I got a new launch monitor that shows club data. It’s been amazing to learn more about my swing. On some of my shots I see this after impact. My club hits the ball and then opens up on the follow through. Almost like it’s bouncing off the ball and I’m not following through properly by turning the club over. Anyone know what’s going on? On a lot of these the shot is still pretty good, so I’m not sure if it’s a problem.

You’re hitting it on the toe. The club is deflecting because you’re hitting the off center. You’re also in to out so the toe strike makes it go straight. If you hit it out of the center it would go right

  2. It’s nothing to do with not gripping the club tightly enough. You’re hitting the ball off the toe. That causes the club to twist because you’re not hitting it from the sweet spot. A lot of progress in club developing more forgiving clubs has been focused on attempting to minimise that twisting on off-centre strikes, but it still happens. Find a shot where you hit it off the middle, and that twisting won’t happen

  3. Brother don’t listen to any of these comments about grip. We can’t see your grip – all we can see is that you’re delivering the clubface way in front of the shaft. There is no compression in those frames. It’s the weakest position the clubface can be at impact. Best case scenario you are scooping clean off the surface, worst case is chunking it an inch behind the ball.

Continue to practice and don’t hit off of the toe.

Can buy fancy launch monitor… but not lessons to ask a knowledgeable person what’s happening. This is golf

Hit down on the ball and release your wrists like you are trying to trap and drive the ball

What kind of launch monitor is this?

  8. 1. You’re hitting it on the upswing, not good for irons.

    2. You’re hitting it on the toe

    3. Grip is probably too weak

It is a combination of torque and basic physics. Torque is the twisting motion golf shafts have. Some shafts have more than others. So when hitting a shot the clubhead will twist. As you hit the toe this causes the clubhead to rotate counter clockwise due to Newton’s first law.

Molecular physicist here. You hit it off the toe with and out to in swing so hitting the ball like that made the club move like that. Really complicated so wouldn’t expect you to get it but trust me. If you had a more technical swing analysis, visual cues, and maybe a degree in golf ball contact it would probably be easier to tell. I would recommend a new launch monitor and new clubs

Yes it’s the off center strike, but its actually the shaft that is torqued. If you had cameras on your hands you would see that they are not moving. I have filmed this on my trackman before.

Who cares. The ball is already gone.

    Fix the swing path

What i see is the club is twisting dramatically open after impact.

I think you should examine your grip. With a proper grip on the club you should not see that much deflection. Look into reading Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons for a good explanation of a proper golf grip.

The other thing i can see from the shaft angle is that your hands are far behind the ball at impact, indicating your are flipping and staying behind the ball. Rather that keeping your hands ahead of the clubhead and driving your center of mass forward in front of the ball before impact.

Went to my first lesson today and we addressed this. What helped me understand it was knowing how to tighten my grip. At first I was just squeezing more and it kinda worked but the aha moment for me is when he said to also twist your hands together too. Left hand should be squeezing towards the right hand and vice versa. He said no air bubble in between. Double check your grip too. For some reason my ring finger on my right hand was over my pointer finger on my left hand. It was barely on there but I had more control as soon as I moved it down to the club.

Aside from fatting it, being over the top, having no shaft lean and casting, and hitting it off the toe? Not a thing wrong with your swing! Swing your swing!
