Scottie Scheffler explains whether PGA Tour courses are too easy or not…#golf #scottiescheffler
last year 22 under par got you into a playoff I mean 22 under par didn’t even win Is this course given it’s the last signature event on the PGA Tour for the season Is this course too easy You know golf golf’s funny in that sense I think people people when they watch golf it’s not like other sports where you want us to look like y’all when we play golf I think it’s just kind of one of those funny things It’s like you watch the NBA and you’re like man I wish that I wish they couldn’t dunk you know I wish they could I wish they were scoring less I wish their shooting percentage was lower on three-pointers And like if you watch tennis you’re like “Man I wish I wish the ball was going slower so they so they look like you know me out there playing tennis.” It’s it’s not like that You know as much as some people want us to feel like them you know professional golf is different than amateur golf You know we get a lot of time to prepare to go out and play And the guys out here are really good at golf Like if you stand there on the driving range and you watch a range session that ball doesn’t go offline very often And I think sometimes especially in this day and age people get way too caught up in the winning score um being what is a proper test I think a proper test is good shots being rewarded and bad shots being punished I think this is one of the best golf courses for that Um there’s opportunity out there and there’s also punishment Like you look at the the closing stretch 15 If you hit a good shot you got a birdie opportunity If you try and bail out right you’re going to be a bunker short right at the green You’re going to have a 40 yard bunker shot It’s a hard shot 16 If you hit a good shot you’re going to have a good look at birdie If you bail out and go long it’s a tough tough chip down the hill 17 If you hit the fairway you’re gonna have a chance to hit in there close to the pin If you hit in the left rough you probably can’t get to the green I mean that’s what we look for in golf courses in terms of you want good shots to be rewarded and bad shots to be punished It’s it’s as simple as that And the winning score I think people get way too caught up in And that’s I’m not saying necessarily that even par is a bad winning score Like some weeks like the US Open you hit two great shots and you’re going to get rewarded with a par And that’s fine I think that’s good too I think across the board the way we get tested in professional golf is is very good I think we play different types of golf courses We play different types of grass We play different types of winning scores Um we just see different tests and I think not one is better than the other But the the most frustrating thing for me when I play a golf tournament is when you see good shots not getting rewarded and bad shots not being punished properly That’s really all we look for And so do I care that 22 under wins this week No Like I played good last year and um if they somehow change it to 12 under by making the pins in silly spots and doing stuff to trick up the golf course what we want is a fair test and I think having birdies at the end sometimes is a pretty exciting finish I mean it’s really all there is to it
Are PGA Tour courses too easy? Scottie Scheffler explains what a “fair test” looks like in the eyes of Tour players and why he thinks it’s weird golf is looked at differently than other pro sports.

Scottie guilt tripping everyone who likes to see the struggle. Like we’re supposed to feel bad 😅😂 Thing is, golf doesn’t compare to these sports, not even tennis. The analogy sounds good but isn’t real. A good course is one that tests the 6 inches between the ears. Of course the majority of fans care if scores are 30 under and one guy runs away with it. How’s that watchable?
You’re in the entertainment industry after all. Prize money comes from sponsors. Sponsors pay because people watch. Producing a product the people will watch is more important than #1’s feeling coming off Oakmont. Not all your good shots are rewarded, and not all your bad shots are punished. There’s luck involved. You’ll be fine Scottie.
At the end of the day regardless of how difficult or easy a course is, someone has to be at their best to win that day, and that's the true test. Who cares what the score is…
Scottie being a dick as usual thinking he knows what everyone thinks. He should stick to using cars as weapons
The original tenant of golf is that “par is the measure of a great round “ this is why fans don’t like 24 under winning each week – it’s no fun to some of us, watching target golf week in week out with no real struggles
Perfect answer
Well, some people do watch the women's version of those sports and then all those things you said come true.
As a fan, I do like the tougher tests. That US Open. was awesome. I hate when majors (looking at you, The Open) play to really low scores. That said, one of the best things about golf is that the "playing field" changes from week to week and even from round to round. The low scoring tourneys are fun, too.
Personally speaking, I love watching numbers being put up on the board. I also can watch them shoot -1 to win. I could never shoot -22 on a public course, it's impressive to watch them score in different variations.
I don’t think the general population wants pros to look like them. Maybe the losers who host Golf Channel, but that’s about it
He should have just said…YES🤦🏽♂️
I wish Rory would watch this and learn how to answer questions
The difference between golf and other sports is that mistakes happen all the time and there are other factors that can lead to mistakes. The NBA isn't a 3 point shooting contest, tennis isn't one guy hitting against a wall, etc. Golf is just one guy against the course. And if the course is easy it's just boring. The equivalent to what the PGA is now is like if the NBA had a 5 foot wide rim
we wanna so pros go low!
Give them all a set of clubs from the 80’s and see how they get on.
cool
What an answer
Par should be difficult, roll the ball back to 1970 standards and let’s see how they do Then ?
Any Player who shoot 6, 12, 18,22 underpar is too easy. Most courses they are not tested, most of all they get the long bombs for Scoring is no problem with you guys playing
The US Open (Oakmount) should be the prototype for all PGA Players playing tournaments, and the score at the US Open is are reality score, knock off ALL LONG BALL HITTERS, even Scottie couldn't handle it.
That's why Tiger Woods kicked everyone's ass, he played Course Management,
Scottie, your course does NOT TEST YOU, and the score proves it. Course Management backed off players like Scottie and many others.
More Bunkers for Long ball hitters, higher grass setting if you miss fairways, narrower Fairways, more Dog Legs, and smaller Greens to land on.
Oakmount is the test for all Tournaments to keep their scores as we saw, and fewer ball finders need to find their own balls, not spectators.
Oakmont was basically unwatchable the course itself is just shit where’s the fun in watching players miss a fairway by 5 yards and not be able to hit their ball
Using his analogy, the equivalent of the ball going slow in tennis is having an easy course. A difficult course where golfers are struggling is the equivalent of a competitive, fast-paced game in basketball or whatever. It’s not entertaining to see golfers go out and shoot -15 on easy ass courses
The golf community has a weird obsession with punishment. Whether it’s people who want to watch pros make double bogeys or the guys drive to their local club and hate themselves for 4 hours.
I struggle at something therefore I want to see others struggle is a really strange mentality for something that should be fun.
Sir..
Brilliant answer
So the record books be damned because you have a better ball and advanced equipment? Does St Andrews have the space for more tee boxes or are we fine with -30 in the next Open there.
Well said sir i commend you ,
Do you notice the difference between the way he answers questions and the way Judas (aka Phil Mickelson) does? lol
SAY THAT
Could not agree more.
The fact is the pros simply score more, and the average fan can’t cope with that reality
Id like to see the pros go to my local muni and hit off the rough/dirt patches frankly. Theyd probably hit 50 under par but sometimes theyd hit the dead grass in the middle of the green
Most I’ve heard him say.
Absolutely perfect answer. The course isn’t easy, those guys are just that fucking good
I don’t get people saying Scottie is boring. He is a top tier golfer and gives some of the best in depth answers when it comes to media.
I love this course. It's a great test of golf!!!!
They make it sound like it's not a stroke play tourney against other professionals. They play championship level courses and make it look easy and, on top of that, they have to shoot lower than the rest of the field and 1 guy out of all of them is going to win. I guarantee, Timmy the weekend warrior concedes before the turn against the worst ranked pro at the local cow patch.
