The European Swing takes us to Tuscany this week for the Italian Open as players battle for DP World Tour victory and spots at The Open Championship. Reigning champion Marcel Siem enjoyed one of his career highlights as he made a final-hole birdie in regulation play and then overcame Tom McKibbin in a play-off to win last year’s Italian Open. This week, the historic Italian Open takes place at Argentario Golf Club. In honour of Franco Chimenti, former President of the Italian Golf Federation, the best finisher among players born or after January 1, 2000, who make the cut, will be awarded the Memorial Franco Chimenti.

and we start with Jordan Smith mr green’s in regulation here he is at the fourth the par four his 13th hole six under par already going nicely yes and using the slope very nicely there for Jordan Smith that front right pin there at the fourth he’ll tap that one in no problem cabrera Beo at the fourth he’s at four over par right now and that’ll spin back back to three over that’ll be
a friendly hole location for Ferguson likes to move everything left to right excellent ferguson at the fifth fourth shot get in yes there you do that’s nicely done talented player isn’t he so is David Reta although he’s been a little bit quiet since that breakthrough win in the Czech Republic last year struggling this week or is he out with that one he’s not yes good timing there trying to make his way through to the weekend level pass surely the cut surge for the cut this is Olison the lefty just 312 yds this par four but it’s a layup for most of the players and that’s the plan again just trying to control his flight into this headwind excellent well talk of his swing mirroring Maroy and I can see the resemblance plenty of room to work with it almost too much in fact play this as he wishes get it moving forward on landing exactly like that that’s going to be a terrific opening par might have been confused by that moved a lot he looks like a class act Frenchman six top 10s already uphill putt breaking a little from right to left scene for birdie here at the third well that went in a pace two in a row for Marcel another one of the Italians 19 in the field that’s Mazzolei very nicely done well funny enough driving the ball’s gone from the the most difficult part of the game you 30 years ago to the easiest nowadays just about to a man everyone’s popping at 300 yards fairly regularly down the middle nowadays that was a wonderful four for Iora here’s Kubra thought it was Maroy for a minute quite brilliant you see that Maroy finish there Dan did you see that
out of the bunker here at the eighth tough far three that Dan was talking about that’s very nicely played play actually played that too well in fact the par threes is unusual isn’t it five par threes but they’re all good yeah it’s a strange T-shot this it’s just straight over the trees and uh fairway sweeps from left to right and with how firm they’re getting it’s quite easy to run out there in that rough just to the left of him so great drive and he took advantage of it
it looks the first time you get there it looks like it’s a split fairway doesn’t it when you stand on the tea you know one goes right one goes a little left i think it’ll be very difficult to do both jobs but the rumor going around is that he is going to if he does qualify he’s going to he’s going to play in it and be captain
but um that’s a good shot pick that one up especially when you see how much effort Luke puts into the European team if Keegan wants to do the same over there he’s probably going to struggle to play as well
well David as a man who’s played in a couple of rider cups what do you think
he will play van’s ball is lying nicely he’s got a lot to carry to get to the fringe that’s an outstanding shot dead oh what a shot fantastic or an eight iron or a nine iron chip and run why do they always take the sandwich and stuff like that why do modern players as we watch Ayora with another birdie back to back thinking 10 yards of help with the downwind left to right how about you Richard isn’t the hanging live ball below your feet
i will go for hanging live ball below your feet yes yeah okay using the slope very nicely
he has isn’t he look at that almost a kicking birdie there for Ferguson so Todd Clemens was grandstanding a little bit when he got the wedge out just toddle on down to the hole doesn’t it and then you pop a great par three in front of it like this it’s uh makes it even better bit more tricky in the wind today
i was just about to say this one’s an interesting one cuz you want to flight it down that’s a fantastic shot um but yeah you want to flight it down but you can’t really cuz it’s uh so elevated it just seems to pop up anyway is there much on this one Dan fairly flat green yeah to be honest the greens this week in general are pretty flat there’s a few with uh quite big slopes but as you see there that one was pretty straight and uh yeah I think a lot of players are getting fooled out and overreading them definitely again with a front pin and this much damn wind tricky to get it close [Applause] wow perfect well described there from Tim just as it started slowing down it did just move it a little to the right whether that was the lie on the ground or the wind I don’t know but it was well spotted from our Mr barta trying to fight his way and make the weekend in his national open championship a stunning shot fairway fan for Martin Coover the ninth eyeing it up and why not tell you what he’s hit some shots out there today as uh
now this is a look at Aora where man I got slightly confused with i thought he was hitting second shots 480 yards but he didn’t so this is for a par anyway scorecard paints no pictures walks off with a five it’s incredible that
stays bogey free that is some par isn’t it absolutely might just play Evans ebs away fairly flattish line here for Sullivan now he can go straight up the flag from 93 yds likes to cut across these little pitch shots get them to land a little softer like that with spin beautifully played i think always a good sign that you that someone’s playing well and
this flag there on the 16th says 15 on four from the left but it’s not 15 over that water 15 from the right hand side as we look at that green spin now and it comes down it comes even further even further and I feel he should be taking the lead here now this is Coover a ball above his feet a bit of a hanging lie should move from right to left third shot here at the 12th little bit of right to left on this one looking where he’s aiming and does it come back it does the Frenchman strides forward once again fifth B of the day for the 22y old Frenchman he moves to five under he’s meanwhile to the Frenchman the ever so steady but rather quiet Frenchman Adrien Sadier still hunting a first DP World Tour title it’s his 200th start this week will it be the one we shall see great shot there yeah 421 yds this one he strolled up to the green got his putter out bit of right to left and found the bottom of the hole for Sadia to finish with the birdie home in 31 one drop shot today at the 13th dan Bradbury his home hole as well playing alongside Leapora and should another one in beautifully the first two days 68 for Dan on this wonderful Friday hot day 115 yds ball slightly above his feet pin on the front but he can just about bring it to a standstill from this range with a sand wedge in hand bit like at Kubra he’s some player this lad is to move to minus six which he does comfortably if you’re looking at the winner here him he’s some player big put for Rafaer he’s on plus one he’s not now he’s on level one hole to go par five the finishing hole as well
well this is quite that really is quite the contact by Rafa oh I thought that was going in then next one will be some good wedges today spin back
should do and that is a chance there a little bit shorter than the T he had on the 16th to take the lead but that will be to take the lead and in its own way equally impressive that’s 65 and what’s more in these tricky conditions that is a bogey free round for young Aelyora up to 18 Rafa Cabrera Beo now what’s this for is it for another birdie it is oh what a finish what a day for into the breeze it’s never an easy mix and that’s exactly what you’re supposed to do from that range when you’re a professional golfer and you got a name on the bag two holes left to play for Chakara this at the 17th 163 today the pin the pin the Oh very nice he’s a four under part he’s moved 37 up today so it’s playing quite a lot shorter relaxed style isn’t it it almost looks like he’s not standing to a putt that top hand miles away from the chest and in it goes now how’s that for a finish that’s excellent isn’t it great
well it was a great putt something about putts on the final green as well when you’re up there is added pressure already nicely handled so he is in a share of second place with Dan Bradbury every winner
this man has been a first time winner i wonder if the theme will continue this week we’ll see another great shot in there from Coug the last to put the cherry really on the cake it’s been a good day it’s been an excellent day in fact for young Martin Kubra 63 so he ties that course record set a little earlier by Rafa Cabrera Beo we’ve seen some good play we’ve seen some bad bounces we’ve seen one or two rather errant shots but uh that’s how it stands moving into the weekend of the 82nd Open Ditalia from wonderful Argentario Golf Club
dan 200 under 68 today how does that make you reflect on your course record yesterday and how brilliant that was
yeah I I didn’t really feel like I did too much different to be honest um had a little spell in the middle there where I just didn’t play good golf um but yeah it was it was very similar at the start and the end so yeah to kind of put it all together yesterday was was nice i feel like I have to ask what happened on one oh I just I hit it right off the tea just a terrible shot laid up cuz I could barely see my ball um which was the right decision hit a poor wedge fancied the put and knocked it 6 foot past and missed it coming back got a bit excited but no it happens it’s so hot out here it was I’d say a lapse in concentration probably on the first put um but I mean again still happy with the day you must be pleased though with how you recovered your composure picking up another couple of birdies birdieing the last in these conditions
yeah it was a nice way to finish um like I say from kind of one until four I was struggling and then on four my cadets just said to me just just slow it down a little bit just getting a little bit quick at the top and uh did that and then from five onwards played some really nice stuff again
perfect
so yeah exactly try and keep that up for tomorrow
easy as that and what do you do now i mean you said yesterday you were going to lie down in the air conditioning for 2 hours you’ve got a long afternoon to stay out of the sun what’s the plan
lit same i mean I’ll just be going back um just resting i might even take a nap it was nearly start um and then yeah just just get some dinner tonight and and yeah go again at least I think tomorrow we’ll be out late so there’s plenty of time to recover a little bit before tomorrow
nap sounds like a great plan well done Dan thank you
