a par onto hole two Flared my T-shot to the right again As you can tell there’s a theme in this uh which was getting a little frustrating at this point It’s a par five now Um not a great line in the right hand raff Had to hit eight iron just to kind of get it back in play on the fairway just to leave myself a yardage for my third shot I had 135 yards to a a pin that was four on six from the right Hit gap wedge Pulled it a little bit Uh tried to hit a gap wedge you know pretty hard And by doing that I just just closed the face down a touch hit it to about 25 feet and uh hit a really nice putt there which I thought was actually going to go in but kind of just shaves the right edge of the hole as it was going past Tap it in Uh so I made par So uh two pars in a row Now tricky yardage on the next third hole Par three was playing 205 yards to the pin 200 yards to carry kind of the front knuckle of the green Hit a lovely shot just right at the pin and it kind of gets to the top of the ridge and comes all the way off the green about five yards leaving me a tricky chip shot Uh hit pretty decent chip to about 4 feet and um just left of the hole left me a little left to right putt which uh I managed to roll in So three pars in a row Come on flying at that point Um next hole Uh tricky you know tricky decision you know do we hit do we iron off the tea Keeping it well short of the the fairway bunkers Chose to hit fivewood Kind of flattened it out Hit kind of like a little knuckle fivewood which actually went up there a very long way Left me 159 to the pin Um so just tried to smooth a nine in there I hit a lovely shot and I think to be honest it actually lands I think on the second bounce catches part of the right edge of the hole and kind of kicks it out and goes to about 20 ft left of the hole which was a bit bit frustrating after hitting such a good shot Hit a nice putt but just missed Tap it in Four pars in a row Now the fun begins I’m not sure you call it fun Um hit driver pulled it kind of 10 yards left Um
obviously I’ve had a bit of a theme flaring driver to the right You can’t flare driver right on that hole It was just a big hazard down the right hand side So you know made sure I released it and uh hit it in the left hand rough Not a very nice lie at all just tried to literally land it five yards short of the green try and get it to chase on the green and um come out snagged Club face closed down went left It’s probably eight yards left to the green and eight yards left to the green was a bush So get down there realizing I’m going to have to take a penalty drop Took a penalty drop Kind of bounces almost forward into a bit of a smelly lie Um now I’ve left myself a tricky chip shot Doesn’t come out Comes out semi- dead Fluffed it Now I’ve got another tricky chip shot Uh chip it on Pass the hole Missed my putt Seven on the scorecard Um so not the best of starts being two over through the first three four pars after that and now make seven So at that point I’m I’m uh I’m running rather hot under the color at that point Um onto the sixth hole Hit a decent five up the left hand side We walk off the tea box and the referee comes up to us and tells us now we’re a hole and a half behind which when you’ve just made seven um it’s probably not really what you want to hear So um that was probably a little hot under the collar and uh didn’t take that too nicely Uh group behind were miles behind and this golf course is is brutally tough So anyway he left me 93 yards to the pin pin was uh back right Hit a decent lob wedge in there to about kind of eight feet Left myself a little right to left putt and um hit a nice putt Rolled it in So kind of immediate bounce back there which was really nice to to do that to get a birdie back but you know I’m uh I was five over one birdie back four over moving on to the seventh Uh big dog leg par five trying to drive it over the trees pulled my driver a little bit but it stayed on the fairway But the problem with that is uh you can’t really see any of the pin You got a big tree that’s kind of down in the hazard Um and I’ve got 200 52 258 yards to the pin Pins tucked way left Um into the wind Just tried to hit like a a smooth draw um trying to get it to pitch into the bank and uh feed down somewhere in the middle of the green which I did that Hit a really nice shot Left myself I don’t know 45 ft 50 ft Hit a nice kind of big snaky right to left putt which uh looked good all the way to be honest Hit a nice putt Um run out I think dropped in uh the right edge of the hole So my triple bogey on uh five was just eradicated with a birdie eagle So um as off as I was on five I guess you could say I was I was a little more um happy with my play walking off uh walking off the seventh But you know at that point it’s just really it’s really frustrating because um you’ve just frittered away so many shots The golf course is playing brutally tough Um and I need to I need to get back in there So par three eighth hole play 159 Wind was in slightly from the left hand side Tried to fly a low eight iron in there trying to land it just right at the pin Pushed it a fraction right Um left myself about 20 25 feet The first uh kind of 8 ft of the putt was going to be going through fringe grass Come out pretty quick Quicker than I thought it was going to and rolled it about five five feet past Knocked that in for par On to the ninth Um wind’s off the left and uh tricky fairway to hit for me That is um just overcut it slightly Comes up in the rough leaves myself 162 yards from the right rough and um bad lie Uh no good I could only hit it 110 yards from that from that point to kind of get it just over the the bunkers on the fairway And uh I’m pretty again at that point Um and I’m probably being a bit overaggressive Front left pin location You landing it on a down slope It’s downgrain It’s almost impossible to stop it but go straight straight over the green Uh leave myself no shot Um have to now play a really really really good chip shot from there Um landed it probably 2 feet short of where I needed to land it in the UPS slope and it comes back down the slope leaving myself in just the same position Uh no good um this point staring triple in the face yet again So I hit a chip shot on it goes uh hit a decent chip goes on to 20 ft kind of past the pin down into kind of a a swale area now really hot under the collar I hit decent putt managed to knock it in So um you know in a space of in a space of five holes I’ve had a double a triple a birdie and an eagle So you know um head head spinning you know I I get back the triple uh on five on six and seven and then I go and throw it all back again on nine Um so I got I got to dig deep at this point I don’t really want to um let this ram get get away from me yet again So uh on to hole 10 Forced driver down there Tried to get down there as far as I could Try and be super aggressive Hit a decent drive Left myself 131 yards to the pin Pin’s uh back left corner Hit a decent gap wedge in there Slightly downwind Uh hit a decent shot to about 15 17 feet just passed pin high right Left myself a good look uh with a right to left putt Rolled it in Made birdie Got one of those two drop shots back from nine Uh onto the 11th front right pin location 175 yards to the pin and uh winds off the right It’s down off the right So really tricky pin to try and get tight to Hit a really lovely shot in there to about 10 ft Uh just behind the hole just to the left Left myself a super quick putt which was downgrain uh downhill Just missed that That would have been really nice to have recovered the uh you know both those drop shots from nine on 11 But anyway mapar tapped it in onto 12th hole Another tricky T- shot considering my options on that tee Uh decided to kind of leave it back a bit further Just tried to put 3-wood in play Couldn’t afford to you know leap driver slightly right on there because you’re in you’re in a big problem So a lovely 3wood down the fairway Left myself 196 to the pin Hit a really nice sixiron which come up uh just short the pin and just on the fringe So I had about 17 ft Um got my line right but he just come up a touch shot Tapped it in for a par Um par five must hit fairway to have any chance of having a go at this green in two So I hit a nice drive Um just kind of smoothed it out there Just tried to put it in play because anything on that fairway you’re going to be having a go for the green in two Uh 3-wood at that point from 292 yards Um it’s quite funny I actually get it right on right on the front edge of the green Uh and the pin’s 32 on four from the right So I’ve left myself like a 96 ft putt Um up over the ridge downhill left to right Um hit a decent putt was obviously fully well aware if I hit it 15 feet past this pin it was going to go off the green and go about 60 feet past probably into the into color rough So I ended up coming up about 10 ft short um rolled a nice little 10footer in there to uh to recover those two uh drop shots on nine which was nice onto the par three 14th uh pulled pitching wedge Poor shot to be honest It was actually a really good number Had 147 to the pin Winds off the left Um it was actually the perfect club perfect number perfect wind to kind of have it landing just left of the pin try and feed it down to the hole And I pulled it Now I’ve left myself brutally uh difficult putt that’s got to run through 25 ft of fringe grass to the top of the ridge and then feed down to the hole So I hit a nice putt Left myself about six feet uh for par Managed to roll that in which was good Onto my last hole of the day Another tricky T- shot Hit a really nice drive left myself 154 yards to the pin Wind is wind is in from the right hand side Pin was eight on six right So it’s kind of front right just over the knuckle Um now in between clubs so it would have been a big draw nine to be able to get it to the pin But I chose to hit a kind of like a soft cut hold up a time which I hit a really nice shot Probably the nicest shot of the day to be honest to about uh five six feet just past the pin Super slippery putt from that point back down the green down grain downwind Uh tapped it in and recovered the day So one over par I know it’s line top 20 but um you know overall feeling on the day was after making triple I wasn’t be going to be coming in this room to tell you about my round of golf because I was like that Um after double I wasn’t going to be coming in this room either So uh the good news is I recovered my round of golf with the last six holes of the day Um but I’m I’m genuinely disappointed Making triple from 99 yards out from the green is is is inexcusable Overaggressive A third shot on nine you know with a simple acceptance of you know give yourself 25 ft for par If you make it great If you miss it it’s fine You’re going to move on So I’ve kind of thrown shots away today um which is really annoying So look onwards for the weekend I think I can see that I’m actually doing enough good stuff making enough birdies I’m giving myself chances I just need to put it in the fairway because this golf course is savage from when you miss uh miss fairways And you’ll see that with a lot of the scores Um there’ll be plenty of bogeies doubles and triples And that is not what I need this weekend So need a low round

Great insight. I’m impressed by Poulter’s honesty. The average amateur golfer can relate more than if it was a golfer who’d just shot 65. 👏👏👏
Really enjoy these vids. Great insight into the player's mindset.
Great feature… From a guy you might expect to be throwing clubs this is impressive. Thanks Ian!
Aww go on Poults fighting back! Well done. And awesome new series to add to the youtube channel! So creative!
Poults is so good listen to
This is what us golf fans want to see. Really good insights into strategy, shot making and mental approach. Massive respect to Poults for his honesty
GR8 recovery Ian. I watched Rick Sheils play this course" Can I Break 80 at a Brutal Course – With a Course Management Expert! He had 2 double bogeys back to back on the 9th and 10th. He had a 79.
Love this -great getting an insight into Ian mind and have him talking openly about his round and what went right and wrong
Loved this. Kudos to Poults and LIV for the insight
