Traditional golfers play long irons, game improvement players play hybrids, and elite professionals play 7 woods??

It’s time to get to the bottom of the debate and find out once and for all, which is the best option for your everyday golfer like me.

Enjoy,
Jon

a week ago I posted a question on my socials if you could only game one of these three clubs well then which one would stay in your bag over 500 of you answered based on your feedback a conclusive 42% of YouTubers said that they would go with this one the four hybrid although 44% of Instagrammers said that they would keep the four iron in the bag personally I’ve never been that much of a hybrid player and interestingly no one was picking the sevenwood even though there’s a ton of tour players now using this club especially around major venues but ultimately what am I looking to do well I’m looking to compare the 4i and the hybrid the 7wood in the hands of a pretty average golfer like myself with very normal swing speed to see how they stack up against each other at the top end of the bag and by the end of the video work out which one would I bench bin and buy let’s start the test here on the 11th at Colderwood so it’s early it’s only 4ยฐ it’s cold but it should be a good hole to try this one out you’ll see when I throw it up the images but there’s a big pond to carry it’s a par three we’ve lasered it and used the shot scope watch and it’s 184 to the front of the green 195 to the middle and 204 to the back of the green so it should sit there quite nicely between the four iron the hybrid and the sevenwood but it’s going to be interesting the ball flight how they land how easy they are to hit at this time in the morning i think my confidence is going to be higher with the woods but hey that’s what we’re here to find out okay so we’re going to start the day with the four iron see if we can put a good swing on it and get it onto this par three next up we’re going to go with the hybrid see if we can follow the iron get it down there towards the green again we’re looking at things like the forgiveness we’re looking at the height on this type of shot and on the camera [Music] third shot we’ll go the sevenwood [Music] so we get down to the green and this shot here is the four iron that we hit first so it’s carried the water nicely enough and it’s literally just off the front edge of the green and here we’ve got our sevenwood and our four hybrids so again they’ve flown a little bit further in the air they were definitely higher ball flights and yes they’ve found the sand on the side of the green but perfectly pin high and well to be honest probably a little bit closer than the four iron but there were the shots for me I wanted to do this test now because I’m about five five and a half weeks past fracturing my rib playing football or soccer depending on where you are so I’m back to swinging painfree but I don’t feel like there’s a ton of power in my swing and so I thought that’s a good time to start to look at these other clubs like your hybrids and your sevenwoods to see if they can make the game a little bit easier than the four eye and the three iron do for you as well as being out here at Colderwood seeing what they do on the course I’ve been into Sydney Golf Tech i’ve hit a lot of golf balls on the Trackman with all three clubs to see what the data looks like and I’ll pop that up for you because I think it’s pretty interesting first of all the noticeable thing is the height much like what you’d expect the 4 iron comes out way lower 81 ft as a peak height versus 108 ft with the hybrid and 119 ft with the 7wood so the 7wood is really soaring it pops up and it’s going up there it sees the same in the descent angle which is why it’s become a popular club at places like Augusta where you want the ball to land softly and stop quickly it had a descent angle of 49ยฐ versus 47 on the hybrid and only 40 on the 4 iron equally if you’re going to go through and look at some of the speed like I said not feeling like there’s a ton of speed at the moment but it was the same on the iron as it was the hybrid both with 87 mph club head speed versus 93 on the 7wood that little bit longer shaft probably helps get that club head speed up there and it translates into ball speed to 131 ball speed on the 7wood versus 122 and 125 on the iron and the hybrid carry 4 iron’s definitely the shortest in terms of the carry it is it’s going to come in low and it’s going to run so if you’re looking at a dry fairway windy conditions probably there the times when you’re going to think it’s not too important if you’re out here on softer courses or you’re at one of those sort of major venues with fast greens maybe that’s when you do start to look towards the hybrid and the sevenwood the 7wood for me carried 198 yds it was 191 with the hybrid total very similar between the four iron and the hybrid using Trackman and its calculations to work out the run that was 203 and 204 7wood was a little bit longer at 209 so all very interesting numbers i can start to see why people have been putting the hybrids into the bag i personally hadn’t until now but I can see why they would do it you’d say it’s a little bit more forgiving than a four iron a little bit easier to hit it’s going to go a bit higher carry a bit further lot of sense to that i am starting to see where the sevenwoods come back into play though that very high shot that’s going to land very soft and again forgiving that’s the importance though of getting them out onto the golf course test them from the fairway test them from the tea fairway bunkers carrying it over water all of those type of things to see what it’s actually like when you can see the golf course when you’ve got different conditions and then make your mind up from there so looking at different shots that come up on the golf course and the 12th green is all the way over these trees so it’s not an easy one and we’re going to be in the light rough it’s 205 to the center of the green 184 to get to the front of it there’s a few slopes in play primarily though from this type of lie you’re going to be wanting to see how close you can get it to the green with a four iron I think it’s going to be tricky but we’ll see how we go what sort of shots we have to hit starting with the hybrid the strike was nice very high came out easily he’s going to have missed the green to the right but all in all it was a pretty easy shot second shot we’ll play from here is going to be the sevenwood i would definitely be expecting this is where it comes into its own so again easily able to go straight at the green not worried about the trees at all just wanting to put a good strike on it again it’s popped it up high it’s come out nicely no concerns we’ve taken a drop with the four iron and this is the one where you’re going to start to wonder whether it finds it a little bit harder to pick the ball out of the rough i’ve managed to miss the tree but I have kind of had to cut it a little bit left to right to avoid it so interestingly enough on those shots they’ve all finished in a fairly similar position and you’ll be able to see the green just up behind me so they finished to the side of the green so not the end of the world considering it was a tricky shot we’ll give ourselves a beautiful fairway shot this time so it’s really nicely framed on this hole into the mountains we’ve got 200 to the center of the green which is the sort of distance that I’m giving myself on these clubs we’re going to have great lies and we’ll see what we can do okay first up we’ll go with the seven wood straight at the pin so going to be happy with that one next we’re going to go with the hybrid again super low but at it now we’ll go with the four iron the club I’m most familiar with see what we can do and that was just a bad swing but it’s the block right it’s the cut it came off the bottom just like the other two only that’s the one that I can feel in my fingers so the four iron that we hit was one of those classic early mornings it left your fingers stinging cuz it’s so cold it’s flicked to one of the trees and it’s just at the front of the green it’s not in a great spot but the sevenwood well that managed to pitch here and again not a great strike came out quite low but it’s pitched very close to the flag and although the green’s running away here it’s actually stopped here just on the fringe so in really good position equally our hybrid came out low it was just like the four iron where I’ve caught it off the bottom of the club but perhaps being that bit more forgiving it’s found its way up the center onto the middle of the green and would actually leave you with a really nice birdie putt so although we’re in a great position and you’d like to flush them every time as amateurs and regular golfers we don’t and maybe that’s what I’m seeing there in the sevenwood or the hybrid that they’ve saved me a lot compared to where the four iron is so we finished up here at Cerwood i’ve hit lots of different shots on the golf course we’ve tried the first thing in the morning when it’s really cold hit it over water hit it from fairways hit it out of the roof um lots of different types of shots i’ve also done the data on the Trackman at Sydney Golf Tech to really try and get a feel for what’s going on with these golf clubs and it’s an interesting one i can certainly see why people are moving away from the four iron and going towards the hybrid to me they’re very similar clubs in what they do but the hybrid is just that little bit more forgiving it’s going to get that ball a little bit higher for you in the air without a ton of swing speed and I think nine times out of 10 it’s going to give you more forgiveness than the four iron would do four iron is obviously going to come more into play if you’re playing into the wind and you want to keep a lower ball flight if you’re going to get a lot of run maybe that’s the time for a 4iron the seven would surprise me though it’s very easy to hit it pops up and it goes a good distance i do really like the fact that you could have that shot in your locker that’s going to go super high out of almost any lie it’s going to carry 200 yards drop and stop i think depending on the type of golf courses that you’re playing that’s a really unique type of shot that’s also the forgiving one to have in the bag if I was making my decisions right here and right now it’s a tough one i haven’t also done any of the custom options and so with both of the Ping G440s you can do customizing on the head which I haven’t done i’ve taken them as off the shelf as they are for stock for this i’d probably be looking at benching the 4 iron right now i think the four hybrid just being that much more forgiving a little bit longer little bit higher i think the hybrid covers the 4 iron for me at the moment and I’m curious to play it a little bit more the sevenwood i think this is the interesting one i think this has to be in amongst it for you if you’ve got the option to have this as a club to switch in and switch out I think that’s probably where it comes into play and again it’s going to come down to the type of course you play and how fast it is how much height you need how much you need the ball to stop so I think that’s those decisions I’m going to make i don’t know if they’re as drastic as I thought they might be at the start but they’ve given me a lot of food for thought i’ve enjoyed hitting them i’ve enjoyed the test and it’s the type of thing that I would encourage all of you guys to do as well if you get the opportunity get out there try different things don’t be pigeonholed like I was into one type of club hope something in this has been useful for you hope you’ll subscribe and I’ll hopefully see you in another video

  1. My 4 iron replacement is a 5 hybrid.

At the top of my bag is a 16 degree 4 wood, 19.7 degree 6 wood and 24 degree 5 hybrid.

Had a 7 wood for several years but found the yardage gap between the 5 hybrid and the 7 wood was pretty small. The main difference was the trajectory. 7 wood flies much higher.

Finding my new Cobra DS-Adapt 18 degree 5 wood lofted up to 19.7 is more useful than the 7 wood it replaced.

  2. I agree with your message at the end to test and try for oneโ€™s self. Iโ€™m still gaming the 4-iron (I have a 3 hybrid which I hit about 15-20yds further, but less precise). I feel pretty confident in it off the fairway, but I really rely on it as my safe tee shot which I can shape and knock down, especially as Iโ€™m often playing in wind along the coast. Also, youโ€™re not an โ€œaverage golferโ€!

  3. I would never own a 4 iron. After getting fitted I have a 6 iron, 5 hybrid, and a 7 wood. I love the hybrid and wood. Easy to hit and the height is critical for having the ball stop in the green.

  4. I got fitted for a 7W last year, initially loved it…and now I can't hit it straight – always pulls left! Hybrid and 4 iron get used now instead.

  5. Or both! I play a 4 iron and 7 wood because although theyโ€™re the same loft my 7 wood goes about 10 yards further so Iโ€™d have too big a gap between 5 iron and 7 wood if I took the 4i out. Iโ€™ve tried a few hybrids but always seem to hook the crap out of them so went down the 7 wood route and havenโ€™t looked back!

  6. Need to play Calderwood. Looks lovely.
4I hybrid is one if my favourite clubs however very keen to try a 7 Wood.

I think a 7 wood could be an interesting club for higher handicappers trying to play long out of a fairway bunker

  7. I carry both a 4 iron and a 7 wood, which is not ideal for gapping but I play on a windy course and sometimes I need a four iron for the shot shape or to keep it out of the wind.

  8. I got a 9w to try and replace my 5i but it ends up carrying the distance of my 4hy. Havenโ€™t been hitting it very well though so thinking Iโ€™ll try a game improvement 5i

  9. Doesnt surprise me the vote for the 4 hybrid. Its a very versatile club and since most average golfers find themselves in less than ideal lies, the hybrid gives great value. For myself, i get plenty of height and stopping power with my 4 and 3 hybrid so i dont feel the need to get the 7 wood just yet. A true 4 iron in my opinion shouldnt be in 90% of our bags. Data shows most folks need height and the 4i isnt the one for that. Great video Jon

  10. I am still undecided for me, between 4 iron & 4 hybrid. The hybrid has worse dispersion L to R. The 4 iron has miss-type of thinking it. Lots of driving range work on both seems not to resolve my deadlock. As I am not good enough to depend on either for any GIR from 190, these both serve equally as a second shot on par 5s.

  11. I generally carry 7 wood and 4 hybrid because I genuinely see a 12-15 yard or one club gap. When itโ€™s super windy I drop the 7 wood for 3 hybrid at 19 degrees or 4 crossover at 21 degrees (same as 7 wood) as I get very different shots which cover the same distance.

    Good video Jon thanks

  12. There's nothing easier to hit than Cobra one length hybrids.
I game a one length 3 hybrid at 19 degrees and a one length 5 hybrid at 24 degrees.
I can get hit both of those higher or lower to get a little extra distance or less distance depending on the wind conditions and the shot that I need.
They are also very easy to hit low shots under trees and they can get out of any lie.
Not possible with a 7 wood or 4 iron.

  13. I love my callaway 4 hybrid and 7 wood. Donโ€™t need a 4 iron anymore. 7wood only club to hit onto an elevated green 175-200 yards for me.

  14. I have a 7 wood and a 4 iron. I hit my 7 wood 210 yards but my 4 iron around 195. They may be same loft but the longer shaft makes a difference
