Not everyone can be a competitor in the U.S. Open, but if you live in Oklahoma, you can get some swings in on some of the best golf courses in the state.
Golf Digest ranked the golf courses in each state against one another and then ranked each course within its state. Two of Oklahoma’s top courses are ranked among the nation’s best, both located in the state’s largest cities.
Golf in Oklahoma is most associated with Perry Maxwell, the father of Oklahoma golf. Originally from Kentucky, the man went on to become one of the nation’s top golf course architects in the 1920s and 1930s, designing more than 30 courses in Oklahoma after he relocated to the Sooner State.
Here are the top golf courses in Oklahoma, according to Golf Digest.
What aspects set Oklahoma golf courses apart?
Two of Oklahoma’s best golf courses appeared on Golf Digest’s list of the best golf courses in the nation.
The top spots, one in Edmond and another in Tulsa, were designed by different architects: Pete Dye for Oak Tree National and Perry Maxwell for Southern Hills Country Club, respectively.
For the Edmond course, the 18 holes are described as “one of Pete Dye’s sternest tests of golf,” with hills throughout and numerous water hazards. Meanwhile, the Tulsa course is known for its hole bends, critical tee shots and classic putting surfaces.
Both courses are regarded as among the best of their respective designers.
