how well do you know the game of golf cuz I’ve been playing all my life and some of the rules we’re talking about today I’ve never heard of we’re going to walk through the 10 rules that are most commonly misunderstood by golfers and to get things started we’ve got a rule that’ll help you stop your triple bogeies imagine we’re in this situation here we’ve got a small 6ft putt going downhill on some fast greens and here at Men Golf Club this is a real test of fast greens in London but we have this putt and the situation is we’re quite nervous and as I square up and as I line up I’m going to take a hit of this putt and I just absolutely wrap it past the hole it can happen we get nervous out on the golf course when the adrenaline’s coming through these sorts of things happen and as I come to my lie I can see it’s we’re in a sort of a divot or the edge of the green it’s a really short chip and I know that my chipping is absolutely terrible bring in rule 14.6 stroke and distance at any point on the course wherever I am unless it’s out of bounds I can take a one-shot penalty and take the ball back to where I played it before so I’m going to pick up my ball i’m going to walk back to where I saw my original ball marking and then I can have another go at the putt and this time I have a much better feel for the speed it’s always the second ball that goes down isn’t it the great thing about this rule is that it can be done anywhere on the course bunkers T- box fairway rough wherever you want to do it if you want to take a shot again stroke a distance lets you take a one-shot penalty and retake the shot that’s the first rule crossed off next we’ve got loose impediment rule our next rule brings us to the bunker now this rule happens a lot out on the golf course and in bunkers especially in rural areas when you come into the bunker and you have a look at your ball you might have a good lie but sometimes there’s a few loose impediments a few rocks a few leaves maybe the other stuff that’s sort of hanging around your ball and it’s going to get in the way of your stroke might not do it physically but it can mess with your stroke mentally bring in rule 15 the loose impediment rule where I’m allowed without touching the ball without grounding my club I’m allowed to move these impediments out the way so I can then take a free stroke at the ball [Music] do you know what i’ll take that there’s a putt there somewhere another rule crossed off and up next we’ve got the double hit rule now this next rule happens extremely rarely but it does happen especially among the high handicappers i’m going to do it now and see if you can guess what it is you hit the ball twice on your swing now usually this was a case where if you hit the ball twice that counts as two strokes but now rule 10.1 says that if you accidentally hit the ball twice it is no longer a penalty stroke for hitting your ball so if you end up making contact with the ball on the follow through of your swing or on any part of the swing for your second time it’s only one stroke and there is no more penalty occurred another rule ticked off and up next we’ve got a rule that will stop you getting into danger our next rule I’ve seen happen so many times on the golf course it happens when we’re just playing by oursel or if we’re just trying to pick up the pace of play we’re rushing with pressure from behind and we get a bit of ahead ourselves in taking our shot too quickly we take a line up at the chip just playing a little bump and run and I’ve absolutely nailed my bag that’s standing next to the green so what happens now originally if you hit the bag if you hit a person animal other objects on the course was a one-shot penalty no longer i can now go up to my bag and carefully move it out of place so I don’t hit the ball and then we can have another go at the shot blasted it through the green instead but to summarize if you end up hitting an object on the ball bag person animal then it’s no longer a penalty stroke and you can just play it as it lies with that rule done we move on to rules about the pin on the green this next rule has definitely helped out my game and has certainly taken strokes off of my rounds and it’s all about having the flag in the hole we’re back at the sort of 7 to 8 foot putt length and it used to be that if I puted this and the ball hit the flag while it was still in the hole I take a penalty for that but now the flag can’t be left in the hole which is great for so many reasons which is what I’m going to explain to you the rule is 13.2A flag can be left in the hole but the first sort of benefit for this rule is that especially for this putt here we’re playing a modern golf club lightning fast greens a great test of your putting if you’re in southwest London and this part I’m facing here it’s downhill right to left it’s sloping so many times when we play golf we overcook these shots or if we hit it too hard at the hole it lips out it bounces out but with the flag still being in the hole if I accidentally hit this thing just a little too hard perfect example there instead of jumping out the hole jumping out the back of the hole lipping out it’s hit the flag and it’s died just straight into the hole and I don’t have to take a shot penalty for it the second glaring benefit is on longer putts like this here i want to say I’m about 40 feet away but I can see clearly where the pin is where the hole is and it’s very easy for me to gauge how hard I need to hit the putts but compare this to when the flag is not in the hole just how much more difficult is that and I think if you’re playing on your own that’s becomes a real issue if you’re lucky enough to have a caddy or if you’re playing with people they used to have to tend it for you but now you can just leave the thing in there but I’m going to have a go at this part without the flag in cuz I just want to see how it goes can you imagine if I hold this keep trickling but you see my point i’ve probably ended up a good few feet i mean if the flag was in probably wouldn’t hold it but you see what I mean with that rule done our next one will save you trouble with your playing partner i’ve seen this happen so many times on the golf course this situation here my playing partner’s probably got a little bit lazy hasn’t marked the ball i’ve said it’s a left to right reading green it doesn’t matter i’m good enough i’m going to miss the ball and learn the holes and I step up and I take the chip what happens i’ve hit his ball i’ve moved his further away from the hole and my ball is ultimately a little bit better cuz I did thin it but what is the rule here so if my playing partner’s ball is on the green and I’m off the green and I hit it there is no penalty but if we take the same situation again I’m on the green my playing partner’s on the green he hasn’t got a marker i said “Don’t worry I’ve got this putt anyway i’m not going to hit your ball.” And then I end up taking my stroke and hitting the ball and my ball is just clattered into his ball because both of our balls were on the green before any stroke was made then I have to take a twoshot penalty our next rule will help you out in the rarest of occasions on the golf course i heard a story once where one of my friends was playing he’s playing out the trees he’s tried to hit it up the ball’s gone way up into the trees rebounded and it’s come down and the ball has rested here just next to my mic and this is where the ball has rest so I’ve always wondered what is the ruling behind this and I think we see this on the PJ tour a lot where the ball gets hit into the crowds it ends up in people’s drinks in people’s pockets in people’s jackets it’s a rare thing to happen when we’re playing by ourselves and when we’re with our friends in social golf but on the PJ tour it happens a surprising amount so what is the rule so rule 17 says if a ball has landed in someone’s clothing there’s no penalty and it’s just a free drop from where they are there’s no moving closer to the green there’s no moving out onto the fairway where the ball landed in their clothing a drop must go down there’s no penalty and it’s a free shot from there with that rule done up next we’re going to be talking about phones on the golf course another rule that there’s a lot of uncertainty about is with these using your phones on the golf course now I use my phone loads my friends use the phone loads so what are the rules with what you can and what you can’t do when it comes to using phones in social golf and in competition distance measuring devices GPS apps fine you can go on here you can measure how far is to the pin what the carry is where the fairway bunkers are whatever you want to measure you’re allowed to do that on your phone but as soon as you come off that app and you go onto your weather app to check wind direction wind speed whatever it is about the weather that can result in your disqualification so with this shot here I can go onto my phone and I can check how far it is to the pin it’s about 60 yards the bunkers are a bit further on the water’s a bit shorter but what I can’t do is go on to my weather app and check which way the wind is coming from luckily for us there’s a much easier and faster way of doing that and that’s just thrown up a bit of grass wind’s coming that way i’ve got about 60 yards watch this that’s pin high after that one I’ll walk you through what to do when landed in a messy situation i go on about this a lot on the channel but I love coming to Molden Golf Club in Southwest London i think it’s one of the best tests you’re going to get in sort of a city golf course atmosphere partly because of these these very deep lipped fairway bunkers they’re in really annoying places off the tea but what happens quite a lot when I play here is this situation where my ball has come bounding along the middle of the fairway obviously and it’s come to rest just on the lip of the fairway bunker i can sort of get a shot if I want to if I go like this and I sort of play as a cricket shot but if it’s any closer there’s just no way I can have a go nearly there’s just no way I can have a go at the hole without making a bit of a fool myself or bringing that water into play so what rule 19 allows you to do is declare it unplayable from anywhere on the course it doesn’t have to be stopped behind trees doesn’t have to be in any specific place it can be anywhere that you deem is unplayable even if you think playing from the fairway the best lie is unplayable you can take an unplayable from there so the process is simple mark your ball pick it up no closer to the hole one club length from knee height perfect i now have a shot into the green which I can play and finally here’s what to do when your ball is a little bit too close to out of bounds it doesn’t happen often for us but sometimes we find ourselves really on the line between the out of bounds and the inplay at the moment according to the red set line that are just behind the cameras here I’m stepping out of bounds but my ball is still in bounds i don’t have to take the penalty there but I think what’s a common misconception with players is that just because I’m standing out of bounds playing the ball doesn’t mean that my ball itself is out of bounds so what you are allowed to do if it is your preferred option is if I take my stance here I can see that my body is out of bounds but the ball is in play if that’s a bets option then it doesn’t matter and I can still play my ball with no penalty and I can get myself back into play but if I adjust this now to where I definitely am out of bounds and out of play the way I drop it has changed it’s no longer from the shoulder as we used to do it is now as you’ve probably seen on TV just bend over drop it from the knee and play from there and that’s all our rules let us know which one was your favorite and we hope this helps you when you’re heading out this weekend

  1. Two club lengths for an unplayable lie, or back on a line with the pin, or stroke & distance. Dodgy drop! 🤠
