Wrapping up another week, Claus and Max talk about evrything lef over including the ICC Champion’s Trophy, the launch of the new Formula 1 Season and Jacques Kruyswijk winning on the European Tour.
but the biggest game of the tournament will have been uh Pakistan playing India it’s called a massive rivalry but it’s not really that much of a rivalry it’s maram is not a bowler either Mar bows pies down the middle when we don’t have anyone else to bowl it looked like rent crowd who was walking behind the car or jamming there a whole bunch of hip-hop people Christian Horner does himself no favors though he’s the only one I think out of that whole drive to survive series Who come out looking worse than if no camera had been on it ever rewind [Music] bench opinions three idiots with amateur analysis there’s good energy in the gym hey Gina stop cheating on those situps white Goodman oh is this dodgeball Dodge wall Welcome to The Leftovers that’s the two of us that’s the two of us standing all you’re left with um we’re missing Dum if this is the first episode you’re listening to uh from this week’s segment unfortunately he is sick maybe by the time this comes out he’s not sick anymore hopefully the man’s been sick for quite a while he has been sick for all doesn’t say a lot for his immune system but but if you’d like to see anything regarding football or rugby or just what happens in our day-to-day lives check out the other episodes that we have yeah posted they were some of the greatest ones we’ve ever recorded that’s because Dominic’s not here no that’s that’s har same but that’s what usually what um that’s how you get the the YouTube algorithm is you have to say these like scandalous or like yeah our greatest episode yet and you need to comment yeah yeah do you want Dominic back yes I mean please say yes regardless of what you say we’re probably going to bring him back anyway sorry he’s under contract with us for uh the foreseeable future correct um welcome to this week’s leftover segment uh where we discuss everything that isn’t football or rugby um and or our lives Our Lives um the logical place to start is the ICC Champions Trophy currently happening in Pakistan um or not happening in Pakistan or not happening in Pakistan if you’re India um if you’re wondering what we’re talking about you can Dave into last week’s leftover segment where we unpacked a little bit the uh reason why India’s playing in Dubai um yeah it’s been a it’s been a really good tournament up until now um the pitchers have been flat The Spinners are doing their work um and a few teams are sort of putting their hands up and saying we’re amongst the favorites um unfortunately when this but we’re with us recording on a Monday and this coming out quite late in the week we are missing some games in the meantime which I think will give a much better indication of who’s a favorite um Australia did play well against Afghanistan uh sorry South Africa uh Australia played very big well against England okay I was going to say how I would hope Australia plays very well against Afghanistan the thing is about Afghanistan is that um especially when games are in the on the sub continent uh they’re a real tricky Customer because they’ve got some really dangerous spin Bowlers as well and they’ve got a A Few Good batsmen in there so they’re definitely um not to be underestimated yeah and it was South Africa’s first game of the of the tournament and it’s very similar to to when we played Scotland in the opening game of the Rugby World Cup you expect South Africa to win but you just don’t know if know what it it could go the other way and then you’re then you’re under the Kos so good win for them um Australia beat England in a real Humdinger um chasing down uh 351 um but the biggest game of the tournament up until the time of recording at least by name will have been uh Pakistan playing India and um which was played in Dubai which played in Dubai uh because of security concern for for for the Indian team um Pakistan only only posted 241 um in their 50 overs and I I was watching that game and it’s I don’t know if it’s India’s bowling discipline they just sort of keep hitting the right right um right spots um especially especially their spin Bowlers and they really strangle um strangle the the Pakistan batsman for runs they slow down the Run rate immensely um and Pakistan Under Pressure trying to get boundaries obviously continuously lock lost wickets and India chased down 241 with ease uh in 43 point something overs and just sort of I then researched um the last 10 years of Odis between India and Pakistan and it’s one of those things where it’s called a massive rivalry but results IND won all of them yeah India’s 1 n no sorry India’s eight Pakistan is one two and there’s one low old so it’s it’s not really that much of a rivalry it’s so it’s yeah it’s it’s it’s a rivalry by by in by its nature it’s history definitely is as a rivalry because Pakistan wasn’t always struggling this much but it’s starting to become sort of a a oneman a one team uh show and yeah it feels a bit felt a bit sorry for for Pakistan also watching the game there it’s it’s it makes it even sadder that that it couldn’t be played in Pakistan or India because in the beginning the stadium was still quite empty and you do miss that sort of when games are playing when played in Pakistan or India and it’s the two playing against each other there’s this like yeah it’s like this fever pitch in the stadium and it’s like the crowd is like moving the the and it’s that’s that’s amazing to see and it brings him back a little bit on what we discussed I don’t know when we discussed but we were discussing politics and Sport I think it was an relation to um hockey was the USA Canada USA Canada thing that and I don’t think you can ever separate politics and sports completely it’s just it’s supposed to be separated but they’re both so intertwined in fans lives that it plays it plays it plays a role the thing is at the end of the day you’re representing the nation it’s it’s not a private franchise or anything like that it’s it’s a nation and so it comes with its baggage yeah and it’s just so sad to see that um I mean I’m not going to unpack India Pakistan relations because that is something that I have no information on yeah but um from a uh sort of very ignorant blue-eyed world it’s sad that that rivalry can’t take place the way it used to because or like the way it used to in in some of the things that I’ve seen because it’s it’s such a great rivalry and it’s a Pity that it has to play be played on neutral grounds that there’s safety concerns in general and that it’s not just sort of a fullon rivalry in in in an opposing country me as you were alluding to I think from the the surroundings of it from like a fan base and all that it’s obviously very interesting and very exciting but when you watch that game it was slow yes I mean Pakistan lost the two first two wickets and then I think for like 30 overs they made about yeah 50 runs or something ridiculous yeah dude they were they were strangled and then then you wonder if it’s so the same thing happened to us when we were playing India in the T20 final last year um they sort of but that was when bumra is playing and he’s just he manages to keep the Run rate down so much and then your batsmen are so forced to try and create something out of nothing that either they’ve got the quality to do it or you’re you’re out and Pakistan’s batsman definitely were left wondering but um was Pakistan realistically a nation that no they lost to New Zealand in their opening game so they okay so they already one foot out at all they they’ve got one foot out which is a Pity because I think has the host nation host nation and if you don’t know how how things will go from there but um yeah um who in your view is uh amongst the top candidates to take this thing I think it’s between India Australia New Zealand’s good as well it’s a tough one because there’s a lot of good teams England also really good and so South Africa so it’s I was going to ask would you throw any sort of dark horses in the mix there yeah South Africa yeah Ryan rickleton made 100 there against Afghanistan you guys watched him during the sa2 we did watch him during the the sa2 but better ways or whatever was called um he’s unreal yeah uh there’s I also think that the the team that they played against Afghanistan is a bit of an interesting one I don’t know if I’ll would be putting I’m not a big fan of DOI yeah but we don’t really have that many good openers and he he did to his defense he did get in and then he just I mean he went out to a silly shot but he there’s there there was sign there um listen South African Cricket the selections you’ll you’ll it’s one of the strangest things in in the world to me because someone like Aiden Marram will be touted as the next big thing in cricket for the last 10 years yeah and Timber bavuma has had a much better career than him but like he’s never been tled as the next big thing everyone’s always said that from his schooling days and stuff like that Aden has this insane talent and sometimes you see that shining through but at what point is insane Talent just wasted talent because I’m sure there’s so many athletes and Sportsmen out there who had insane Talent at Youth Level who never even got to professional level there’s something else that comes with it to be a great uh to be the considered one of the greatest and it’s not just your talent like you need to have the mindset I don’t know what his training regime is like but there’s something missing in in him that would make him one of the best how are you comparing the two because K have I’m wrong but Aiden markr comes in at like four five six somewhere around there and he does a bit of bowling so he’s not an opening batsman making B comes in at at at three and Marram comes in at four buum used to be an opening batsman yeah but that he was put into that role because we didn’t have anyone else okay that’s not his his um preferred role he’s a wik keeper he’s not he’s not a bowler maram is not a bowler either Marr bows pies down the middle when we don’t have anyone else to Bow it’s an option we had we had another Captain who used to do that Graeme Smith who I’ve never met a man who’s got so much self-confidence but he was a good opening batsman he was a good opening batsman but he was a terrible terrible bowler and he’ put himself on and I don’t know what the thought was maybe it was to sort of I I assume it was to try and slow down the Run and he would bowl sort of a ball he was he he called himself a spin bowler but that thing did not move and it I think it was a slow bowler he a slow bowler but when you’re a slow bowler then at least you have to like pitch it in like a very dangerous Zone he would pitch it halfway down the pitch which listen I didn’t I wasn’t very successful at Cricket but I think I could have hit him off the park you don’t understand the psychology behind it he was luring the team into a false sense of security and then they bring on the fast Bowlers or the spin Bowlers and then wipe them out he definitely lured them those o were very confident at the end of Miss over um yeah but having the Cricket on is I love it I love having having a game on in the background I even had it on at work um and it’s especially with something like a 50 over game you can tune out for an hour and you can come back in and it’ll and you can get back into the swing of things and stuff like that it’s not as long as was a test match so I really love the format Odis it’s it’s it’s it it also reminds me a lot of of watching Cricket when I was younger um you know you sort of you camped in front of the TV you’ve got your own ball your own bat you’re sort of you’re remaking some of the shots you’re you’re getting excited about things um I’d say ODI is my favorite format yeah love it love it um it does take quite long um but think about our day yeah and that’s why I think it’s one of those it’s very similar to F1 which I think we’ll get to next uh in a sense that you don’t have to actively watch every minute of it which I love you know me I love being on my phone while the sports on no not just the sports series news movies it’s actually a very bad trait but you know my my interesting observation about you is that you have not the observation segment of the podcast but you have your headphones in whilst you’re watching TV so thing I reals and YouTube shorts on loud while you’re trying to watch sport no but sometimes you put the TV on and then you go and put your headphones on I wasn’t even yet so I’m trying to make like a like a really big effort to when I’m watching sport to put my phone away okay but it’s it’s become habit now that the ball will go out for a throw and I’ll pick up my phone immediately if I’m not if I’m not stimulated for yeah it’s terrible it’s [ __ ] terrible maybe you need to put your phone in like your bedroom or something I’ve started now not listening to music at the gym anymore I just go I [ __ ] raw dog that [ __ ] it’s actic dumb the music that’s played in the gym is it’s terrible terrible but it’s better for me it’s just I can’t have something playing the whole time at least I’m I’m not I’m not listening I’m not watching stuff when I go to bed but I do listen to podcasts so so would you leave your phone in the in the locker when you work out no I’ve got it with me for timer timer otherwise my brakes would be too long yeah yeah that’s my problem in the gym but that’s another problem for another day let’s get into some F1 let’s talk about the F1 the F1 had their massive release party I mean it wasn’t that massive I didn’t even know about it they launch party well I mean just because you don’t know about something doesn’t mean it’s not massive you don’t even know anything about Pakistan and India relations that’s huge um it was in London it was in the uh Millennium Stadium I think yeah oh sorry Wembley Stadium okay yeah the one with the arch right yeah yeah dude you picked that as one of your top five stadiums when we were still doing top fives I hope you know which one it was yeah I just wanted to let the viewers know which one I’m talking about underlines how much of a [ __ ] the arch is yellow [ __ ] list you made there anyway um I don’t I don’t know if they’ve ever done this launch party before because I’ve this is the first time I’ve ever heard of it I seem to remember videos and stuff like that of them launching their their liveries and and the the way the cars look I don’t know if they did events but didn’t they do that privately like like each team would do have their own launch party I mean classus listen you’re asking me things doesn’t matter uh maybe let us know in the comment section if I knew this I would start a sports podcast anyway um so the interesting thing is that mass stadium was all hosted by Jack whiteall they had this sort of runway in the middle of the stadium and all the cars were on this like floating platform and come out to all sorts of different music and laser shows and whatnot and then the drivers would walk out and uh the strangest one of them all was when uh Red Bull um revealed their car there was like it looked like rent crowd was walking behind the car all jamming there a whole bunch of hip-hop people and just it was just very very awkward uh to make the whole situation even weirder the British fans because it’s obviously in London so the British fans booed Max stappen and Christian hor oh [ __ ] um so that that caught a bit of controversy um and a [ __ ] launch event Jesus CH launch event yeah know people are passionate about not liking Max Sten uh on top of that obviously not liking Christian Horner currently yeah and it was the only team where the drivers did not speak every other team had at least one of the drivers or both of the drivers speak about the car and how excited they are about the season and all these different things but not maxen and Liam law do you think that’s his choice or do you think that’s the event sort of saying listen we don’t want to put you in the crossair I would I don’t think the event would get involved in that I think that’s more the team that would get uh make that call so Christian Horner does himself no favors though he’s the only one I think out of that whole drive to survive series who’d come out looking worse than if no camera had been on him ever yes is yeah he’s a bit of a snooty bastard just I don’t know there’s something about him that’s just he rubs people the wrong way yeah he’s just I think he’s a bit of a weasel you know he is a bit of a weasel 100% I mean if you look at photos of him in like the early 2000s he looks very weasel esque weasel esque or Weasley no that’s Ron Weasley um is Jack whiteall also the best that the Formula One could get for this event like I mean I don’t know if he’s maybe super passionate about form one I don’t know why they selected him maybe they trying to go with like a Ricky ja Globes yes that’s a [ __ ] teu version of Ricky ja if I’ve ever seen one bought him on wish yeah yeah so I don’t know why they went with Jack whiteall but uh obviously the loudest cheer in the room was when Mr Lewis hton came out in Ferrari what isn’t he sir Le Hamilton now yeah yeah sir Lewis Hamilton came out for Ferrari and red Scarlet Red I won’t lie I’m very excited to see how he does I’m I’m very excited to see what the partnership is like between him and Charles Clair because obviously Charles Clair for the the last couple of years has sort of been their unofficial number one driver so how does that Dynamic change it’s going to be an interesting season for sure I don’t really care too much what happens with Charlotte CL but I mean you know he the prettiest man in the in the Grid on the grid do you think so I think he’s a very good-looking guy he is a good-looking man he’s also he’s got that sort of nonchalant uh monagas uh when he when when you see photos and videos of him uh in Mona you’re just like this guy’s got style he’s got it’s got the looks it’s got it all man it’s got it all um so yeah that’s the F1 they have now been testing over the last week and uh when does the season start I think now in March beginning of March usually F1 drive to survive come out in Feb the new season used to do in the past is there a new season I don’t know I thought they stopped that did they yeah I think so oh [ __ ] oh I don’t know might be that’s a big call no mind drive to Survivor I don’t know when it’s coming out we’ll have to check we’ll have to check uh maybe let us know there um let’s see what happens obviously McLaren is hoping to finally win it um and Red Bull is hoping not to capitulate so is it fair to say that Lando Norris is your favorite driver yes okay no 100% he’s my favorite driver yeah I’d say was L Norris and then Charles clar I really like like him as well you just like them beiging down the middle hey he just [ __ ] I wouldn’t say personality of a [ __ ] white page I wouldn’t say do you think lanon noris is uh is beige like I think he’s I think he tries to to have an A personality but he just can’t okay fair enough I think I think lots of people think he’s an [ __ ] I think that’s when he tries to have a personality I just think there’s so maybe he should be more Bas I think we need like guys like that who’s that that Russian guy who’s the son of the owner Mazin yeah we need guys like him I mean you could barely string a send together we need more guys like LOL we need more people who’ve been who drive because their dad owns a team who are terrible drivers M was like I I just don’t know what’s happening yeah terrible cuz I think that makes the sport really interesting if you just if it’s just [ __ ] daddy throws money at the situation and then the boys just come out and ruin the cars so you well okay now but so you’re quite excited about having a personality like maxen part of the grid because he sort of I also think yeah I like guys who are a little bit of an [ __ ] he’s actually threatened not to uh come to any more launch parties if that’s how he’s treated when he walk like he’s being a [ __ ] because he deserves being booed as well he’s such a [ __ ] you can’t be surprised that you get booed also you know I think being booed at an event I think you can sort of turn that into being like a cool villain yeah if you get a lot of hate comments online and people are sort of like like some of the [ __ ] that happens online that’s that’s where I would say this is crossing the line being boo unvented just enjoy being in the villain role Yeah Yeah you sort of thrust yourself into that he has kind of placed himself there yeah um but one of the interesting things is obviously Max is not threatening not to join these launch parties anymore uh if you look at drivers in the past like some people I know L Hamilton for a while also refused to go to like the post uh race press conferences he just like no I don’t need that in my life so these guys you know are a bit divver resque Yeah and they’ll all have their they’ll all have their reason to it and you know sometimes I mean everyone will know this and will feel like this sometimes you feel like you’re being picked on and un and unw warrantly so and you you slide into a bit of a victim role and then maybe in hindsight you look back on it a few years later and you go ah wish I had had handled that differently and it’s very easy to sit on this couch like we do every week and say no for sure the thing is they need to do these things because they’re doing it for the fans and if they don’t have fans yeah then they don’t have then they’re Racing for Mahala I think they’re doing it for money not for the fans and they get paid either way no sure but I’m saying if they if they stop coming to like these events and and doing postmatch race interviews and stuff like that they don’t they don’t have the I find it weird because something like there’s there’s so many sports that there’s so much money in even though the Fan Fair isn’t massive you know like golf uh Motorsport probably things like Polo maybe even tennis to a certain extent because of the people who play it and who enjoy that sport who are quite wealthy there’s a lot of money in it and companies love to sponsor golf tournaments and I’m always like how does this make finan sense to you how does it make sense for like a an investment company or a bank to sponsor a PJ Tour event because like the viewership figures aren’t great and it doesn’t strike me as something that would return much on an investment it’s just it’s just the um Prestige Prestige of being associated to a golf event or something like that and that’s wild to me so all the fans could leave and they’d still be like the golf event yeah I mean like I think it’s the Ferrari has got HP as its main sponsor and it’s just this massive white stripe down the back of it like I wonder how many people buy a laptops after watching a Formula 1 race yeah or printers never buy an HB printer cuz they’re the worst printers what is the German version of LinkedIn called again damn let me Google it was it for I don’t know so I went to an event on on Friday for work and it was um the baller League which is a new football league um that has started in in Europe it’s uh there’s three different leagues called the Kings League the bowler league and the icon league and they’re all very similar um in a sense that it’s ex professionals or sort of celebrities who create these street football teams and then these teams play against each other in a league and it’s I think five against five um on smaller pitches and then they’ll have celebrity captains and um and ex- professionals who select the teams and I went to to the draft um on Friday night cuz our company’s sponsoring it wait let me just first find what this company’s called because that’s what I’m trying to get at um yes and that was weird to me because the whole thing is sponsored by King do you remember that oh yeah of course King is like the the German version of what LinkedIn was but then all Germans got onto LinkedIn anyway because it’s just the bigger platform and they pump money into this into this um football league and the name is everywhere and I just thought to myself what a weird place for things something like that to to um advertise because I don’t know what they what they’re pivoting towards but the the the people who are watching this are all streamers on Twitch right that’s where they that’s where they where the league is broadcasted and that means that your that your your your average viewer is probably somewhere between like 12 and maybe 25 yeah 26 anding is a is a a platform for professionals to look for jobs and share what they’ve done in their careers yeah it’s probably just as much of as a wank as LinkedIn is well 100% yeah definitely is as much of a it’s a weird place for them to try and Revitalize their brand but I mean maybe they they’re pivoting towards I don’t know maybe they’re trying to become the new Tik Tok um oh God I was at that event and I was talking to some I think told you this I was talking to someone who I who I used to work with and you know these people who you can you ask them you have to ask them like a 100 questions to try and keep the conversation going and not once during the entire conversation will they ask you a single thing right it’s you’re basically now it’s it’s their show you’re doing an interview you’re doing an interview essentially what you had to do during the football just yesterday but that was fun yeah uh sorry we digress um so yeah so much for the Formula 1 um let’s talk about a small ball um there was some golf on on the weekend A friend of the podcast or a friend of a individual who is on the podcast um friend of Doms Jac chv um one on the European tour um co- sanctioned event first ever win first ever win uh the Kenya open so congratulations to him um I believe he won by three Strokes in the end three Strokes yeah um massive Moving Day on Saturday uh um we know this because we got minute by minute bye updates from Dominic and it’s um I think it’s hopefully a massive breakthrough to win I know it’s financially obviously very lucrative but uh we were talking about um creating winning mentality and what it takes to get over the line and I think once you’ve done it once that probably just generates belief in you that you can do it again I know from us having followed him through Dom over the last years there have been a lot of times where he’s done well throughout tournament only to get to a Sunday to then struggle to get things over the line and has dipped off a little bit and that’ll definitely uh eat at you so to get it over the line is a big achievement he is now because he’s now won this event he has his European tour card secured for the next three years I believe or two years something like that how much Tak massive pressure off your back that’s what I was going to ask is like do you think he will now perform better a because of this winning mentality and winning culture that’s breeding within him and and through not having the pressure of having to fight for his card every time well I mean it can go one of two ways either this drives you on to really just build success even if you’re not winning regularly just competing regularly or and touch where this doesn’t happen it sort of can put you into a bit of a state of I’m fine now yeah but I don’t think that that’s what’ll happen um I don’t think I think he’ll he’ll um what do you call it um sort of take his foot off the gas and and become a bit lethargic I think the the logical thing when you win is to want to win more and I think any professional athlete has that drive in him so we’ll be interesting to see how he does um it is a co-sanctioned event so it is not necessarily one of the premium ones so it would be great to see how he does against a much stronger field in one of the big events in Europe um so exciting times for him he got exciting times he got married in in January Dominic went to that wedding and it’s the best wedding present he could give himself yeah everything’s coming up right this year yeah 2025 long may continue I know Dominic is a very passionate supporter and loyal friend of his so Dominic’s obviously over the moon extic maybe we get him on the Pod one day t a leftovers uh segment yeah I mean Dom has gone to see him play in Munich a couple of times on the European tour I think they’re regulars there they are Reg is yeah they know they’ve met essentially half the European tour and uh and I know that they are intending on going down this year again maybe something uh interesting for us to also go check it out and visit um yeah are we playing golf this weekend it’s quite cold this weekend ah damn it looking at the temperatures I think it was like actually yeah cuz I’m going to Carnival and I think Saturday I’m busy so we’re not playing any golf this weekend when are you leaving for Carnival a Sunday morning okay so you’re Sunday lunch time and then you come back when Tuesday evening nice be a good one um anything else you want to discuss on the leftover segment I can’t think of any other sport there was on anything else that’s left over I can talk about my sport I played with of binton on the weekend how was that it’s good not as good as the first time I played i’ I’ve I’ve dropped in form in the second time I’ve ever played watching professional badm is super impressive because you actually you like it’s amazing to see that shuttlecock move that quickly and those [ __ ] wrist movements is intense I don’t know how that translates to amateur badon and I don’t know if watching you or is that is that thring I don’t think it’s as fun to watch that being said the people that I play with um they are quite good and have played for many years so one of our friends Conrad who also plays golf with us he played for many many years doesn’t know how to do the scoring he got very confused on that but an incredible player I mean he’s also like two meters he’s got a massive wingspan I think that would help on any one of those like sort of small field racket Sports 100% yeah he he he comes from such a height that he’s just smashing the ball down whereas obviously if you’re a little bit shorter you just can’t get that sort of downward trajectory but you’re also not short I’m not short but I’m not as good or I’m not good at badminton I’m just get something that you’re really going to get into badmon I’m not really going to get into into what what I am trying to get into is uh again is squash uh Our Friend Martin and myself we play once a week now yeah squash was a good time we you got really into uh paddle tennis and we gave you a paddle racket for your birthday and you’ve never played again I always play when I’m overseas and I don’t take the rord with me unreal but also I’m not playing paddle when it’s called out no and I do enjoy playing it outside so it’s something that I would like to play in Summer got so many things on the buet list that we have to do this summer we said we wanted to go cycling again I’d like play paddle um this summer maybe not regularly but maybe once or twice um beach volleyball is always a good time we’ve got a lot coming on uh that’s nothing in comparison to any professional sport um you’ll see a bit of it on our socials um we are trying to get a little bit better give you a little bit more um content from when we do do things but unfortunately we’re not people who generally have our phones in our hands recording each other but we’re going to try and get better at it if you want to follow us there um otherwise thanks for listening this week um thanks for listening today and like And subscribe and we hope to see you again on Monday for another weekly wrap-up from the three of us from the three of us well it will be on Tuesday but we will be talking about it on Monday yeah yes absolutely regardless hope to see you again CH bye

F1 launch event was at the O2 in Greenwich, it’s a dome shaped arena that seats 20k in SE London. And as far as I know it’s the first ever. Edit: Normally cars liveries would be published and then first seen at pre season testing
