so you’ve been struggling with your short game and you’re not sure exactly what you need to do in order to help yourself Fed up of chunks thins poor wedge play struggling with your short game being at the side of the green two walking off with the six In this video here are my three favorite drills to help you out with your chipping So if we’re struggling with chip shots generally what’s happening is we are not striking it very well It’s not the distance control We’re not hitting them too hard generally you’re struggling to get the ball first ground second consistently time after time So what we need to do to try and get all of those things in a really good place we have to have the weight on the front foot We have to have a really good setup And we also need to make sure that we’re taking this club back in a consistent manner So number one what I want you to try and do to get a really consistent setup What we quite often see with people who are struggling with chip shots is a ball position that’s too far forwards weight that’s on the back foot shoulders that aren’t level quite a lot of tilt to the right and with that you’re just going to get to the bottom of your swing too soon potentially hit the ground first potentially have your club head swing up and that’s when you’re going to struggle with those strikes So one of the best drills to get this in a really good place is to go cross-handed left hand low kackhanded Matt Fitzpatrick whatever you want to call it Swap your hands around That’s going to give you a few things It’s going to teach you quite a lot of things It’s going to get your shoulders way more level It’s going to get your spine angle more neutral and not away from the target And that alone will start to get more weight left It will also help you with your release For chip shots we don’t want too much wrists involved It’s very much a pendulum action We don’t want to be scooping and flicking and adding loft So with the left hand low drill the Matt Fitzpatrick we get a lot of the fuel that we need That’s not to say that you have to do this Definitely going to improve your strike You can do this if you really really like it for low shots anything inside sort of 20 30 yards where you don’t necessarily have to hit it high But as a drill it will teach you so many good things So set up to the golf ball We’re going to go ball position middle to slightly right of middle Left hand low shoulders level You probably feel that you’re tipping towards the target more But also what you’re going to feel you are not going to be using these wrists anywhere near as much which for a chip shot is really really important Let’s get that set up perfect We want the ball positioned middle to slightly right of center We’re going left hand low for the drill That’s going to teach us how to have level shoulders a neutral spine not a lot of spine tilt a nice T-shape Finish We’re going to finish with the club head very much below the hands We’re not going to be scooping and flicking and thinning and chunking So left hand low ball position just right of center shoulders are level club head finishes low ball first divot second Time and time again So if you’re brand new to the channel please do click that big red subscribe button It really helps out the channel and you’ll also be one of the first people to see the new golf tips that come out every single week If you’re a current subscriber huge thanks Comment down below what you want to see What do you need help with and we’ll make sure that help gets out there to help you So drill number two One of the most common things that people do when they chip and pitch and hit bunker shots is they start with too much weight on the back foot and they move too much weight onto the back foot Whether that’s through a huge sway in the back swing or whether that’s how they think about getting the ball up in the air They might think that we have to lean back and scoop up but actually that leads to the bottom of the swing being before the ball and that encourages thins and chunks So a really simple drill that you can do so simple so effective I even know a lot of my students that just do this on the golf course either in their pre-shot routine or they just chip like this cuz it’s so effective So all you need to do is just set up to the golf ball and what you’re going to do is you’re going to lift your right foot place your big toe in the ground so you’ve got the outside of your right foot you’ve got the heel of the right foot off the ground That puts lots of weight left and we’re also going to keep it there If you shifted off the ball that right foot might replant itself We don’t want that If you were trying to help the ball up in the air again it would replant itself We don’t want that to happen So right heel off the ground outside of right foot off the ground weight stays left throughout the whole motion so simple so effective and it’s going to help you get ball first more spin the same loft good strikes lots of good stuff that’s going to come from that So again from this angle what you want to do because we’ve had that good setup from drill number one So we’ve got the level shoulders we’ve got the ball position right of center We want to make sure we do that first just right of middle shoulders level not crazy tilt to the right Lift that right foot off the ground Keep that weight very much on the left side Best chippers and pitchers stay left and even move left and then stay tall through impact So moving left staying tall and that’s going to make such a big difference Arguably that could be drill number one for chipping but the first one’s so good because it gets your setup good It gets the perfect release with the club head under the hands So it was a very very close one and two And then drill number three you know what All three could be number one They’re all so good You get so many good things from all these drills And that’s why they’ve made the top three short game drills After giving thousands of short game lessons one of the most common things that people struggle with in short game is the club head moving way on the inside getting really really flat getting to the bottom of the swing too soon Fats thins shanks lots of stuff can start to come from that So what I want you to try and do this is a bit of a twoin one really is get the club head traveling up this alignment stick up in front of the hands Particularly with chipping it shouldn’t really go behind the hands We don’t want it to go excessively inwards So we want that club head to travel up And this is a good drill We can keep the club head moving up the stick and hit the shot But the next part is really the main part that’s really going to help you out So using an alignment stick or a club just down on the floor is such a really good guide as to where that club head is traveling which is so so important if you want to get ball first and consistent contact around the green The main drill and this is what I want you to try and do is once you’ve set up to the golf ball is place probably around about a 70° angle so 2:00 something like that When you’re looking down is place an alignment stick in the floor quite upright We can even try and match the angle of the club If you were to move on the inside we hit this stick That would be a no no for chipping That would also be a no for pitching That is going to get us in some trouble Keep the club head working up and in front down and in front And the strikes are going to dramatically change So we’ve got this 12 1 2 maybe quite close to 3:00 2 to 3:00 And we’re going to miss that stick on the way back and on the way down And it’s so so simple so so visual and it’ll give you a lot of the right feels that you need to get that club head working in front And as you can see in the videos there’s so many pros that do this The best wedge players in the world stay left The best wedge players in the world keep the club head in front of the hands The best wedge players in the world keep their height or gain height through impact So if we can copy that and there’s absolutely no reason why you can’t do this We might not be able to hit the 350 yard drive but we definitely can have a good technique that’s going to help us around the green So let’s get your chipping so good you’re going to get up and down more take pressure off your long game and really start to get that handicap down So these are the three best drills If there’s a drill that’s worked better for you
