It’s not unheard for golfers to combine groups on a slow day at your local club or municipal track.

But on the PGA Tour? That’s a different story.

A fifth mid-tournament withdrawal at the 2025 Travelers Championship forced a shakeup in the groupings in the middle of Sunday’s final round at TPC River Highlands, where players went off both Nos. 1 and 10 tees in groups of three after early morning storms caused a delayed start.

But due to an uneven number of players, there were two pairings, one of those being the twosome of Matti Schmid and Thomas Detry, who went off No. 10.

After four holes, Schmid withdrew with an illness, leaving Detry by himself, but up ahead was the other twosome, Nick Dunlap and Davis Riley, who were still waiting to tee off on No. 16 in front of Detry, who was finishing up on No. 15.

Detry joined Dunlap and Riley to play the rest of the final round at TPC River Highlands in what can only be described as a highly unusual combining of groups.

Schmid is the fifth player to withdraw from this year’s Travelers after the event had already started, and the fourth to do so in the middle of a round.

Jordan Spieth withdrew during Thursday’s first round with a neck injury — the first WD of his entire career. Si Woo Kim followed suit Friday, calling it quits due to a back injury after starting the second round 7 over through 12 holes.
