nbc sports along with the ladies professional golf association and the pga of america welcome you to the kpmg women’s pga championship you’re watching fed groups presented by kpmg and t-mobile for business [Music] a long windy wearing week comes to this and our featured group today you get the korean somi lee in her second year on the lpga tour the big hitting fidian austin kim and charlie hall one of the best players in the world without a major championship grant boon judy rankin jerina mendoza with you somi joined the tour last year judy she’s a consistent performer and last year last week or uh yesterday last evening i should say three straight bogeies to finish her third round it left her reeling as this week has so many well as we go forward and look at austin kim i can tell you that yesterday was a very very difficult day with the wind blowing um it said gust to 30 but it blew close to 30 an awful lot yesterday and it was a really difficult day to score and i think you it would wouldn’t have been too hard to get a little worn out along the way and if you’d have told charlie hull she’d be playing in a featured group on sunday on thursday evening not sure she would have believed you shot 78 in the opening round came back with the best round of the day on friday a 69 and charlie looks to make the biggest of moves today there’s the challenge mi lee a two-time major winner out in front with a four-shot lead at minus six so glad to have you with us all week and now today for this final round of the kpmg women’s pga championship grant boon alongside the lpga hall of fame member judy rankin judy it has been a long week for us our team but even longer for these players who’ve been battling fields ranch east and the elements yeah and the element the element has been the wind um it has made it most difficult to play this golf course that’s just a fraction over 6,600 yards this week um a a a relatively new golf course in the north dallas uh frisco area just here now a few years it was a beautiful expansive uh piece of way back when i guess ranch land oh yeah and um uh gil hance has turned it into a a a golf course that is can i say challenging and when the wind putting it mildly when when the wind blows you are not only challenged by the golf course but you’re challenged by yourself because it’s just so hard uh not to lose your patience then uh one thing about any element in golf whether it’s wind rain whatever um once you lose your concentration once you get off track in really tough conditions it’s so hard to recover that and you saw players yesterday um i think who did a magnificent job of staying in the game every shot for 18 holes and uh they were being buffeted the entire day either either working to stand up straight or working just to stand up well the long week for us of course has been a joy we get to watch these great players really tested to the limit for these players it has been a survival test and now the challenge for these as you saw with that leaderboard mean out in front at six underpart could they make the kind of move it would take an historic move no one’s ever come from more than seven shots back entering the final round of a women’s major championship to win but uh these players have a way of making history and who knows maybe it will be today from our featured group dawn newar is our first announcer let’s send it down good morning and welcome to the 71st kpmg women’s pga championship this is the 10:06 starting time now on the tea please welcome from the republic of korea somi lee [Applause] this first hole judy has proven to be not the gentle handshake that we talk about sometimes with uh an inviting opening hole it’s been the slap in the face yeah slap in the face par five right into the wind you can see there uh on your left the scorecard 526 yds uh you are trying to find fairway grass bunkers to the right the rough uh seemingly not that awful looking until you see a golf ball welcome austin kim [Applause] and now austin kim second year on the lpga tour played collegiately for vanderbilt and we’re going to get a chance today to see one of the most powerful swings in all of women’s golf you can almost always tell who started golf as a child when they have that interlocking grip and you could see it there from austin kim you did a double take at her driving average this week every player in this threesome is very long [Music] austin kim the longest and we’ll get to that 285 this week just like you used to do it rip it right down the middle well here comes charlie she kind of lives life at 1.5x speed even the recoil from her swing watch this that time she kind of was nice and calm there’s that uh not mean looking rough but boy do you get some mean looking lies in it let’s take a look at our course description here brought to you by the golf course superintendent association of america fields ranch east at pga frisco uh yeah par 72 3735 three par fives on the front nine 6600 yards plus a few gil hance took a raw piece of land and uh built this beauty that north bridge bermuda grass has turned out to be difficult in the rough perfect from the fairways and the greens are absolutely pristine um as far as conditioning you couldn’t ask for anything more than what you have this week and roger meyer and his staff um have done really a beautiful job and not only roger meer and his staff but all the volunteers that come in to help um a large staff on an event like this well we’ve all on our team been on the air for a long time but no one’s been out there in the elements more than jireina mendoza one more time jarina good morning good morning grant good morning judy um another blustery uh morning out here this morning i think i woke up and i was saw 77 and i was thinking “oh cold fronts coming in.” and i just checked it and the real feel is almost 100° already um this is championship sunday we’re all excited about today i’m especially excited to watch these three girls somi lee charlie hull and austin kim the big powerful hitters and we’ll get to see how they navigate this rough and this very very difficult golf course today j great job by you and our team out there on the ground all week long she still has the same toughness as when she was a player she yeah it’s a player who won a soulheim cup for the united states with one of the most clutch putts you’ll ever see there in germany and charlie was on that team they’re on speaking terms now so it’s okay they’re good so there you go somi leave austin kim begin the day nine shots back charlie starts 10 shots back but uh when you consider that second place judy is two under it really does kind of hearken back to what you said about gino titon entering the weekend mi really is in control of this thing is yeah how how this tournament goes today is how miy lee goes today because she has built quite a nice lead uh she played just a awfully solid round yesterday um you’re seeing breeze this morning but let me tell you this is not even close to what it was yesterday morning at this time right here is the second for somi lee [Music] done well the strategic layup is what we’ve been talking about here at fields ranch east it has put so many players in bad spots when they haven’t been able to hit their second shot on these par fives in the right place and charlie’s coming from the rough jarina have you seen her lie yeah grant it’s actually a pretty pretty decent lie she has iron out so she has opted not to use woods as most girls have this morning definitely see she’s gonna stay left of this the right side of the fairway [Music] fairway [Music] at least gives you a shot and now austin kim these players have already looked at the hole location which is very deep in this green today way back in this green 25 paces so uh if you can control right left whichever is best uh you’re trying to do that with this shot [Music] all right three good t- shots three good layups thirds to this par five first in a moment at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference when i grow up i want to make a difference easy you can do it i want to inspire someone i want to find my place in the world when i grew up i became a pg of america golf professional and it all came true pga of america golf professionals we love this game what golfers experience is pga of america’s gamechanging technology what makes it possible 5g advanced network solutions from t-mobile for business from coaches using ai analytics to players using ar data to find the best path to the cup t-mobile helps pga of america reliably connect with 5g from the course to the clubhouse pga of america goes further with t-mobile for business oh sorry [Music] the 2025 kpmg women’s pga championship featured group coverage is brought to you by kpmg and by t-mobile for business exclusive 5g solutions partner of the kpmg women’s pga championship final round of the third major of 2025 two more championship next month and then the aig women’s open at royal pall in wales third shot for charlie hall at the first yeah she has 125 to the pin this is a nine iron she doesn’t want to keep this left of this whole location all right so me lee is ready for her third [Music] somi has 119 to this whole location i would say this pin today is much more accessible than the last few days [Music] that’s a very very good shot she’s got it uh you know within that what appears to me to be that 10-ft circle [Music] and now austin kemp austin has 108 to the flag and judy maybe you can answer this but i feel like when it’s this windy i much rather have like a pitching wedge or nine iron instead of a a wedge having to have to fight flight it down so much to keep it underneath this wind yeah um she did a really good job there uh i the wind has certainly uh been at a velocity where you you you can’t disregard it you really have to uh work with the wind and play the right shot at the right time incredible third from austin kim this almost goes in [Music] it did dip a little bit didn’t it well she was slowed yesterday by a couple of double bogeies including at the tiny 17th but um continues to battle and in her second year on the lpga tour she has put herself in position on some sundays to win hasn’t won yet on the lpga tour but a player who is still very much coming into her own after an outstanding collegiate career at vandy you need to anchor down that’s their that’s their rallying cry at vandy on a week like this with the wind blowing 35 anchor down is a good idea so she’ll have that for birdie you know in the professional game you better learn how to play in all kinds of conditions because you will you’re going to be challenged um at some point with everything that can go on um from mother nature uh in this game so you might as well learn to be a good win player you might as well learn to figure out how i’m going to play you know when it’s raining and we’re still playing golf uh all those things are part of how you build a career sometimes you get it all in one week you can get it all you you can get it all in one day we’re in texas you could get it here couldn’t you that’s true we have had as we discussed yesterday reasonably similar conditions all four days and and these players are learning fields ranch east jina did you find that um on a week like this with the intensity a and the just the drain of playing in this heat was were you still able to acrewue enough information that by the time you got to sunday you you felt like you had a better game plan than you did when you started the week yeah 100% i think each and every day you learn something more about the golf course and how to attack it and what’s the best game plan come sunday to try to raise that trophy [Music] charlie for birdie [Music] boy that was great camera work you could see the smoothness of these greens now player players talk a lot about uh this particular form of bermuda and there’s grain in the green in the greens but there always is grain in bermuda greens to some degree uh we like to think grain wants to grow toward the west toward the setting sun uh that’s one way you can try to read it some people see grain quite easily some people struggle to see grain now here is somi for birdie grant judy this is another one of those putts that in a normal week non- major championship week this would be green light this is a very tough putt yeah she played a lot of break perfectly she is a really good putter she she really has no weaknesses last year on the lpga tour she was 71st on the points list easily kept her card as a rookie and that’s a great way to start we only saw three birdies on the first hole yesterday three it was the hardest hole on the course there were more double bogeies and worse than birdies i don’t know how to speak to it but it was a monster par five yesterday uh and um certainly not simple today but manageable so somi moves into a tie for sixth now here’s austin kim for birdie i’m not seeing much movement in this putt this is definitely the side of the hole you want to miss it on [Music] well we almost had as many birdies in our featured group that they had all day yesterday for the 78 who made the cut that’s a great start for both of those who were plus three coming into this final round and now both are tied for sixth [Music] judy charlie is a very aggressive player but we saw with that putt from that side of the hole how careful even she was evidence of what you were saying about the perfection and the speed of the greens i’m not sure i like the flag stick in with the wind whipping she does it all the time and none of us can quite understand it but trying to understand charlie is a bit of a fool’s errand she is very much her own person and she is an absolute superstar in the game and one of the great characters and a delight to watch which we are in our featured group today what golfers experience is pga of america’s gamechanging technology what makes it possible 5g advanced network solutions from t-mobile for business from coaches using ai analytics to players using ar data to find the best path to the cup t-mobile helps pga of america reliably connect with 5g from the course to the clubhouse pga of america goes further with t-mobile for business when i grow up i want to make a difference easy you can do it i want to inspire someone i want to find my place in the world when i grew up i became a pg of america golf professional and it all came true pg of america golf professionals we love this game at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference [Music] what happened [Music] yes ma’am all [Music] [Music] right a couple of birdies in our featured group taking somi lee and austin kim to two overpar bit of a wait that’s been one of the themes of the week on this difficult golf course in brutal conditions so judy let’s take a look at the second yeah it’s a it’s a par4 and you see bunkers um out there in the driving area they’re staggered on the right side and on the left side um to the left hand bunker it’s approximately 250 yards but uh you’re trying to find that generous fairway to the right of that bunker and then you play straight uphill although the entire hole is gently uphill but really severely uphill uh to this well bunkered green at the second 383 yds today the whole location at the second is 31 paces deep in the green and bear in mind you are still going in the same direction with the wind in your face [Music] as they have all week same wind direction and uh varying intensity but it has been really really blustery for a lot of this tournament driving distance judy you were talking about this austin kim she is a big hitter and and keep in mind a lot of these t-shots are straight into the teeth of the wind so these statistics are from this windy golf course this week on the lpga tour statistically she is huge off the tea at 285 yards uh those are in um you know varied conditions um into the wind downwind uh they try to make all things as equal as possible um and over a long period of time and at 285 she’s third in driving distance it’s a slightly different game i was going to talk a little bit about women and driving okay well we’ve got time here so if i may yeah go for it um i’m going to tell you that quite a lot of years ago women weren’t taught to hit the ball hard women were taught to swing the club more well um girls boys they would say you know hit it as hard as you can and then we’ll we’ll figure out how we can correct it you know now they take all beginning golfers and say you know let’s get some speed in your golf swing let’s see how far you can hit this ball and you know what it turned out a lot of these athletic young women can hit it a long long way so me lee off the tea here so on the lpga tour she averages 267 um and she’s the slouch in this group slouch yeah and and she’s still well above average tell me what you notice what impresses you about this powerful swing of austin kim who would love to do better on this second hole than she’s done as you see this week well first of all she looks like one of the fittest americans in the field i think [Music] you know some people just have the knack for generating speed uh mechanically she sets the club really nice at the top uh she doesn’t look like she’s jumping out of her shoes uh you love that about a player who hits it a long way you know i think you you know in speaking about distance you try to tell young guys you know swing as hard as you can but keep your balance charlie on the other hand does look like she’s swinging hard this is fast quick everything you can think of tie those shoes tightly here we go [Music] [Applause] she’s a sensation on both sides of the pond i mean charlie hull is a favorite with the british media which loves a good character don’t they and here in the us of course she’s won a couple of times including here in the dallas fort worth area back in october of 2022 so here’s another look here here’s austin and carries her hands quite low lets her arms kind of in that hanging position at a dress gets the club high over her right shoulder um that’s a beautiful position at the top so now she has already started to transition her weight back to her left side that’s the move you’re seeing and that is the beginning of the change of directions of the down swing she stays in the shot look the ball’s gone she’s still in her posture in the shot nice high finish and i would say a full finish and now charlie similar setup you have to do charlie in slow motion because you can’t speak at regular time same kind of look not hands aren’t quite as high at the top but she’s going to make that move to her left side right there that gets her hips out of the way so she can swing down that target line look at her in perfect position if you had another view face on you would see that her head is behind the ball and the impact area and she’ll get full extension through the shot nice high finish i played a long time ago i still love the high finish mhm charlie’s a good driver it’s a classic look isn’t it yep [Music] and so you see you’ve got three above average drivers and going straight uphill and into the wind takes a lot of the st so 252 straight into the wind and uphill that is a a mammoth t-shot from from austin kemp yes it is yes it is uh who hits the most fairways of these three big hitters somi lee [Music] okay so second’s coming up our featured group somi is a prolific winner on the kpga five wins on that tour went to q school at the end of 2023 finished second and had a really nice rookie season finished fifth in portland got herself up onto the top of the leaderboard multiple times had some leads at the end of a round and as a rookie judy uh keeping your card and austin kim has spoken about this she has to remind herself i’ve done something pretty special if i’ve a made it to the lpga tour and b kept my card well we always talk about the prolific winners the nelly cordets of the world but the tour is made up of a roughly a couple of hundred players that’s that idea that um you don’t want to be cocky but you need to play cocky internally and so i think that i think that speaks to a player who um outwardly really appreciates the opportunity she’s had to get this far and to keep her card and yet you know internally she thinks i’m good enough to win out here i i think i i i think characteristically uh that’s how you that’s how you like your favorite athletes to be believe internally that you’re up to the task all right while they wait we remind you that you can join the more than 30,000 pga of america golf professionals and work in the game you love go to pga taught uh pga.com/workinandgolf to start your journey in the game [Music] going in threes as you’ve noticed already here and going off of both one and 10 which is an an acknowledgment by the pga of america that uh these rounds are going to take a long time as they have all week planning on a 6-hour round essentially it’s a long playing golf course uh because numerous walks from greens to te’s are a long way she didn’t like it jerina yeah that’s his top he’s part of it yeah she had a five iron in her hand and i think with that whole location tucked on the right you’re going to see a lot of the players air more towards the fat part of the green and that utilize that slope but if you get a little too sloppy you’re going to be faced with that bunker and a long difficult bunker shot for your third all right how about charlie charlie has 144 to the pin yeah i like it coming down and uh there’s about 10 8 to 10 yards elevation added on to that so we’ll play that about 154 and that’s not including the wind [Music] the ball this is a sixiron so this whole location cut on the right is probably not her favorite to look at from the fairway middle of the green looks like a great shot if it’s enough club [Music] well it’s pretty close to enough club and uh a very good shot straight up that hill so jireina you’re out there i don’t think we’re overstating it to to say what a big t-shot this was from austin i’m not sure where it finished but it was left okay couple of bunker shots coming up for our featured group just underway on this sunday in frisco [Music] at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference when i grow up i want to make a difference easy you can do it i want to inspire someone i want to find my place in the world when i grew up i became a pg of america golf professional and it all came true pg of america golf professionals we love this game what golfers experience is pga of america’s gamechanging technology what makes it possible 5g advanced network solutions from t-mobile for business from coaches using ai analytics to players using ar data to find the best path to the cup t-mobile helps pga of america reliably connect with 5g from the course to the clubhouse pga of america goes further with t-mobile for business look him up i’ll look it up right now yeah i don’t it’s sackler you got to find out no no no no no you don’t look it up by height [Music] that’s smart all right a bunker shot for somi lee at the second jarina i beg you pardon jarina’s uh are you back jina i’m back i’m back and uh she was faced with a little downs slope um that you can clearly see it got a little hot and ran away from her austin here however has a is in a little of a predicament with her why um it’s close to the the lip and her stance i’m not sure if she’s gonna be able to take a traditional bunker stance it’s going to be a little funky green runs away from her she’s going to be able to green runs away from her she’s going to be able to just kind of throw this on the green and and utilize the slope and the grain so for the viewers jireina that early part of the green that looks dark that’s into the grain and when it changes it’s downgrained so that’s why it gets quicker as it gets nearer to the hole yeah as you can see she’s got one foot in one foot out and that was really really good we just got a gust of wind what a good shot what a what a good shot though you just it can hardly be done better [Music] she’s an athlete and you can tell comes from an athletic family sister august an epson tour player one more look here [Music] one of the difficulties with that shot is you’re not in a position to make a a traditional bunker stroke and put a lot of spin on the ball so uh that’s why i say she played it about as well as she could that’s a par attempts coming up for austin kim and somi lee who made birdie at the first charlie hull made par at the first and now has this for birdie at the second yeah she did an awesome shot from the fairway only has about 15 ft left should go left to right it’s going to be fast when it takes the turn to the right she’s been a world class player for better part of a decade but this club has let her down in the last year or so she makes a million of these in in soulheim cups and she’s a proven winner on both the le and the lpga but um trying to get that putter to cooperate because she’s one of the best ball hitters in the world what about the challenge here jireina we’re looking at where the third shot of somi lee came to rest up against that collar yeah it is nestled right up against it and she’s opted to use her putter these are always pretty difficult as you’re going to catch the top half of the ball it’s going to bobble and hopefully get enough run out of it she did not now between uh that aggravation and then the fairway cut of the fringe grass not good is this one judy that you might think about bellying a wedge uh you might she held the putter as you said she hovered it um i suggest that you get the ball a little farther back in your stance than you normally would putting um which i think would have helped the ball would have still bounced that little bit no doubt but maybe you get a little more solid hit on it and you don’t just hit the upper part of the ball with the bottom of the club that wasn’t solid that wasn’t solid no charlie i told you she’s fast she’s on her way to three we got a par putt for a hust chem to come some players will do that if they feel like the players they’re playing with um are a little bit slow i haven’t seen that yet today i mean i’m not making that statement but um charlie’s taking a break there have been plenty of those this week so here’s austin kim this is to back up the birdie with a par [Music] 10 ft right to left how about this start for austin kim nice putt you just never know i mean it’s it’s not likely she’s still eight shots back but she’s four shots out of second and then a tie for sixth so mi lee who will get it going here at 10:50 local time about 7 minutes from now in ji will have the tournament in her hands so me now for bogey she got six feet up the hill right to left [Music] [Music] birdie double for somi lee and away they go to the par five third par five third with bunkers up the left you could see that the fairway turns in the driving area around those bunkers 501 yds once again into the wind and gently uphill um all the way a little more severely uphill when you get to uh where the second shot lands where the layup lands and where you play that third shot at this par five from uh the bunker on the left generally has uh not been a factor this week it’s too well actually it’s the bunker on the left is is quite reachable even into the wind uh the layup is what’s tricky you can see the bunkers uh short and right of the green you can see the big bunker to the left side the layup is very tricky and the whole location today at the third is tucked on the right side getting [Music] ready for t-shots here at the third you’re watching featured groups presented by kpmg and t-mobile for business here at the kpmg women’s pga championship final round final group getting ready to tee off our featured group includes austin kim a birdie and a couple of pars and a good t-shot yeah perfect wide ride of those bunkers um i don’t think this hole is reachable for anyone into the wind but maybe i should just hide and watch if anyone could do it it would be austin kim same distance effectively as the last three days little over 500 yards now charlie quickly you know she liked it yeah yeah i’m over here i’m like okay and so charlie an above average length hitter couldn’t even see austin kim’s t-shot in that shot somi has made par all three days which means she’s gained ground on the field this is one of those par fives that’s played over par boy that last hole was a tough one for her she wants to try to make it up and when you’re chasing you can ill afford a mistake like that can you really good start for austin kim a birdie at the first and a nice bunker save at the second she’s tied for sixth [Music] what golfers experience is pga of america’s gamechanging technology what makes it possible 5g advanced network solutions from t-mobile for business from coaches using ai analytics to players using ar data to find the best path to the cup t-mobile helps pga of america reliably connect with 5g from the course to the clubhouse pga of america goes further with t-mobile for business when i grow up i want to make a difference easy you can do it i want to inspire someone i want to find my place in the world when i grew up i became a pg of america golf professional and it all came true pj of america golf professionals we love this game at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference [Music] [Music] a legacy 75 years in the making and just getting started the lpga got to visit with craig kesler the incoming commissioner this morning judy really enjoyable um a young man with uh new fresh ideas and uh i think everyone across the board is excited none more than craig himself this is our featured group for the final round austin kim waiting as she often does she’s usually the last to hit somi lee after the double bogey her second at the par five yeah they’re just looking at looking to lay up um to about 100 to the front or so the widest part of the fairway and uh once again they’ve said this all week that we are laying up with woods on par fives which is probably not very common for this group well that one found a safe place [Music] and avoided that divot hole that appeared and how about austin yeah austin has 254 to the hole which that would give her 250 to the front i’m curious to why she’s doesn’t want to hit something down there she has iron and handle up it does play about 8 to 9 yards uphill [Music] well we’ve been tracking the win probability all week with our kpmg insights it was gino titiken when the week began and at one point what was she 60 some odd percent to win now it’s miy lee up by four 74% gino all the way down to 20% what do you think judy well i know that i said on friday it’s a long way to sunday night yeah it’s getting shorter now when it is getting shorter but when gino looked uh um win probability was looking like a lock for her um golf uh as different commentators have said is a funny old game and uh predictions if predictions um how would i say this if predictions were like that were true on a friday be a lot of wealthy gamblers true yeah well here’s what we’ve witnessed through the years in both the women’s and the men’s games four shot leads which every single player in the field would love to have going into a sunday is never quite as easy as it seems is it it’s hard to play with that big lead because now you’re not just trying to win you’re expected to win and uh by a lot of people including yourself uh so uh it’s it’s you you cannot play safe you you can’t just say i’m if i can put it on cruise control and i can win this thing today because you can’t well no one knows better than miley lee because when you look at her two major wins one was from seven shots back and another was from three shots ahead so she’s done both things yeah that that that’s really good information um grant and um you’re my information man that’s that’s true but that is excellent information and it speaks a lot to what could happen today uh but the one thing you do know when you have a four-shot lead is the tournament is in your hands um it is pretty difficult for anybody to catch you if you play well to your point as we get ready for thirds here the lowest score this week is 68 right it’s happened a couple of times right she leads by four if she shoots even par someone’s going to have to shoot the best round of the week only one person’s even within four that’s gino so if menchi shoots even par she’s going to make gino match the best score of the week to even get into a playoff and and we know that even par uh given the win condition is a pretty darn good round of golf you’re going straight up the leaderboard if um you’re posting 72 okay three here so making your life a little easier dina trying to get a yardage yeah this is great um about 81 yards this whole location they they definitely like this whole location for this week it’s been over here three of the four days and uh she wants to fly this at the pin and hopefully get it to back up and that is a great shot flip it we have austin at 80 yards and for those viewers at home you can see that you know obviously all the players are looking to land or lay up in the about the same area they’ve mapped the golf course and this is they feel like their best chance at uh getting one close [Music] really surprised that she didn’t take this past the pin and bring it back with her ability to spin the ball yeah i agree with you jireina she’s lucky that it didn’t uh spin back over that next little ridge that we could actually see but jarina talked about game plan and apparently her game plan was to make this a three-sh shot hole [Music] so me now somi was 79 yards wind is still a steady i would say 15 [Music] she looked down at her divot like she might have hit it that ever so um slightly heavy uh the way she reacted i would think she was trying to fly it just beyond the hole and didn’t pull it off she said after her second round that i made some mistakes but i made enough birdies to recover and this weekend i’m going to try not to panic that that uh can be easier said than done in these conditions on this exacting golf course take another look here we can see a g it almost looked like a gust happened right as she hit the ball yeah that maybe maybe a little heavy maybe a little bit of a deep divot um either one would have uh changed the distance she hit the shot by six seven yards [Music] birdie putts for all three here [Music] somi was in contention last week had the a share of the lead at the meer lpga classic in the grand rapids michigan area carlos saganda went on to win it so she’s been there late on sundays a few times now in a year and a half on tour believe austin’s going to be first here jina yes i believe so her caddy right now is indicating to her which way the grain is going up at the hole um from my view it looks like at the start could move to her left and then at the hole could might want to fall back to her right the dreaded double breaker [Music] brendan woolly veteran caddy out there he’s seen a thing or two in his day so when you’re negotiating something like a double breaker you try to you try to factor in the fact that uh the first break the ball is going to be rolling with a little bit more authority the second break the ball is starting to lose speed um so if you want to get real complicated um in your head that’s what’s going to happen mostly your eyes are sending a little message because of what you see for distance for slope and then you feel it [Music] that was always going to be a tough one to get just right wasn’t it birdie par par top 10 by the way at the end of the day get into next year’s kpmg women’s pga championship at hazeline and for players like charlie hall who are high in the rolex rankings that usually is never an issue but usually not an issue and um you know for a young player like austin game go ahead and punch that ticket to next year’s major sooner you qualify the better here’s somi for a bounceback birdie yeah she has a similar putt to austin here just going to be a matter of how much she plays that first break awesome awesome read birdie double birdie judy great putt great putt and uh uh something uh really quickly lifts your spirits it gets you going again she didn’t panic like she said more power to her i think all of us golfers have that panic button right on our hip just in case i tell you a great interview with adam scott last week at the us open when uh he talked about how difficult the course was and that it’s just so hard that you almost you know want to blow your brains out and i think cara banks it was who said did you get to that point and he said no but i was loading the gun charlie for birdie oh shoot she hit a good putt [Music] couple of good looks at two and three just missed [Music] i think she’s stroking the ball well i do think there have been pretty decent reads uh just think uh stay patient charlie hall you might make some putts still in search of that first major championship she’s come close multiple times in multiple majors next year it’s off to hazeline in caska minnesota for the 2026 kpmg women’s pga championship we’ll see you there [Music] [Music] at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference when i grow up i want to make a difference easy you can do it i want to inspire someone i want to find my place in there are more than 30,000 pga of america golf professionals we love this game and this is their home moving from south florida here to north texas frisco about 30 mi north of dallas featured groups presented by kpmg and t-mobile for business grant boon judy rankin jireina mendoza and our entire team of women and men bringing you some bonus coverage here from this third major of the season austin kim at two overpar is tied for sixth and somi lee bouncing back from a double bogey for the birdie at the third they’re headed to the fourth where yesterday the veteran from southern california the ucla bruin brianna doe did this at the part three player didn’t even get into this championship until a couple of weeks ago because of a great finish in mexico oh vamos so brianna with the ace and is continuing to play great she’s two under today and she’s tied for ninth so that that week in mexico for brianna was a career changer and for austin trying to brave the heat and the wind she’s waiting at the fourth is it any easier judy the waiting when you go into a round knowing it’s going to happen you’re prep you have to be at least aware that that’s going to be the case well you’ve prepared yourself mentally um there’s going to be a break here and there this is the earliest one we’ve seen on the golf course this week it’s mostly uh been around the seventh hole which is a reachable par4 with a favorable wind and um and the par 3es so um this is not a good sign early in the day or it’s it means someone up ahead has had some pretty serious trouble rulings and so on and again they are playing in i mean it it’s obvious here but just a reminder yesterday they played in twos still took six hours so they’re playing in threes today and the pga of america is banking on them playing 6 hours today as evidenced by the tea times or close to it future events at fields ranch at pga frisco at the pga junior league championship over on the west course pga professional championship has been here before will be again we’ll be back here for the kpmg women’s pga in 2031 pga championship comes here a couple of times in the next decade and the senior pga championship in 2029 it was here in 2023 it hadn’t even opened to the public it opened for one of the pg tour champions majors and on this fourth hole we saw brianna doe another ucla bruin had a rather memorable moment yeah cory paven with a very distinct golf swing he uses the slope of this green big slope from the right to the left and bang [Music] great that was not the shot of his life as johnny miller called his second at shinikok when he won the us open back in 1995 but it was a good one could we ask somi a question she’s right next to the microphone q&a with so me she’s thinking about it maybe a little curious let’s go i love it what’s what’s the song for the day jina the wind they call maria go away i don’t know we had mariah stack house here that is right they call the wind mariah you’re right the wayward wind was a restless wind we’re really connecting with the young folks here who sang that song and the way we’re debbie uh folks you know i’m sitting i am sitting next to pat boon’s nephew who actually has the boone voice it’s he he can really uh sing a tune i should have known goi grant okay wayward there you go was a restless wind they’re getting restless in a long week long wait jina how how how does it feel out there similar in terms of the the heat and the humidity as the first three i’m assuming the heat is there the humidity is not too bad um at the moment didn’t think i’d ever say this but the wind isn’t that strong but it is still there it only feels like 92 at the moment uh keep in mind it’s just after 11 well in the distance you see a green that really slopes from the right to the left um and the hole is way left today so any kind of shot that goes maybe at the camera tower with a little draw is going to be fed down to where the hole location is um you might see another hole in one today well would you settle for a hole in two this was just seconds ago and this is the player from korea shinsil bang how about it so we’ve seen one we’ve seen two uh we’ve seen lots of others we’ll accept three we don’t want anything more than that okay where’s the car carrie carrie on this corner these two need their own show on peacock charlie hall and woody adam woodward adam woodward they’ve been together for a while and i’d watch just follow them around for a little while mic them up we have had some great great caddy player relationships friendships working relationships um and i know it’s it’s true throughout the professional game but uh some great great characters uh have um been in the ear of some really great players and you get to see some of those who are still out here 40 years later in some almost 50 john khen’s here gregor johnston it’s an addictive thing it it really is um greg johnson you speak of he caddies now for nasa oka but he spent years and years with julie ingster they are they are two best friends in life um even though you know they both have their own families their own kids in julie’s case their own grandkids now but um yeah great relationships uh with so many of these people and um um we’re also finding a lot of brainiac college graduates carrying the bag these days who help players to uh figure it all out [Music] the green is clear and somi lee off of the birdie has the honor somi has nine iron here this whole play is about five yards down hill in elevation jesus has gotten that just left of the tower roll up and stay i believe it hit just into that hill there’s a little there’s a little swale a little hollow um almost at the front center took some of the steam out of it too much still a good shot the lead from miy lee grows mi is now up by five and now austin kim good start to this final round with a birdie and a couple of pars yeah carrie just a fraction farther she’s going right at it will it stay right there a dreaded runoff but uh she at least stays on top charlie next and to keep the sunglasses from flying out that’ll happen about twice a twice a round [Music] this looks like it’s on a good line right at the tv tower should utilize that slope and push it to the left down towards the hole ball’s landing kind of softly surprised they’ve been watering the greens each night you wonder if they gave a little extra after just the extreme conditions exacerbated by the elements miley lee leading it by five in search of her third different major title [Music] is pga of america’s gamechanging technology what makes it possible 5g advanced network solutions from t-mobile for business from coaches using ai analytics to players using ar data to find the best path to the cup t-mobile helps pga of america reliably connect with 5g from the course to the clubhouse pga of america goes further with t-mobile for business when i grow up i want to make a difference easy you can do it i want to inspire someone i want to find my place in the world when i grew up i became a pg of america golf professional and it all came true pg of america golf professionals we love this game at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference [Music] [Music] yeah maybe a little the home of the pga of america pga frisco north of dallas the lone star flag flying along with the pga flags and the flag at four whipping austin kim behind this par three with her t-shot this is her second yeah not too difficult of a chip here i know i watched her right before she was about to chip with all the fellow aim pointers out there she was aim pointing her chip as much break as she was trying to play on that shot confident move and she’ll have that for par you know it’s all good but i i think with the aim point um the aim point um that you go through there’s too many people putting their feet too close around the hole and i don’t i i realize we don’t have we have very few metal spikes anymore and things like that but um in days gone by you would not have wanted to see so many people putting steps around the hole that were unnecessary am i the only person that said that well i i think uh i think you’re not alone there and there are some people you might want that to be the case less than other more than others so now somi lee for her third birdie in four holes right to left pretty quick putt especially after the hole definitely a defensive putt there good three getting her footing back after the double bogey at the second hole bogey was probably in the cards there given her second shot but not double so she’s even for the day minci lee continues to lead at six under jina you’ve known charlie a long time you’ve teeded up against her many times competed against her in soulheim cups it feels to me like a major championship is is going to happen for charlie at some point maybe more than one but um the search continues for charlie yeah i mean it’s just it’s inevitable that she will break through i mean we know that her flatstick has let her down but on the same aside when that flat stick gets hot it is hot i mean she just rock and rolls and you know put that flag in and she is not afraid to hit those putts aggressive well she hit this one a little too aggressively for uh uh for the downhill slope that she putted from right there and she has left herself boy work she wouldn’t want let me ask each of you having been there in huge moments and big events if you were in this group three over three over four over were you going into the day thinking i can win this thing or or were you thinking let me just shoot the lowest score i can shoot let me start with you judy i think that far back i would be thinking you know let’s shoot the best round that i’ve shot this week you know that that’s you know if it if it does some good great you know second and third aren’t aren’t the worst with a $12 million purse you’re not kidding goodie really nice comebacker jireina what are your thoughts i mean i wouldn’t say i’d be sitting at home thinking i’m going to go out tomorrow and win however as we’ve seen the scores from friday to saturday i know if i post an underground par it’s going to give the leaders something to look at coming down the stretch and when you think about the 18th hole especially judy if you’ve got a one-shot lead right now it’s big for mji i know but i’m not sure there is a lead too big with some of those holes coming down the stretch well you can play pretty good golf and uh bogey some of these holes you can hit a pretty good shot and uh pay a price that’s unexpected austin for par great save and she stays bogey free one under for the day she was even par yesterday except for two holes two double bogeies shot 76 [Music] as you can kind of see right here the the course begins to turn around when you get here judy to the par4 fifth 441 yards today this par4 and you can see all the trouble is down the right there’s rough to the left but no serious trouble and certainly no penalty area uh so you’re short of that uh big crossing of panther creek and you play to a green that is perched up well bunkered once again uh the early bunkers on this hole should not be a factor so just those two bunkers right and left today the whole location pretty much toward the center of the green not too far from where you’re seeing that flag stick in this picture [Music] as they get to the tea we want to let you know that pga works is shaping future leaders through fellowships college scholarships career exploration events and championship golf you can learn more at pgarach.org somi lee on the tea at the fifth did not go with driver [Music] and finds a very good position maybe a hybrid here for austin and you noted that on the first te very carefully putting that left hand on the grip [Music] so less than driver as this fairway takes that turn to the left i don’t know if you can see from camera but there is still a lot of fairway that these girls um could utilize however if they choose to maybe hit driver all the way to the end of the fairway which would leave them a shorter shot the angle to the green is definitely going to be more difficult where it brings the bunker and having to carry a bunker in carry a bunker on the left side of the green so i can definitely see why these girls are laying back opens up the the front of this green because we’ve seen in the past couple days how difficult this garden has been to to hold and they’re having to use the front of that green as a runup yeah great point jina if you’re down the fairway that was an iron from charlie hall and she doesn’t like it it’s completely fine [Music] austin kim bogey free through the first four holes one under and very carefully putting that hand on the grip sometimes this is somebody who’s made an really tiny grip change just move the up one hand or the other that left hand in this case incrementally to uh make a change at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference when i grow up i want to make a difference easy you can do it i want to inspire someone i want to find my place in the world when i grew up i became a pg of america golf professional and it all came true pg of america golf professionals we love this game what golfers experience is pga of america’s gamechanging technology what makes it possible 5g advanced network solutions from t-mobile for business from coaches using ai analytics to players using ar data to find the best path to the cup t-mobile helps pga of america reliably connect with 5g from the course to the clubhouse pga of america goes further with t-mobile for business [Music] [Music] [Music] right in the fairway at the fifth having a snack here at half 11 did you have a go-to snack judy not not really i i um i would i was a little stubborn i should have been eating and drinking more probably playing but it seemed to distract me um so uh playing golf just for fun and eating at the turn you know i would always say that that shot off the tenth tea was a lunch ball um didn’t like that so i tried to not uh not do that when i was playing competitively and uh of course bottles of water lord i’m sounding really old bottles of water weren’t available for us they had water on teas and you had the little paper cups and so on um but uh i’m not i’m not sure we were as wise about being hydrated and uh doing everything you can to keep your brain working on all cylinders mhm charlie has been very open in the last year or so about being diagnosed with adhd and and uh trying to get that under control and and that affects her as a golfer i don’t know if it’s hyperactive hdhd but um if it is maybe that’s why she swings so fast or she’ll talk about uh preferring actually golf courses that are narrower because it it tends to focus her better the wide open golf courses throw her off a little bit she likes the she likes the uh more focused target yeah i’m i’m certainly not an expert but i do have a family member um who suffers from that and it’s not a it’s not a matter of anything these people are missing it’s a matter of too much uh gets in there at one time and it’s uh it’s hard to focus but boy there are so many ways um to help people um to um perform well and all i mean look at this look at charlie um our friend karen stuppples um these are these are high performance people um in in multiple areas yeah golf and karen now one of the best broadcasters you’ll ever hear jerina what about a yardage here for charlie she’s a ways back isn’t she [Music] yes she is about 215 to the hole um i know that sounds like a long way but she is not looking at that number at all i’m guessing she’s probably going to play this 10 to 15 yards short of this green with this downwind club twirl steps back to admire it and off to the races oh it has it it has certainly dried out from when we arrived on wednesday yeah and jireina you noted we saw two terrific shots here from brooke and nelly and they landed at what 10 yards short of the green yeah at least austin has 202 to the hole but only 180 to the front and she is taking this green on and i’m not sure it’s going to stay well it’s okay but that’s what i’m talking about really excellent golf shots uh that you you just can’t you know control the outcome and i know you said judy that this has some lynx characteristics though there are many ways in which it’s not like lynx that is very much the way you’d play a shot isn’t it in in the uk yes it is certainly is and sometimes you get a good favorable kick and many times not so much so me yeah she has 196 as you can tell from what she has with the pin 196 she is hitting a sixiron i don’t think 196 is usually her sixiron so she is definitely going to be landing this well well short and allowing for it to run out yeah it landed um short certainly and it kind of killed it so uh given where it landed it should have been perfect but she’s got a lengthy putt well miy lee is trying to join this august group mickey wright four times a winner of this championship back in the days when it was known as the lpga championship nancy lopez all three of her majors were this one patty sheen won it three times julie inkster part of the career grand slam and anukica soren stam three straight years so many years it was in wilmington delaware there’s some good years there at dupont country club dupont country club that’s right now it goes to some of the great venues in the us and this is the first time hosted here at pga frisco we’re coming back i’m just thinking about miley lee she has a chance judy to become the fourth different aussie to win this championship we saw jan stevenson earlier this week on the property here jan was part of the the champions dinner take a look it’s mi now through two holes up by five kari webb and hannah green the other aussies yeah a little little update on jan stevenson she’s had some very difficult very very serious health problems and uh she’s really doing well she looked great uh when we got to see her here and um uh more power to her for all those people who um wonder about jan she’s doing great she’s makes her home in florida and um she’s starting to attend events again and so it’s great really the first 25 years of the lpga tour it was 99% an american group of players and then players like jan stevenson and sally little and some others began to come over choco haguchi won this championship from japan in 1977 and a lot of players from australia and that that eastern coast of australia around melbourne and so but mji lee is from perth way on the west side at mini lee and her brother minwi minw pga tour win right here in the state of texas and charlie trying to figure out a way to get up here somewhere around the hole with her third when you look at it from here it just doesn’t look all that difficult but now she has to factor in a fairly long distance and into the wind jireina yeah yeah judy that was exactly what i was looking at um not only that the grain is down grain and uh she’s definitely going to have to take that into account there of grain that is into so i’m i’m assuming she’s going to try to fly this over that so it doesn’t get caught up in there boy those are combating conditions threw it up quite high back into that wind [Music] and that’ll be for a fifth straight par to open amazing 78 in round one she was 119th on the leaderboard and then a 69 the low round of the day on friday i guess the putter really misbehaved in the first round nothing really went particularly her way that day but came back strong and was actually in 25th place by the time round two ended austin kim 7172 the first two days mentioned those two double bogeies leading to a 76 but at the moment she is now tied for fifth austin’s ball is just barely on the fringe and she’s going to be playing this about a cup or so left to right face of the same similar conditions as charlie back into the wind down grain [Music] it’s a good putt by this time yesterday we had a 68 on the board from grace kim which moved her from last place up into the top 11 and no scores posted today because they’ve gone off both te’s one and 10 here’s somi lee for birdie yeah grant this is one of those putts where the hole the green says left and the and the wind says right the wind one it usually does doesn’t it especially here yeah all right par putt here for charlie it’s been a couple of years now that you could leave the flax again going back i guess to 2019 jireina have you experimented with it leaving it in you know i haven’t um i’m a little old school and i think it might be a little bit of trauma from when i was in high school i puted out of anger with it and and and just cured a two-stroke penalty so ouch i think uh i think i’ll just keep it out well charlie stays clean with a card hey jireina i didn’t know that about you what i do know about jireina is she didn’t start as a golfer she started as a baseball player still had that game phase in golf yeah the gods yes from roswell new mexico of course the home of nancy lopez shout out to the gddard rockets that’s what we as golf fans know roswell for some know it for other things like area 51 but for me it’s nancy it’s jireina all right so me for par [Music] [Applause] remind people that we’re not known for just aliens we’re known for pretty good golf as well yes that’s right and so me has endured that double bogey couple of birdies some well-earned pars austin kim has this for par and charlie is going to go ahead and head up to the sixth struggled with three putts a bit last year [Music] nice we think about with powerful players it’s almost like in baseball big home run hitter can you hit the curve ball because you’re going to get it we know you can hit the fast ball can you hit the curve so big powerful young player can you control your wedges because you’re going to have a lot of them right more than more than some of the shorter hitters and can you can you put a score together those are big challenges for young players it seems like i have a young girl in my life right now who can really hit it and uh hasn’t completely uh gotten her hands around scoring tough mile’s making it look way easier than it is brooke henderson having a good day today there’s charlie in our coverage ronnie yen a former winner of this event back in 2023 lydia co the hall of fame member it’s great to watch her in our featured groups the first couple of days inji chun has won three different majors that’s what miy lee would have if she wins today hannah nordquist and lydia co also with three different majors there’s the us open champ maya stark lindy duncan has uh uh turned it around this year maybe not so much this week but this year for sure yeah she was in that five-way playoff at the first major championship of the year the chevron won by mau saigo anna bailots this time last sunday was not in this championship but when carla saganda won the meer lpga classic up in michigan and carlo already being exempt it allowed anna in and so she gets a cut made and some valuable cme points for the lpga season and some cash in this $12 million purse somi lee says it’s going right and right is where there are grass bunkers i’m not sure where that finished saw one bounce so i’m not sure if it hung up kind of on the top part of that grass bunker or not we’ll check it out and jireina we’ve talked about this all week this is a visually awkward t-shot and and we’re getting a good look at it here yeah it’s you definitely want to try to cut some yardage off of this hole just because this green is so diabolical and it has been all week you want to have a short wedge in your hand to create as much spin as you can to try to hold this green and that obviously brings in these grass bunkers and it is they’re very penal she seems to like it and should yeah the grass bunkers are deep much like many of the bunkers um here at fields ranch and uh it’s not that you cannot play a shot out of them but playing a shot to the green uh would appear to be most difficult it’s hard enough to get it anywhere near the hole on this sixth from the fairway charlie now i think with charlie’s length and austin’s length they might be able to take on more of these bunkers because of how much downwind it is [Music] well charlie has found rough on the left but we see a lot of golf ball that’s a good sign through this little native area between the tea and the fairway at the sixth final round of the kpmg women’s pga championship [Music] what golfers experience is pga of america’s gamechanging technology what makes it possible 5g the kpmg women’s pga championship follow the action with live streaming scoring extensive player highlights 3d shot tracking and more and judy give us an update have you downloaded it yet it’s the last day well uh tomorrow morning i’m really free ooh lee is not this is where her ball came to rest it is kind of on that bank of that grass bunker that app is amazing by the way it it shows you every single spot where these players are every single player not just the scores but so much more a great addition enhancing the uh viewer engagement and this guy to my left is a little bit appy but um he you know he in every way at dinner and as a result he’s a load of information yeah you kept going i thought you were going to stop with just a load no okay well the lie that we just saw with somi um is what we’re talking about with this um north bridge bermuda rough it is not all that long but it is as punishing as if it were very long because the ball sinks uh there’s something about that bermuda that will not support the golf ball and you get exactly that kind of lie yes let’s take a look here yeah really really tough this to me looks like a major championship predicament here yeah the motion looked like she wouldn’t try to put this on the green try to get it as far as the green surface um it’s it’s both the lie and a balance issue for uh making a full golf swing waiting for the green to clear [Music] somi has about 166 as you heard them talk about the light is brutal well below her feet not only that she has a huge bunker she has to contend with it’s between her and the green it’s come out high and has carried the bunker [Music] maybe short of those bunkers we’ll see greenside left bunker um i’m not quite sure she got a lot on it seemed like that’s the ball of charlie from the thick rough left of the fairway so managed to carry that cross bunker that is well short of the green and uh then it went uh just left so uh she actually would have with a little break here and there gotten to the green surface jarina we’re at nine birdies nine for the week here at the sixth that is just incredible i mean these players have shorter irons in austin had 132 and it’s just crazy that they have short irons and they’re not able to hit on the green and keep it on the green that feels like an accomplishment in its own right fairway and green at the sixth well she had a she had at least a wedge and it almost looks like it might have been a gap wedge all right while we have a moment what a delight to welcome the president of the pga of america don ray to our studio hi don it’s good to be here i’m sitting next to you guys you guys are uh you’re heroes for me i mean the way you talk about golf it’s so passionate well no one’s more passionate about the game than you are we had a chance to visit earlier this week this just feels a little different maybe it’s because we’re here at the home of the pga of america absolutely i mean it’s our campus you know i was on the board when we stood up on a hill looking down and going “that’s where the golf course is going to be.” and we’re like “really?” a hotel our home quarters everything and now to see a major championship here it’s just so exciting but yeah it warms my heart to know uh that this was the transformational place for us to move our home yeah uh we love it here and apparently a lot of people living in the surrounding area in the dallas area love it here uh you’ve you’ve built something that has something for everybody i think so i you know it was funny when we had the grand opening of this home quartarters building i felt like we were we moved into a new neighborhood everybody was bringing over pies and welcoming us to the neighborhood that’s texas yeah that was texas granted it was amazing but yeah you know when you look at that 2acre putting green and man on a friday or saturday night all the kids running around playing on that a lit golf course with 10 holes you know it’s basically 660 acres of ypj members love what they do men or women we just love seeing people enjoy the game and this is certainly a place for all levels can enjoy the game of golf i it seems like everybody involved with the pga now they just all have a smile on their face uh it’s a it’s a big grin um for everybody who’s actually working um but as you say there’s a passion everybody everybody loves what they do and love what they do here yeah you know when we came up with the slogan we love this game it was awesome but i also think that we love the people who love this game even more and you know when there’s 28 million people playing right now and and seeing how everybody’s starting to enjoy golf it’s not swing stance and score it’s hanging out with your friends and your family getting off the grid and you know building relationships with with everybody um i think that’s why we’re all so happy isn’t it funny that uh one of the really tough times in the us was were the couple of really serious covid years and how that grew the game of golf because everybody could kind of get off on their own and just hit golf balls and at least do something absolutely i think we invented social distancing right four people play every nine minutes and you’re right when they were keeping parks open i know in arizona we were like “please keep golf open.” people like to walk around and and the veterans that that we have at golf courses across the country that’s what they do to get outside and so you’re right i love that the focus happened that all of a sudden um people are starting to enjoy what the goodness of the game is and and and how it is building relationships generationally i mean you know whether you’re playing with your grandkids or or you’re playing with your brother or sister it’s just there’s so many discussions that happen on a golf course and only happen on a golf course and that’s kind of the beauty of it you know i’ve forgotten the number as we’re watching these players at the six green but there are it’s a huge number of public golf courses in the state of texas um and i think that speaks to it’s be it is becoming more and more of every person’s game and not just a game for those who can afford a private club yeah absolutely i i mean about 2/3 maybe 3/4 of the 16,000 golf courses are public and so there’s plenty of places to play out there you know even our little golf course in mesa arizona you know it’s a par 61 but everybody and anybody’s playing that golf course and those are all over the country whether you’re in texas or you’re in maine or wherever you’re at there’s a community golf course waiting for you and if you haven’t been there in a while that’s all right we just want to come give you a hug and get you on the range hitting balls again and i think that’s what’s been been awesome about golf because it is it’s a sport that everybody can play all the time for the rest of our lives yeah that’s great grant maybe that’s how i can finally break 70 go to the par 61 all right we got uh par putts here for lee and hull before the birdie putt for austin kim this is somi yeah both their chips got got away from them and uh had lift them a difficult putt to save their pars don i know you were out there for a junior day yesterday it was so fun drive past hundreds of kids as they were on their way over to that area it’s the best pga junior league right i mean last year 77,000 kids played that boys and girls playing together reading each other’s putts numbers on their back and we did we celebrated it yesterday uh you know from little friendship bracelets like the one i’m wearing now that i got when i got a pj president friendship bracelet yeah and i’m gonna be wearing that today when i hand out the trophy but it’s all about kids playing together and and the families getting off the cart path and onto the golf course but we’re certainly proud of that all our pj members nationwide uh just growing the game for the right reasons and certainly you know we have the national championship right here at our home but that’s not what pj junior league is the good stuff of that is at the community level cuz kids literally recruit each other to play on the teams and it’s one of the greatest things that the pj of america’s ever created is pj junior league so good i love the jerseys it it it brings that element to it um which golf has never had before jersey numbers it’s great you’re right it’s uh and and it’s cool to ask the kids like “why did you pick the number on the back?” “oh that was my birthday or that was my mom’s birthday.” yeah it’s just an awesome thing we do i just saw a putt made with a wooden shafted putter i love it brings back some memories here’s austin with a metal putter this for birdie wow so we’re stuck at nine birdies for the week at this diabolical sixth but even par one uh uh sorry bogey free one under for the day austin kim don let’s talk a little bit about u pga reach and i know that youth and military and and kind of undersupported communities are a big focus of the pga of america yeah thank you you know i think sometimes in golf especially nowadays it’s all about the money but and what it is but what what does it do you know and that’s what pg of america’s reach foundation is it’s is what we do with that money and certainly it’s pj junior league opportunity leagues which kpmg invested in this week not only the purse but $6 million towards opportunity leagues so proud of that and pj hope helping our patriots everywhere veterans you know that suicide rate is 26 a day and we found that working with the va when we get them out of there onto the golf course with their cohort groups um you know they feel better about themselves and they get out of the house so we’re proud of pj hope but pj works that’s the good stuff too those are those underserved areas the pj works collegiate championship which is for all the h.b.cu we just had it at coler thank you to the colers right nah is one of our she’s the chair of our trustees now but that’s also a fellows program where we put in people and show them that there are so many different jobs in the golf business um just monday we had a beyond the green we call it when we at our major championships we bring in underserved or or people of color into and say “hey it’s not just being a good golf professional what if you’re into marketing what if you like to mow grass and grow grass that’s cool um but also anything that you can do at a golf course because the golf course think about it it’s retail it’s restaurant it’s grass it’s golf it’s amazing.” par putt for charlie that’ll be her first drop shot i believe it hit the hole didn’t it grant looked like it caught a piece [Music] don you have a daughter i know and uh this is a big week for the women’s game elevating this championship $12 million purse and and we know we we keep seeing these numbers about the demographics and and how important women are uh to the growth of the game and how many are taking up the game for the first time yeah it’s one of the largest growing segments right now is women’s golf and you know certainly i am katie’s 22 years old and and she loves women’s sports i mean watching the college world series together is one of the things we do father or daughter and uh you know she keeps me focused on listen golf does do so many things for self-esteem for cohort groups for getting out there and playing obviously we know what happens in the business of the world when it happens on golf courses but that’s what i really love about you know the pj we have a major on every tour and when we have a major on that tour for that week we want to focus on that and and this is women’s golf and so whether it’s the little girls that are pj junior league or whether it’s beyond the green on monday or even the leadership summit we did for some of the youth around our home here on wednesday it’s all about saying to them hey you can do this it’s amazing and i love to see the momentum in women’s sports right now it’s so exciting and yeah katie and i talk about it all the time it’s uh she keeps me focused on dead don’t forget we’re the fastest growing segment in golf love it judy i know you’ve seen all these majors through the years at times there were two major championships in a year so it’s not just the purse the way that these players are treated when they get to a championship like this the courtesy cars driving alexis around all week and and accommodations and and other perks that go along with this big purse uh players are taken care of in a first class way uh caddies are even taken care of these days it is um uh it it’s a it’s a wonderful thing to see uh the respect they’re treated with when they come to a championship like this and this is um been a standout well thank you we’re proud of that i mean first class experience is the same whether you’re a man or a woman right and and whether it’s the past champions dinner which we’ve highlighted extremely um but also it is the iconic venues we want to bring it to we want them to feel special when they’re here and we’re hosting it and kpmg led that and so did the lpga so it’s a great partnership you played with jennifer cupcho i believe i did in the prom how about the way that fields ranch east has held up this week yeah jen’s playing well today isn’t she and that’s good to see um you know she’s actually out of superstition mountain which is right next to my golf course augusta ranch her parents play augusta ranch which made me laugh golf is such a small world um but yeah it’s cool to see her hit it she hits it really good she hits it really straight and the course has been tough the weather’s been tough but this is a major and and i can appreciate that uh you know it takes a little bit of mental approach too as well as a golf skill approach when it when a major so good to see jen playing well though and jen even met her husband at superstition mountains jay monahan not that jay monahan a different jonah different one yeah but jen is three under par today uh we’re going to be back here in 2031 for the the kpmg women’s pga championship but we’re going to get to go to some other cool places here too we’re back at hazeline next year hazeline’s going to be amazing you know and to see greta she’s the chair laura frics our championship director and they’ve been around all week looking at how can we make this better right good’s good but great is better and and it’s nice when like frisco raises the bar so high um that you go okay what can we do next year and i know hazeline and their members and everybody associated with it’s going to take it to another level by the way judy and i as uh fans and followers and commentators on the lpga we would like to thank you for giving us craig kesler the lpga commissioner who leaves his post as the the coo of of the pga of america yeah you’re welcome it’s going to be hard you know craig started while i was an officer of the pj i was on that search committee when we brought him in and it was like wow this guy’s going to be amazing and he’s done amazing things for the pj of america and to know that he’s going over to help the lpga i know he leads with trust he leads with relationship he cares and uh that’s just you know and he’s a harvard nba so get ready uh i think what’s going to happen with golf in general because don’t forget the lpj club professionals that are in there you know marva bernard luis ball is now the president but marva was a good friend of mine and i think he knows how important that group is to the lpga so get ready judy i think the lpj is going to take off under under craig’s care i am just really hoping to be here in 2031 i think that would be great groups can you can we go ahead and sign her up done consider it done presidential flex happening right now i could be grant grant’s runner but um no no uh you know with each major championship and each championship that’s played here uh this golf course will evolve a little bit and it’ll be better better tougher um it can’t be in any better condition i know that but um they they will find ways to uh make this um an an icon in rotations of golf courses and the way you tell the stories i mean you’re our 2024 lifetime journalism award winner judy and that means that you have an ability to um bring people into a sport bring people into a moment and when you do that it becomes emotional and that’s why when you’re watching it with your daughter you’re watching it with your partner and you’re watching golf and and and someone explains it that way all of a sudden once again it’s not about swing stance and score it’s about what golf is all about and you’ve done it the very best and that’s why we were proud to give you that award in 2024 thank you so much first woman to win first woman ever to win it time achievement award in journalism and you couldn’t have picked a better one what took you so long is all i would say well hey teamwork makes the dream work i think it was there it is right there craig kesler look at craig gave you the award that was in augusta the night before the opening round of the masters last year yep little did i know that i was in the company of greatness there yes he was he’s he’s still got that big smile too and and this week i thought he’s been amazing talking to all the players well he has talked to um anyone at um that has ever touched the lpga i’m i’m amazed we’re so happy to have him well he means it because he leads with relationship he want he you know what some people listen to respond and some people listen to learn uh craig is a gentleman who he he listens to learn so i think that’s what’s really going to do him right by being the ceo of the lpga the commissioner there’s just a lot of energy isn’t there not just with craig but just you’re on the property here and i think that’s what we noticed right away judy there’s just energy here that feels like that that this this is going to be your home for a long time and i know texas north texas has embraced you this is a as you know this is a great sports community they love their sports here and to create a sports venue like this uh with so many options for individuals to experience the game for no cost to be able to come out here it’s an expensive game it’s a time-consuming game you can come out for free for a few minutes it’s a big thing and and it can be expensive but it’s also can be free every golf course has got a putting green if it’s a public golf course it’s free to drop a sleeve of balls down there and start putting it but to your point uh this building exemplifies our why the what and how we do yes proud to do it but when you come here we hope you get excited because the why of golf is more important than anything else and we get to tell that story well we do and i’m excited to watch this t-shot because the tea has been moved up jarina to 289 yards today we saw an eagle yesterday from yulimino no let’s see what austin kim can do yeah grant i definitely think the play is still the same up this right side and utilize the slope of this fairway and she has wow that’s the furthest left i’ve seen a ball land and bounce up and stay on the green that’s great shot that’s with 3-wood judy beautiful it looked like a 3-wood for sure on here okay that’s going to be an eagle putt that that hole today 14 paces onto the green so uh maybe just a little bit short of center less than driver for somi as well and is it as it’s been the first three days essentially straight down it is still straight down and it is starting to pick up quite a bit right now so 289 yards straight down wind fast fairway [Music] i think somi could have gone with the driver well you mentioned jireina that it is picking up the wind and mi lee and gino titun have each made bogey and so mi’s back to five under her lead remains five but all of the sudden austin kim is going to have a putt for a share of second place doesn’t look like a straight in easy putt but it’s going to be a putt nonetheless for eagle to get it to even par come on all right charlie now once she addresses it don don’t blink or you’ll miss it even her waggle is fast this is going to be in that swell just short of the green she knows it’s good where we saw nelly early in the week chip it up and it come back to her feet so charlie is going to be faced with a very difficult putt excuse me a very difficult chip especially to an elevated green straight downwind [Music] so as you can tell they’re waving groups up i think the speed slot on this hole is right at the right front corner that’s where we saw balls really go there’s a hard job that young girl who is carrying the leaderboard this the yeah standard bear thank you thank you um that’s a hard job in the wind you’re exactly right she is tired at the end of the day i just going to tell you well judy i i i think about you every year when i come to this championship just because this uh is now 10 years since the kpmg and uh and pg of america partnership with the lpga tour you played in so many of those in in the original incarnation the lpga championship uh and uh a decade now partnering with kpmg and the pga of america it just keeps getting better it seems like yeah if we could go back maybe i could win one but the best i ever did was second it’s pretty darn good you know what i like about when it all first started too it was three groups getting together and doing right by women’s golf you know it wasn’t just hey we need a sponsor we need a title sponsor it wasn’t about that it wasn’t about checking some box um it was to make sure that we were going to showcase women in the leadership roles and professional game you know at the major level level and i’m proud of that i know you were part of that too judy just that’s what the players were expressing so uh kpmg amazing well we also continue to uh give a nod to stacy lewis and her relationship with kpmg because uh she was um she was a big voice for the lpga that’s what i just have to ask huh and she did and it happened yeah and just keeps growing $12 million is what they’re playing for and even more important than that a coveted major title well as don was talking about pga junior league bringing friends families communities together through golf all with expert pga and lpga coaching you can find a team near you at pga junior.com [Music] at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference when i grow up i want to make a difference easy you can do it i want to inspire someone i want to find my place in the world when i grew up i became a pj of america golf professional and it all came true pg of america golf professionals we love this game what golfers experience is pga of america’s gamechanging technology what makes it possible 5g advanced network solutions from t-mobile for business from coaches using ai analytics to players using ar data to find the best path to the cup t-mobile helps pga of america reliably connect with 5g from the course to the clubhouse pga of america goes further with t-mobile for business heat heat [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] it’s somi lee a little short of the green at this par 47th and what kind of touch is this going to take jireina to get it close [Music] well terrina may not hear us with the wind whipping nobody has a 46yd club so this is all about touch [Music] boy and it’s hard to call on that when the wind is so strong at your back and the green is elevated the green is perched up [Music] you know jen when i was playing with her in the proam she said they were looking to get a full club into that green because they just felt like that shot would be so difficult the short shot yeah yep she said “we’re going full wedge into that game green.” charlie now [Music] oh you’re going to see an interesting play here jireina if you can hear us she’s got the putter in her hand yeah that’s really surprising um being where charlie’s from we should be into these these banks but um yeah that’s this she’s going to have to give this a really hard whack to get it up that hill and then on top of that once it gets on top of the hill it slopes away downgraing down very shot that she has chosen with the sputter and she is very lucky part of the reason for that choice is it was just not a good play with a wedge no i mean we saw that earlier judy in the week that nelly tried to bump it in there and it came back to her feet [Music] and nelly afterwards said “i actually hit the ball well i clipped it properly i just didn’t hit it quite hard enough.” uh and it came right back to her feet then she hit a brilliant third saved her par so this is now somi lee over the green charlie didn’t waste any time marking that ball i think it’s just just at the beginning level of the green yeah i don’t know what’s more difficult uh somi’s f second shot into the screen or her third shot this is going to require a ton of touch uh she has about six paces to work with there’s a huge swell that’s just short that she is just staring at right in the eye she had to take this high and land it soft [Music] well good description we saw that swale she must have clipped that just perfectly cuz it actually checked didn’t it jireina when it landed on the green yeah that thing sat very very quickly and uh her only line of defense there was that she had the wind straight into her so don i don’t know how you feel uh as a pga professional they’re going to wave uh this group up here each has now hit another shot but a short par4 like it gives you the opportunity for eagle right but also can create some problems if you don’t hit it just right no doubt there’s a lot of that in this course you know i played it several times and sometimes you’re like “okay i’m just going to bomb it down there.” like for instance number 11 they go “i’ll just get it down there left to the green.” but that’s in a bad spot you’d rather just stay to the right and look at that green straight on that’s the same way right there no doubt when the wind’s blowing down green down grain down wind it’s going to be a difficult shot but coming back maybe not as difficult but it’s a texas golf course so wind is wind and a and a short par4 is always the most exciting goal on the golf course i’m sorry seems like it yeah and as we’ve been saying all week the wind is undefeated right especially here in texas it’s it’s tough to beat the wind you got the wind make it your friend yeah you do it’s uh you know it’s it’s it’s funny because you know being over arizona it doesn’t it’s not too windy out there but you know lee trevino the other night when he was talking to a group of people he was talking about that’s why he thinks texas golfers end up doing pretty well on tour because you can play out of this wispy rough bermuda which is very difficult and you can chip and and play around a texas golf course with the wind you know how to shape the ball so when you get on tour you’re just a little bit better at that than people who are just banging it up there and hitting their wedges so interesting perspective from lee well don i don’t know uh if we can go ahead and call it we we’ve all watched way too much golf it looks like it might be mile lee that you’re handing that beautiful kpmg women’s pga championship trophy to at the end of the day a dallas fort worth resident here in the us whoever you hand it to it’s going to be well earned this week won’t it uh no doubt you know and i think it’s a major it’s and that means it’s going to be a little bit mental and you know and certainly uh what she does today is going to be very important and i know she’s getting close to that grand slam area right with her majors but um it’s cool to see her play it’s it’s uh you know i think we’re very proud of this golf course both the west and the east because anybody can have a great time on this facility and and then at the same time host a major championship so we’ll see what happens it’s never over till it’s over but menie her she’s got good control of her game and her emotions which sounds like a good deal there you see the leaderboard gino titigan had a had a six under par entering the weekend she’s dropped a couple more today mi’s one over and uh austin kim they have waved the group ahead austin kim’s going to have a putt for eagle to get it to even par and you just never ever quite know do you we thank you for everything this week what what a nice week we’ve had well good i appreciate everything you guys been in these chairs a long time and telling the story of golf to everybody who’s watching and uh yeah isn’t it cool to have a broadcast studio in our home and and i know that’s a little bit the air conditioning is nice in here does make it a little bit easier we we have made ourselves at home because you’ve made us feel that way so thank you you’re welcome low round of the day today we mentioned earlier that don’s prom partner inspired by don’s silky smooth swing jennifer cupcho is tied for the low round of the day at three under and we saw the name of miranda wong terrific player from duke she helped the blue devils win a national championship she’s three under and she has moved it into a tie for fourth with this player austin kim so jina austin great start with a birdie she’s really held it together with some some clutch saves and now a big opportunity here at the seventh yeah she’s looking at a putt straight up the hill into the grain into the wind um she has this in her caddy brendan going i would say probably about 10 inches left to right with these conditions she should definitely be able to be aggressive with this putt and and scare the hole just an fyi in this season 2025 she has made four eagles none bigger than this one should it drop [Music] that was a quality putt it looked like it had a chance yeah good effort she had the she had the speed down perfectly that’s going to take her to two under for the day and into a tie for third place charlie now able to just stay up on top of the green there and give herself a putt for birdie and that tells you exactly where she is you can only see her from the knees up she still plumb bobs judy player after my own heart plays fast and plumb bobs got to like that [Music] and has the sunglasses like judy rankin back in her prime the difference is i couldn’t see real well mine were prescription [Music] now so me for a scrambling par i like when i see the little girls doing plumb bob with both their eyes open you know cuz they see it on television like “no no no we got to have your dominant eye.” don when my little boy was little he would address the golf ball and he’d look at the target and then he’d look behind him he didn’t know which way he was supposed to look right or forward or backward this is some kind of day for somi lee she really struggled at the second hole when she tugged her approach up the hill made double but uh look great up and down hilton her caddy is really staying in her rear and cheering her on miy lee has just made another bogey so mi’s back at four under this is a putt for austin kim to get within five of the lead and a share of third place i said it yesterday and i maybe i should be saying it today we’re going to have the leaderboard shuffle [Music] this is just a foot and a half or so well that’s power and finesse brilliant t-shot with the three-wood to this par4 and with the wind just buffeting her great first putt and a tap in for birdie and austin kim clean card two under tied for third and just five back she was nine back when the round started seven holes she’s gained four shots [Music] par for charlie don ray jr great to see you well it was great to see you guys thank you very much thanks for coming to our home president of the pga of america our guest and uh enjoy the trophy presentation our and our coverage of featured groups presented by kpmg and t-mobile for business from this final round of the kpmg women’s pga championship will continue austin kim on the march now in third place what golfers experience is pga of america’s gamechanging technology what makes it possible 5g advanced network solutions from t-mobile for business from coaches using ai analytics to players using ar data to find the best path to the cup t-mobile helps pga of america reliably connect with 5g from the course to the clubhouse pga of america goes further with t-mobile for business when i grow up i want to make a difference easy you can do it i want to inspire someone i want to find my place in the world when i grew up i became a pj of america golf professional and it all came true pg of america golf professionals we love this game at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference [Music] good started on your golf journey with a pga of america coach who specializes in your experience and needs you’ll discover it’s more than just a lesson at pga.com/coach [Music] par three and austin kim has gone from good day to in contention two under in this final round and now alone in third place and only five shots off the lead and she’s just a shot behind second at the moment how about the challenge of this eighth jina yeah grant it’s starting to blow reason why they took them a little longer to decide what club to hit um she’s looking at landing this i would guess about eight on and that would get her to clear that first bunker right of the hole and this is on a great line nice and high towering shot wow austin kim maybe she’s going to get to even par for the championship and a tie for second place we are going to give her that putt that’s how good the shot was from 157 yds just 24 years old from st augustine florida played collegiately at vanderbilt second season on the lpga tour and in the hunt for a major championship somi lee now she’s looking to copy paste but this is on a flatter ball flight left of the hole it’s going to find that bunker nelly carter was back there yesterday when the hole was over on the right nelly had an amazing up and down now charlie usually very decisive once she she makes a decision and she goes doesn’t she jireina yes she is there’s no time to to doubt anything with charlie but that has come up well short oh boy there is penalty area and um we’ll have to wait and see but austin kim is the story right now here at pga frisco a two putt birdie at the seventh and a tap in coming at the eighth [Applause] who’s that not not uh charlie no her dad chris her mom pilljo out here following boston [Music] she made a double bogey on the 17th hole yesterday her second double of the day and it took her from one over to three over a really nice par at the 18th but began the day nine shots off the lead she’s about to get within four so you go try to evaluate that round when you go in and you say “lord i made a double bogey on a hole that’s just a yard or two over a 100 yards but here on this difficult eighth her birdies have been tough to come by all week she hits maybe the best of the entire championship [Music] and now how does the challenge change for austin she knows where she is in the championship if she doesn’t exactly know on the leaderboard she absolutely will know that this kind of a start is moving her up and how challenging is that now when you begin nine back versus being knowing that you’re very much in the hunt i think you’re trying to keep the pedal to the metal because everybody in this game knows um if at some point you can post a score kind of early kind of early post a score that’s up on the leaderboard um in the biggest championships it matters we see it all the time year after year and especially at places like this you were there weren’t you at the us open at pebble beach in 1992 when colin montgomery finished early that’s right that’s right and i was and he looked like he had no chance to win and all of a sudden on that that sunday that was wind swept there’s the tap in for austin he suddenly was in cont jack nicholas i think was up in the booth i think he called uh calling a winner congratulations you’ve just won the us open and if not for some great play by texan tom kite i’ll tell you about the win that day i was an encourse commentator like jireina is now and standing on the seventh t up there behind that sixth green way up high at pebble beach i could not hear the people talking to me at all you saw it there graphically she is now as we said tied for second charlie second at the eighth she can’t i don’t know if you saw that but that was a fried egg and that was a great out from where she was well we saw the sandfly but we did not see the large arena was it as bad as brooks yesterday um no it was not plugged you could see half the ball but she had a level stance unlike brooke somi has had if you’re going to miss it in the bunker on this hole this is where you want to miss it and she’s hit a great shot yeah it’s a that’s a really nice shot and um charlie’s playing this annie over golf which nobody likes [Music] and it can happen easily here we just saw somi at the seventh from in front of the green to over it saved par with a brilliant pitch and now somi’s hit another good one out of the bunker charlie’s got this for her third yeah from what i’ve seen all week i feel like this is kind of the place you want to miss it if you’re trying to avoid the bunkers and you’re not able to get on the green it’s a pretty straightforward chip back into the wind back into the grain good shot but it’ll be a drop shot for charlie you know grant we play these golf courses and sometimes you’re going to have make good bogeies and this is going to be a good bogey [Music] and now somi for a par we talked about the importance of the top 10 finish getting you into next year’s kpmg somi had a really unfortunate occurrence trying to get into the us women’s open they take two different cutoff points and they take the top 75 in the rolex rankings on the second one she was 73rd going into the last week of the cutoff when the last week happened she dropped to 76th the next week she moved up to 70th but they take that second cut off and so she didn’t make it to the us women’s open and for her a chance with a good finish here to go ahead and punch her ticket to hazel teen next year and she is doing some really good work here to stay in the top 10 as she does just barely actually now she’s dropped out one shot out of the top 10 at the moment the w the women’s tour the lpga tour is just like the pga tour in the sense that it is often times really hard um to get your to get your exemptions to play to be uh to be somebody who has that card and has the freedom to decide where they’ll play um it is it it’s one of the hardest parts of professional golf is getting your access we see good players every year having to go to us open qualifying for example mhm well austin kim a tapin birdie at the eighth she’s four shots off the lead and headed to a reachable par five next [Music] at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference when i grow up i want to make a difference easy you can do it i want to inspire someone i want to find my place in the world when i grew up i became a pg of america golf professional and it all came true pg of america golf professionals we love this game what golfers experience is pga of america’s gamechanging technology what reliably connect with 5g from the course to the clubhouse pga of america goes further with t-mobile for business huh [Music] tell you what i lie pretty good at that life to get it there yeah our featured group makes its way to the par five ninth and austin kim three under on a round today will take on this reachable par five judy with a good t-shot chance to get to this screen in two uh this is um really an interesting hole uh you have to get that t-shot somewhere in between bunker short bunker to the right longer bunker to the left um it is really important to put your your first shot in the fairway because i think probably for all three of these players it is uh get home in two time uh you’ve got some help from the wind here you see the giant um panther creek crossing and a green that starts short left and goes far to the back right um this is this is one of the more interesting holes on the golf course i think and really fun to watch penalty area down the right side it’s what makes the t-ot at this hole so very difficult but we have seen as little as a seven iron into this green um when the wind was really up and um a a good t- shot was played i think was that was either nelly or lexi i believe no nelly had been there to just 7 ft today um it’s going to be interesting to try to get the ball close because the hole is on the front portion of the green well and nelly when the hole was on the front portion yesterday tried to get it close came up short in the penalty area was fortunate that it actually crossed the red line and she was able to chip from up there for her fifth and salvage bogey yeah good point cuz um a lot of these whole locations kind of uh tempt you to be a little greedy and if you do that you better be perfect here’s austin austin kim three under today tied for second mi lee has just made another bogey at the sixth austin kim is three shots back as she plays the ninth oh and find the fairway grass cuz she can get home with ease has found it a lot today and has found it once again beautiful she has hit every fairway today she’s missed three greens gotten it up and down each time and she’s going to have a great chance to pick up a shot maybe two here at the ninth somi lee is next and the wind at the moment jina [Music] jarina can you give us a sense to the wind it may be difficult to hear out there with the wind whipping and crowds out there that’s in a very exposed part of very exposed property charlie aimed a little left gives you an idea what she thought about it she didn’t think about it too long no [Music] all right great t-shots from our featured group and pga of america golf professionals across the country love this game they’re the heartbeat of the sport in the golf industry learn more about the pga of america at pga.com/we love thisgame we’ve loved watching austin kim today got off to a great start big drive at the first perfect layup great third and off she went let’s look at some of her highlights began the day three over par and just getting to this position hasn’t been easy but she did and here’s her third watch how close this came yeah part of it was a perfect layup on that opening par five she’d make that for birdie and then this was big in the bunker with an awkward stance for her third it was a great shot to get it to that point and then she makes it and then the par4 seventh it’s been reachable for the big hitters all week moved up today even farther and austin with a 3-wood early holes all into the wind when you get to seven it is downwind [Music] not the easiest of two putts as you can see going up the hill a bit into the green and then back down she navigated it beautifully two putt birdie and then at the eighth her best shot of the day [Music] she hits it a very long way she hits it extremely well and she doesn’t look as though she works too hard swinging the club did not have to work hard for that putt a tap in last year on the lpga tour as you take a look at that updated leaderboard it’s now as we said a threeshot lead from ng lee over gino titakun and now austin kim last year austin kim very first start as an lpga member tied for sixth and she talked about what that meant it it it gave her the freedom to just go play not worry about her tour card that basically locked it up for the year and she was able to play with the freedom and she wound up having a really nice rookie year 63rd in the race to the cme globe and this year judy her putting has improved significantly she was outside the top 100 in putting 117th in putts per green in regulation last year she’s 73rd which may not sound great but that’s a that’s a dramatic improvement over what she had done the year before and with that length just that incremental improvement in putting you’re seeing austin kim do what she’s doing this week well we’ve seen solid putting from her today um but in fact on the lpj tour her putts per round are th over 30 um per round and i would say when you you get in when you’re a little bit more of an elite player uh you’re going to get that number under 30 and uh she’s certainly putting today thus far uh like that number should be under 30 because she and she’s got a she’s got she’s got a very nice putting stroke nice and controlled putting stroke everything about her game looks like uh she’s not trying too hard she’s not working too hard she knows she hits the ball a long way but you can’t see it in in her technique and i think that that’s what you love to see about a player versus lexi we see her length and her technique and um i can’t say there’s anything wrong with it people love to watch that and after another long straight t-shot she’ll have a chance to go for this green in two [Music] yeah it’s somewhat of a diagonal green across panther creek where the front left is closer to you uh than the front right uh that hole is in that front left portion today uh so you you there maybe is a little bailout short left um but safely across the creek is your first that’s the first thing you’re thinking about and the second thing is whole location and get it close you don’t get that many chances on a golf course like this to make a run at an eagle mhm she’s had one so far yeah let’s do it and she’ll have certainly another one the 15th hole has been moved up again today so a chance to drive that one as well and there’s the whole location of which you spoke so me to go first yeah so has the one to the front going to be looking to the green and let it run up and utilize that slope on the left to bring it back to the hole [Music] [Music] all right a little chip away charlie next charlie has 202 to the pin she’s going with six iron here balls middle to back in her stance she is left hopefully it utilized so jina downwind and a little from the left [Music] and now here we go austin kim tied for second now just three shots off the lead second shot at the par five ninth only 189 for austin here she’s 170 maybe a little it’s down at her back beautiful swing nice high shot asking for it to go beautiful shot oh and it did yeah ball was just below her feet i i like that angle from a little bit right of center back into this green um i think charlie hall had the ball more below her feet and kind of a a tougher um downwind angle um the way i see it anyway and uh we got another run at an eagle she was sweating that one out but rewarded for that daring play and austin kim is going to have a putt to get within one of the lead featured groups from the kpmg women’s pga championship aren’t you glad you watched what golfers professionals we love this game at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference [Music] [Music] featured [Music] [Music] group coverage from the kpmg women’s pga championship got some eagle chips coming up for charlie hall and for somi lee and an eagle putt in a moment from austin kim to get within one of the lead charlie first yeah grant if there’s anywhere you want to leave this second shot is where charlie and sony are it’s pretty straightforward chip [Music] looks like a birdie for charlie that would be her f first of the day so me now yeah she’s straight into the green here so that’s definitely going to be to her advantage wow i thought she did it for a minute i did too it’s going to be a birdie for somi to get her back at the nine hole mark once she taps that in that’ll get her back to where she began the day plus three one more look here judy lofted club the hole not too far away from her this is the time when you do use that lofted club and i sure thought she made it there for a minute nice touch beautiful touch well now austin kim in the spotlight earlier this season in china she got herself into the final group with rio teada and um austin was tied for second entering that final round teada leading the rookie of the year standings went on to win it so she has played a couple of times late on a sunday with a chance to win but never on this stage as a professional she’s got this putt to get within one of the lead after beginning the day nine back there’s never been anyone to come for more than seven shots back to win an lpga major and a player who went to vanderbilt and uh it’s considered going to law school trying to rewrite the record books here austin’s looking at this putt going right to left her and her caddyy brennan talked about the grain helping that that cause however the wind is going to be working against that big swing i think they’re probably coming in later for the and now a little extra work to secure the birdie only mi lee is under par she’s at minus three and three over for the day mi’s playing the par4 seventh at driveable par4 so you go from standing over a putt for eagle now judy to not wanting to let an opportunity get away yeah tricky little short putt [Music] we saw from somi’s um nice little chip shot that uh there is some left to right swing in this putt i’m not sure if that’s inside the hole or on the top edge of the hole but uh it’s sure looks like it’ll move you’re definitely right judy it’s going to move left to right it’s all going to depend on her speed i think the only thing that she needs to do is just commit to the line and the speed and make sure they match up austin kim unflapable good four great four three straight and using her length to her advantage and showing the deaf touch with the putter and she hasn’t always had in a year and a half out here on the lpga tour alone in second and just two shots off the lead mi of course gets that drivable seventh and this ninth coming up charlie and up and down for her first party of the day this featured group makes the turn and austin kim alone in second sunday at the kpmg women’s pga championship [Music] at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by cup t-mobile helps pga of america reliably connect with 5g from the course to the clubhouse pga of america goes further with t-mobile for business coming home safe [Music] happy [Music] [Music] nbc sports along with the ladies professional golf association and the pga of america welcome you to the kpmg women’s pga championship you’re watching featured groups presented by kpmg and t-mobile for business [Music] and uh did we ever pick a great featured group today thanks to the pga of america for giving us this three ball here at fields ranch east at pga frisco just north of texas our featured group just north of dallas this featured group includes austin kim who’s four under today miranda wong also minus four slightly easier scoring today but austin kim has moved from nine shots off the lead to within two grant boon judy rankin jireina mendoza is out there in the fairways and austin kim on the tee at the 10th judy nine holes to play and two shots off the lead trying to win a major championship little bunker complex at the left corner here a shorter par4 [Music] and i’m not sure where that one might have settled but a shorter par4 where you uh get a birdie opportunity there was a little sound there was jarina did you happen to catch that one not literally yes yes she challenged that bunker on the left um which is incredible with the the breeze that’s facing out here and she only had three so me lee good shot it’s a somewhat generous hole location today um maybe just slightly right of center now charlie charlie with driver i’ll be curious to see if she’s going to challenge that bunker that aggressive player that she is known to be wouldn’t put it past her just right of the bunker great shot before they got to the 10th t somi lee took a little stop and pretended to be the first t announcer we saw her next to the microphone earlier in the round i think she she loves the mic let’s get her into that karaoke bar like jina was suggesting in contention for a second straight week somi lee doesn’t look like it’s going to be quite enough today grant judy jerina all of whom call texas our adopted home state great to have a women’s major championship in the state of texas again and judy take us through the 10th i think i’ve been here longer than you’ve been here couple couple years this par4 um it feels like a little dog leg left but the only reason for that is you’re trying to take the ball around those bunkers that bunker um from the t give or take a 240 yard um another green that has runoff in the back runoff to the right um really important to uh catch a big piece of this green and not just an edge or you’re going to find yourself chipping again this hole location is 18 paces deep in the green and um just just a little bit right of center so it’s a generous hole location today and one that um i think if you’re if you’re playing from short grass surely you want to give yourself a birdie opportunity [Music] well there are no shortage of scoreboards around uh pga frisco and fields ranch east i would certainly be sure that brendan woolly knows where things stand as the county going to take us to the fair and austin kim as you noted would be wise to just keep doing what she’s doing pedal to the metal right that’s exactly right um you know there’s no reason to ease up now um give this nine holes the best you’ve got and it could make her a major championship come days end young people are standard bearers all week long and i’m going to give a hello to a young man that i know is carrying the standard for corotus sagand’s group and his name is trey tomaso um i think trey is um right in the 14year-old age he could have turned 15 by now but um a left-handed golfer in his own right and opportunities like this for young people to be up close and inside the ropes um are are really good um thank you are you sure for kids who love the game also inside the ropes is our john bender are you sure all right so sorry about that yeah and uh it was austin’s t-shot that hit john and his trusty sidekick ej is there as well john trooper that he is wears it as we would say in baseball hit by t-shot and austin says sorry about that and also thanks for keeping it from going deeper into the rough the angle’s going to be okay question is the lie we’ll see if jina can take a look at it group ahead is still on the 10th green yeah i just got up here and the lie is brutal um i had got to look at it and then paige she came up from the golf channel and they had to point to it several times cuz she’s like i’m not seeing it paige mckenzie out there nbc golf channel so a lie like that might indicate um trying to bring it up from short of the green somi is going to go first and with that birdie somi moves into a tie for ninth miley lee made par at the seventh so minty remains minus three wondering about nelly corda by the way world number one she’s three over for her day today five over for the championship and eight back [Music] i suppose we shouldn’t completely count out somi lee at plus three after the wild swings we’ve seen this week she’s six off the lead she’s four out of second and she just hit a good 100yard shot here at the 10th uh and has a birdie putt uh i want to see how austin plays this one yeah austin has about 85 yards and uh talking with her caddy she was even having a hard time getting it out of the rough and this is going to be well short of the green just shows the difficulty of this rough all right well she passed the test at the second when she was in an awkward spot in a bunker got up and down charlie now 76 yard for charlie a beautiful low ball flight with her wedge and she has judged that nicely good shot beautiful shot well this is exciting in our featured groups to have a player contending for the trophy and i’d love to hear from both of you just the thoughts on maybe early in your career the first times that you got into contention and and how it helped you maybe later we don’t often see a player get into contention for the first time and get it done get the win so austin’s been in that position a couple of times it seems like something hard to replicate well and when this happens um often times it is a player who posts an early score um and you know regardless of how you get your first win and there’s a lot of ways to get it um it it does in some way open a floodgate for most players uh the first one’s hard to come by um if it should come um i don’t want to say by accident that is the the wrong word grant but if it should come on a day when you really didn’t expect it teeing off um you know it’s it’s even it’s even better the fact is though if she continues to play well the last holes will be just as much pressure on her as anybody else trying to finish the round off jarina i want to get your thoughts on that in a moment but first the third here for austin [Music] yeah this is a pretty standard pitch shot um she’s having to deal with just a little bit of visual of the bunker not much um into the grain into the wind [Music] looks to me to have that blade a little bit open yeah that’s beautifully judged and and how about that place to putt from for par [Music] i think that’s uphill believe i would call it underneath the hole so jireina those first couple of times you got yourself into contention what did it do for you what did you learn from it um i remember the very first time i was in uh contention it happened to be at a major the lpga championship in rochester 2012 and um it’s kind of similar to austin i wasn’t really close to the lead and just started plunking along making some birdies here and there and i tried not to watch the score scoreboards too often but um i noticed the camera crews showing up and i’m like well i must be close to the lead so um didn’t work out in my favor but uh just gave me a ton of confidence um later in my career and you just look back at what you did well what you didn’t do well and you just try to get better at what you don’t do well and just kind of hone in those things that you do do well so me leave for birdie wow that looked good for a long time boy it almost seemed to turn up the hill didn’t it it did by the way that was a t6 for jireina in 2012 shan shan fang a great character from china first from china to play on the lpga tour and rochester new york we should give a nod to them one of the great great smaller cities uh that was so good to the lpga tour and uh that entire entire city came out they did yeah it was it was really fun corning was another good one up in that area that seemed to have the whole town come out corning a little smaller place same kind of reception birdie putt for charlie then the par putt for austin [Music] yeah i don’t see much movement in this it’s just all going to depend on how much the wind will affect it straight uphill yeah she is directly underneath the hole the wind wasn’t supposed to let that happen the flag didn’t knock it out but uh that was a power lift for birdie for charlie [Music] charlie’s home course in england is wburn um quite a quite a nice course in its own right and um a course that has hosted uh the women’s british yes a parkland style course hanaco shabuno won there thinking she was coming to a lynx course wasn’t she surprised and then weren’t we surprised when the smiling cinderella got it done on sunday could austin kim author her own kind of cinderella story i guess i guess that was that was my introduction to her and i still get a kick watching her play golf so fun 98th in the rolex rankings austin kim this though for par at the 10th to stay two back not much in this putt in the middle and that was worthy of a fist pump the vanderbilt commodore anchoring down here on sunday at a major championship and going to the 11th which is another hole that uh just might provide um a good opportunity for birdie first we’ll tell you that pga hope is serving those who served as the flagship military veteran program of the pga of america reach foundation to donate to this program that has the power to save lives go to pgarach.org i think i’m as impressed with that uh up and down for par as i have been with some of the other birdies from austin kim take us through this 11th well once again you see staggered bunkers a shorter one um on the right side shorter to the t- box and a little longer on the left side trying to get the ball in the fat of the fairway just past the right hand bunker and um if you get past both bunkers you can see it’s quite a generous fairway it is an interesting green in that it has a huge slope in it from left to right so uh you’re probably using that slope as you play your second shot here at the 11th and uh today pull way back in this green way back in the green and eight paces on the right side and as many double bogeies as birdies today and yet you see it i believe as a birdie hole i i think you should today’s it’s been the toughest fairway to hit and uh it’s been the the second toughest green to hit in regulation 382 yards today austin having a snack here and the lefthand bunker that i showed you 245 yard carry for these players and sometime a yawn is a sign of a little stress because you’re needing a little oxygen yeah and sometimes it’s because the round is taking six hours i mean it it can be both grant you’re you’re just so honest well it uh it’s it’s all as don ray the president of the pg of america told us it’s it’s part of that major championship crucible that you’re in and uh you know that if you walk away with a trophy you’ve done something special and i watched not long ago a piece um with jack nicholas where jack was talking about conditions wind rain whatever that might be are part of major championship golf and just learn to deal with it i think uh at the time we were talking about very wet fairways and mud balls and all those kinds of things but uh certainly wind is a wind is a um a condition that uh really affects the game of golf so the wind probability remains 100% but look at austin kim she has burst into the top three in win probability insights by kpmg has her now with an 8% chance to win which may not sound like a lot but when you consider she started nine shots back it tells you how far she has come in part because of how far she can hit it 0.1 was uh her chance we were saying there’s a chance but not much of one until now finding the fairway critical once again carrying the left bunker let’s just say to be safe 250 she has hit this perfectly split the two bunkers [Music] and how about the wind as they continue this stretch heading east jireina this is going to be into uh mostly but maybe a hair from the right okay as it’s been most of the week now so me with the driver this one has found the bunker it almost got out on the top lip but it’s gone back down to the bottom she’s going to have to deal with the lip on her second shot left hand bunker jerina yes ma’am was that the yeah left hand okay now charlie driver for charlie and she has just flown austin’s ball austin kim two shots off the lead in the fairway at the 11th [Music] at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference when i grow up i want to make a have changed have blown this leaderboard to smitherines miy lee began the day with a huge lead of four over gino titan but take a look now menie three over as she plays the eighth and austin kim in our featured group is four under and now just two shots off the lead trying to author the biggest comeback in lpga major championship history nine off the lead when the round began but now just two back just two back and she’s putting together the best round of the day along with miranda wong the rookie from china both four underpar somi lee and charlie hall joining austin kim in our featured group and somi in the bunker at the par for 11th fairway bunker trying to figure out a way out of it are you live right now that’s austin kim in the fairway pga of america reach foundation is positively impacting lives through the game of golf so all can love this game to learn more and find ways you can help go to pgarach.org another hot windy day here in north texas and austin kim from florida played college golf at vanderbilt second year on the lpga tour like somi lee and each looking for a first victory in austin trying to make it a major she’s going in the bunker please going in the bunker right judy rankin has stepped out for a moment and we welcome in mel reed to the booth to see what all the commotion is about austin kem making a big move mel is she ever i didn’t see that today in this very difficult challenging conditions but austin’s playing her way around this golf course very nicely we we try to prepare ourselves don’t we we we say anything can happen you just don’t know how it’s going to happen and today it’s austin kemp playing flawless golf we saw miy with an unbelievable round yesterday bogey free 69 and it takes something like that around this place you have to be almost perfect don’t you oh you really do um especially with these challenging conditions the setup firmness of these greens but i love the way that austin’s playing you know i i feel like she’s training in the right direction she’s got hits an absolute country mile she’s got a nice high ball flight if anyone can make a charge it’s someone like an austin kim and we were talking to judy and jireina just a moment ago about being in contention late on a sunday for the first time really hasn’t been there down the stretch in an lpga tournament she did play in late on a sunday in china earlier this year made a quadruple bogey in that final round early and it kind of took her out of it what is it like for a player to go from nine back when a round starts to suddenly knowing and even if she doesn’t know where she stands exactly she has to know that she’s up near the top oh absolutely she’s def she’s definitely aware that she’s made up some ground uh significantly you know i didn’t see mji there shooting through but this is the challenging thing about this golf course no lead is too big it can snap in a in a second um birdies are very hard to come by here obviously not for austin she’s the only one that is making a ton of birdies but still a long way to go all right jina the second now that the green is cleared at the 11th the second for austin kim yeah austin has 146 to the pin only 120 to the front however she’s only she’s not looking at that number there is a big hump just about the middle of the green she wants to land this probably six short 140 to stay on that top tier she’s hit this high towering beautiful shot left of the hole asking for it to stop i think okay there worse places you can be i think here this is where gino titakun’s round began to come unraveled yesterday so me now uhoh she has not gotten out of the bunker she was trying to hit a seven iron she had 147 to the hole and that is a big big mistake that’s a that’s an ugly sound isn’t it mel absolutely bit off a little bit more than she could chew there charlie [Music] all right third shot here for somi lee she’s gotten this one up and now it is going short left and that’s going to leave her with a pretty difficult pitch all [Music] right as you heard mel reid is joining us lpga winner soulheim cup stalward vice captain and have been doing great work all week on live from on golf channel uh mel as we said you know it can happen you just don’t know if it will and it has happened for austin today it has and to be honest with you mji’s let the door a little bit open very much so and austin’s taken advantage of that look she’s a fantastic ball striker she hits it a country mile i just said that she’s perfect for this kind of golf course you know you have to hit it high you have to create a lot of spin she’s hitting a lot of fairways as well so she’s given herself really good positions to approach these really treacherous greens what will be the biggest challenge for austin coming down the stretch here to going at one point from nine shots back now knowing that she’s up near the lead i think mentally just staying very much in her processes she’s going through a tough stretch now 11 12 13 14 and then you’ve also got the treacherous 16th and then the 18th is going to play very tricky for somebody of her length that’s a really hard fairway for her to hit on 18 and to hold the green from the rough is very difficult and challenging on 18 so she’s got to stay within herself and just keep doing what she’s doing take deep breaths try probably not to pay too much attention to the leaderboards and just try to get in there with a good score if she pars in or let’s say she finishes at one under she’s not going anywhere she’s going to wait what kind of chance would she have at minus one i think she’s got a pretty good chance to be honest with you i i really can’t see this being any more than two under winning this tournament um like i said mi’s got a few really difficult stretcher holes coming up so listen she’s got the par five um she’s got the short 15th you know she’s got a great chance of getting in there at two under all right so let’s go back out to the golf course here and see these third shots well a fourth shot coming up for somi lee as a matter of fact third shots though for charlie and austin austin’s only 27 feet away from the hole but uh just off the green so here’s the fourth shot for somi yeah they had the rangefinder out trying to get a good yardage on this um she has to go over this ridge and uh shoot into the wind into the grain it’s going to definitely favor her she has not flown that far enough and that’s the ridge that i’ve been talking about that you had to avoid somi was three over par when the round began birdied the first made double at the second came back with a birdie at the third and she’s held it together but now she’s going to drop at least a shot charlie now her birdie pitch oh she just got kind of stabbed that into the ground there i think the grain got her and then it hit the fringe just killed it [Music] we heard angela stanford who’s played here before telling us about how many uh people miss the green to the left cuz they’re worried about the disaster to the right but once you miss it left you’re going straight down the hill austin’s not that far off the green how difficult would you say this is forget about the fact that it’s the sunday at the kpmg jina you know going around this green looking at it now i think she missed it in a great spot i mean obviously she doesn’t want to miss it right however um the next best one is i think this is where you want to miss this whole location you’re going to want to putter you don’t want to use other than nelly i think anyone would take putter here don’t you think [Music] [Music] yeah that’s well played there it’s called the texas wedge for a reason it’s very windy out here in texas and a lot of players opting to use the putter when they’re just off the fringe like that so this is for par for austin on a hole that’s been really tough third toughest hole today as many double bogeies as birdies tells you something and just ticks off yet another that’s what she’s got to do you know stressfree pause as well that’ll really help conserve her energy out here mentally so if she’s not making birdie make sure you just you know having as least amount of stress as possible this is the bogey putt for somi lee straight back up the hill it’s going to move to her right she can be a little aggressive with this one [Music] the putting stroke is so pure and just lips out so that’s her second double of the day and you’re nine back like austin kim starting the day if you’re going to do something historic you can’t really afford any stumble austin’s had none and it’s why she is alone in second place now charlie for her par moving a little left to right all right good saves from austin kim and charlie and somi lee just a little bit of work left for her double bogey well any faint hopes for somi lee may have stayed in that fairway bunker at the 11th but for austin kim that confident stride toward what could be lpga history mel take us through this par4 12th another tough one a very tough par4 as you can see it’s like that water hazard and just absolute rubbish there on that right hand side and this wind today will be right to left which will obviously help not going in there it’s just a really tricky hole you know this green complex is quite tricky um the pin here kind of back left anything right at this pin it kind of fades away down that right hand side and these bunkers are no picnic either just a very difficult golf hole austin kim has boged this twice in the last three holes and that just goes to show how treacherous it can be and how about austin enduring you know a pair of double bogeies yesterday including one late at the short par 317th yes she shot 76 on a day that i think she felt like was better than that with those two stumbles well she’s come back today and she’s been flawless yeah she has and you know you take out them two doubles she’s having a good round but that’s the thing in major championships you do have to try and minimize them double bogeies poogies are always fine in a major championship especially a golf course setup like this there you see with her prodigious length to hit that many fairways it’s one of the reasons she’s right here she’s missed only one today she’s hit this beautifully up the left side so you’re our our resident swing analyst find something wrong with that swing not a lot um i love the rhythm i love the little pause at the top kind of reminds me of a cameron young just beautiful balance she’s just so powerful i always been very impressed um ever since i i knew austin a couple of years ago very impressed with her game here’s one of your favorites one of our favorites everyone’s favorite charlie hall it’s great boring fight right down the middle of the fairway it’s about the only thing boring charlie does it is it’s got the fastest recall in golf i think glasses stayed on back of the skirt now back on si came back from the double bogey at two with a birdie at three and trying to regroup here after another austin kim has fought her way into the story here at pga frisco what golfers experience is pga of america’s kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference busy busy uh season of two freshman this oh wow all right stuff up there [Music] [Music] well it seemed all the world like men lee had one hand on that trophy when the round began up by four but now austin kim in our featured group coverage has moved into second place alone four under on a round today one under for the championship and a chance to make her first lpga victory a big one grant boon mel reed jerina mendoza it’s been a story of the week stay hydrated keep the energy up long days but a a big prize waiting yeah there it is and as you can see that one of the most difficult things you know when it’s hot and windy like this is actually getting enough nutrition in your body you actually don’t feel very hungry so it’s nice to see you eat in there keeping energy energy levels very very stable it’s always something it’s very easy to drink out here and stay hydrated but it’s the eating part that i always struggled with but yeah yeah big fan of austin she actually doesn’t live too far from me i’m in jacksonville she’s in st augustine so had a few conversations and can’t i can’t believe she’s asking me for advice but yeah she’s been asking me for a little bit of advice as well she wants to soak up the wisdom of a veteran she’s also done some good work with rick singinghouse in that pga coach student relationship he is as you may remember the longtime coach for colin morala another pga champion and u as you see charlie just getting some sun here it’s so charlie oh hey that’ll be on the gram won’t it yeah why not oh why not i mean if adam knows how to work the phone no adam definitely doesn’t know how to work the phone actually to be around to be around charlie that much he must know how to work a phone so he’s part of the job requirement exactly is to do a good social media post but yeah she does not like slow play desire charlie but they’re moving a lot quicker today which is nice to see it is and they went to threes today and the course is playing a little easier i wonder how much is just the players knowing it a little bit better and and um having that extra day of just having seen it in championship competition yeah i feel like the pins are a little bit more accessible today as well um but certainly playing here for 3 days you know what to expect you know what the challenge i don’t think the wind is quite as challenging as it has been the last couple of days i think it also helps not having it as slow as it has been the last two days as well waiting on a lot of shots so that’s always going to help um you know keep the rhythm of the play going keep the rhythm of the players going it will always produce a little bit better scores they’re waiting on brooke henderson miranda wong and shinsel bang of korea and wong is another of those who’s had a great day going although she did just drop a shot at the 11th we saw miranda contend in mexico just a month ago get herself into a late weekend tea time austin kim was in contention at the lote championship last year toward the end of her rookie year said she learned a lot from that experience here’s charlie with her second charlie has 150 to the hole wind is coming up more off the right it feels like she is at this high right at the hole looks awesome yeah she’s done well there she just missed one to the left on a right to left wind and she learned from the last one that was a beautiful shot there from charlie you can see austin’s ball up there to the left of your screen somi lee next to play somi same yardage is 150 her and tropical both have a slight ups slope that they’re having to contend with here on the fairway what makes that a little difficult trying to keep the ball low into the wind and that ball had got eaten up by the wind and comes up a little short of the hole [Music] here she is the woman of the moment making the biggest move today austin kim in the fairway second shot here we see 136 yeah she has gotten up on this little hump here and she has a little downhill lie which is going to help her keep it a little lower in the wind but she has tugged this just a little bit yeah that’s the difficulty when you got a short wedge in your hand the wind tends to have a little bit more influence on it that’s all right there she’s already getting the putter out look talked about austin last year at the founders cup her very first event and she finished sixth first full field event of the season took the pressure off she said and she could just go play not have to worry about am i going to keep my card or not then late in the year at the lote championship she was in contention made a double bogey on the 15th hole a three putt double and afterwards she said “i know why i made the mistakes i made and i learned the lesson moving forward i can learn and do better.” she she has that mindset of whatever happens good or bad i want to try to learn from it it seems like she has yeah as i was saying before a lot of the the rookies now or the younger players coming through they’re not really it’s not like the the good old days i hate using that phrase but it’s not like the good old days where like i would go and ask you know one of the veteran players it’s not really the same now they they kind of come out here and they feel like they’re a complete player and that’s what i noticed about austin i played a practice line with her uh liberty 2 years ago i think it was um last year and she was asking me a bunch of questions and i was i was always taken off guard because i’m not used to young players asking us veterans advice anymore and she’s messaged me she actually messaged me a few weeks ago just talking about she’s struggling to to get away from the results and stay in the process and i’ve been trying to help her a little bit as much as i can i’m not i’m going to take zero credit obviously um i’ll give you some oh thanks but no absolutely no credit she knows exactly what she’s doing but it’s refreshing you know she’s wanting to learn she’s hungry uh she seems to me like she’s a sponge taking in all this information and it’s showing through i honestly think she’s one to watch for the future i’ve always been very impressed with the ball striking but the fact that she is open to go out and ask questions is something that i’ve noticed and i think that that’s key if you want to keep on growing as a player we’re a little over a year from the soheim cup in the netherlands and you wonder is this a young american who could be representing the red white and blue there next year see her in a war ball just letting it rip in any format yeah it’s kind of a game i’d rather on my team that way rather on yours yeah your team’s going to be stout as well but jireina what we’ve seen from austin today besides brilliant golf is uh some really i think veteran almost uh savvy in in the way she’s managed when she hasn’t hit a green she’s she’s been brilliant she’s obviously been flawless hasn’t made a bogey but she’s been in a couple of difficult spots and especially i think about that second shot from the bunker at the at the second hole after making an opening birdie the athleticism to blast it out and then what was it a 15-footer or so for par yeah besides that hole i think she was a little unfortunate um with her she hasn’t really put herself in really big big trouble um i don’t know if that obviously as a player you want to know that you want to think that that’s on purpose but um yeah she is definitely when she misses a shot she is missed in the correct place where she can give herself an opportunity to get back in position and and make a par thing i’ve noticed is she hasn’t changed demeanor or anything she has just gone up out of business and uh she is her touch is just spot on today that was from 54 ft trying to win a major championship and she’s knocked it up there to within a couple mi is playing the ninth and was hole high left of the green pitched it up she’s got a few feet for birdie so a chance for miy to pick up a shot that touch though from austin we’ve seen it all day today beautiful that’s what you got to do and it’s so difficult people can talk about the approach shot the drives with this wind but the putting is so difficult especially from long range to judge it like that well done so me now yeah back up the hill into the wind into the green uphill this is going to be an extremely slow putt [Music] so it is a birdie from nile at the ninth she gets one back and so the lead is three and gino titkun has also made birdie in the ninth so three players under par and those two austin kim and gino titun three behind mi [Music] looks like it may not happen for charlie this week and the search continues mel for a major championship and she’s come so close so many times she’s got a couple of more chances one at the mundian championship which she’s played many times and and then at a golf course that few have seen royal port call yeah i mean you talk about moving the needle in the women’s game just by sheer play and personality and it’s this girl right here charlie hull she’s got it all she’s got she’s the rock star she’s got the swag i think if she i really do believe she’s she’s got not just one but many majors in her it’s just a matter of time and i really think she’s going to move the needle in the women’s game [Music] just an absolute fan favorite wherever she goes both sides of the atlantic won a couple of times here in the us including right here in the dallas fort worth area and now austin has this for par and i wonder you know jireina earlier talked mel about the first time she was in contention it was at this championship in 2012 and all of a sudden she started well back like austin did then the camera showed up and i’m thinking for austin the cameras have been there because it’s a featured group from whole one so she’s she’s had that all day uh and it hasn’t quite exactly been that for her yeah and i think that will help to be honest sometimes when you’re so far back and then you start playing well and you see all these cameras you’re like “oh wait okay whoa i must be doing better than i think i’m doing.” cuz sometimes you’re so in the zone the fact that she’s in a feature group this today i think will really help her stay calm and stay in the moment for par making it like uh easier than it is milk thanks for stopping in great seeing you and uh we’ll watch you tonight on live i appreciate thanks for having me judy rankin will step back in here austin kim making her way to the par three 13th miy lee with the birdie back to four under austin kim and gino titkin three shots back on this sunday in texas what golfers experience is pga of america’s gamechanging technology what makes it just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference [Music] everyone’s tire [Music] are you are you [Music] austin kim in our featured group and now the subject of u a lot of scrutiny here on this sunday in north texas she’s gone from nine shots back into a tie for second three back grant and judy with you and judy once again a last look at the 13 uh they often times call this the signature hole here it is a par 3 170 yds today and you can see how it is surrounded um by a higher bank and framed by trees a massive bunker starts at the way at the front left and goes all the way around the green um interesting hole location today it’s right in that back left corner uh in a way the green feeds that direction but in a way you really have to be wary of the left side you may have to be wary of austin kim just one birdie at this 13th but judy she keeps ticking off pars which as we know on this golf course in these conditions you’re actually gaining ground well she plays this hole well she then goes to 14 and 15 where she has a par five and a par4 uh that are both uh birdable um given her length certainly you heard mel say she thought the hole locations today were a little friendlier the scoring average today is 74 a 12 about a stroke and a half easier than it was yesterday yeah i would agree with the whole locations today i think you know there was the expectation of just as much wind as yesterday um we’ve had consistent wind but i don’t think it’s ever been as bad as it was yesterday and you and i have talked about this for those viewers um texas usually by the second half of june has calmed down spring is is when we see the most of the wind and this is this has been pretty serious wind for um late in late in june yeah such a wet spring but um course has dried out and so much of that is because of the work that gell hans and his partner jim wagner did to create a course that would drain well in this texas clay sand capped it and um it has been roasting this week as have all of the players one of the things that’s been hard this week is because of the way and the difficulty the course has played there have been considerable weights and you get a little momentum going in your game and uh you’re you’re trying not to overthink things um it it’s hard and and if you’re handling it well more power to you but it’s it’s hard when there are long waits when you have uh maybe just made a birdie or two and uh you’re feeling it and you you’re ready to go and then you go sit on a cooler for 15 minutes not good and hope it doesn’t cool you off yeah four hours to play 12 holes you can do the math and figure out where we’re headed again well as you have said and as we see left is no good but this swing is great and with her power and trajectory jireina you’ve you’ve talked about the trajectory that austin kim has and that is a huge difference maker on greens that are otherwise very difficult to hold yeah she is definitely able to flight her driver to get maximum diff distance but also her irons hit them high when she needs to get the ball to stop and hit them low when she needs to go into the wind she has hit this on a rope just right at the flag heading straight at the tv tower that’s a veteran shot isn’t it judy that’s a wonderful play it it’s so hard to make yourself play that 20 ft to the right of that flag stick but it is so smart to do that i mean you you need to count on making a putt if you get a little left kick good bonus right but you know don’t challenge that right now there’s a little bit of a golf course left it’s one thing to have the strategy it’s another thing to to execute it and that’s what we often say you know it’s not so hard to know what to do uh execution comes into play and so far seems impervious to the pressure we just saw the touch on that 50ft putt to within two feet and a relatively easy tap in for par now charlie pulls the tea out of the hair she had one club and she didn’t have it on a tea having a discussion with her caddy adam they switched clubs and then she reach reached for the tea and pulled it out and teed it up this is seven iron seems like a really big seven iron but she has hit this beautifully at the tower drawing in [Music] mile lee the leader just making the turn after a birdie at the ninth meni’s two over today her lead is now three somi lee is next she’s headed a little lower but this is headed to the right side of the green definitely a safe shot yeah i mean pretty clear the right side is the bailout uh left side is totally to be avoided here at this par three and the best of the three not surprisingly the player who’s the hottest austin kim will have a birdie putt take a look at our insights by kpmg most rounds in the 60s and major since 2017 mi lee had one of those yesterday a flawless 69 but it is austin kim who has been flawless today and she’s making a run at miy [Music] at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference when further with t-mobile for business [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] heat heat [Music] [Music] all right featured groups continues and austin kim is going to have a putt of just over 22 ft to that hole right there in just a moment chance to get a little closer to miy lee charlie hull and somi lee have putts before austin and this is charlie pretty obviously the switch in clubs at the te was from a sixiron to a seven iron and uh oh go in the hole what a putt wow what a putt so maybe she did hit the right club after all that was for just the second birdie of the day at the 13th tap in for charlie five over par at the moment she is tied for 16th nelly corda has fought her way back from some early stumbles birdie’s at 9 and 10 for nelly looks like it may be too late for her nelly is three over for the championship and that five over power for uh charlie hall is just one over for the day yeah and again charlie was six over well out of it after round one fought her way back to get to the weekend of the great 69 on friday how about this putt for somi lee and jarina how close to austin’s line was that it was pretty close austin is moving her ball mark back to um and uh as we got out here obviously from the tea i couldn’t see exactly where austin’s ball ended up but this is where you want to be on the screen that was a phenomenal shot and uh especially with this wind it is obviously been blowing all day long but we have there’s like a little canyon here that the creek runs through and it is just whipping through it we’ve talked about how we’ve adjusted our definitions of what a great shot is and u week to week judy a 22t putt on a par three might not be considered a great shot but today i think we could call that pretty darn great absolutely this um this is a this is a tough hole and um you know one of the things you were charged with standing on the tea was try to hit it 15 to 20 ft right of the hole location sometimes players find that really hard to do but she was very disciplined the low round of the week she has definitely go ahead she has definitely got a good line on this um she just had somi move her mark so that putt must have ran right by her mark and she has a great idea what this is going to do kind of grain change a couple times in this putt yes i think it’s a little down where her feet are definitely back into her and then once she gets on top of that ridge it goes back down with the grain yeah that’s exactly what it looks like to us that grainated up didn’t it in the middle yep that’s not in but she has been so steady and in fact austin today looking at her total putts that was just her 18th putt of the day on the 13th hole so if she makes that par putt she’ll have 19 putts in 13 holes charlie’s done she’s off and waiting charlie knows how to save her energy have you noticed that got a lot of it we see all the coins down here and there was a chunk of change at stake not just for the winner judy.$1.8 8 million to the champion but a little over $1 million for second uh which by the way that’s an enormous paycheck and would be more than austin has won in her professional life on the lpga tour certainly so a couple of pars for hall and for somi lee i don’t even know how you deposit a million dollar check yeah with a smile on your face there you go tied for the highest in women’s golf with the us women’s open and that increased this year from 1.6 when kpmg and pga of america joined with the lpga to rebrand this major the purse was $3.5 million now it’s 12 10 years ago it was just 10 years ago and just a couple three feet but another test for austin kim she should be expecting this to go a little to her left confident not babying it in bogey free and as we update the leaderboard she’s just gotten closer to the lead meni lee with a bogey at the 10th and austin kim makes her way to the par five 14th then the drivable 15th two behind miy says what took you so long he’s up there already uh time of day wise how how much earlier does um austin post a final score yeah austin is in the fifth this is the fifth to last group and uh she teed off about 45 minutes before mji did so that means mi’s looking at 13 14th hole at least three holes with a score posted at least yeah so here’s the 14th one more time judy yeah this is a this is a pretty good par five 518 yds that first shot off the tea is straight uphill and it is blind to a fairway with a big slope from the left to the right um it is a tricky layup which so many of them have been a par fives have been at this golf course so the layup is right over that large bunker in the left center of the fairway trying to get the ball in between those three uh with um anywhere from a full sand wedge shot to a short pitch um into this green although the shot into this green today a little longer than that flag you just saw because it’s 18 paces deep in the green here’s charlie looking a little bit left it’s over here in the fescue just saw it sink i believe par five if you don’t think it’s the worst i thing to be in the rough on a par five but because the layoff is so tricky it’s not a good idea straight into the breeze austin’s hit the fairway each day so far she’s made par all three days [Music] just one of these par fives has been reachable even for the biggest hitters like austin kim but today two drivable par4s and she’s already made birdie at one of them she’s got another one coming up after this there’s a repetitiveness to her golf the way it looks the way she finishes the way she watches the ball flight um and that’s something you know players work at all the way got three really good ball strikers in this group somi lee is next she’s 17th on tour this season that combo of total driving and greens and regulation good one well we’ve gone from secretariat to a possible photo finish here in north texas miley lee’s fourshot lead is down to just two and austin kim trying to put together the biggest final round comeback in women’s major history what golfers experience is pga of america’s gamechanging technology what makes it possible 5g advanced network solutions from t-mobile for business from coaches using ai better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference [Music] the pga of america and our more than 30,000 pga of america golf professionals we love this game major championship sunday you never know what’s going to happen today austin kim went out tied for 10th place nine shots behind miley lee today she’s got the best round going four underpar bogey free she’s just two back after miy made bogey at the 10th and she’s got the tough 11th and 12th coming up plus the 13th which is a brute and meanwhile austin has just driven one 269 yards that’s one of the longest drives at 14 all day you didn’t mention straight up yeah straight up straight into the wind we’ve seen big hitters hitting at 240 this week and it’s in the fairway most importantly here’s somi with her second somi has about 265 to the hole she’s looking to try to get over this huge bunker other guards the left side of this fairway she probably has about 165 to carry that she has a hit a great shot right in the middle of the fairway charlie went left off the tea yeah she’s over there just left of the rope line however i took a peek and the back of her ball doesn’t have much grass the grass is all just towards the front of the ball so she should have no problem getting it through that that rough so she can challenge that big yawning bunker absolutely she’s probably only got about 145 or so that’s not including the wind to carry the bunker [Music] [Music] great shot back into position [Music] and now austin we saw her earlier at the third hole with a chance to get it up somewhere near the green lay back to a yardage that she liked and went on to make par you got the penalty area as you noted earlier up there protecting the green here at 14 so let’s see where she opts to go and what number she wants to leave herself i the penalty area all the way around the green i i just she might could get there but i don’t think she can i don’t think she can take the chance you’re right judy she only is only going to have 231 to the front of this green however with that entire definitely including this wind i would guess that front green front of the green is playing at least 250 and there’s no margin for error [Music] she’s backed off it a couple times i don’t know if there’s something she must be uneasy about or doesn’t like [Music] [Music] yeah just carries the bunker by about 15 yards great shot [Music] said she grew up just trying to hit the ball as far as she could i i think about what you said earlier about that being very much the opposite of what girls were taught yeah long years ago some years ago yeah girls were taught to um be be perfect swingers um she looks pretty perfect to me we’ll just assume you’re not going to hit it very far yeah boy it’s a new day if you can hit it far and look that good with a swing on balance as as you noted um almost every swing a thing of beauty to piggy back on to what judy says um when i was starting out golf and in high school i had a teacher by the name of tom valardi and that was what he had me do and we had a bucket of balls and he would say “okay i want you to swing the hard your hardest and i would swing my hardest.” and he was like “okay that was about 90% let me get 95%.” and let me tell you by the time i got done hitting that bucket of balls i felt like i ran a marathon he goes “we can always fix the direction let’s get you some distance.” and you had distance what was one of your good driving averages jarina she doesn’t like to brag i don’t think she’s going to tell us i’m going to say she drove it around 260 or in the low 260s sorry judy i was out of range there and we were asking how how long you hit it at your at your longest on tour yeah i was probably about 265 [Music] all right so austin’s going to go first here we were wondering about austin and what number she might have had in mind earlier this year when she was playing in china she was asked “what do you think it’ll take to win tomorrow do you have a number in mind?” she says “i don’t like to think about numbers i’m going to go as low as i can go.” and today she’s going lower than anyone else she’s four under and she doesn’t have to go a whole lot lower to have a great chance to win heard some interesting data recently which is we all think we like to lay up i always did lay up to my favorite shot uh this data says that uh that’s that’s not the best result the best result is from the people who get the closest to the green so i think this was a shot to try to get a distance they were going to like absolutely she has about 92 yards great low penetrating ball flight [Music] long considerably long [Music] so hard to judge and she’ll have a putt for birdie you’re getting to one of the higher points on the golf course [Music] charlie it’s 80 yards from charlie and she has just about made it [Music] good shot just could not uh stop it near the hole and you don’t want to flirt with that left side everything pushing it to the right now somi with her third so me with 61 yards definitely going to have to f with that left side of the green where it slopes away she’s going to want to get this close [Music] yeah and is rewarded lovely [Music] and so somi lee who’s trying to move up she would with that into the top 10 she’ll have a great chance at birdie here top 10 make it back next year to the kpmg women’s pga championship at hazeline let’s go the other way good decision well um austin was really looking at trying to have a birdie opportunity here there’s there’s no doubt she and her caddy uh worked on a little strategy uh for what kind of third shot they wanted to play i think she struck a pretty nice shot but it did not pay off um with a good result so long now putt right back what looks to me right back into the that flag and um you know now now you’re working to two putt for sure you’ve you’ve kind of taken away your serious birdie opportunity take a look at this graphic we’ve been talking about the all-time lpga record in major championships largest comeback mi lee who’s trying to keep that from happening today did it at the amundi evian championship in 2021 jung and lee six had a five-shot lead mi beat her in a playoff kari at the chevron championship remember her hauling out on the 72nd hole at mission hills and then patty sheen at this championship in 1983 [Music] i do remember kari webb holding out morgan prele was playing with her mikey patterson was caddying for kari he’s with miy today so full circle moment austin who’s two shots back 35 feet away and she has answered every challenge no matter how delicate the shot with a pitch or a chip bunker shot long putt she’s done it all austin’s putts moving from the right to the left she just asked charlie to move her ball mark it’s all going to be a matter of how much the wind’s going to affect this [Music] well if it’s not going to go in you want to give yourself don’t you as uh little work left as possible tapins keep you from having gray hair austin just 24 years old she’s a little young for gray hair a little bit academic all-america at vanderbilt talented smart august kim played on the epson tour for many years and august is now in medical school at vanderbilt [Music] so sisters that are high achievers yes and and uh austin has talked about going to law school perhaps at some point she’ll have the money for it after this brilliant day charlie for birdie similar align austin so she definitely would have got a teach from austin’s ball similar result though neither um got the turn from right to left that they thought [Music] i definitely think that’s the fight between the reel versus the field i’m sure they’re standing over it with that wind beating at their chest and thinking it’s going to take this ball off the green almost right [Music] one over today it’s pretty good it might be a little bit easier today scoring average is a little bit lower you do have two holes that have been moved up both seven and 15 but not easy by any stretch couple of double bogeies for somi but this for a birdie and this would move her into the top 10 [Music] but she had a beautiful little short shot [Music] [Music] and there’s a reason she’s fifth on tour in scoring average 69.9 this season and that birdie does indeed move her to plus four and a tie for ninth [Music] couple of feet here for austin kim this for par to stay tied for second [Music] touch the right forearm touch that right shoulder [Music] steady as she goes austin kim to the drivable par4 15th down by two at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference when i grow up i want to make a difference easy you [Music] the 2025 kpmg women’s pga championship featured group coverage is brought to you by kpmg and by t-mobile for business exclusive 5g solutions partner of the kpmg women’s pga championship ship [Music] a wild windy week here in north texas and nothing different today a leaderboard that began with miy lee up by four now has austin kim from nine shots back when the round began just two off the lead as she gets here judy to this 15th hole moved up again today 235 yards for one of the biggest hitters in the game and less than driver again as she did on seven when she drove the green two putted for birdie what do you see jireina yeah she has 207 to the front of this green however it is straight uphill about 10 yards so 227 to the front of this the screen she’s going to want to utilize the left part of the screen kind of at the middle there’s a huge hump that will feed it back to the hole and it is she has hit a big sweeping fade and it’s going to catch the bunker bunker’s down to the right and that is hole high in the bunker and i’m not quite sure if that little tongue that of grass that goes into the bunker is going to make this shot um harder than it already is specifically what’s the wind jina the wind is a little bit into but mainly left to right right here right here that wind pushing it right yeah but we’ll see about the stance for austin kim [Music] first to play with was somi lee who made the birdie at the 14th [Music] driver up the hill out there left of the green left side of your screen [Music] t moved way forward today to make this 235 yards with a wind um that’s to a great degree back into the player’s face straight up the hill uh you see that nest of large and smaller bunkers to the short and right of this green uh i think the farthest bunker is where we’re going to find austin kim um but it gets a little bit more level up on top still a left to right slope in this green at this short par4 um often times early in the week they would lay up to the whole nest of bunkers and play wedges up the hill uh but they have made it um a goal four par four today adding to the drama as if there wasn’t enough already yimi no made two eagles yesterday on the drivable par4s 7 and 15 and there’s a look at what jarina was telling us about how the wind is mostly off the left but we saw austin hit a really tough bunker shot at the second hole did well to get it to within about 15 ft and made it well this will be easier than that because it’s not looking like it’s going to run crazy away from her this one um back kind of into that wind and up into the slope so uh an easier an easier shot to control but we still haven’t seen if she has a comfortable stance or takeaway [Music] jarina have you had a chance to survey her yes it uh she is a very athletic girl and we’re going to have to see what that is all about here it’s going to take every ounce of her athleticism to uh i think she’s going to be standing outside the bunker ball well behold her feet well below her feet and trying to get this ball hoisted in the air to get it above this probably five five and 1/2t lip she’s having to contend with [Music] charlie in that thick native grass she looks like she’s playing in an open championship for a women’s british doesn’t she kind of does yeah she went and did a a media day for the aig women’s open and they they put her in a a boxing robe and gave her some boxing gloves to kind of create that pugilistic feel and it’s kind of what it is like in a major isn’t it you against the course and it’s a heavyweight battle certainly this week any number of lies and areas that look just like this charlie’s lie is actually pretty decent um she’s going to have to contend with the wispy long grass other than that it’s sitting up nicely [Music] okay so she’ll have that for birdie somi lee is a little left of the green hit a good one up there and now here comes the challenge for austin kim you can see where the flag is and you can see where her ball is and that little tongue you talked about judy you know it’s a birdie hole you’d like to make a birdie but uh you’re in a situation here where you really uh one of your first concerns is don’t do no harm don’t do any harm um just putting surface is a good shot if it gets close fortunate oh she did that didn’t she so it’s the second time today that she’s been in a slightly awkward spot in a bunker go back to the second she had just made birdie and this looked a little unlucky and then she blasted out and you thought this was about as well as she could have done yeah it was a dangerous shot in a different sort of way she had no ability to put any spin on the ball and the green was running away from her uh so i thought she hit a really good shot there and a great putt part of her bogeyree day so she’s had one bunker shot with her front foot her left foot out of the bunker and one with her right foot out so somi lee actually dripped onto the green after we left and so this is an eagle putt for somi yeah a really long putt straight up the hill from left to right had the line didn’t it yeah she read it beautifully players have struggled this week and it has it’s been very frustrating to them with these the changes in grain where it’s down grain where it’s into the grain and so on and uh you just have to work at that as hard as you can i think um as it’s been said earlier in the week players from florida who are very bermuda savvy yeah like austin kim um you know maybe handle this a little bit better well we can see how shiny it was looking at somi on that previous part which means it was going dead into the grain from where she was and she did leave it a little bit short all right austin kim this for birdie should it fall she would be one off the lead with three to play [Music] terina a little flatter section of the green way up here it there is it is flat around the hole however where austin’s putting from it is not flat she just gave me a three i saw a three on her aim point fingers she was going back between a three and a four and that could be as much as 20 in okay good info wow the touch in these high leverage moments has just been so good and she is going to remain bogey free use that athleticism one more time well it is an opportunity missed but no damage done well and and when you uh hit a shot into a bunker i guess that’s a little bit bad luck that you’re not able to uh try to create a a good bunker shot you just have to uh make sure you get the ball on the green which is what she had to do and she did a really good job yeah the architects would tell us that they are hazards and uh if you’re in there then take your chances she paid that onestroke price i think i think you’re right charlie for birdie [Music] chance to go back to back here for somi lee this would move her into a tie for seventh place at three over talking about the richest purse in women’s golf that’s the first time i’ve seen somebody turn the their back on the hole to do aim point there’s so much about a apoint i really do not understand because i’m i’m in charlie hall’s world where you’re plum i’m a plumb bobber i shouldn’t admit that i might lose my job no no we’ve got jarina to handle all of our aim point math sell me for birdie this has been a great fight from her today she’s made a couple of double bogeies and she said a couple of days ago “it’s going to be hard i know i’m going to make mistakes i just don’t want to panic.” and there were some panic moments out there but she’s back to where she started even with a couple of doubles yeah she’s not short by any means but she is the shortest of these three and she has just birdied the two holes uh that you you really uh think you need to take advantage of the par five and this reachable par4 charlie for par oh she’s the one that taught us that uh golf is not life and death but some days you wonder to the 16th they go and austin kim still two back [Music] what golfers experience is pga of america’s gamechanging technology what makes it possible 5g advanced network solutions from t-mobile for business from coaches using ai analytics to players using ar data to find the best path to the cup t-mobile helps pga of america reliably connect with 5g from the course to the clubhouse pga of america goes further with t-mobile for business when i grow up i want to make a difference easy you can do it i want to inspire someone i want to find my place in the world when i grew up i became a pg of america golf professional and it all came true pj of america golf professionals we love this game at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference [Music] [Music] [Music] three holes left for austin kim she has been bogey free and brilliant today four under par two off the lead and a big t-shot here at the tough 16th [Music] long par4 downwind no fairway bunkers no greenside bunkers penalty area to the right and no problem and that really looks good wow she has put on a show today only missed one fairway four birdies and no hiccups charlie on the tea oh welcome [Music] first play after the backto-back birdies somi lee uh looking right [Music] mi lee playing the 13th austin kim is at 16 mi has a putt of 70 ft coming up well she just did a big part of the challenge here at 16 judy she found the fairway with a good drive how about the rest of it yeah it’s really very straight away other than there’s a slope in the fairway from the left to the right uh that that rough to the left is pretty punishing out of place from which you want to play but penalty area to the right so right in the driving area is the really biggest part of this fairway uh and now you’re playing straight downwind uh to a green that doesn’t have any bunkers uh the hole today 22 paces deep in the green just a little bit left of center and um it’s a green where you can run the ball up if need be and it might be that it needs to be that way downwind m well it has been today the as you saw the well it’s now the fifth rather the fourth toughest hole and with the wind at her back a 305 yd drive really kind of off the right mostly but a little help from austin she did most of the hard work there third toughest this hole for the week 22 birdies all week here at the 16th hole and almost as many double bogeies or worse [Music] it’s been a long week uh when practice started on monday proam on tuesday practice on wednesday tuesday a really bad day with the wind much like yesterday and uh but the wind every day and uh uh players will players will be tired come tonight they really will be uh they were uh in michigan last week mhm uh you’re going back to michigan michigan next week next week for the dow championship where austin played well last year the dow championship is always a a favorite of players and she played with grace kim no relation from australia partnership event uh and you could give grace kim a little love right now cuz she played a heck of a round yesterday she did she went from last place into 10th and today has not been the day that she was hoping for but she shot the low round of the day yet so that the aussies maybe a coincidence maybe not handled the wind best grace kma 68 and minjilia 69 yesterday well they’re pretty good at handling heat i don’t think heat has been nearly as much of an issue today as earlier in the week uh but the aussies and miy lee certainly from perth they know heat and wind yes it does according to my weather app in my climate controlled studio seat here say 101 heat index today jarina can probably give us validation of that or not yeah it definitely is a little i don’t even want to use the word cooler but it is cooler than it was last couple days there is some cloud cover which is nice somi lee here with 182 to the pin 160 to the front [Music] well she landed it short and it just hit soft and stayed there you would have thought it was perfect [Music] to austin chem way down there 300 plus as you saw 305 charlie next flag almost looks like it’s coming across now yeah yeah it is whipping right now i would guess it’s probably blowing at least 20 miles an hour down and a little from the players right charlie has 171 149 to the front guessing she’s probably going to land this 10 or so short it’s just not taking that jump to the putting surface and you got to be shaking your head because you think if i landed on the putting surface uh not much chance to stop it this edge so coming well now i’m wondering if austin saw those two shots from the fairway i’m on the left side of the fairway and i’m blocked out by the big hump that’s just short of the green so hopefully austin was able to see what happened and adjust her play according so you know jarina i’m not sure our camera was just just a minute ago and is now behind her and i’m not sure we can see those golf balls no okay so austin with 151 129 front [Music] oh that’s one of the best we can see that one and it is close austin kim with a putt for birdie at the 16th coming up to get within one a legacy 75 years in the making and just getting started the lpga this little girl starting out with her father and pro bob green on the forest park aaa course in st louis is one of the most promising child prodigies golf has seen since bobby jones less than 4 feet tall and weighing only 45 lbs judy drives around 120 yards after only a year at the game who could have imagined where golf would take me to the lpga tour where i had a hall of fame career and then to an opportunity in tv where i’ve shared some of the games great moments they say if you’re lucky in life you find work you love that you’re good at and that makes a difference to have found that twice in my life has been a blessing beyond measure to all the people who’ve helped me along on this magnificent journey thank you i’m judy ranken and i still drive off [Music] yeah and here it was last april receiving the pga of america’s lifetime achievement award in journalism from the coo of the pga of america at the time craig kesler and now the incoming commissioner of the lpg tour you had no idea at that point no i didn’t and um and you guys have uh made me smile twice this week with that little piece uh thank you so much touch touched my heartstrings and um uh it’s a lot of fun to be back with you again it’s been great having you even even if we have a different role it’s fun it’s good let’s let’s go watch these players let’s do it and i just think we saw those amazing videos of you as a youngster a little pee-wee golfer winning all those championships and all of these players like you young players dreaming of something big and austin kim may well be on the verge of it here somi lee has this third at the 16th everybody’s got a story they’re trying to build theirs i’m sorry jireina pretty good [Music] somi has that for par austin kim is already getting a read and aim pointing this putt that she’s going to have to get within one well shineti wanosan the young tie has moved it to one underpar she’s won each of the last two years on the lpga tour doesn’t get into contention very much when she does she tends to win she’s only 21 years old and already with two wins and she like austin kim has a chance to post a number she’s playing in the group right behind this one charlie [Music] just like so me opted to use the putter i don’t blame them with that front of the green pitching away from them down green downwind and both of them have judged that nicely and they both hit a little better second shot than they were rewarded would agree mile just made par at 13 a two putt from 70 ft and mi trying to hang on for dear life here but austin kim is staring down a putt for birdie that would get her to within one a 15footer here at the 16th [Music] all i can say is a huge putt it’s a bogey for titon so she’ll fall back to even three behind with five to go you have a read here jarita yeah i think she’s aimointed this as a two i want to say from her left to right looking at it sitting behind it it doesn’t look like there’s much movement but she definitely has to be feeling something in her feet you got to be feeling something in her heart pounding it’s not pounding like it will if it goes in mine’s pounding i’m nervous [Music] same routine every single time [Music] to get within one oh my it redirected it clearly caught a piece of the cup two incredible shots and a good putt that goes begging this performance is something special from a player who has only been in this spot a couple of times and never on a stage quite this big par for somi lee here after a couple of birdies in a row [Music] same corner of the cup unforgiving i think it’s the wind it’s it’s blowing really really hard right now coming from somi’s right and austin’s left on those both both those putts charlie undaunted leaves the flag zip in flag in they’ll head to the 17th where austin made double yesterday one of two that she made that you would have said knocked her out of contention she had other ideas and this putt let’s see if it goes in this time no i think she saw it falling and the wind was blowing the ball away from the hole in just that much and judy a chance for redemption here at the 17 for austin it’s 117 yds today you see there’s just a there’s a little notch uh back in that left side and that’s where the hole is today it reads as 22 back from the front of the green but if you take a straight line to this whole location it’s going to be more like 10 or 11 uh back from the front uh clearly the shot would be hit it hit it close hit it 10 12 ft to the right of this whole location [Music] and there have been 10 birdies here at the 17th left to right crosswind left to right crosswind [Music] as you think about the leaderboard with mi successfully getting through 13 with that two putt she’s now going to the par five 14th by no means any stretch a guaranteed birdie but then the drivable 15th you wonder if austin needs one more birdie or get to two under par if you need one out of the last two then this would be the one where you’d want to get it right here because 18 is a beast hit this on a good line that is definitely where you want to miss miss the shot on the screen [Music] why’d she back off i mean we told you it’s hatch chasing weather and charlie with a nice catch [Music] hat in hand now to the tea here at 17 [Music] charlie with the wedge here really difficult whole location with this wind howling off the left and we just felt a huge gust up by the green and she has taken a great line [Applause] i wonder if that ball didn’t start at the left edge of the green wow great shot keep going [Music] charlie’s going to give that return that hat to cinder [Music] maybe autograph it set up at the left edge [Music] it’s definitely a little flatter ball flight as you can see that it landed a little past high yeah right on line tough to do good t-shot from charlie birdie attempt coming up for austin kim two shots back with two to go at kpmg we make the difference it’s not just something we say it’s what we do by developing brighter insights bolder solutions and better outcomes it’s how our people make the difference when i grow up i want to make a difference easy you can do it i want to inspire someone i want to find my place in the world when i grew up i became a pg of america golf professional and it america goes further with t-mobile for business [Music] [Music] well there’s one particularly interested spectator and that’s chris kim austin’s dad and he’s no doubt refreshing the phone and checking the scores he see he downloaded the app and so now he can get the very latest but he doesn’t have all the views we have that’s our advantage that you have yeah well you too where all of our team all of the technical team behind me have given me yes there lots of views but who’s more nervous austin or dad dad mhm yeah he’s still able to enjoy it here we go jarina this for birdie yeah i got this about 8 to 10 inches out right to left into the wind a little into the grain and that is the first sign of nerves i’ve seen austin show all day long all right so an enormous par putt coming up i think chris is listening to our broadcast i spoke with him earlier today hi chris so chris can probably answer that question who’s more nervous him or austin got the airpods in of all things first year we’ve ever done featured group coverage of the kpmg women’s pga championship and we get austin today and she delivers somi lee close but not quite charlie with a great look at birdie ninjally back on the 14th hole leading it by two [Music] charlie’s putt’s gonna want to go a little left and in charlie moves it back to five over tied for 13th [Music] three and a half ft we’re par here for austin [Music] hasn’t won on the lpga tour but she has a history of coming up nails in the biggest moments to even get to the lpga tour that story in a moment first for par is that gusty here yeah yeah thought so back to the routine right huge time after time after time austin kim stays bogey free and she stays tied for second two shots back to the tough par4 finishing hole when we come back in our featured groups what golfers experience is pga of america’s gamechanging technology what makes it possible 5g advanced network solutions from t-mobile for business from coaches using ai analytics to 5g solutions partner of the kpmg women’s pga championship it’s been a great week here hot windy tough and austin kim is showing her toughness today going out nine shots off the lead when the round began bogey free four under and now alone in second place two shots off the lead with ming lee back at the 14th hole austin kim makes her way to the 18th t a birdie would really put the heat on mi lee a par would still post a number that would be a challenge for mi to beat shaneti wanaya makes a bogey at 16 so she and her fellow young tide gino titigan are tied at even par and you talk about a difficult hole to knee to birdie it’s the toughest hold today there’s been one birdie all day long and it’s tough from start to finish beginning with his t-shot and charlie has the honor trina is it mostly a helping wind at their backs it is straight down wind for their t-shirt it’s a little different than earlier in the week 449 the end of the fairway is at the 280 mark bunker in the center of the fairway has to be avoided most go to the right of it [Music] this is just right of it well played long par4 length is not an advantage here because you cannot uh you can’t just let it rip off the tea because it the panther creek crosses and that 280 mark 275 let’s say keeps you in the fairway downwind [Music] she’s been brilliant off the tea all day needs a fairway here seem to like it this is absolutely perfect wow yeah get down there as far as you can because it really makes the second shot easier judy she’s playing like it’s a tuesday morning practice round with that kind of poise the rhythm and the comfort level you’d never know a major championship is at stake another one right down the middle i will tell you the leader is a worldclass player but it sure looks to me like austin kim is on her way to being um known as a worldass player and that world class player mji lee just birdied the 14th so it’s a three-shot lead for miy as we take a look from high above this 18th yeah 449 yds par4 uh the problem with that 449 is if you’re longer than some others you really can’t get any closer because you have to avoid that bunker that we’ve just flown by and stop the ball short of the rough short of panther creek so everybody plays a similar uh middle iron i would say maybe a little less than a middle iron into this green that is perched up is well bunkered as you see and 18 today has a back left hole location [Applause] cross that suspension bridge kind of feels like you’ve been on one from the moment you got on the property and the suspense continues and from the very beginning austin kim looked ready for her closeup in this major championship two great shots at the first which has been so tough this week and this third almost perfect [Music] and then at the second we saw the bunker shot a moment ago a highlight of it awkward stance blasted to that point and that was a big par save yeah big par save early in the round and then at the seventh drivable moved up a bit today she took three wood here [Music] just held on she would two putt for birdie the first putt was just within tap-in range and then to the eighth judy this is when you thought this could really happen uh no doubt this was one of the prettiest shots downwind that anyone played all week less than 20% of the field hit this green in regulation earlier in the week tap in birdie there she made a birdie at the ninth eight pars on the back nine for austin kim which in these difficult conditions have kept her right in it and i almost think she made three and a half on the par 416 she played the hole beautifully she hit such a gorgeous putt that uh could have uh sort of hit the hole and lipped out it sure could have dropped i fear if uh she can’t make this happen for a win it is 14 and 15 that cost her uh she really didn’t give herself a birdie opportunity on either of those holes the par five or the or the par4 that was drivable today um as grant just said last birdie was at the ninth hole but she’s played some pretty solid golf since then and um if she pulls off a birdie here it’ll be one of the few all week on this 18th hole well austin kimyson went to the final event of the epson tour season in 2023 needing a good finish to earn her lpga card top 10 players that year earned a trip to the lpga tour and austin going into the final round was two shots off the lead tied for fourth she shot a 65 her mom pilljo was caddying for her and she won the tour championship she finished third on the money list and earned her spot on the lpga tour as you noted earlier just getting to the lpga tour sometimes uh can be a challenge austin got here with a clutch performance in that season ending tour championship and now she has come up so clutch here today in this final round and she at the very least has a chance to win a major just a minute till that green clears at 18 um she can give this second shot a fair amount of thought it’s the last full swing she should have to make well i shouldn’t say that the last full swing she’ll make in this round of golf she’ll hope that uh by hook or crook there might be some more full swings today in some sort of playoff but uh miy lee is a pretty strong uh strong player strong minded player and um i i’m not sure uh that she will let this go coming down the stretch but plenty of hard holes including including this one yep plenty of places where you can hit a pretty good shot and still not have a perfect result and judy she still has a chance to win but no matter what happens what will this do for austin kim moving forward oh boy lots because uh she may have played under a little different kind of pressure today uh but she certainly put herself in a situation to play under some pressure and um aside from pressure and aside from being pleased uh with her performance no matter what she does here she’s going to cash a big check [Music] shineti want to say just made birdie at the 17th you’ve got a two-way tie for second mi is playing the 15th the green is clear jireina charlie hall with her second charlie with 199 to the pin 176 to the front of the green is where she’s going to be looking unlike some of these other holes there is no front of the green that these players are going to be able to utilize to help them bounce the ball up and keep this ball on the green [Music] now that’s when i say a player has played uh executed a really good golf shot and yet no birdie opportunity i’m going to blame that on mother nature one birdie today it came from nana curts madson way back in the pack with not any pressure like austin kim is feeling she made a 50-footer but that’s how you make a birdie at 18 but austin kim with a great t-ot yeah austin has 170 left 147 to the front with this wind the way it’s blowing looks like she has a w some type of wedge in her hand which is going to be huge for her to keep this ball on the green and give herself a great look at birdie my experience is you’re better off to go after something downwind versus trying to hit a little shot like that maybe oh she went after it and she’s rewarded with a putt for birdie and a spinning shot haven’t seen many of those we’ve seen a lot of head spinning but and a really big smile to her caddy yeah brendan woolly trusty hand two very excellent uh layups off the tea from those two players we might double our birdie count the 18th here in our featured group [Music] austin kim makes her way to the green at the 18th as our week of featured groups coverage here from the kpmg women’s pga championship comes to a close judy from the very first shot on thursday morning when we got to see nelly cordon go titikun and lydia co it has been fascinating to watch the world’s best take on fields ranch east and today what a treat to watch a young player kind of come of age before our very eyes you know it’s the first time i’ve really watched austin kim rather than a shot or two as a viewer on television and i am more than impressed um i i think you’ll you’ll you’ll see her often um and you’ll see her for quite a long time if that’s what she chooses to do she has a really really sound golf game and uh the fact that she’s handled the elements uh the wind all week uh and the pressure of looking like she might get a chance to win today is pretty impressive it has been and not just as you noted the the shot making but uh the poise that she’s shown today yeah um uh she’s handled she’s handled everything that’s come her way today um extremely well uh i think we should probably make the point that this is not a 19-year-old but a 24year-old young woman who is um ready for this role she’s starting to play college graduate from vanderbilt an epson tour graduate from a couple of years ago she had to ace that final exam on the epson tour as we just told you to get to the lpga tour but proven to be a quick study sixth place in her very first start as an lpga member last year got herself into a late tea time early this season and now she has stood up to the major championship pressure charlie is back here behind the green and she’ll go with the putter i don’t blame her the grain is straight into her as well as into the wind a little downhill so hard to get it to the hole pretty good she kind of looked at the fringe like it bobbled through the fringe or something that she didn’t like ladies and gentlemen please welcome to the 18th green from the republic of korea somi lee from florida please welcome austin kim and from england please welcome charlie pull that’s the voice of courtney canel who’s the director of golf at mira vista country club a great club in fort worth and a member of the north texas pga section announcing the players up to the 18th green proud graduate of abalene christian university courtney is here and it’s a big week here for golf in the state of texas for the first time this state hosting this championship but now austin kim will stand over a putt to get her to two under and make miley lee sweat if it’s possible just a little bit more down the stretch darina what are you seeing i’m seeing right to left she’s probably going to play this about 8 in outside the right uphill the grain looks like she could be a little into the grain and that could also affect the break as well this for the low round of the week the low round of the championship a 67 should it fall that didn’t look like a player trying to cozy one up there no what a what a really good solid round of golf we have uh witnessed today and um challenging conditions with the wind tough conditions uh with no wind at all difficult golf course that was a great run one that you don’t look back on do you and say “wow i wish i could maybe give it a better effort.” that looked really good for a long time well if you’d asked me when she made the turn i would have said there’s a couple more birdies in this in this player today uh but as it turns out if she makes this last little putt it’s a even par back nine somi lead for birdie she’ll play this right to left okay well there’s the second birdie of the day the 18th and that’s going to punch somi lee’s ticket to next year’s kpmg women’s pga championship moves her into a tie for seventh and what a fight from somi today little pat on the back from herky who is um saying good job hanging in there and way to go birdie in the last hole not easy to do well here comes a putt after all that she’s done today that she must have this to finish at one under to match the low score of the week with 68 austin chem for par it was a great round and it may get even better we’ll see win or lose we just watched a young player grow up on this sunday in north texas yeah for sure so 368 am i correct this week 368’s best rounds of the week charlie for her par and another good showing in a major championship for charlie and the veteran with uh a firm handshake for austin kim she’s seen the very best she’s been one of the very best and she knows that she just saw one of the very best rounds you’ll ever see in a major championship at the moment the deficit is three mi’s got the short 15th and then some tough holes coming up might just be a little tearary might have been a lot of emotion built up in there and now a little relief [Music] now she can let it go i wouldn’t leave if i were austin kim maybe push that flight back a bit we’ll see if it’s enough miley lee closing in on a third different major championship good weeks for lexi and nelly not quite enough well judy it has been an absolute delight just as fun as i thought it’d be what do you say we do it again sometime i would love that sitting next to you uh makes all of this that much easier a long week thanks to everyone who made it possible the executive producer chris olmire our producer jim la pera luc cusero our director and the dozens and dozens of women and men who made this thing happen from start to finish first ever featured group’s coverage a
