Scottie Scheffler’s putter switch last March led to him winning at Bay Hill, TPC Sawgrass, and Augusta National. Scottie Scheffler’s TaylorMade Spider Tour X with an L-Neck hosel also helped him win the Paris Olympics, the Tour Championship and now the 2025 PGA Championship. But Scottie Scheffler’s putter change to the TaylorMade Spider Tour X L-Neck was not made for the reason most golfers change to a mallet. Discover what Scottie Scheffler’s TaylorMade Spider Tour X L-Neck offered that his blade putters never could, and what it could mean for your game and performance on the greens.

hey everybody welcome back to the channel So now that Scotty Shuffler has won his third major championship the 2025 PGA I could understand why you might have forgotten that two years ago at this time he was among the worst putters on the PGA Tour And it wasn’t until he put in a lot of hard work and started working with this putter which specifically is a Tailor-ade Spider Tour X with an Elneck Huzzle that things really turned around for Sheffller It jumpst started his 2024 season helped him win an Olympic gold medal and now he is the owner of the Watermaker Trophy So let’s get into the reasons why this putter specifically helps Sheffler and what it might mean for you So it’s just about every person who follows golf understands Sheffller is one of the most elite players off the tea and from the fairway and he has been that way for a long time But putting was always sort of the thing that was really his Achilles heel In 2023 things really bottomed out He fell to number 162 at the end of the 2023 season in strokes gain putting That’s the best stat at tracking players overall performance on the greens compared with other players on the PGA Tour Now when I had a chance to speak with the folks at Tailor-Made what they were telling me was that the biggest shortcoming that he had was that using the blade putters that Sheffller had had in his bag previously and he’d always been a blade guy He had a challenge sort of getting the face of his putter lined up along his intended target line It wasn’t a speed issue for Sheffler It wasn’t a real struggle to read greens properly Really Scotty Sheffller’s biggest problem was aiming his putter along his intended target line and getting the ball started where he wanted it started And that was the thing that really frustrated him So as you might recall he started going through a number of different putter changes and trying different types of putters throughout the end of the 2023 season That including putting different blade style putters into his bag going with different mallet style putters specifically spider types of prototype putters some of which had a stainless steel or a mil insert instead of the pure roll insert He even finished calendar year 2023 using a Logan Olsen design blade style putter that was custom made just for him So why would this putter the Spyder Tour X with the Elmac Huzzle be the thing that really sort of put Sheffller’s putting back on track When most golfers out there pros and amateurs alike think about mallet style putters like a Spyder Tour X they think about stability They think about forgiveness and that really wasn’t the issue for Sheffller His problem again was alignment So blade style putters just simply don’t have the real estate the size to put in many different types of alignment features You typically get lines you typically get some dots and for some players that can work out really well but it wasn’t working for Sheffler By going with a design like the Spider Tour X he was able to take advantage of Tailormaid’s True Path alignment system This really large white alignment system that’s along the top of this putter that has a single black line on the top This system clicked for Sheffler and he was able to aim this along his intended target line more effectively and surprisingly he was able to start making contact with the ball much more into the center of the face of the putter I was really surprised when the tail made folks explained to me that Sheffller had an issue of making contact all over the face by pro standards and that he wasn’t making center strikes as often as he really needed to So this putter helped him not only line up the putter more effectively along his target line It helped him make solid strikes in the center of the face more often and that ended up being the recipe for success for Sheffller The effect was dramatic If you recall Sheffller not only won the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in 2024 he led the field that week in strokes game putting And the very next week he successfully defended his championship at the players championship After Sheffller made his putter change he went on an absolute tear winning not only the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship but obviously he won the Masters last year He also won the RBC Heritage the week following Then he turned around and won the Memorial Tournament at Mirfield Village Jack Nicholas’s tournament He won the Olympic gold medal shortly after getting a top 10 finish at the Open Championship He was fourth at the FedEx St Jude and ended up winning the Tour Championship as well as the Hero World Challenge So quite a year for Scotty Sheffller after he made his putter change Just about everything in 2025 about Sheffller’s putting has improved Not only is his strokes gained average way way up he ranks 18th in one putt percentage and also 17th in three putt avoidance Shuffler is also making just over 90% of all of his putts from 10 ft nin which ranks 16th on the PJ tour Okay so here are some of the really basic things that you might want to know about the Tailor-Made Spider Tour X with the Elneck Huzzle Um number one it is going to have a pure insert that is going to be 80% sirin so it’s going to have a very soft feel There’s a little bit of metal powder that’s been put into this And the reason for that is that going with 100% sirin according to Tailor-Made gave most players the feeling was a little bit too soft too mushy too quiet By sort of mixing in a little bit of aluminum um and a little bit of metal powder into this they were able to get just the right sort of feel that they were looking for and just the right sound The um grooves that are in this insert are pointed down at a 45° angle And so they are going to help to grab onto the back of the golf ball at the moment of impact and get it rolling end over end top spin if you will much quicker rather than getting the ball hopping or skidding or jumping where you’re going to getting inconsistency in performance You want to get the ball rolling as quick as you can And according to Tailorment the Pure Roll insert is going to be able to do that really really well A lot of the weight on this putter has been taken out of the middle section here and been shifted forward and to the perimeter and that is again going to help with stability It’s going to increase the MOI The weights in the back of the head are adjustable based on the club’s length So if you’ve got a longer putter to get the swing weight just right you’re probably going to go with lighter weights Shorter putters are going to go with heavier weights again for swing weight but you will be able to work with a good custom fitter and put in pretty much any type of weight that you want based on your own preferences And of course the unique thing about this one is that originally when the Spyder Tour putters and the Spyder Tour X putters were released this Elneck Huzzle was not one of the hoszles that was originally available at retail as you can see it creates a relatively um moderate amount of towh hang probably about 30° of towang or so So it’s going to favor a player who has a very slight arc to their stroke Um but again like I said different huzzle configurations are available and they should be able to have a huzzle that will match your stroke and your stroke type So I’ve just found that story to be absolutely fascinating The fact that Sheffer can be amongst the most elite players off the tea and from the fairway and actively work to improve his putting that’s hard to do That’s really hard to do and it’s something that’s relatively unusual at the game’s most elite levels So give yourself a little bit of grace if you’re working on one aspect of your game and you notice that as you put in the work there that maybe some other parts of your game tend to fall off a little bit It’s natural It happens Shuffler is the exception and that’s why he’s the number one player in the world So what does this all mean for you What do you take away from the fact that the number one player in the world made a putter change and ended up becoming a better putter How does that help you Well number one I think it proves that you want to keep an open mind when it comes to your golf equipment You want to make sure that the tools in your bag are going to help you perform at your best Sheffler had been a longtime blade style putter user A lot of players at the most elite levels over the course of many years and over the course of the decades had been blade players but more and more of them are starting to open up their eyes and become more willing to put a mallet style putter in their bag for a host of different reasons Yes they tend to be much more forgiving Yes they’re more stable on off-center strikes which for a lot of pros usually isn’t the issue but but why not The big advantage again as Sheffller sort of benefited from is that they are larger and they give you more real estate for better alignment features So between all of those different things and the fact that nowadays mallet style putters tend to have a lot more offerings when it comes to huzzle configurations you can get them to be face balanced You can get them like shufflers to have a moderate or small amount of toe hang You can get significant amount of toe hang You can get mallet style putters that have zero balance All these things basically mean that there is a mallet style putter that is probably out there that will fit your natural putting stroke really really well So if you’ve been a blade person because the way that the Huzzle configuration on blade style putters always matched your stroke there’s probably now a mallet style putter out there that will also match your stroke as well Okay so if you have any questions about this putter specifically about some of the statistics and some of the aspects of the equipment that Scotty Shuffler uses please feel free to drop them in the comment area below I do try and answer as many comments as I can And if you have any other questions about golf equipment in general I am here to
