Sergio Garcia talks with Garrett about how much he wants to play on in the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, his idol Jose Maria Olazabal as vice captain & recent conversations he’s had with Team Europe captain Luke Donald.
all right Garrett Johnson here with Sergio Garcia and Sergio and I think about where you’re at in your career and there’s been so many highs and lows but I think about the most highs have been at the Ryder Cup and your fellow countryman Jose Maria Alfabo is going to be there as a vice captain again for you Does that give you extra motivation to try to make the team No I mean there’s to make to make to try to make that team is already enough motivation Uh but uh to have uh to have Jose as a vice captain is always a plus Uh so that’s uh that’s something that’s going to be obviously very important in uh and very big for for the team for team Europe and we’re going to need it because um in in New York it’s going to be it’s going to be tough Well you know New York pretty well being at Beth Page July like what is it about like overcoming those crowds What do you think will be the key for a lot of the players of Europe Uh I think it’s going to be mainly uh you know mainly just trying to uh try to be focused on on what you’re doing Uh not worry too much about the crowds hopefully get some momentum on our side So then that way that way you quiet down the crowds a little bit But um you know we know we know how exciting the uh how how exciting how excited the the New York crowds get So um you know it’s uh it’s always you know it’s always uh challenging uh when you you know when you’re rooting uh maybe not for you So um you know but um but I’m sure it’s going to be amazing Yeah You said that you already have enough selfm motivation to make the team What is it right now where you’re at in in your year at the moment How are you looking at things and you know what would you like I know you added some European tour DP World Tour events right Trying to get more attention on that or uh Well I mean obviously I u you know I I have to be a member of um of the European of the DP World Tour to to be eligible So uh yeah So I’m going to be playing uh a few a few uh DP Walter events and uh you know just uh just kind of keep keep working hard on my game Uh keep uh keep trying keep keep giving myself chances and uh you know hope that uh that it’s enough to to be there in uh late September Have you had any talks recently with Luke I know he’s a close friend of yours and you guys some great run at Madina I remember that But any recent talks just to kind of get a sense of what you need to be doing you know Yeah Yeah Yeah We we talked We talk pretty regularly Uh we uh I think we talked maybe like a week week and a half ago Uh we obviously saw each other at the PGA We uh we will see each other in um at the BMW International Open in Munich So uh yeah we stay we stay in touch What’s your understanding of what he wants to see out of your game do you think Oh I think he just wants to see a lot more of what uh what I’ve been doing uh the last you know year and a half or so Um and um you know that’s that’s what I that’s what I’m going to try to do Yeah Well last thing I just want to say um for you as you get into know there’s driver testing that’s on the PGA Tour and at the at the majors I was talking with Patrick Reid and he said that he’d like to see driver testing out on live golf Like kind of what’s your perspective on that I mean they do it in some of the other tournaments So I don’t I don’t have a problem with that And you know at the end of the day we’re we’re trying to make sure that uh that you know all our all of our clubs and drivers are conforming And you know sometimes they they they get to the limit because of just hitting balls Uh simple as that So um you know I’m I’m obviously fine with that And we’ll see Well Sergio always appreciate the time Good to see you Thank you
