We Played Golf With No Handicaps – But Different Tees!

In this video Rick Shiels a PGA Golf Professional plays 9 holes against, James Robinson a former DP World Tour player and Guy Charnock a single figure amateur golfer. There are no shots given, and no handicaps, however, to keep the game interesting the guys are playing from different tee boxes. James is playing from the back tees, Rick is from the middle tees and Guy is from the front tees!

in this video we’ve got a bit of a challenge going on as you can see I’m here from the yellow tea markers the standard TE’s here at Royal Liverpool i’ve got a match against James Robinson extor professional and Guy Charik that you see on the podcast and I think where are the guys well the handicap twist is James Robinson is going to be teen off all the way back there from the back tease making it much harder you might think well where’s Guy how is this going to work out well Guy is all the way over there on the front TE’s nine holes stroke play here at Hoy Lake i think this is going to be the best level we’ve had so far we’ve done three this is the third match we’ve had the first one we had different eras of clubs that we used in the most previous video that we just actually filmed on the front nine guy had 14 clubs i had nine james only had four where now this is differences in tea length but we have all our clubs in the bag all our normal clubs without further ado I’ll let you get back all the way to James I’m watching tea off from the back bat te’s well this first hole from here for James it’s 392 you’ve got 358 Rick and I’ve got 310 so I’ve got 80 yards on James and basically 50 on you so that is my embarrassing if I knock it past you wouldn’t it be it will happen come on then stroke play nine holes back n at Roy Liverpool a Little Leveler match is this the leveler oh for God’s sake that’s so nice that’s nailed you missed that drive it’s hard to hit the fairway on the top it’s a very difficult fairway to it so par four dog leg left but the fairway cambers to the right yeah nailed that Jim okay so standard tease for me not too far back not too far forward let’s try and put a good nine hoes of golf together oh that’s nailed is that on them no no that’s fine come on the trap bit of rough but it’s bouncing yeah it should be fine let’s take this nice long walk to my tea you know what though obviously I’ve lost these last couple of matches and might well lose again today but I have to make a decision do I hit drivers and try and gain on them or because driver Cam is a bad club i hit my irons off TE’s keep it in play and then kind of trust my other clubs i don’t know it’s an interesting one hit driver hit driver okay smash it okay so this is my first T- shot 80 yards ahead of James going to go for a mini driver oh that’s not good it’s a great start okay good start near Rick friendly see that’s where really should have just gone with an iron put it in play strategy is important okay so first hole my advantages have straight away been diminished because I’ve hit a T-shot behind these two who were 50 60 yards and 80 yards behind me um 110ish yards i’m going to try and smash a gap wedge i killed great shot broke my wrist but I’ll take that okay 100 yards pretty much it is into wind but I’m going to hit a low 56 degree wedge did you Paul he out drove me from 80 yards behind doesn’t bother me it doesn’t affect my ego at all don’t even care well that’s potential is that going to get stuck on the bank oh yeah it’s up maybe a touch touch too much power right then James you’ve definitely got the distance but have you got the finesse that I possess i think so 95 yards off an ups slope just a little wedge straight into the wind that could be A1 yeah nice shot yeah great shot Jimmy well maybe a little bit past it all point for birdie this is a little right to left they’re slightly down the hill wind’s also helping it wind oh bang on line little bit slow i thought it was going to be rapid something that Rick said on the tea that really stuck in my head was that from these TE’s even though they are you know a back tea James can still shoot under par like quite easily that means that we have to which is a strange feeling for me because that’s not normally how I play golf bought my forward TE’s let’s get under path let’s kick things off good pace i think you’ve got to come in with this mindset today that the par fives are par fours your par threes are going to be short and your par fours are going to be fairly short i have to feel like I’m Bryson do you remember him actually saying on the podcast about getting used to playing off the front and getting used to being underpowered and not getting nervous yeah that’s a good point yeah that’s the plan get used to making birdies right to go one under early okay feels good little poker no nice par right over that a little bit speed was good easy bar let’s see if I can match you of course he can never in doubt right level par through one i think it’s the fairest test we’ve had so far well Dave three easy paws because all the other two videos we’ve had so far we’ve never had it where after the first hole everyone’s been on the same score no I I did like the one that formed me though where guy made was it a nine i don’t know i forgot about that i forget my bad holes i don’t remember them but it is available on YouTube check it out a few videos ago okay par three camera but 11th hole i’ve got 175 into the wind off the left so I’m going to hit I’m going to hit a sixiron you want to try and keep it left of that flag it is very close to the right edge the left edge of the green and drift it into the middle try and fly it one down cut a little now should be good there we go thank you the only problem with not being able to play off the same TE’s here I can’t learn off can’t learn off James’ clubing um it’s a great shot thank you is it We’re 20 I’m 25 yards further forward here what do you think’s the holes are going to make the biggest difference it’s the par fives or the par threes or the par fours i don’t know it’s got to be the par fives surely i’d say the par fives like the par threes doesn’t matter how far it is you can still hit the green can’t you and you can still miss it from a short distance as well can you we’ll see that in a minute oh towed it i’m in that awful spot settle down dreadful spot oh that’s awful not ideal that was a toe shank that was like a toe shanked it were you trying to knock it down don’t know what I was trying to do mate okay so I’ve got 133 what did you two have i had 175 i had 150 oh so it’s nice bit of distance so obviously the big thing for me there I get to hit less club which in theory and that’s the key word theory should go closer but okay i’m going to go for a little soft nine iron oh hold up that was very very weak oh we’ve really let James in we’re having a chipping comp we’ve really let James in here guys oh no i think we I think we were too close to the green i actually feel more pressure because I’ve got this advantage got this gift that’s been given to me and I feel like if I don’t capitalize on it I’m letting myself down so weirdly do you feel pressure which is mad this is arguably Rick and you’re in the same boat with the hardest golf shot on the course because I don’t know why you could have a harder shot very burly eye bunker to get over it being down if it was downwind downhill and downwind would be worse but I’m going to play this really really aggressively and confidently i’m going to open the face and utilize a little bit of the bounce play into the breeze let it sit down front foot a bit clunky okay decent now okay spin it’s a beautiful backdrop incredible setting let’s hit a great golf shot oh it’s been hard a delightful thank you delightful very nice a bit of a left to right two good shots from those boys see if we can open up a lead looks good oh it just died on him good putt a lot of swing at the end good put that would have been a That would have been a big separator then if you to hold that big separator really made your puts look long yeah we still need both these guy beautiful cool as a cucumber that was a good up and down that was a good up and down thank you good par from that tea that’s right at the front of the green miss easy to miss it down there yeah it was really good always miss it short right right everyone’s level through two getting excited with this one okay long way from back here it’s 410 into the wind not a good start coming back to stretch my legs all the way back here these foreign lands see what a real man’s golf course looks like show on the line here that big old house I’d like to buy it’s probably not far off is it let’s give driver a good rip oh wow footwork like Scotty there that was literally A1 that’s good i think yeah it’s good okay James hit a good one i can go probably just a touch further left than James going to go at the White House lovely swing great shot wow tough school really is straight ball that one yeah it’s a Wow it wasn’t quite what I was going for but it’s good it’s safe okay so for the first time this round I’m not going to smash my proper driver no mini driver it’s the big dog and really try and capitalize in this forward tea oh that’s a big push that’s not good got a line you might You might have the longest second shot hi okay so considering I had the easiest t-shot I’m the one who’s found the horrendous stuff thankfully because there’s obviously three of us playing and a few camera people we found it which I don’t know if I’m happy about or not um I’m going to have to just chip it out there’s nothing I can do here there’s no point being cocky happy with that well out yeah thanks you can literally break your wrist in this stuff that hurt how far have you got 140 [Music] probably playing like 157 155 i like those chances okay i’m going to go nine iron just going to flight it a little bit lower that could be great oh what a shot playing about that far past that looks real that was really nice that looks Oh real 122 straight into the wind bit of a down slope wedge wow came out low is that a big down slope oh oh wow oh uhoh wow fell asleep there should not have been going at that flag okay Rick hit a phenomenal golf shot there looks like he’s about 7 to 8 foot left the pin so he’s got a great chance at birdie james in a horrendous spot so he could be very lucky to make par maybe bogey so if I get this up and down for par if big if that would be uh probably a decent spot in the game really so about a 60 yard pitch i like it if it spins no it’s a bit big nice it’s okay need to go up a huge ups slope and then back onto a down slope to try and get lucky with a bang one into the bank have another go on the house have another go have another go son that was so bad i deserve that genuine question why would you not put it i’ve never hit a P from this far away from the green in my life i wouldn’t know i wouldn’t know how to hit it fair point that’s better that’s really good mate great recovery that’s what it should have been silly boy yeah fair play they don’t like chirping people when they’re playing badly not that James has played badly but he’s given me quite a lot today so seeing him hit those kind of shots like that I’m quite enjoying it n I don’t really deserve apart from that T-shot right oh this will be a big swing you two are just chirping away at each other i’ll try and knock this one in for birdie oh didn’t move left looked high all the way slightly didn’t it that absolutely nailed that lucky P go on Jimmy jokes aside knock her in that is really annoying i would have liked to have birded that [Music] good five mate that could have easily turned into a double i know compounding one error with the next one over one over level par had a little adjustment here on the fourth hole that we’re playing we’ve taken James back there’s actually an open T we’ve got him off the open tee i’ve then also come back one so I’m pretty much playing off what James should have been playing off guys still playing off the front front teeth so there’s a bigger gap there she’s actually getting a golf cart to his teg right now oh tow hook horrible the last thing I needed in the left roof got nowhere it’s not good if I don’t win this hole there’s something wrong cuz 150 yards is crazy rick’s about 100 maybe 80 yards behind me sounded good cover the bunker great shot that That has gone a long way okay so my driving has been pretty bad it’s no secret but I’d be crazy not to just try and get as much advantage as possible i hope it’s okay it could be in some quite long stuff but we’ll see 326 to the flag i’d love to hit three wood but that lie is just not quite good enough a little bit sat down got it at my fivewood downwind so it should go a long way pushed it right that’s never going to get there we’ll get close three little ducks away 222 yards downwind hard i’m just going to hit a five iron i don’t even think it’s a hard one of these it’s a nice one straight at the flag let’s see if we can get on the green little little lucky eagle no missed the bunkers don’t if it’s in that green side bunker i think you flew him Paul yeah I just don’t know if it’s in that green side one okay so you’ve hit me with block with that T-shot that is where the advantage comes in i’ve got 164 left in the hole for me is 364 that was about 300 yards admittedly there’s loads of wind behind so that helped me hugely so I’ve got like a pitching wedge left in because it’s going to go and bounce a lot so if I get a nice pitch wedge on the green in two that’s going to give me a big advantage right on it oh it hit the dip that was literally right on it from where I was it’s going that little dip before it which apparently isn’t a bunker but it’s like a little valley should have been the nine after all okay 60 yards left not too bad have to try and hit some height here it’s like a a grass bunker before the green got to float it over that try and land it on the green give it a chance get down haven’t got it much closer than that it’s pretty tough thought I was going to go in the bunker short but pin high loads of green to work with so I’ve really got no excuse i should be looking to hold this great chip lovely gave it a chance well done okay 54° just nudge it on the green let the wind and the pace the green just take up to the flag hopefully nearly very good not quite right to get back to level for James and for Guy come on give it a chance into the wind be aggressive ah not a bad putt just always that little bit low on far away from the hole get start getting it closer simple as that you mean on the foot or the shot the wedge the wedge shot right Rick to get to under par i don’t like it when it slopes left but the wind’s pushing it right just inside the right edge oh I think the wind took it just must have done cuz literally everything was telling me I should have gone left that’s a really bad five middle of the fairway oh there’s a bit of a bad par that is it yeah good bird got a bird well if I’m calling it a par five then yes it was a birdie but I feel a bit guilty about it not many not many this is a tough par four straight back into the wind it’s always one of the harder longer holes this one so let’s get that driver working great shot stay short of them right little bit of an advantage again about 20 yards if that um just got to avoid the bunkers just just left of that white house sitting dry he please miss it i think he cleared it did he clear it oh wow okay great it’s hard to tell that’s it awesome is that one on the left shorter this one on the left short yeah all right good no then the cut again ah it’s all right decent T-OT but I’ve got 195 to the flag flag’s right at the back on this hole so anything just short of it is good 195 i’m going to hit a four iron cuz it’s into the wind it’s a good hit slightly left just going to miss the green a small chip wouldn’t be too bad okay so here’s my T-shot literally one two yards from me out of bounds i hit one off camera just a bit of a practice before we left the tea box and absolutely smoking it middle of fairway which is annoying it’s in there somewhere but it’s trying to access that when we’re playing a comp it’s hard i got 185 i was going to hit a six iron which might actually be enough club weirdly but I want to try and just chase it up there see what I can do that was struck nice but it’s probably not going to be enough as I said it’s okay really good drive um covered the bunker comfortably just not literally clinging on the left side of the fairway which is nice just slightly annoyingly it’s just finished on a on a touch of a downhill slope however I’m going to use that as my advantage because it is into wind so I feel like this is help going to help bring it out a little bit lower eight iron in hand 162 back pin just want to leave this just short of the flag fatted it really fatted it few too many times to have it driver good and then not capitalized that was a terrible shot need to uh need to come back here with a really really good shot into breeze just going to play it a touch lower and just run it on up onto that back tier it’s kind of a bit skinny but it’s working ah shouldn’t be having that put for par after being middle being on the fairway mrs green just slightly long and left faced with bit of nice fringe to put through and quite a big break left to right as it goes up the tear it’s all about trying to get this dead i’m going to use the the Rick method got putter yeah pretty good nice shot James take that from the putting king okay this is my longest put of the day i believe it’s a good 50 foot maybe even 60 foot 50 50 i don’t think so more that says 5060 what would you say need a yardage on that never mind the footage i quite literally missed the sweet spot by about an inch okay for par Rick come on it’s not going to break that much oh that’s a really disappointing five there it’s two bad fives in a row a should have been could have should have would have been two under now I’m one over give it a run did do what are you now guy it depends if a three or four put okay sorry yeah you’re not i think it goes to one over if I hold this I think let me double check we actually are keeping scorecards at the minute it helps the editing team with the edits so I look a bit nerdy but the reason why I’m currently even par well one over hopefully currently even par yes going to go one or two i’ll hold it shall I so just put me down for one over and then I’ll just hold it editors yeah I’ll hold it and this to be one over two this is to stay one over yeah oh wow didn’t mean to hit it that hard holy oh holy moly that is interesting like a blind man leading the blind today right one over one over two over interesting little bit with the maybe the best hole the best hole in the course in my opinion up next yeah the the little eye right par three is the 17th in the open which caused a lot of drama it’s the 15th in regulation play our but for this match it’s the sixth uh 6 7 8 9 yeah six how far have you got it James 134 so I’m another probably 10 or 12 yards further i can’t really see guys to yet i think I’m on the green putter whatever happens it has to be up up near the pin pin high or beyond is the only thing that’s acceptable on this hole okay 134 into the wind off the right i’m going to chip an eight wind yeah that’s beautiful that’s beautiful yeah good shot mate cheers right we’re going to walk up to my tea um it’s quite a decent advantage actually off this tea and guys another 10 yards further on than me so James was 130 and 112 oh you hit a lot of club then i’m going to try and hit a gap wedge about 125 oh thinned it i don’t think there’s a bunker there anymore is there i’m not sure no I think they took it out did they yeah okay well that is woeful okay so I’ve got 99 yards again like the guys playing a bit more because there’s so much wind so let’s just say 110 for round figures nice committed 3/4 50°ree really good lightful shot and that’s how you do it oh guys coming on with a charge here come on maybe this is a secret that why I’ve not been that good at golf play off the wrong TE’s maybe if I play off a really far forward TE’s I could compete so I thought I was really close i’m through the green my bag’s all the way over there i need my 58°ree wedge see you in a minute oh that was a dreadful pitch really bad come through the back of the green oh so close so close okay so mine actually ended up coming through the green as you can see which we didn’t think on the tea box looked awesome now there’s a little funny chip but I’m fancying it so nearly good that it was nearly good nearly horrendous we need something to happen here a little chip in damn oh had a lot lucky out for you James please mate yeah thank you okay so it’s enough build right to left here nice to try and make a birdie very happy with the T-shot great put yeah great oh yeah well done very nearly i’ve got this for a double up the hill left to right be momentum if we hold this oh that is a triple bogey six okay save the par yeah nicely done oh great save there mate neato in one of these matches so badly if Rick makes little mistakes like that I’ve got to capitalize on it okay nice par five big dog leg right round the corner 552 from here need to just fly it over that left bunker let it run good strike bit too left bit safe but not a bad miss on this hole left rough not bad three back that’s all I need to think three back three holes to play it’s very durable um I just need to get an unbelievable driver if we can just split over the corner we’re good yeah that’s really good mini driver off the deck controversially this might be my famous last words but there’s a theory behind the madness if I hit one well I’ll explain yeah keeps the spin of it i just feel like I’m going to hit it straighter i know it’s bizarre it’s cuz you strike off the deck i always hit it well do you want to know why go on cuz you strike it lower in the face it generates more backspin and more back spin it flies straighter there you go you’re in a good spot all I know is it went straight and I’m in the lead 229 out the roof down and off the left with the wind um I don’t think I need much club i’m going to hit a six iron see how that gets on let’s try and get one in close put some some pressure on guy miss it just right get lucky missed the bunkers no oh oh it was in one and then into another okay after a decent T-shot I’ve got 177 left in there’s lots of wind helping us so we know for a nice eight iron oh it’s a bit fad get up lovely green side bunker got 180 i’m going to hit eight iron downwind we need to be putting it it clears the bunker it’s on the green i’d like to have been a bit closer but I think we’re on the green slow no it’s ran on a bit almost decent probably a six out of 10 tricky bunker shot landing it onto a bit of a down slope so let’s try and hit the face wide open great shot roll out a bit more wow oh just I thought the down slope would really scoot it on yeah I did right we’re on the green we’re putting for eagle but I was hoping to be a bit closer either way let’s make something magic happen i’m still in this i’m one shot behind James and I’m two shots behind James three shots behind Guy so let’s hold this and then we’re good oh he’s not speed looks good put very good that’s outrage very good put all you can ask for after making a triple is to at least make a birdie definitely bounce back ability putting okay puts me back to three over ah hit it you big worm head uh P worm head good par no another fellow wormhead another worm head couple of worm heads worm just a petty worm you need to try more putters i need to try something else like fishing something else right score updates you’re one you’re one guy i’m one over par james I’m two overpower and I’m three oh feisty you are to play for three okay 17th 398 into the wind need to press here try and make a birdie a little bit further right than I wanted get left i feel like I need to birdie the last two to be with a shot this is again for the open this is normally the first hole um don’t really know off this tea where to hit it you’re absolutely fine but I think that’s perfect oh it’s B oh it looks like it’s near the green or something that was great nice yeah I think that’s really good very good okay so if I can hit one good drive here and then obviously play a decent hole that really going to set me up for a lovely 18 hole to potentially take the victory but this this shot has to go nicely thankfully there’s not too much trouble which is always a nice feeling on a tea for me oh buttoned it that’s the best shot I’ve ever seen you hit thank you mate yeah should be good nailed it yeah pretty good nice 130 yards out the rough not ideal could be worse just right of that flag knock down nine okay massive flyer can’t believe how far that’s gone wow okay 78.4 yards 58 degree let’s give it some oh it’s going a bit left oh that’s terrible is there a trap there oh that’s really bad though okay Shields good really good drive actually be I’m just in this rough i’m only 90 yards away we need to make birdie birdie to finish this so let’s put one close just a little bit into wind the lie is perfect couldn’t l anything more i’ve just got to strike a good golf shot get down what’s just happened not ideal that was a monster flyer that should not have uh been hitting a chippy one out the rough i try and put a bit of pressure on these boys little right to left and left to right down so fiery stop it if it’s so hard it’s got to be hit with pace up that hill i’m actually not too That’s not great but could have been worse up the hill then it’s going to swing quite a lot to the left i’m almost aiming at James’ ball here’s a man who knows how to put from off the green yeah i thought he was going to swing a bit more oh yeah still very good that this is where it all comes down to the the put off there’s going to be three par puts rick’s is the shortest mine’s middle james is longer i think one of these going to go in i don’t Can I read it for you i can’t read a book let me tell you let me tell you what I think let me read it for you that’s You’ve got way too straight what that line is near straight to the hole no it’s left of the hole i’ve got that on the on the just left of the left lip fraction just I’m reading it like that’s going to move i would aim this near your marker i’d aim that there i’m only half a cup out well if you’re happy missing by half a cup then fine whichever half a cup’s closer than I’ve been the last few that line now let me line it up well then this might is it you want this though advice James he’s not hold anything has he very true i think I’m going to hold this go on then well then do it if you miss this right you better pull it he actually turned in a bit the opposite way i just needed to give him that little bit of like motivation i actually think Did you move the line a little bit no didn’t touch the ball again all I did was pick the marker up i don’t know who ought to read mine for now that’s what it feels like to put like Rick watch i miss now to read it Paul i said I thought one was going in and one’s going in already so hopefully you can prove that theory wrong it’s always low it’s always low that turned a lot didn’t it so what you two over two over two over two over and this is to this is to stay at three how big are your minerals down the last boy absolutely non-existent i’m now questioning my own line now all right come on to stay in the hunt oh he’s in the hunt hunt is on the hunt is on just one i’m one back i’m three over the lads are two over last hole uh I think you’re going off there’s a T right about there actually James just behind that house it is there’s T in North Wales should have fade it or draw it around that house final hole in this epic challenge it’s been good really good it has i’m three over guys two over james is two over two over and it’s a 402 yard par4 for James i’ll probably be at probably 380 374 there you go and you’ll be about what 340 50 yeah 347 guess i’m going to try and hit driver on my green final words oh left he’s fine that mate he blocked out for the pin though he came before he conquered i tried to cut that kick left onto the flag it didn’t work right i think if I absolutely toned it on the right line I think we could get very close to the green here downwind 374 the place is baked out we just need to We need to go straight at the flag and get some really lucky hops and bounces that’s not bad right but it’ll be all right a bit right but that’s the miss on this hole oh yeah that’s the miss yeah I think I think that’s absolutely fine yeah it’s easy chip from there down the left power cut let’s do it a what a shot very good that is A1 what a guy from now on he only plays off front team but no actual tea can I tell you a secret i feel like I don’t like admitting this but every part of my being is saying I’m going to fat this into the bunker short but I can’t act on that i can’t let that get in my head i’ve got 70 yards left of the flag number one objective is carry that bunker and then just give myself apples doesn’t matter how long just apples rick’s in a decent spot james is not in a bad spot though he’s going to struggle to get any spin on his golf i can’t hit the green don’t think he can hit the green i don’t I don’t think I can hit the green rick’s in the best rick is in a good spot i need to just hit a 70 yard golf shot there’s a bit of wind it’s going to be difficult it’s going to want to run away from me but come on let’s do it get right oh it’s gone through we’ll have to seeing that guy can get spin from the fairway i’m pretty done here i think the best I can hope for is just trickle over the green but 67 yards going to try and hit it really high give myself half a chance that could do what I did oh for crying out loud what a shot spin it’s perfect we got the spin jeez spokey wedges how’s he done that that’s actually annoying i’m not even going to say good shot oh got the cheddar have you he done that he’s living in a hole that now isn’t he yeah oh my goodness right okay well there’s no guarantee it’s going to hold that if I chip this if I chip it in I’m doing really well if I get it up and down might be a playoff hit the pin oh it’s way too hard okay so it’s looking at James is 100% getting a par possibly a birdie good possibility of a birdie i have to hold this for a birdie in reality I’m just thinking this is such a hard golf shot on a really bur lie the only thing in my favor is the wind is into the face so if I get one up in the air which is a big if come on funk good effort mate ah I had no excuse i had all the room in the world oh nice lovely yeah good best you can do really from there right this has to go in to give James any pressure whatsoever pressures for tires mate well I know but hoping you’ll run flat oh my word my heart was in my mouth for about 5 seconds then it was a good effort good put that i’ll knock it in just to get my bogey no I won’t cuz I’m still playing second place here yeah it’s close it’s close no oh that’s pretty awful
