[Music] within only a matter of few weeks the landscape has changed green becomes shades of yellows and burns orange fallen leaves collect to form a blanket of frustration undeservedly lost golf balls determin and unjust punishment Autumn is the start of the end for many golfers it only gets worse from here on [Music] in but for now I will Embrace The Dewy grass the mud collected on my shoes my visible breath in the colder air woly hats thermals waterproofs and Sno nudes are all at the ready the hip flask is ready for what lies ahead winter is coming but it’s not here yet in fact it’s bloody lovely so stop whining and get on the first tea well the trip started early as most do with a stop off for coffee Starbucks is the goto now it’s at this point that you post a comment something like support the independence ignoring the fact I’m driving down the motorway or the highway as my American friend friends would say you see I’m multilingual [Music] dude but I need more than coffee next up is the golden arches for a breakfast fit for [Music] Kings so I’ve taken a short trip down to a little nine-hole Golf Course called Betsy covid it sits in a valley in snow Donia and it is quite literally one of my favorite places to visit so whilst I’m going to show you around this uh pretty little 90 golf course we’re also going to ask the question or answer the question that’s asked more than any other in recent weeks and that is short at driver Shaft or simply choke down o [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] I still can’t um well I refuse to accept that a shorter shaft isn’t an absolute result for most average golfers it’s just the control element it’s as simple as that you’ve got enough or little off so at this moment I’ve got 10 1/2 de Drive ahead on a 44in shaft and ACC combination of the two means the ball is traveling plenty far enough but I’ve got the control to set the ball up aim exactly where I want and feel like I understand where that club head is throughout the whole of the Swing so at this stage I’m just playing shorter shaft um Regular Drive ahead then I’m going to switch up and I’m going to play the longest shaft and just see longer shaft but then choke down and see if we achieve the same results the one word I always use uh when I come down here or Springs to mind at least and that’s idilic I don’t know whether that’s down to limited vocabulary or just uh pretty much how i’ always describe Betsy CED both the town and uh and the golf course because it’s just a it’s really pretty incredible backdrop and just a lovely place it’s my type of place nine holes love it it’s great to see a ball come down with those trees in the back drop as well I absolutely love that I had a great few comments on the video the other week where people complaining they could hear me breathing too loudly turnball so what I’m practicing doing is uh just stopping breathing when I’m recording any audio to camera going officially apologize right let’s move on to part two of the experiments so people keep asking in the comments whenever I do a um a video suggesting a shter shaft as the option is they say why not just choke down on a regular driver shaft and yeah in theory that seems perfectly plausible my own thought process is that it’s not something I particularly like to do in other words I don’t feel comfortable doing it that’s not to say that it’s not um perfectly normal for you to do and that’s exactly the same results so I’m going to try it swap into a full length shaft will choke down maybe an inch or two almost and just see if I get the same control element cuz for me this has got nothing to do with yardage it’s all about control and making sure we find Fairway so let’s see if that happens oh really control ball plight probably took 2 in off the shaft length and on the first shot quite impressed now one thing you’ve got to know about Wales at any time of the year is that the season can change pretty quickly we were looking at our absolutely stunning autal day and now it looks like rain it changes very very quickly that’s definitely driver the day and at the end of the day choking down is clearly something that um well it’s working it’s working really well it just further backs up that control element and I feel like Tommy Fleetwood with the swing at the moment he seems to choke down on virt every Club he plays but I love the control element that it’s given me and that one there just to be able to you know shape the shot as well it really does work opportunity down in the comment section two things really try and hit that like button if you have indeed like the video it’s something I never ask and it makes a massive difference to the performance of the video but secondly get involved in the comment section which is the element I love are you using a short of driver Shaft or are you indeed choking down and is it helping you anyway and would you advise your fellow golfers to try the same I’m convinced it’s the way forward for most of us [Music] yeah love it stood on here with the short shaft and uh we were filming into the sun this morning but pretty much hit and I identical shot same ball fight same sort of distance I think this experiment is over you can clearly play choking down on a driver shaft I think for me personally it takes a little bit of getting used to I’m not overly comfortable with it I would prefer to just have the regular shaft and sort of feel the but end of the club in where it’s supposed to be it does feel a little bit narrow down here grip wise but that’s just a personal preference and one thing was mentioned the tan mentioned off camera was that it’s certainly a way of um testing the water before you went into a shorter shaft seeing if the idea works for you and then maybe it’s something you would like to do but 100% it’s uh same results it does what it says on the tin it’s control so you may noticed bety code golf club is very quiet I think we’ve seen two people here since we’ve been here from early on this morning and it really is kind of almost like not that it’s my business but it worries me that little golf courses like this how do they survive you got green staff here who are keeping this place nice and tidy but uh I don’t know it must work but every time I come down here it just seems so so quiet which I love but you do worry for the golf course in the long term just overdid it just overdid it ah it’s probably worked but still ability to turn it over that’s the last Drive of the day because um I’m pretty much satisfied I did it a better drive on this hole but again that was down to my uh my own quality of Swing which has been okay this morning but maybe more importantly it’s just been a combination of ay this is by no means a scientific experiment it’s an opinion based on what has gone on this morning so take for me what you will um but yeah without doubt there’s some uh definitely some credibility in this idea of shen down choking down whatever you want to call it definitely age control every we’ve said it a million times before bety Co Golf Club lovely this morning little bit overcast as we finish the video we’re probably going to pop into town there’s a place that do some incredibly good pizzas and uh that’ll finish off our day and then a drive back home a little different episode this week hope you enjoyed it and no doubt next time I see you that woolly hat thermals waterproofs they’re not going to be too far away

  1. Thanks for the video. That sounds like a great day to me and the slower pace of the video, scenes and music were a pleasant switch. I’m looking at trying to grip down as my 45” PXG driver hasn’t given me the accuracy. My thought was to take a couple rubber bands and loop them around the grip at 1 or 1.5” in and experiment with gripping down because like you, I prefer to have the wider edge of the grip at the end of my left hand. I’ll experiment and see what optimal grip down is so if I cut down the shaft, I’m not just guessing at how much. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts on the subject.

  2. I really struggle with the driver and I've been thinking of its worth chocking down or getting my shaft shortened I'm a slicer so really not sure

  3. I am getting back into golf after about 30 years of not playing. I found your videos and love your demeanor. Your video suggesting to sacrifice distance for keeping balls in play has me using a 3 wood almost exclusively. Now with this one I will absolutely give the chocking down a try. Keep up the great content good sir.

  4. Cut down shafts really work, I’ve been doing it for the last ten or so years. Got sick of spraying balls around and having blowouts on otherwise good rounds (i.e. just a casual golfer & 88-92 is my target when I’m having a good day). Realised with a good grip, an easy 2/3 swing and 43.5” driver shaft I can reliably get 230/240 yards with a light fade.

  5. I experimented with gripping down 1" on my driver. I use a Mevo launch monitor at the driving range and record the swing data on a spreadsheet. Normal grip: 598 swings recorded. Averaged: 207.2 yards Carry – 224.3 yards Total – 90.2 MPH Club – 126.2 MPH Ball – 1.40 smash. ————– Gripping own 1": 436 swings recorded. Averaged: 211.8 yards Carry – 229.0 yards Total – 90.5 MPH Club – 128.0 MPH Ball – 1.41 smash. I'd say it works for me.

  6. Might have to pay that course a visit indeed it looks “idyllic” and not to far from me in Manchester.
I’m 5ft 6 and have a standard length ping g430 sft driver and choke down a good couple of inches and it works a treat, as I do with most clubs, just feel like I have more control, probably all in my head but it works for me.
    Great video 👍

  7. I’m currently using the PXG 0211 driver which came with a stock shorter shaft. Love it!
Never tried choking down on a standard size shaft.
    Hannah D on the photo!
    Nice work as always!

  8. I just want you to know that I have no problem with you breathing…you’re giving us great content at great locations and for those people who has complained about breathing, just get a life…keep up the great work…just saying…

  9. I don't know precisely what length driver I'm playing but I'm pretty sure it isn't 45.5". Probably somewhere around 44.75 and 45. My usual grip has me choking up about .25 inches so my playing length is probably 44.5. For me it's all about getting a center strike. Distance takes care of itself if I can make that happen.

  10. Im a 59 year old golfer and can still mostly keep up with a group of 30 somethings I've play with semi regularly. My driver shaft is 1" short and I'll grip down from there too. My younger friends used to give me a hard time about my gripped down old man "doinker" but now they all do it when there is trouble down the fairway

  11. Great video, lovely place and millionaires golf, you take us to some great sites, thanks for the journey, nice to see Hannah, best wishes from Tim in lanzarote, buena suerte y Que dios te bendiga

  12. Nice video Andy! Stunning course! I think I will give a choked driver a try! I don’t always hit driver great.

  13. I’m very intrigued by a shorter length shaft for my driver. I haven’t tried choking down, so maybe that’ll be my first (and cheaper) option. My drives have been inconsistent and I’ve resorted to using my 3-wood off the tee a lot this season.

  14. I was out on the range today. Worked through my irons and started having trouble with my 22 hybrid, moving to my driver was hitting poorly and remembered this video, choked down and hit my last 10+ drives solid. Thx!

  15. Yes, please don’t breathe anymore, you’re making too much noise trying to say alive😂

  16. I’m 5’7” so longer shafts can be a problem for me. I’ll take a shorter shaft. I’m buying some weather to prep for winter golf in Western Canada 🇨🇦
    Love your videos.

  17. I would definitely recommend chocking down on the driver shaft .Personally, I also choke down on all my clubs, excluding the putter. It gives me much more control of my shots.

  18. Anthony Kim always gripped down on his driver (and other clubs) the driver being the most noticeable. Club makers often offered to shorten the shaft and adjust the swing weight for him which he tried. He preferred gripping down on the club. He didn't seem to lose much distance.

  19. I’m in the states. Carolina’s to be exact. I’ve grown to luv your channel man. Losing balls in the fall on fairways under colored leaves is a thing. Ha. Luv your videos on equipment and ways to improve for older guys. I’m 56 and enjoy your content/opinions

  20. Ironically I just switched to a shorter shaft a few months back. Really changed my game. More often in the fairways than not now. I tried chocking down on the shaft and it just didn’t feel natural.

  21. I have been thinking about this for awhile now. My only concern is that if I cut down a stock shaft to 3wd length will the shaft be lighter and stiffer? Also how would that effect swing weight in the driver? Being a mid HC, would I even notice the difference in shaft weight and swing weight? I would also switch to mid size grip.

  22. I have been trying out "choke down method" for some time with good results. One of the observations you made about choking down is that you can get into a much smaller diameter area of the grip and shaft, which brings up another low cost – high results option by getting grips that match your hands better. Better grips provide much more confidence and operational comfort. — Everything works better ! Last year I put Oversize Lamkin Crosslines on most of the clubs in my bag and it is such a wonderful upgrade. I put a Golf Pride – Tour Wrap – Jumbo on my driver, which made it even better and it was already one of my favorite clubs. >>> However, there are advantages to having a driver shaft selected for the shorter 44 inch length for a "Fairway Finder Driver", so I decided to treat myself to a full-on experiment experience by purchasing a Tour Edge E522 from RBG for less than $ 100 and FREE Shipping. I came yesterday and I am really excited to try it out. Your insights and advice are greatly appreciated. I will let you know how things go after extensive testing and many fun golfing adventures. Thank you for the videos and terrific scenery!

  23. Who do we credit for your music and visuals. Your voice and narration is great but I’m just curious. Is it you or is it the person that filmed you? I just wanna make sure that if it is the person taking the pictures they get the credit because it’s really quite nice. And if it’s you kudos.

  24. I was fitted for a 44.5 Titleist driver with a 75 gram shaft and +4 weight to keep the swing weight correct it’s the most accurate driver I have ever hit only missed one fairway last time out and lost almost no distance not even a whole clubs worth sometimes hitting it further due to better contact

  25. Golf wth poetry and beautiful views thanks for sharing Andy, the videos for beginners and high handicaps is greatly appreciated. The best golf channel there is by a long way. Hope your enjoying your golf mate
