matt Fitzpatrick is refusing to plead for a place in Luke Donald’s European Rder Cup team despite acknowledging that only a captain’s pick can save a spot at this year’s showdown against Team USA at Beth Paige Black in September the 2022 US Open champion once a fixture inside the world’s top 10 has seen his ranking tumble to around number 80 with just one top 10 finished this season a tied eighth at the PGA Championship and three missed cuts to his name with the RDER Cup looming and six captains picks up for grabs the pressure is on the Yorkshire to turn things around in the coming weeks fitzpatrick however is taking a nononsense approach to the situation he’s had brief conversations with Europe captain Luke Donald but insists he won’t lobby for a pick based on past performances or sentiment i’ve had brief chats with Luke he told Sky Sports but being more experienced now and knowing how this all works I’m not trying to force the issue i’m not texting Luke saying “I really want to be there it’s important for me if I play well I’ll be there if I don’t I won’t i’m happy to accept that.” The 30-year-old added that while he cherishes the idea of being part of team Europe he’s fully aware that his recent form puts him on the outside looking in “my RDER Cup experience hasn’t exactly been what you dream of as a kid,” he said but I love playing in the RDER Cup i love being part of that team environment with all the lads that said I know where I stand i’m not close to making the team at the moment and I’ll need some strong results to change that i’m not thinking about it too much right now i’m just focused on climbing out of the hole I’m in and playing better golf despite his struggles Fitzpatrick remains very much in Donald’s thoughts after his encouraging performance at the PGA Championship the captain praised his talent but acknowledged the dip in performance “fitzy is obviously a world-class player,” Donald said statistically he’s been just sort of average across the board lately to be a top player these days you’ve got to really stand out in at least one area when he won the US Open his driving and putting were excellent those areas aren’t bad now just not at the level he or we would expect still it was great to see him do well on a tough track like Quail Hollow unfortunately for Fitzpatrick his Rder Cup record does little to help his case in three appearances he has struggled to make an impact failing to earn a single point in 2016 and 2021 he described his experience in Rome in 2023 where he earned just one point as horrendous and embarrassing last time out Fitzpatrick finally got a chance in the four balls partnering Rory Mroy to a 5 and3 win on the opening day however the pair were defeated on the 18th hole by Patrick Kentlay and Windham Clark the following day fitzpatrick then lost his singles match to Max Homa capping another disappointing Rder Cup for the Englishman as the clock ticks down to Donald’s final selections Fitzpatrick is fully aware that only a resurgence in form will put him back in the conversation for now he’s staying focused on the one thing that matters letting his golf do the talking
