further Ado sit back enjoy this really interesting conversation podcast around football and golf with Mr Harry Kane well Harry thank you honestly thanks for joining us today no worri cuz I know you’re incredibly busy in fact you’re that busy you were literally on a football pitch yesterday yeah and you’ve managed to get all the way here to come and do fantastic podcast with us and to film a cool video yeah how how do you manage it how do you manage your time um yeah I mean I mean I love golf so I try and make as much time for golf but yeah it was uh obviously we played uh Finland last night good result and then we got back I think I got here about 3:00 a.m. in uh or early hours this morning and uh and then yeah I’m back to Munich this uh this evening so um no it’s been good I I kind I kind of just try and find a bit of time for golf because it’s a good switch off for me you panicked us last week you did you you you had yeah you had really panicked us because obviously been really working on this and getting it going and then it was like Harry might have a little injury and we’re like no yeah yeah I had a little uh a little it’s a strange one actually I was playing with in Frankfurt last last week and uh just show like a little twing in my in my growing so then it would come off but then I had to scan went to like we I flew back to England anyway had to scan and uh and yeah it was just like a little I think a little nerve thing so I missed the first game unfortunately but then uh I managed to play the second one and the guys were saying oh you need to let us know as soon as possible we got a load of stuff planned and uh yeah I was like I’m going to do it unless something happens in the game against Finland uh I was 100% doing it that’s I think today’s video I think Rick said to you before off camera is going to be exciting one because you’re going to work as a team so we we’ve heard we’ve seen obviously bits about your golf before you are I believe a good golfer I’m a I’m a decent golfer it’s kind of uh I think I’m 3.9 or 3.7 on my England at the moment but I’ve not been able to obviously being in Munich I haven’t been able to put no scorecards in for for a while and I haven’t played a load of Amy since I’ve been out there but uh I’m I’m a decent golfer I feel like the last couple years I’ve kind of not been as good but I can hold hold my own I think the clips I’ve seen I’ve not seen you in real life yet the CS I’ve seen you seemed incredible at driving the ball that seems to be your power yeah do you know what so like I used my golf game used to be all power I used to just like kind of smash the ball really far um kind of beat up goal courses in that sense so like I’m hitting wedges into into holes and then kind of a couple years ago well about yeah about a year and a bit ago uh I went for a bit of a swing change I started working with someone and I thought you know I want to really get consistent because I had a bit of like a risty swing where I was hitting it far but sometimes it was just kind of all over the place um and then since then I’m and then I couldn’t continue it cuz I went to Munich so now I’m kind of in this place where I’m like half and a half and it’s it’s not a good place to be if I’m honest and have you uh you not managed to play loads of golf in Munich no I played I played a bit there’s a few coures like near me um but just with the the schedules and I think just moving to Munich like with the kids and uh my wife getting everyone settled and uh yeah I just when I when I was here when I was at Spurs I was kind of you know after training I’d popped down here or I was just more settled at the moment I’m still just sorting stuff out so I just don’t don’t seem to have as much time I suppose yeah you’re moving your whole family and after train you go right I’m going playing golf now I’ve seen five hours i’ seen a bit it must be tough because it’s such a big transition obviously moving out to Munich and kind of moving the family golf has had to take a bit of a backseat it has it has it it was uh it was a lot like obviously it was my first move in in my career so I don’t really know what to expect and I was surprised by kind of just how much uh goes into it it made me appreciate because I was at Spurs and obviously everything was closed I was at home you know the guys coming in I didn’t fully appreciate what they was going through some of the guys from abroad and so it kind of opened my eyes to that and I was kind of on my own there in Munich for about five the first five months cuz my kids were finishing school in London uh like the term in school and then uh and then they all moved over in January uh and it’s just yeah just normal life like personal life dealing with all that sort of stuff but we’re in a good place how we feel like settled over there some good golfers in the bay unun team uh Thomas Miller’s really good he he love loves his golf he’s like obsessed with golf so uh more so than me to be honest I think he’s been we went recently to Germany and we went to the hiio if we’ve been yet hoing one where they have a massive golf facility fit really Munich I’m sure Thomas Muller’s been his picture was on the wall like a scratch or something yeah well he’s off like I think he’s off like a two but he’s like a good too like he hits it really nice like compresses the ball um so he plays uh a good friend of mine Eric Dyer is going for a bit of a I’ll give him a little shout out he’s going for a bit of a tough spell he was obsessed with golf and then uh he had a tough summer playing he went to like some of the best courses and uh and all of a sudden he’s come back and said he’s retired from golf nice which is you expected in coming in going I’ve retired and you’re like no don’t retire like retired from golf okay I I can’t get my head around it so we’re trying to get him back out of retirement to get out there and play one shot is all it takes I think every golfer can resonate that I’ve probably quit golfed 20 times that you have a round where nothing goes right and you can hit that one shot or that one hole where it just goes right again it’s the most addictive but yet annoying sport on the planet just need to get him out there and then once he has that feeling I think it’ be sweet but can’t retire cuz what what’ you do after football that’s what you professional footballers do after you retire from football you’ve got to play something you got to play golf yeah he’ll be back out there I’ll get him out there it seems like and you’ll know better than us because obviously you’re in the football World it seems like golf has had an an explosion in across all different genres anyway we were talking before about the different musicians that play actors that play different sports people but football in the more recent years you guys seem obsessed with golf like it seems to be everywhere like is that is that what you’ve seen from the inside as well yeah I’d say so I think uh to be honest I think YouTube golf has had a big part to do with that I think um like just from my personal experience you know you get a lot of time away you get a lot of time in hotels so like Lads are always on YouTube always trying to find things to watch and I think obviously YouTube golf has kind of taken a big rise in the last few years and uh and I think that’s helped kind of a lot of players then start the game okay I’ll go out there I’ll try it and uh and yeah it’s big and I think it’s a good switch off like from the from the schedules when you’re playing the pressure of playing every week you know if you can just get a few hours away just switching off I think uh from that side of it it’s not been a big help to people suppose to some degree as well like footballers lend themselves to being really good golfers like the hand eye coordination the fitness the strength the time to some degree to put in them and almost the competitive element like I’m sure you guys are really competitive with each other like you want to go out there you want to beat the other players like it it lends itself so nicer to golf as well yeah and I think that’s why a lot of you know golfers especially a lot of footballers when they retire play end up playing golf because they miss that kind of even just being like in a golf club with with your mates just in that environment a bit of b a bit of uh competitiveness and um yeah I think that’s a big part of it and like I say most of the guys are decent at most sports you know growing up you’re not just playing football you’re playing you know tennis whatever it be cricket and uh so yeah your hand eye ends up pretty good anyway and then uh yeah you know a lot of the lads got power you can smash like smash the ball it all starts kind of at the range smashing a load of balls and you’re like I’ll take that onto the course saw an interesting video in the summer yeah when the England squad and you had was it pter and Sam Hall came visited you though there was some mixed abilities was it sck I think was horrendous from what I remember but didn’t he get good in the end yeah so he was like therez a lot of the lads don’t play like literally haven’t picked up a club before so uh obviously it’s a really good thing uh pts and Sam com in and um just to break up the camp obviously we’ve been been away a long time it’s just to kind of switch off you were staying at a golf course weren’t you yeah we’re staying at they had like two courses there beautiful place uh in Germany and um yeah Lads were trying to get out as much as possible so they organized this go this golf day where you know we just said like all the lads just come out just have a bit of banner just get on the Range so uh like people like be were like uh hasn’t you know played before couldn’t hit the ball to begin with and then PKS gives him a couple of tips and then uh he just starts smashing the ball and there’s like a good video of we’ve done like a little competition of nearest pin uh we done like North uh South and uh yeah all of a sudden he hits this ball and I think he gets one of the closest out of everyone so it was brilliant to watch it was one of my most enjoyable videos this year because like you watch it and it and it just shows the relatability of golf like you see all these you you superstars who are fantastic at your own sport stick a golf club in your hand and suddenly look inferior look like they can’t achieve that that kind of shot really and you could see the frustration because again that competitive element kicks in yeah when they couldn’t get it right it was just like yeah there that it’s just like that desire to get like to be good at something cuz just yeah a lot of the lads like I say had never played but it was just like they want to be good and also they know it’s on camera they want to like they want to perform well so I think for us though as well being obviously myself and Rick have played golf like all our lives I was horrendous at football don’t think Rick was much better I love s him at five as side he’s not too bad but like growing up at golf was my Sport and it was just so uncool and I remember I’d get picked up from the golf club with Mom and Dad get out the car at home and like the public bus would go past and I’d be petrified of any kids who I knew might be on this bus and I’d hid my golf B till the bus had gone past and then walk in with my golf clubs but now thanks to you guys obviously thanks to YouTube but footballs as well and celebrities playing golf and making it cooler it does seem like it’s if you are a kid growing up football might still be a go-to sport but golf’s not a bad alternative I think they’re realizing now as well that almost footballers and golf come hand inand a little bit and I’ve seen a big Trend in that as well where they might be still aspiring to be footballers but they’re kind of like actually I need to be good at golf as well because it kind of works together what what was your background then in golf how did you kind of start were you were you a young golf I weren’t young was probably about 14 or 15 uh it was actually my uncle uh took me you know just to the golf course one day and again it was more just I just used to smash the ball around and enjoy just kind of Smashing it and it wasn’t until I was about uh I was about 18 I’d say and uh I had a summer where I didn’t have no tournaments with the national team um I had like six weeks off and I kind of just played golf every day and I went from like a 18 in handicap I’d say to about a 10 handicap in that in that period And I just from that moment I was just obsessed like just every trying to play as much as possible but obviously in the meantime still trying to make it as a professional footballer I hadn’t quite uh made it I’d been on loan and stuff at that stage so um and then from there yeah just kind of year by year you know as I played more handicap come down uh probably the lowest I’ve got to I’d say is probably like a a two handicap you know when I’d say a few years ago I was playing at a real decent level uh and now I’m kind of back up to like a four but I’ve been around that that kind of form mark for a while I find it hard to really get down it’s just it’s just time as well you know not getting loads of time to practice you know I’m playing maybe once a month or once every six weeks and and that’s a frustration part as well because you know I want to I’m someone who wants to improve at everything so when you’re kind of coming in and out of golf playing one minute and then you’re playing ration and you you got one day you’re looking forward to so much and you have a terrible day it’s like it’s pretty demoralizing but uh but yeah that’s kind of it really and love watching golf um you know from same sort of age really grew up OB watching tiger and and then boy and Rory and um and yeah just you know just love watching it and just love the game really was he was I right in saying that that when you’re at Spurs was there a a short game area or a putting green or something as well there was but it never got used it’s almost one of them like I think half the Les didn’t know if it was a test to see like uh who was hanging about and you know this who’s in the gym or who’s out there playing golf so yeah they’ve uh they had like this little pting green uh they had a couple of them and it’s literally just outside the where where you park your cars um and I mean yeah it was there you know I was I was there for like seven seven years I’ve been in the training around eight years and I maybe used it three or four times so like the lads just and and even me and also like when you when you did want to play golf you just you just shut down and went to one of the local golf courses and played there so uh it didn’t get used a lot cuz there was there was one very exciting email I got about five or six years ago you might have been aware of it or not and it came across and it got emailed to me by one of the companies that we were with at the time and it was like Rick Shields times Harry Kane times Tiger Woods that sounds pretty exciting and I remember opening the email and it was legit I was like oh my and basically it was going to be this idea that I was going to come down to the training ground with you we go on the short game are do some videos and then tiger was going to call in and set us a challenge and it never materialized would happen then I think maybe something kicked in that made it never materialize and and still to this day I’ve got that email like saved I’m like that was that was an opportunity that unfortunately slipped past just hoping it comes back around potentially one day yeah was because it I mean it’s just ethic I mean obviously again tiger you know has helped so many people get into golf and and seeing what he’s done as a professional sports person do you ever kind of look at that and go what like what he’s achieved in golf is just like astronomical yeah absolutely you know he’s the for me he’s the the best ever in golf and I think just that inspiration of trying to come the best you know I’m I’m in that process now I want to improve I want to get better and and I think just seeing someone dominate their sport as much as he did uh obviously golf’s a little bit different in terms of his individualized and it’s just his mindset but uh you can still take a lot of things like that and I think um yeah he was someone you know just as a sports person I looked up to growing up uh and it’s actually a great story I’ve actually played with tiger no way here we go here we go this is what we need talk about playing with tiger so wow uh it’s a great story it was I was out in the Bahamas I go to the Bahamas on when I get my time off I’ve gone out like I didn’t didn’t know he’s there and um where we go is kind of you just you’re on buggies everywhere you just travel like to the gym on buggy Golf Course buggy go to the pool on the buggy so I’m traveling on the buggy and uh the golf pro I knew there is just like we was driving part each other and he was like ah H uh how you doing just catching up I haven’t seen him for a while and he was like oh by the way um I’m playing with tiger in the afternoon he’s going to play and he’s like one of them I was like yeah yeah just give me a shout like cuz it was like the way he said it was just like a throw away like yeah of course I’ll play but I didn’t want to seem like like over keing so I was like yeah just give me a text of you’re playing so anyway done Jim got with my day I was going next three hours you on the drive and race yeah so no I was I was with my wife and we we had lunch with some friends and we went to their house had some lunch and had no signal in in the in the house I’m sitting there at lunch and I hope he’s not like Mees messaging me here so uh anyway couple of hours lunch get out and as I’m walking to to our like house um get like three four text messages come through it once B bam and it’s the golf pro saying oh tiger said come play the b nine with us and this was like an hour an hour ago so I’m like ah what’s going on so I text are you still playing he said yeah tiger said come meet us on uh on 14 just finished in the 14th so you played hard to get no no it’s like I didn’t even think was going to happen so I kind of just like weren’t even really thinkings I’ve just gone up to the house got changed buggy up to the golf course more like excited nervous like don’t know what to expect get up to the course guy takes me on to the 14th and uh yeah he’s like finishing the 14th hole so I kind of just meet him there and he goes hi on tiger Harry and then he kind of just walks off and he finishes finishes out the hole so now we walk onto the 15th and it’s a it’s a par five so uh We’ve not we’ve only really said hello at this point he hits his t-shot the pro he playing with’ hit his t- shot and and this T box I swear was like just like from me to you away it wasn’t big at all and I’m teing the ball up here I’m flustered I’m nervous like I’m excited you’ve not really warmed up not I’ve just driven straight out to the course so I’m just thinking just hit this ball in the air like again my golf was quite erratic at that stage where I could top the ball th the ball but like I could hit it far as well so I’m like just hit the SP in the air please anyway te it up just te it up high hit this good drive into the Fairway that bit of a icy kind of high one uh but that was it just like I was off the first team at least like tiger knows I can hit the ball I’m not like a a chopper so um yeah anyway so we we he was walking at the stage cuz like I say he was coming back from his injury so I was in a buggy he was walking with his caddy uh so again I haven’t really like got a chance to talk to him I’m kind of just playing gol with him alongside him yeah without having even spoke to him uh so get up to my ball uh hit like a it’s par five so hit like a high one out just like green side it like a short it’s a perfect to be honest looking back it was a perfect hole but it was just like a short par five like couldn’t there weren’t lows of danger so I hit one up near the green um and then kind of as I hit the second shot we started like I just uh cuz I was in the the buggy with a PR he kind of drove and I just kind of walked with him and we was just talking like he was just asking what I’m doing here and like just a little bit about football just a little bit of chitchat uh anyway get up to it and I and the green side I kind of got this it’s a simple chip but like out there in Bahamas is that beraud grass anything can happen so I’ve uh so I’ve chipped this ball and you know when you catch it a little bit thin so you looked up quick and it’s kind of just like took a couple things towards the hole and it’s just stopped about 3 foot from the hole so I’m thinking ah he thinks I’m a proper go for now kind of thing anyway mate Birdie on the on the hole and I should have just shook his hand there and just said like oh my nice yeah I think I’m kind of busy I’m yeah I think he made par or something as well so I should have just shook his hand and said great to meet you that’s insane and uh but anyway yeah so brilliant and then uh yeah we played 16 17 18 I think bogy par bogy after that um and then yeah so we we end up in the clubhouse we’re just kind of chatting like over like a bit of lunch but anyway we we ended up meeting that night and then uh we just got on really well we was chatting about it’s funny because the golf was great but then just chatting with him in the evening and just getting to know him a bit personal and like we talking about family and things and spent a few hours then and then as we was leaving uh he kind of said I’m playing 18 in tomorrow if you want to play so then I ended up playing 18 in with him the next morning my and I was only in Bahamas for I think like four days and my wife I just said sorry sorry Kate like that tiger kind of trumped trumped anything here so uh yeah we ended up playing 18 the next morning and uh and then yeah so then that was 2017 so then that 18 hold he shot six under I play terrible like I can’t remember half the shots I hit but uh he shot six under so I kind of knew before anyone else did that he was playing really well and he said this last back surgery he had was really good when he fused the back and uh and obviously 2018 when he won the the tour the Tour Championship yeah TOUR Championship and 19 W won the Masters so yeah I had a little kind of like ining that he was coming back before anyone else incredible so it’s a pretty uh pretty cool story yeah did was there any kind of knowledge you took from him kind of getting more deeper from a professional standpoint was there anything that you picked up on that you were like wow I’m going to try and yeah I say I say maybe the preparation like obviously because he was preparing to then come back into competitive golf um like even though we was out there for fun like with a few mates and stuff you could see in his preparation it weren’t for fun it was like he’s preparing to come back and and be on tour and and I talk a lot about preparation I think preparation is such a big thing in in all sports but in football as well like being uh comfortable um going into games when you’ve prepared well so uh out yeah out of everything I’d say that really was that about coincided with when you actually became England Captain as well was that about the same time frame yeah it was um yeah it was it was a really good like 2017 had a really good season um and then yeah Captain um I think my first game of Captain might have been 2017 and I got given the captaincy in 2018 before the 2018 World Cup uh I think I got told the camp before maybe in like March time um and yeah kind of like becoming the captain which was like one of the biggest most proudest moments of of my career and uh so yeah it was kind of a little uh it was a great little moment yeah what what characteristics does a captain need to have because obviously golf being such an individual sport by the ride of cup where you actually see someone who captains the team or or is you know somebody who who gives instructions in football it’s every single game every single match every single training session like what what’s the characteristics what do you need to have yeah I think like there’s so many different ways and there’s so many different types of leadership that you can have you know for me I’ve always been a I’m not a big streamer and shouter like I mean I’ve always been uh focal when I think something’s not right or I think something needs to be addressed I’ve never been afraid even from a young age to like say what I think’s right so I think that’s one part of leadership but I’m not a big screamer and shouter and like a motivational talker in that sense uh I’m more someone who leads by sample uh i’ like to make sure I’m doing everything that I think the team almost should be doing and you know preparation recovery the way I train and and almost lead by yeah lead by example um and yeah I think like in terms of my leadership I think it’s it’s changed over the years I think I’ve learned from from other people and and not just other captains other like players I played with like Jordan Henderson for me was you know a really great leader and and we was totally different but we complemented each other really well so when we was in the England school together um yeah we had a great balance of uh you know helping the team become as as as as good as we could um and then yeah like I’ve been with with Rooney who was a certain type of Captain who uh maybe a bit similar to me in terms of the leading by example and um yeah like kind of when I when I went into the England team uh it’s one example he phoned me after he he just told me what to expect as being an England player now so all little things you you pick up is uh and again it’s a learning process I feel like you know even these last couple years I’ve learned a lot as a captain as and even like younger players are a bit different to you know when I was younger and just the way they’re they’re playing and and the way they think so just just learning all the time really we’re going to switch the RO a little bit here okay yeah hypothetical scenario okay yeah there is a a football golf Ridder cup type event okay and you are the captain okay and you need a six-man team to go out with you so these are footballers but they’re going to be playing golf who’s in your team footballers playing golf um they have to be good golfers or got Spirit no they’ve I think they’ve a bit of both really I think th so going back to B I think Thomas mow would be in there for sure um great golfer loves it great energy got amazing energy so it’ be great for the team environment um and obviously he’s good yeah good so like really decent go for as well um I’m going to go uh I’ll go James Madison you got to get Madison M and I feel like he he likes that he’s got that P over about him where like he likes that environment he’d be cheing up the crowd and uh so I’d go mads um so two friends of mine Eric Dyer and Matt doy uh two footballers uh that I played with at Tottenham obviously and uh we we had like a little Golf Group there where we was playing nonstop and uh so two guys who they’re both off about about 6 to eight I think I’m not 100% as long as D doesn’t retire well yeah come out of retirement for this so um so I’d have them two on there um do you know what I I’d probably we have from the England School Harry MaGuire is a is a good golfer he’s a Sol I think he’s like four or five golfer he’s got this like bit of a unique swing but it’s just got this little fade that kind of just stays in play so um how many is that that’s like five what I played with who in Theory actually wouldn’t be he’s actually polish technically but Matty cash I played with him recently madis his golf day I think he’s off scratch unreal seriously unal yeah yeah I’ve heard he’s I’ve heard he’s good but I’ve never I’ve never seen rice Dean rice he’s actually here today he he lives 10 minutes away so Prett handy golfer good golfer I think he’s of like a six or eight as well so there’s a few pford pford is a pford is a six or eight but he should be like a a 14 to 16 to be fair sh pford pix I love you but um no pix is a bit bit he’s got short games decent just the long games it strug a bit do you guys as well and you’ve obviously got as a time in hotels rooms you might watch a bit of golf YouTube are you like an equipment nerd you look at the latest drivers and irons and stuff or you just like it’s down the golf and not the clubs yeah not really I’m not a big equipment guy I mean um I’m using like Taylor Maid at the moment and I’ve probably used them for the last few years I’d say I’m not really I like to kind of when new stuff comes out I try and get down and get a fit in I actually want to get a fit in uh soon I’ve had them for quite a while now um but yeah not not big equipment to be honest I kind of whatever is kind of given to me I’ll kind of hit around and and yeah I don’t think I’m good enough to really dial in like the certain clubs if you do go to hiio in Munich is it good honestly really enjoy it um and obviously you now you’re heavily involved it as much as being the clothing the apparel you heavily involved in Reflow as well tell us the connection there yeah Reflow uh come about I want to a couple years ago now uh just really good uh like clothing Brown um you know kind of got approach about kind of doing some investment and doing an ambassador role and um yeah kind of I was looking for something where uh you know I could have a bit of input I could um where like on the go because I was kind of going for a change in in terms of like my sponsorship anyway I was looking for kind of a golf brand that you know I love my golf and I could align with and and Reflow come and uh yeah we kind of just like the way they are as a business kind of aligned with with me as a person um you know everything they’re doing is kind of for like the good of the planet in a way and I just think I was trying to like find someone that that suited me I think with four kids now like looking ahead to the Future and you know what the world’s going to look like just you know I don’t know loads about it but it’s like okay can I start to understand a little bit about that and Reflow have been uh been really good by the way everyone watching and listening uh head to Reflow you get 20% off uh anything on the website uh these guys I’m sure will put it in your description put Link in the description not a problem at all and uh yeah go and check it out I remember when it a palami and Andy Carter okay who also wears it as well like when he first started wearing it I hadn’t heard of the brand much and then over the last few years it it seems to have really grown in popularity one of the things that helped it grow in popular popularity was this inredible superb out this world I mean borderline unbelievable trick you that you achieved yeah I mean I’ve got a lot of questions about that we we have two I mean it went everywhere it was on Sky Sports News it was everywhere I mean that was it was so much fun and so crazy it it was good so that was that was over in Munich that was on this uh this simulated place they have out there and um yeah Andy was there obviously and um yeah the guys were kind of showing me this trick shot and whether it’ be possible or not and um whether it’s first take or not we’ll we’ll keep that quiet or not but we’re going to try and recreate it so we could we could be there a while it took us it took us a while let’s just put it that way it definitely did the trick though it got a lot more people lot more eyeballs aware of fre flow and what you’re doing with them and it was great for us cuz again we talked before about Golf and and and sports people playing golf but to see your commitment to the game of golf and and the future and the planet and stuff it was inspiring to see so it sounds exciting yeah I just think like you know also I’m looking ahead to when I’m finished as well whether that’s in you know 10 years or whenever that may be uh I want to be part of things that I’m still excited about and I know I’m going to love golf for the rest of my life so um you know I’m kind of looking at it so I’m hoping as you know Reflow grows you know we’ll kind of be in that stage where uh I’m watching it grow and also I’ll have more of an input as as I get older as well so uh it’s an interesting Journey like I say things are going really well it’s a great team uh they have and um yeah like I say I’m excited to to see what comes hear me out obviously retirement hopefully is a long way in the future is there a future though let’s say is 10 years where we could see Harry Kane as a captain of a golf club is that a role you’d take on oh that’s a good question that actually I never really never really for I think like if I was 45 whatever retired I thought of playing golf like every day and getting really good and getting out like scratch and being that far at the club he was annoyingly good and then you got the captain role you’re in the clubhouse a lot I can imagine it being a i Captain for like a like good question it’s just effectively being a face of the golf club bit of investment is there on a few days and yeah I mean typically for most golf courses you get free membership might be something you’re interested in you typically get a nice red jacket at a lot of Posh places uh you got to go to a lot of presentations you got you got to do um typical Captain Pro challenges so you and the pro will take on a couple of other members right okay you can normally I believe play any other course in country for free normally so you could go to like ring up a royal berdale just in case you need those har the captain um but it’s more like a face of the club isn’t it yeah it’s more it is it’s typically you know somebody who is an ambassador like a captain of anything yeah a lot of clubs have like don’t they like travel around the like almost the world now playing against other clubs the thing as well yeah well so the captain might again pick the team pick the pick the favorite guys at the golf in the dress room beforehand I suppose that it was quite interesting when you said that before about this kind of idea that a golf club is similar to a golf football club because like you say it’s the locker room it’s banter it’s you know I kind of forget those things really banter in the car park yeah I think that’s the biggest thing like talking to the pros who retired now that’s the biggest thing they miss is just like cuz like for us like every day we work we’re pretty much 49 48 weeks a year you’re going into training every day seeing you know 25 Lads 30 Lads having a bit of B training in the gym and then when you’re finished it’s like it’s just that’s it you don’t unless you go to like these clubs golf clubs or tennis clubs or whatever it may be you just it just stops so and although you you like make friends along that time and like but I’d say you probably only make a handful of like close friends cuz the rest of them are just kind of you do your own thing you end up in different country so it’s not like you stay in touch with all every team you play with you know you only like I say from you know all my time I’d say close friends and maybe three or four that I’d you know still really click yeah that you still talk to all the time and that so um yeah that’s why golf clubs now I think are are great for kind of that feeling obviously growing up a young harricane wanted to be a footballer Etc you’ve You’ you’re living the dream of of millions of people around the world I mean bar being a YouTuber now I think footballer might be the mo the second most desirable job on a career path but like it it is Wild is it like do you ever do you genuinely ever pinch yourself or or will it be a point where you are retired and you sat at a golf course maybe being a captain that you’ll think I lived majority of people’s dream job I think that’s like cuz I think just in football now and and just this and all sports and in all life really there’s so much pressure I think with social media there’s a there’s a lot of pressure there’s a lot of scrutiny and I think sometimes it’s easy to forget what you’re doing as well because of what comes with it it’s not all it’s not all highs there some lows that comes with it so it’s like balancing that but like I say when you actually like take yourself back like I’m someone who tries to do that quite a lot and just remember you know all the hard work all the sacrifice it took to get to where I’m now what I’m doing and and living the dream that you know I wanted to do my whole my whole life um so I really try and like take those moments in and you know when you break records or you plan at Wembley or all these things um they are important to you know kind of soak in but they hard whilst you’re still playing cuz it’s always for me it’s always just about the next thing and the next thing you know like you like I got 100 caps the other day which was one of the proudest moments of my career but then it’s like okay you got a game like a week later or a few days later so it’s hard to really to really process it or I think it will be kind of when you stopped and you’re kind of looking back and um yeah and you maybe talking to your kids or whatever it may be that that would be probably the moment you kind of take it all in and be like wow that was uh yeah that was a special kind of Journey because it does sound ridiculous because a lot of people listening will obviously maybe not appreciate this but you really don’t get an awful lot of downtown like you have really busy schedules certainly when it’s International Summers yeah like obviously the last few Summers have been crazy for you like you very rarely get a block of solid time off yeah it’s one of those and it’s obviously a big talking point at the moment in in football in terms of the schedule and and the amount of games and and for me it’s one of them like I love playing football so like I’m never going to complain about playing football the one thing I’d say is it’s almost just become like a like a cycle of if we play the same amount of games I’d rather play them in a shorter period so play the same amount of games but play in a shorter period and actually have like a block off when you only get like 3 weeks off it’s like before you know it you’re kind of say for the euros and we’ve gone through this long season we’ve gone through you know the highs of the euros and then that big low of losing the final and then before you’ve processed it all you’re back preseason starting again so it’s really hard to kind of like take it all in and I think not just physically but I think mentally that’s where a lot of people struggle to to kind of go again and go again um what what’s it like obviously the last three or four Summers we’ve had some incredible England Journeys like you have give the na you and the team have give the nation something to really cheer about and for for a long time the team struggled and it’s like now every time every going into a major tournament it’s like we’re going to do well we’re going to get to the semis we’re going to get to the final like what genuinely what’s it like walking leading your team out in a Euros final like what that must be crazy I can’t comprehend and again that’s part of like you know when you talk about dreams come like coming true like you know we hadn’t been to a final in 50 or or 60 years you know as an as an England team so um when you know I first got into the team it was like okay can we start to become good can we start to like get far in tournaments and then obviously got to the semi-final in Russia which was amazing amazing tournament in 2018 and then the next one the Euros we obviously get to get to the final and it’s like you’re walking out at Wembley in a in a euro final it’s like you don’t get much bigger than that and then the hardest part about is you’re going from you know like penalty shootout against Italy for example you’re a penalty shootout away from having the highest of high as a professional footballer as an England player and as as a nation as well as a nation you know how much it means to everyone I’ve been a fan like you know you just know all that going into the game and then you lose that and then like yeah six seven hours later I’m sitting in my bedroom that I haven’t been in for like eight weeks just staring at the ceiling thinking I should be out like celebrating celebrating now so then so then obviously you go through tough moments like that and then the World Cup you know he was having a great tourament and obviously a really tough personal moment for me missing missing the penalty and you know having to to process that and um you know it’s the first time in my career I’ve kind of missed like a big chance in in a big game like that so you know having to you know have that low and and like almost motivate me more to then come back and like be even better so uh and I felt like I’d done that especially in an England shirt you know had a really good year after that in in an England shirt and uh and then obviously you know getting into another final uh this summer which was a again a different experience because we wasn’t playing as well as we knew we could that expectation was a little bit higher than what it had been in other tournaments but still like finding a different way to get to a final but then you know in that one I think we had so much belief it was kind of ours and our tournament and then the same thing to you know have that just taken away from you in in in that moment and then you know again you’re you’re coming back and you know you’re sorting out holidays and sorting out getting away it’s just uh it’s tough so that youve you have so many Highs but also you have the lows that come with it but you know I think just coming away from those tournaments just make you more motivated and uh we are in a good plays we’ve got a really good team um and it’s just now yeah just trying to find a way to get over that next step it’s well second place in in a football tournament is one of the worst like emotionally draining positions to finish in if you came second in the open you’d be buzzing yeah for a lot of people second in the the Olympics as well is Olympics you get silver medal like a lot of people are so proud where because you it’s that moment where it’s I think yeah I think that’s the hardest part about I think like you go through so much sacrifice in a major tournament like you’re away from your family you’re away from uh friends so you’re in this like bubble for I think we away for like seven weeks so you’re kind of in the hotel for seven weeks with same people you see what everyone’s dedicating you see but all the staff as well all the analysts all the chefs all the uh medical staff you see what they’re they’re sacrificing as well and it’s almost like to win obviously you want to win for yourself you want to win for the team you want to win for the country uh but you also want to win so you can like celebrate what you’ve just been through together and and when you lose in the like when you lose a final it’s like it’s just bam every that’s very lonely yeah cuz everyone just then goes in their own way you don’t get a chance to say f you say thank you but you don’t get a chance to say like just reminisce over what you’ve been through you don’t have those drunken hugs where you love you yeah exactly man you know I think it’s those things yeah just going through all that sacrifice and then it just being like sweep from underneath that’s that’s and then and then all a sudden you’re back with your families and and you’re like you got your kids running around and then it’s like you’re in a totally different like mindset again um and everyone’s kind of saying I’m really sorry what happened it’s almost like you’ve lost something it’s almost like grieving it’s like an empty feeling like you go away and uh it takes you know some people longer than others but it takes time to to Really process it and and like I say that’s why when you only get a few weeks it’s like before you know it and sometimes it’s in a good way cuz before you know you’re back playing and it’s like okay you like you’ve moved on now you have to get on with it so it has it it has its pros and cons but um yeah I think just the fact that you can’t just celebrate with each other because everyone’s so down and so uh and like I say you look at Olympics and you know it’s still a great achievement to get to a final of Eur back toback finals we’re doing things that you know England teams have never done in history but yet you can’t really like process it so it’s it’s a shame but I think like I said I think it motivates you know especially the lads to to be back there and and you know trying to try and get one step further I think what you guys though have done partly by doing so well and I think with what Gareth did so well in bringing the team together and also things like the England social media but every time there’s a tournament now war games I personally get I’m watching you guys arrive at St George’s Park and get out a taxi dapp in a taxi drive and I’m watching it it glued to it and I think I myself I think you’re the same Rick last few years I’ve become a much bigger England fan because of all those facts as well so even though we haven’t won the tournaments and we haven’t got silver wereare I feel so much more like patriotic when England play now because of that so much prouder like you like genuinely now like we think we’re going into every tournament with a real real chance I think Gareth like Gareth needs to take a lot of credit for that you know when he come in because I played in 2016 when we lost to Iceland in the when uh and that’s a real low time and there’s a real disconnect from England and the fans at that point and then when Gareth come in and got the job he made it a real uh you know a real focal point to reconnect with the fans and uh he started doing things like lad’s doing like more individual media so like getting cuz obviously sometimes when you go of England it’s normally the captain that talks and you only normally get like two or three players that you end up seeing so Gareth made it like no let’s like everyone’s got so many good personalities we’re all just normal lads who Liv in the dream who want to make England proud so it was like okay well let’s showcase that you know let’s have a bit more of an insight to everyone in the squad get to know everyone even from a media point of view and I think we built up a really good relationship with with everyone with the media with the fans and also by performing like the 2018 World Cup was like the first time getting to a semi-final of a World Cup it’s like okay we’re starting to the fans are starting to believe again a little bit and then yeah just doing what we don’t we have to perform on the pitch to to build that relationship with the fans um but yeah Gareth was really big on that and um yeah I think we’re at a place now where you know we have a great relationship and it’s just a bit different in terms of expectation now now we’re expected to win it’s a slight different so now we have to handle that and and that’s all part of the process you know like we’re all learning I think the younger Lads in the team that this tournament especially was the first time we’ kind of gone in as favorites and so it’s a different pressure to handle and uh we found a way to get to where we wanted to get to but it was just a bit of a rocky road answer this honestly what do you get more nervous about a first t- shot or playing with tiger or or literally starting a football match no playing with yeah playing with because it’s just you’re outside your comfort zone you know like where we do so much training we do so much playing like when you’re going like I actually love like that feeling of going into into games um but yeah if you put me up in a proam now or something like that on the first tier with a few th there I’d be uh I’d be nervous yeah I think it’s obviously because it’s just not what you’re used to doing all the time but I mean I think golf is such a different one as well though because I think you analyzed on every single connection with the golf ball where football your first touch might not be perfect but then you can bang one in the second touch you don’t get the opportunity in golf as much like every shot got so much more time to think in golf I mean I’m horrendous at football but the ball comes to you and you have to do some with it quickly for us but like with golf you’ve got walk into the next shot and there’s so much more time golf’s brutal for like I think mentally one of the tougher sports like for for golfers you just you got no one to blame you got no excuses it’s you and only you and you have your caddy and people have the caddies but um being under that like I’m thinking of the pros being under that pressure in those moments and it’s just all on you that’s that’s mentally you know really really hard to to be able to be and that’s why like people like tiger and that you have so much appreciation for what they’ve done but uh yeah go golf’s are pretty brutal and and can be lonely sport I’d imagine what um what’s the goals with your golf do you have do do you have any goals at all let’s say over the next if we’re sitting down and having this same conversation in 10 years yeah what what does Harry golf Harry Kane’s golf career look like yeah I mean the aim at the moment is to try get to stretch but I’m really struggling to kind of get from yeah but just get from that four to that like is is tough it’s a tough jump to make um yeah I mean I don’t really know I think um you know again as I’m starting to come to the end uh whenever that may be I think yeah I’d like to play in like some like golf tournament some golf events and um I had some a little experience with the icons I don’t know if you heard of was that in New York that’s in New York a couple years ago now but that was really good that was just close to like like a ride the cup I think as like we’ get as Sports people or or celebrities and um really really good offend it was kind of like new so like there was a lot of uh like things that were good and some that needed tweak him but yeah you’re you’re playing in front of a couple thousand fans and um yeah like ride the cup Styles so you like we one of them was like um alterate shot and you’re playing with another and just that pressure of like not letting your teammate down all that stuff was was fun and then obviously have a ously successful clothing branding yeah well I’m hoping Reflow yeah we uh yeah we keep growing and keep building and and see where that takes us I think we got a big future ahead I mean to get some golfers and to you know see it on tour and I think that that’ be the the best I think what we need to say potentially to give you that little bit of motivation out to scratch be you Harry Kane versus Gareth Bale on the Rick Shields golf YouTube channel yeah 18 well he’s been retired for a year or so go game be pretty uh that would be a game I think I’ve heard uh I’ve not I didn’t actually when he was at Spurs for that period a couple seasons ago I didn’t actually play with him um I think he’s about scratch is he he’s a low handicap he’s at one or two like uh would you take him but I think he’s just like see I never say I wouldn’t take I always back you drive him you know what some distance I used to be like a big hitter like I used to be a big hitter and now I’m just feel like I’m just just a mid order the pack man well today why don’t we have a Harry Kane sensible t- shot but then give give a couple a little bit rev it up a bit you you versus Rick long even though you’re team you have the longest drive I think we should do and then also what um if we’re going to sit here in top out retirement yeah let’s say you’ve put your feet up you’ve hung the football boots up yeah what what’s left to achieve in in the career what what’s the real big goals um yeah for me I feel like there’s still so much more to achieve I mean I’ve done so much in in my career but um obviously at by now to win the biggest trophy so you know to win the Bundesliga to win the champions league would be uh would be a dream and then I think with England you know massive World Cup in America which is going to be really special uh and I think we’ve got a really good chance obviously a lot of work from now on to then but um yeah just to you know start trying to get them trophies you know it’s been uh you know tough for me in terms of that sense you I’ve had some close moments and um you know from like I said having the ultimate dreams of the euros and Champions League final and uh things like that but um but yeah I still feel like I’ve got plenty left in the in the tank and you know they’re my ultimate goals we certainly want is it in two years the world the yeah 26 yeah we really want to see you lifting the World Cup in America cuz I just I mean it’s just fair dream country in our lifetime we need England need to win a World Cup we do do thank you very much Harry for your time awesome um enjoy like enjoy the video we’re about to film cuz hopefully I think it’s going to be good some the sun looks like it’s coming out thankfully and uh good luck for the rest of your football career thank you very much and your golf career cheers thank you

  1. Who designed the furniture/ room colour scheme? Like a Telly Tubby set? Sidekick looks a little boy in a sweet shop 😂

  2. Great podcast 🎉🎉🎉🎉… please do more content with footballers. Podcast or on course content. Great job boys. Keep up the good work. 🎉🎉 cheers from Toronto. These are the types of content that differentiate this channel from others

  3. As a massive spurs and golf fan, Kane vs bale would be an unreal video. Make it happen Rick! Son and Ben Davies as caddies!

  4. I just don’t see a world where a shaved head isn’t the better option. I think Rick would look fine with a shaved head to be fair. Keeping that look is a real choice, but hey. It’s his head his choice

  5. Feel like this is the most un scripted iv seen Harry talk , being a captain of England he’s always made to talk like a robot but he seems really relaxed and relatable as human here more than iv heard before.

  6. He’s right about football schedules, amount of games in that new CL format, all for money, don’t care about player welfare

  7. It's crazy that as an English speaker, I can only understand about 30% of what your guest is saying. I'm sure it was a great convo.
