number seven from the elite stable And that doesn’t include like anything that got listed as version one version two [Music] What’s up everybody How you living No puts given Tony and Chris we’re back Had a little bit of a hiatus last week A little travel a little all sorts of things but uh we’re back man We’re back Like the Zer Classic was back last week Like Ben Griffin and Novak getting into the winner circle were back I like the twoman deal It changes up kind of the monotony of the four-hole stroke play If you could add an event Tony to the PGA Tour calendar something other than kind of what we have with Zerg Classic but also not a stroke play thing what would you add real event real money real prizes real FedEx cut points because stable bird could be fun right That’s been done before That could be I I I I truly love match play Mhm Uh but we it is it gets to be a challenge on TV when you’re you know having that final on a Sunday afternoon and it’s like “All right two shots let’s go to commercial or two shots and let’s go over to the consolation round and two shots and let’s just talk about nonsense until we hit two more shots.” So I get it Yeah But I like that idea I like I like Yeah they used to do obviously Stableford is still um you’ll see that uh event but at the international uh when they had that down in Colorado Springs at at Castle Pines which hosted the BMW last year um which was pretty cool I uh I like the thing I like about Zurich is I like how they change it back and forth how it’s best ball one day or fourball and then alternate shot the next It’s like a fall member member It is It’s basically Yeah like a uh like a fall member member Um then you get like you’re you’re on the fourth hole and you forget what you’re actually doing Like what are we playing here Who’s hitting whose turn is it I don’t get it Yeah there was a situation that like I can’t remember which which player it was but I’m surprised this hasn’t happened yet in the event The they said it hasn’t but you know it’s alternate shot Guy misses a shorter putt and like walks up to tap it in right Um you know just out of habit but be a two you know two two-stroke penalty and you get to replay the shot So yeah I could I could do that Um I don’t know that like a Scramble would be something I’d wanna uh I’d want to watch necessarily but as far as formats go um you know yeah it’s tough I mean you got Stroke Play obviously you have the team element If you have the twoerson teams I wouldn’t mind seeing you know a little bit more of that but I’m sure there’s other ideas out there I’m sure people have ideas Did you let us know comments below something like that right there Yeah that’s a great one to comment on Let us know you you got a your preferred format I’m going to help you real quick I’m going to help you people I’m going to help you get your Mother’s Day shopping done early Okay here’s how you’re going to do it Cozy Earth You’re going to get some sheets Better yet get some pajamas And here’s why Put me down The blanket dude The blanket I’m gonna find it real quick Hey I lowkey love the blanket Not only now you get 40% off sitewide So use the code We’ll we’ll put this in the description No putts get you 40% off sitewide Anything you want Even better for this weekend only Do no putts bogo That gets you two for one on the bamboo pajamas I’m telling you you could get your wife You could get a matching Tony you could get a matching set of pajamas and you know I think people would really enjoy that I feel I feel weird saying this out loud Um but um the the bubble cuddle blanket That’s right That sounds I’ll be honest with you No product sounds more like Tony CVY than the bubble cuddle blanket Bubble cudd Yeah It’s a huge hit around here I thought my dog was going to get himself killed cuz he got caught with his his teeth sinking into the blanket Uh shout out to like I’m not you know we don’t we don’t do the apparel testing here Like we get stuff now and again but you know Connor Connor gets more of the pants than we do So I don’t I’m not going to tell you that this is an exhaustive comparison of the market but So they sent I don’t know if you got them They sent me the everywhere pant I did I got I got one pair of the pants I kind of thought like it was going to be like a a lightweight everyday kind of municipal manabout town kind of casual pant and it’s it’s not a fancy pants Um but it’s it turns out to be like it’s kind of a midweight super stretchy little bit of taper but not so much that it like cuts off circulation to your calf And I’m like I just I was I was really surprised it’s going to be just a tremendous pair of golf pants Like I’m like oh my god these are these are really good Um yeah So I wore them last week on the plane They were my plane pants They’re Yeah No they could be airplane pants Again a little more taper than I would want in an airplane pant in the leg I like to keep everything completely loose and free flowing but it worked for me I There was not too much taper for me so I I was able to pull through But yeah I was uh kind of like very again thought I was thought they were something else and then my guy was like “Oh my god these are these are really nice golf pant Cool.” Anyway hey Ben Griffin two things really really cool about his bag The first one we wrote about this on the site the one that maybe isn’t most obvious to a lot of people is Maxfly We have long touted the quality characteristics and performance abilities of the Maxfly golf ball particularly this recent uh recent run the last what two three generations as we’ve tested them etc But he won a PJ tour event with a Maxfly golf ball in the bag How big of a deal is that That’s a good question because fundamentally a Tour win does not change in any way shape or form the quality of that golf ball right It it’s been a good golf ball since the first time we tested it foremost made sure unique to Maxfly/Dicksporting goodsolf Galaxy etc But it’s you know evolution of year-over-year changes aside it’s it’s what it’s always been And I feel like uh certainly for the My Golf Spy audience other other larger golf websites I mean it’s a known com commodity at this point like people understand that it’s a very good golf ball Mhm Presumably there’s some who who maybe aren’t aware and may stumble upon the fact that that Ben Griffin used it but I I wonder if those two audiences are you know it’s hard to detangle them Like if if you don’t know about MaxFly you’re probably not going to realize that that Ben Griffin won with a MaxFly Yeah I would expect Dicks is going to put up some signage in stores and I say you might now you might but but there is there is a contingent right there is a contingent of people who are well-versed in in all things golf gear who still have this mindset that oh well if it’s not used on tour if you don’t win with it on tour it’s not any good So you do have that audience and then you have like the the guys who are buying Kirkland’s for example they don’t care that it’s not used on tour that nobody has won a PGA Tour event with a Kirkland because it’s it represents tremendous value for the golfer and it’s really that simple So that’s not one of their check boxes is tour Yeah tour approved So I mean you can take all right say we’ve got a a reasonably affordable golf ball now tour validated So maybe if you look at the competitive space in that let’s call it $30 to $40 range Um you know I’m I’m I’m hardressed to to name another ball in that space with a PGA Tour victory of any kind So you know they got that going for him I guess I mean step one and step two step one is get into a player’s bag on the PJ tour and then have them step two is win with it So I I I think when you look at the percentage chance of each of those things happening um it has to be incredibly low for a ball that isn’t tied to a major OEM Um and so I think yeah it’s validation for a lot of the things that we’ve known Um it doesn’t at least it doesn’t change the golf ball It was a great ball before Ben Griffin won with it It’s a great ball tomorrow But it makes me wonder if you might see you know his partner obviously Novak had to play it at some point throughout the proceedings uh because of the format Um you know do they pick up another player or two I maybe you know I wouldn’t say that that’s that’s impossible particularly if they had no reason no other reason to try it and it’s like oh okay oh wow that’s well and there is I mean let’s let’s be real here Ben Griffin is not playing a max for free like like the overwhelming majority of stuff on tour right yeah like he is there is there is pay to play here but I do think it does it does potentially open up more of those doors to Maxfly if they decide they want to expend the extend the expand there I go that’s the word the tour staff because now they can say hey yeah this this ball is good enough to win with on tour so there is there is credibility within the uh the narrow sphere of the PGA tour I guess that that may help MaxFly moving forward if that’s the route they want to go down but you know I don’t know to what extent you know big picture Dick’s sporting goods is interested in growing a PGA tour staff beyond one or two guys which is so which is fair Um just other things very quickly on on Ben’s bag Obviously I’m I’m a huge Mazuno iron fan Have been for a long time Uh he has the Pro S3s in there as as his Irons which again what’s what’s cool to me about the Pro S3 are two things One it is effectively the same chassis visually as the JPX Tour So it has that appearance at a dress which again he plays it like four through wedge and has the JPX tour in his three iron Um but this is this is part of and I think you wrote about this on Mazuno kind of part of Mazuno as as they lean into both kind of their modern approach but also kind of maintaining classic irons but with modern technology So this is kind of the S3 is kind of a the first of this newish series that isn’t new but is for Mizuno And I think this is the first one on on PJ Tour for this particular Yeah I’m not I’m not sure what the Mazuno situation with Ben Griffin is He’s still listed on their site as a staffer but he doesn’t kind of have the the headline block right now on the website from you know this week they they gave it to Marco uh for winning He has the wedges in too the T1 wedges So yeah So what’s what’s interesting though like we’ve tal and again not knowing hey maybe something has changed with that contract but the the big talking point from Mizuno we’ve heard for the last couple years right is like if you are a staffer you play our driver them’s the rules I know I know and he’s not he’s playing has a ping so again you know something may have changed with the contract there or he could be uh navigating so to speak so it is interesting so Mizuno irons and wedges Scotty putter ping driver tailor made 3-wood So uh and the the one the other thing I’ll point out too is the shafts Um at least in his driver US Yeah potentially I think Yeah in both the driver and the in the fairway US Link Cube Proto V1 Uh so we don’t see a ton of US these days So uh you know that that’s interesting at least Yeah your Coke and Pepsi tend to be Mitsubishi and Fujakura Fujakura Mitsubishi depending on obviously some Project Decks in the mix TPT gets a little cut here and there but yeah Yeah Novak had uh you know he’s he’s a hazardous guy Um he does the the the smoke green Um you know but he’s primarily stricks on Cleveland and the Irons but also again another ping guy in the Metwood space So um yeah just kind of intriguing nonetheless But this this brings up a question from each a question because we were debating this a little bit This is the tour verse retail question And you know say “Oh well these guys play that I can never get my hands on that.” Well you know if you think you’re playing the same golf ball that the pros are playing you’re out of your mind They get special golf balls with dragon scale you know dimples and they get you know uh you know irons that have been you know baptized by the samurai and things like that What how should we frame that conversation today I mean look there are there are whether it’s eBay or or some of the the other shops there are absolutely uh people who make their living off of promoting the idea of tour issue and it’s somehow better more lethal whatever it is And there there is absolutely some stuff on tour that you can’t get at retail but but by and large it’s it’s not so much the product that’s different I would say it’s it’s the level of service which is sort of you know I guess what you’d call customization inside of tour vans and the like That’s where the big differences are Like we’ve talked about mold costs forever right How much it actually costs just to to make molds for drivers And so you know you don’t want to do that if you don’t have to You don’t want to spend that money So by and large every manufacturer with the bulk of its equipment is is doing everything it possibly can to make sure that what the pros play are what is made available to you Now you know you’re probably not going to get hot melt precisely placed in your driver something like that and you’re not gonna you’re not going to know when you walk into a Golf Galaxy and pull it off the rack That driver was not measured for you So that you know the you know the precise loft you know the precise face angle you know the precise CT That’s the kind of thing where they are they are pulling very specific heads to meet the needs of a given player You might have a guy who who likes a face angle that’s that’s more open as maybe a guy who gets one who prefers it a little more closed And so you take because with any retail part or you know any part there’s a curve right So if you say “Hey my my my stock f face angle is zero,” you’re going to have a range and some guys are going to want those ones that are more open some guys are going to want the ones that are more closed And so it’s it’s about identifying those parts especially kind of with metalwoods Uh I think there’s probably a perception that manufacturers pull all the hot heads for the tour players They measure them and and the fastest ones go to the tour right Reality that’s that’s not the case They don’t want the fastest ones for tour because CT as we’ve talked about can creep over time They get a little hotter with use And the last thing you want if you’re a tour guy is the day of you know you’re kicking off a let’s say you’re about to play in the US Open and the USGA shows up and finds your drivers a little bit hot and now you can’t play it You got to put a brand new one in play You don’t want that No So no It’s just the opposite like you said of like like I I kind of think about this discussion three ways There’s there’s tour issue stuff and it used to be different I’m talking back for sure Back in the day it was day there was a catalog of stuff Today things that are reserved for tour players are one of a couple reasons One like you said it’s a specific specification So it’s a driver head that’s digitally lofted at 9.75 in this particular playing position Awesome But I actually wouldn’t want a tour issue driver head for the reason you just mentioned which is if anything they tend to slow those down a little bit so that they’re comfortably conforming Uh whereas it’s like hey we’ll take our chances at retail I mean let’s be real here It’s going to you know go go go through kind of that that process and it’s like okay the real situation with Tour issue now other than the oneoffs okay you’re not going to get Justin Thomas’ irons Yeah Titus is not going to mass mill retail irons anytime soon No Same thing You see the oneoff you know the Rory Protos and the irons what they did with Tiger before They may replicate those and do a limited run or something like that but the reality is these are spec you know specs and preferences Yeah And a lot of it you say preference right It’s a lot of that stuff the oneoff milling the the Rory protos it is players have played an iron that looks a certain way for you know dozens of years in some cases decades right They this is this is the shape I want to see don’t deviate from that shape And so a lot of the oneoff is all right we’re gonna we’re gonna kind of build modern performance to the extent possible into this player preferred shape specific player preferred shape It’s not a case of you know we made we made really good irons for Rory Uh we couldn’t be bothered to do it for everybody else right No it really is a lot of it is aesthetics and the way it looks and you know top rail thickness being very precise and that the way the the transitions from the toe little little things that aren’t necessarily performance driven at all that are just purely eyeball test right And and the other another I mean we could talk about this one for hours Another angle or another kind of branch on this tree is just because it’s good for a tour player would not necessarily mean that it is good for you So yeah maybe you could get that particular setup if you wanted Um but again just because they’re able to fit and get exactly what Xander Schoffley needs that doesn’t mean I would ever have any success playing his driver setup The one area where I I guess you could argue there are real differences or more differences when you get into the wedge category where first there is a lot of custom grind work that goes on And as we’ve seen over the years like T grind is probably a great example but you could go through you know almost every grind in the Vokei catalog for example that that started out as a oneoff for one guy right Like hey let’s Yeah I’m going to grind this for you And then it it builds up a little momentum and before you know it it’s it goes from one player to to five to 10 to 20 and then it’s like all right might as well bring this to retail think now that we we’ve found some demand or maybe even created some demand in some cases and with those because again I mentioned right it’s it’s more about the service than the performance more than anything else but because they are doing some grinding in the van those those nominal weights tend to start out a little heavier right so um that that’s the big difference there and obviously you can offset that and you know vocal weight your wedges however you want them to but you typically start with a heavier part but otherwise Again it’s not it’s not like oh yeah there’s a there’s a magic steel that gets set aside for tour guys that everybody else gets Yeah I think that’s the that’s the biggest mis miss myth for consumers or kind of misperception is you know just because they can find one example where that is true Like it’s interesting you mentioned like Vokey wedges for one of the first things I thought of when we were talking with uh with JJ at Titalist was a couple of the changes they made with GT were based on these things that they were doing in the tour van right Like how they were doing some of the alignment stuff on the face and what players wanted to see alignment stuff on the face loft in the face and they’re like “What if we put that into our design cycle for the next series and we did some stuff on the face that would alleviate the need for us to do that later on individually for players?” Boom Okay Now you have something in the GT driver that’s technically tourisssued if you will or would have only been available on tour in TSR or or TSI or TS but now is just part of what GT is Again it’s it’s service driven stuff that trickles down Now you know obviously there are exceptions We talked about like the milled irons for Justin Thomas You’re not buying those At least not yet Maybe someday You know titles may decide hey let’s do a limited run just just cuz we can Uh anything for Bryson is going to be you know it’s almost invariably a one of one And dovetailing into that we’re seeing you know it it’s been happening for years but we’re starting we’re starting they’re starting to talk about it more the 3D printed stuff you know and again that applies to to Bryson Max Homer’s Cobra is kind of a oneofone Gary Woodland has some oneofone stuff You know that that’s a case where 3D printing they can do just about anything It’s right additive manufacturing is what they call it which means you don’t you don’t need molds You don’t need all of the traditional there’s not as much overhead Like once you once you have your materials and your printing machines you don’t have to worry about some of the some of the extra parts that can then can cause uh prices to explode really and delays right I mean 3D printing is is a much quicker way to iterate Um yeah there’s a time cost in the printing itself but yeah you can be like “Oh all right Let me let me let me change this one thing We need to thin the top line in this one area Cool 24 hours later you’re done I was going to say yeah the time cost isn’t a ton It’s um you know it’s it’s in that call it 11 12 hours for one process and depending whether we’re talking putters or irons there’s separate processes but then it’s like hey what if we wanted to print six different irons You know they’re working with maximum or whatever and the only thing we want to change is the top line So we want to keep all everything else the same And we’re going to give you five different top lines to select from Great Come in tomorrow You can look at them you know Oh okay I like three and I like two Okay great We’ll take those two and now we’ll play with center of gravity a little bit you know And it’s like and that would take years I mean that would take months to go in between each step And now it can take days It’s it’s kind of you know the 3D printing capabilities are fascinating I kind of think about some of the stuff I saw when I was in Japan several years ago with Mizuno touring you know where where the Euro stuff happens right where it is where you can go in and really customize almost every aspect of your design So you know say “Hey all right I really like the S3 shape but I but I want more offset and I want to you know I want to change the sole grind.” and you kind of pick and choose almost of a out of a configuration menu if you will And so that’s when we talk about 3D printing that’s maybe where it’s headed but that that’s certainly what Cobra can do internally right Like you can sort of change any aspect of the design independently of the others And so you know one of the examples that they gave when when you were out there last week I was listening to the presentation This idea of like all right what if we what if we made this game improvement iron this game improvement shape right It’s a It’s a bigger iron longer heel to toe thicker top line bigger face Mhm But we put like a narrow what you might call tore sole on it You can do that kind of thing Yeah Yeah You start to offset you start to be able to address some things that were kind of opportunity costs before because like you said in general you would think and we talk about this all the time say “Oh yeah it’s a more player preferred shape.” And generally that means you know thinner top line narrower sole less offset more compact shape Okay great Well what if you have somebody like that but they want a wider sole Or what if you take like you said a game improvement club but you want a really thin tip uh you know top line on it or very little offset you know like but you want a really thin tip I kind of view it as as and again it’s all theoretical potential like we know Cobra’s working on it I’m sure others are are trying to do something similar but this idea of of escaping the bucket so to speak right Because that’s what we’ve talked about this with Callaway with their swing code The idea of we’re going to we’re going to categorize swing types and put players into buckets based on what may work best for them And so sure you know you think of in in simple terms iron’s like a game improvement iron right We’ve identified a game improvement player Mhm Who does X Y and Z and and needs ABC because of it And you say well it turns out not every game improvement player needs exactly that recipe Maybe needs two of those ingredients but the third maybe a little more independent player driven than we thought So that idea of like you can kind of really dial that down and and customize to the individual more so than you can today that that’s an appealing prospect Yeah Like what if you could solve for we talk as fitting variables So if you can fit for it and test it then you can maybe find a better answer But like what if you could fit for CG location in irons you know and what if you wanted what if there was a process to go through where it’s like okay I do want it a little bit lower in my seven iron than my six iron Think about very simple example Just take a a a true game improvement iron Let’s just say a midspeed guy right Not excessively fast not excessively slow just kind of middle middle of the bucket if you will for swing speed middle of the middle bucket But he does he hits it all over the face right But whether or not that player is shallow into the ball versus steep into the ball we talk about soul design that that’s a that’s a fundamentally different decision And right now almost invariably when you’re into that game improvement like all right we’re going to give you that big iron that’s going to give you forgiveness when you hit it all over the face We’re going to give you a thick top line but we’re going to give you that wide soul too Cuz we’re just going to assume that that’s what everybody needs or that’s that’s with conventional manufacturing That’s only that’s really the only the design freedom we have because you know molds are expensive and and all of this stuff is expensive And we just we just can’t afford to try and you know fit the Yeah treat treat a steep guy and a shallow guy differently We just have to assume like hey this is going to work pretty well for everybody And sometimes it does sometimes it doesn’t So again just that adding a little more variability flexibility into what you can make Yeah Again solving for that again this idea of what we’re seeing so much and there’s a whole another discussion on this that we’re not going to launch into today which is where does performance and design go from here You know and this this kind of gets us into this Callaway discussion a little bit Um Driver popped up on the USGA conforming list you you noted it and and asked some some good questions around it like Okay here’s another elite driver I think this puts the stable at seven So I got seven I got seven right Is that right There was four at launch Yeah Two more We got the We got the Yeah the the triple diamond max and then the max tour draw and then the TD the TD technically titty And now we have and we’re not even counting the mini If you want to count the mini as a driver it gets us to eight But yeah so number seven from the elite stable and that doesn’t include like anything that got listed is version one version two And so right Um yeah I don’t it’s so we have on the USGA list as of this week the Callaway Elite LP driver Okay USGA photos generally don’t tell us a whole lot Um this one maybe told us even less Yeah Uh is we haven’t like that’s the thing right If if something pops up and it’s called LS right You you kind of know what that means If you see max you know what that means There’s no even LD right LD is that’s typically long drive We’ve got LP I don’t know what LP is Yeah it’s I mean tend to hear LP right relative to records Think of it like when you said it was LP I’m like is this like a music thing So what could LP possibly stand for I got two potential ideas here All right give me two Cuz we we reached out to Callaway and uh fair to say that at the time of broadcast they have not provided additional information which as this is you know maybe it’s coming to retail maybe not Typically if it’s tour only they would have just replied with tour only Don’t worry about it Um but so this may be something So LP what if it stood for limited performance as the this is like the ultimate Callaway Flex where they’re saying you know what uh Elite outperforms everything else on the market to the extent that we actually feel bad about it So we’re offering a low performance model This is the in line with everybody else Limited flight range balls That’s the elite LP Um the other possibility is low profile So maybe this is and again it’s it’s a 10.5 degree head So I think probably not But we talked about whether you want to call them like uh macro drivers or just full size short shafted drivers What if it was like a low profile head Full full 460 but lower profile So maybe you could hit it off the deck I don’t know Probably neither of those things Uh so I’m curious It’s It’s basically like in terms of features the the adjustability it’s very much an elite So same three position there Um yep But that that’s about it I don’t I don’t know I don’t know what we got Presumably right they they made it for a reason Maybe it’s like I said maybe a tour oneoff but at 10 and a half degrees you can’t rule it out completely But um let me ask you this question because you you made mention of this in your article a little bit and and it’s a question people are going to get to is is that too many Is having seven whether it’s six seven eight drivers in in a lineup is that too many Do consumers go you know what I I it’s going to be hard for me to it’s hard enough for me to pick when there’s three or four If there’s seven I I I don’t even know where to go Yes this is funny So going back several years right It used to be everybody had two drivers in their lineup right And one of them was the 299 cheap one that typically performed pretty much as well as the 399 expensive one And I believe Callaway was the first of the major manufacturers to do away with that two-tiered pricing model And I I had a discussion with Harry Arnett who was their SVP of manufacturing at the time and I was like “Hey where’d the cheap one go?” And you know the response maybe a little tongue-in-cheek a little bit in the vein of uh low performance if you will is very much like “Hey no uh Callaway is a premium brand Premium brands don’t make cheap products right?” Something along those lines And so that was like look everything everything we make is now at this elevated price point which was probably $4.99 at the time might have even been 3.99 but it get kind of got rid of the cheap one And so you know that was kind of step one And then step two was like all right we started having we went from two models to three to four right And so I was like dude this is too many Like nobody needs four drivers in their lineup nobody needs three drivers in their lineup And and the push back was like well you know we think maybe having the right model for everybody right is kind of the the best There’s there’s no limit on on the right number of models if you are delivering tailored performance to the individual golfer And and the reason that matters now I think it’s fair to say that we are we are past the era of big gains If anybody launches a driver tomorrow that promises you 10 more yards right you you can be reasonably confident that that’s BS right There are there are incremental gains to be had There are gains to be had as you move farther away from the center of the club face You can move CG around change launch and spin so that so that the one you just made performs differently from the one you made last year But more and more and I think a good example of this is is what Taylor made when we had that when they visit us in the facility to talk about Qi35 and for all the tech in that driver The big story was around fitting right and hey like we need we we want to understand closure rate and fit you based on that and if we can we can do a better job fitting you for a shaft we’ll get you more performance And so what you start to understand is the opportunities now are are not so much through one big thing right It’s it’s again we talk about these little levers that that get pulled and and sometimes it’s just a head with a completely different base performance spec if you will right You’re just instead of if you think of every head in your lineup as a bucket like the more buckets you have the more diversified performance the better your opportunity to fit any given individual So I think you know that’s the direction we’re heading in where and again maybe maybe not everything is available at Golf Galaxy right because that guy if he’s not getting fit sometimes it’s just a a matter of opportunity there’s no good place near me to get fit that that sometimes happens but also it’s it’s a balance of there is an element of of convenience right I I want the best performing driver that I can get without having to go through the inconvenience of being fitted for it And so and that’s I mean that’s still a lot of drivers right Off the rack Yes And so the off the rack guy may not care about that that next level of performance detail but somebody does Mhm Yeah I think about it similar to So you know talk about like Cobra DS adapt this year Again the big story wasn’t hey it’s the next generation of Dark Speed It was future fit 33 It was this massively adjustable hazy that had like you know basically took the myfly 8 which was before and then on each of those settings of loaded up with crack Yeah There were eight settings each with whatever eight different you know options under each one of those primary settings which gave you you know 60 some odd uh you know different options and 33 unique settings within there So again the the message was very very clear We think we can unlock more performance for you year-over-year by dialing in dialing you into the exact loft lie etc setting that you need as opposed to here’s our incremental gains year-over-year We got another four grams out of the crown We shifted the CG ever you know the draw one ever more so slightly toward the heel or we boosted MOI by 37 points by putting a slightly heavier weight in the back or again whatever those incremental gains are And it it seems like overkill but if you think about it in the context of again right this idea of buckets different heads for different golfers and things like that One of the things that you know when we were out the first time in December to when we saw Future Fit 33 for the first time was you know what what the Cobra engineers told us at the time is what they’re finding is that average to below average kind of your weekend hacker guys that that want to get fitted but maybe aren’t the the best most consistent drivers of the golf ball They tend to fit in those settings that are kind of the if you look at Cobra’s diagrams right You got more extreme They’re the like the outer rings Yeah They like kind of Yeah Think of it as Saturn right Like the the average to below average golfer is going to fit into a setting that’s that’s way out on the the perimeter of those rings the outer ring Whereas the better golfers those guys tend to to be fit into somewhere in those inner rings if you will And so you can think about that as as almost functionally like two different heads Mhm And so like hey if if Cobra couldn’t do that with a single Huzzle the approach may have been like all right we have our better player Hzlele that covers these interior positions right We want to narrow in on that guy and we have this other Huzzle that’s that’s for the wider positions for the average golfer That’s that’s a lot of of what their brands are trying to do with these multiple heads And maybe the definition isn’t average bel or above average but it’s you know this this type of golfer who has these characteristics right We want to we want to drill down into those specs as as well as we possibly can Yeah And that I think that’s the biggest challenge is is the you know good examples like future fit 33 the number of bounce loft grinds in the vokei collection etc Ultimately these are really for the fitters not for the golfers Like to me it’s more like hey if I go to you know mechanic to have my car fix I want them to have as many tools as possible I’m not paying attention how many tools they have The more they have great If they’re like “Hey we have seven different driver heads that we can fit you into.” Awesome That’s fantastic I don’t necessarily need to know if I’m a consumer I don’t necessarily need to know the exact differences between each one of those heads if I’m working with the right fitter that can tell me you know get me into the right get me into the right one because the fact that you know Callaway comes out with a uh you know tour draw head that’s great That’s not titty I don’t I I care but I don’t look and go “Oh my gosh here comes another Well it’s not for me.” So So what The temptation is always there Like you’re always like “Oh maybe it is for me.” Like tour doesn’t mean I don’t want to try It doesn’t mean I’m not going to put it through the paces But so in that respect right if you are kind of like you know a DIY gear nerd it does complicate things where like used to be like “All right all right Which of these which of these three drivers is right for me versus like which of these seven or or maybe it’s a mini driver it’s eight or maybe I need some to issue thing that may or may not be different but what the hell I know it has an open face angle so let me try one of those right it’s and I have to think there’s a part of each OEM that that knows that to a degree like it’s why they don’t necessarily all come out at the same time and yes I know we’re told hey it wasn’t quite ready or this or that and sometimes that’s more true sometimes it’s less through but keeping things fresh throughout the year staggering releases keeps people excited keeps the name relevant You can’t win as an OEM sometimes with the consumers because they’ll say “Hey well you haven’t come out with anything new and then you come out with something new and they’re like coming out with new stuff all the time.” You know it’s like well you can’t have it both ways So the the OEMs are are in a tough spot in in that regard but I like it I actually like Callie having a seventh head an eighth head a 10th head That’s I just want to know what is what is the LP I want to know what it is too I want to know what Last topic very quickly Two minutes on this one Barbara wrote an article last week This was uh the Zalloy which is the new metal that uh to me what’s interesting primarily about this article Um so we’re we’re talking specifically about Cleveland wedges which many people know Cleveland wedges have It’s it’s a industry hallmark has been for a long time They developed a brand new material material that did not ever exist before it’s an alloy that they’re not going to tell us exactly what it is how it the the construction and percentages of the of the different metals but theoretically right the idea is that this again offsets the opportunity cost between things like feeling softer lasting longer and generating uh more spin My question for you Tony is would those things be enough to get you out of your vocs You know I’d have to I’d have to like I feel like I get enough spin out of my vocs I’m I’m perfectly I’m not unhappy with the feel Like I would I would not change for feel but to put myself in the in the position of of the average golfer I think the thing that is appealing is the durability aspect of it Yeah And it it’s tricky because we know right We’ll we’ll tell you that your wedges particularly your higher lofted ones your lob wedge your sand wedge those should be with I would I would go so far as to say without exception for for pretty much every golfer those should be the two most frequently replaced clubs in your bag Mhm And you will see guys who buy a new driver every year and they’re still playing like copper ping wedges from you know before even anybody knew there was a groove rule kind of thing And so so that’s the challenge for me knowing like golfers should replace their wedges more than they do If if you can add longevity to that knowing that well hey we’re we’re going to give you something that that makes it less necessary to do the thing you weren’t going to do anyway Yep That that’s a good thing So yeah the the the durability piece of it is interesting to me And I think if if you are a golfer who not only understands that you should you replace your wedges often you know Voki’s number is 75 rounds and again that’s plus or minus actual wear and tear and how often you practice with them the conditions you play and a lot of variables but you got to you know some of that you got to figure out on your own and kind of see how your launch and spin changes But if if I’m a golfer who is committed to to making sure that my wedges perform at their optimal level always then then yeah the durability piece is is certainly reason enough to consider Shrix Now yep you know there are some shortcomings Uh kind of a in the wedge space it it seems almost funny to to say it but Cleveland has become more of a challenger brand in that space And with that right it’s it’s part and parcel of that market categorization The loft and grind options are not as extensive And so that’s the thing where you’re like hey I I really need this type of grind And to its credit right I’m looking hey look there is there is a something that looks a hell of a lot right They’ve got their take on TE finally Uh so you know there is a fitting element right Like I I don’t care about the durability I don’t care about the spin and all this other stuff If it if it just doesn’t fit me in terms of the turf interaction on my home course and how I deliver the club to the ball then then I don’t care Sure But if you’ve got something that fits me and you can give me enhanced durability for a club that is inherently less durable than anything else in my bag sort of a golf ball and I’m going to lose that anyway Uh so who cares then Yeah Lasting four holes plus or minus regardless Exactly So yeah this is whatever it is is definitely a step in the right direction I think it’s a a good story and again it’s not a sexy story but this is we’ve talked about this It’s the future is materials and processes right Like there’s 3D printing like that’s a process That’s all it is right You’re still using basically the same materials You’re not radically reshaping a golf club You can do more with it but fundamentally it’s just a manufacturing story This is a material materials It’s processes and then it’s the way that you can get to kind of that more onetoone solution Figuring out what do I need exactly for me that’s different than the the person next to me even if we’re very similar Is that through fitting through settings through design you know all that kind of stuff So yeah it’s a lot man It’s a lot That’s plenty of stuff questions comments what LP stands for different tour uh tournament formats tour issue verse retail Is there any difference What’s going on Is it too many drivers Is seven too many Do you want more Do you want 10 Do you want 12 Are you good with two Let us know Let us know This is going to get to the point where somebody’s going to release more drivers than I play rounds in a year Like I can’t even try them all because I don’t play 13 drivers and 12 rounds Yeah What are we going to do Well until next week We out Well until next

  1. You had me at Max Fly I had to try them after you review them last year and man never been happier with a ball. I hit the tour x in yellow. Yellow because I'm not that old but I do need to help see the ball in the air.

  2. When notah begaye iii played at my home course in Farmington NM he signed his golf ball for me and it was a max fli…

  3. About the match play Sunday issue. Just have the top 20 still Play for finishing positions. Have a bonus prize for lowest round on that final day for the other 18 so it keeps it a little interesting and make them play the full 18.

  4. I think the big thing as you mentioned for Maxfli is "what's the next domino to fall?" Can they sign another winner? Can they get a major? Do they get more aggressive? Can't wait to see what happens as a Golf Galaxy employee.

  5. Also, we know for a fact that Callaway makes different core formulations for their pros for their balls. Titleist also has their dash, dot and plus system that is slowly making its way to retail. My store got a bunch of these in ProV1 X-Out boxes 10 years ago.

  6. Well, make it a mixed team event with the LPGA. (you may have to schedule change the event). People would watch, just out of curiosity.

  7. LP – I was thinking light performance or light players , like the GT1 series a light weight driver for slow swing speeds to swing faster

  8. Slowly raising my hand when you're describing not knowing about Maxfli, granted I've not even played for 3 years yet. But yeah, I now feel seen lol.

  9. It’s fun you have the conversation about your equipment after talking about the Maxfli ball. Part of me though “probs playing a pro V that maxfli had its name stamped on”

  10. Ben Griffin looks like a total Dork. But it shows, you can have a less than beautiful golf swing, and play well.

  11. It’s interesting that you guys are talking about testing individual aspects of iron design and testing them individually and that’s exactly what the guys at @ForewardGolf are doing. Just thought it was worth a mention 👍🏼

  12. With a big number of Elyte drivers could be great for Callaway – a lazy fitter doesn't have to move from one brand. Start with standard model and then go left/right/up/down in the model range to fit.

  13. Tony talks about how he needs a grind that fits his delivery on his home course. Trouble for me is my home course conditions change multiple times during a season. I need something that’s playable in all conditions, so the Clevelands work great for me. Full face 2s are great.

  14. Matchplay doesn’t have to be an ad fest, make sponsorship expensive, have every hole sponsored and across the bottom of the screen play sponsor names from the event. TV companies havent re thought marketing.

  15. I just bought 4 dozen of the Tour S. It's slightly firmer than the previous generation and only a couple of compression points softer than a ProV1. The covers on Maxfli balls are top notch. I forgot balls at home so I bought a sleeve of new TP5s. While they performed well, the cover didn't hold up at all.

  16. I’ve played Maxfli tour x balls for several years I don’t want them paying pros to play them and raising the price to us customers

  17. 7 is way too many! Making so many different versions of a driver as well as bringing out a new driver every year is why the prices are going so high. They have R&D costs as well as the mold/set up costs, production costs and it goes on and it all adds up to making new drivers more and more expensive. Will it be 3 years or 5 years when we hit $1,000 for a stock driver?

  18. Let's go for a Nassau, front back total, then, after you narrow it down, you have the top 8 and a 3 hole playoff. All 8 on the tee at once, that way for Sunday viewers, you at least have 16 players on the course.

  19. I just picked up a box of Maxfli Tour. If it's as good as they say, I'll be happy to pay $40. I normally play the TP5.
