today we are on the range at TPC River Highlands presented by Reliquest and we are glad to have you along with us here the final signature event of this season all seven previous winners are here for the eighth of eight and it is the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands just a little south of Hartford Connecticut down here in the wonderful little village of Cromwell overcast skies temperatures are going to be warm by the time we get finished with the week but the players will take it right now because it’s not raining 72 players in this field for this signature event and they’re all getting themselves ready here for the test at TPC River Highlands and we’re glad to have you with us here inside our PGA Tour studios pga Tour veterans Carl Pollson and Richard Lee with us gentlemen we just came through carl I know you’re up there a very intense week at the US Open where scoring was at a premium and here we go we got scoring at a whole different pace in Hartford it’s definitely at a different pace but this is a a short golf course in comparison to the other golf courses on the PGA Tour but it has really stood the test of time uh a lot of rough on this golf course small greens with a lot of movement um so this is one of my favorite courses on tour so I’m anxious to see how the scoring is going to be this week richard hitting the fairway last week was paramount just to survive hitting the fairway here this week very important to score how do the players deal with the balance it is important Brian and it’s less intimidating i mean US Open was just a brutal test for everybody but Cromwell here at TBC River Highlands if you miss the fairway you still have some chances i mean there are a few holes where you must hit the fairway but you can get away with it a little bit here and we’ve got ourselves here on a Wednesday on the range we’ve got a proam going on guys right now uh folks out on the driving range so we’re going to take you through a little bit of what goes on behind the scenes on a Wednesday out on the PGA Tour uh Colin Swatton is out on the golf course out on the range with us there so he’ll be doing some interviews as we go on we’ll take down take a look at some swings and break down some of these swings from the best players in the world all 10 of the top 10 in the world are here all 10 of the FedEx Cup standings as well there’s Justin Thomas who is trying to watch us on the app carl there he is got a couple of shafts there in under his arm but just getting ready to get warmed up got to get the last second text messages and emails out of the way we mentioned there is a proam going on nine holes for these guys and if you’re one of the M’s you’re going to play with one pro for nine holes and another pro for for nine holes very good experience out there not right now [Music] and whatever Justin’s doing it’s not working just yet but he’ll get it all figured out and what is Seb Straka doing over here he’s got that alignment stick under his right armpit it’s just a connection thing keep that upper right arm connected to the right side of the body groups of two for the first two rounds here the Travelers Championship you see SE playing with Aaron Ry both of them PGA Tour winners now sep already a winner this season great golf swing just zero wasted motion in this golf swing he and John Tiller have done a great job the last couple of years richard this this looks a little dangerous for uh the nonpros it might be a little dangerous for you Brian for sure um but no it’s a great drill just to kind of like Carl talked about feeling the connection making sure his big muscles do the takeaway and kind of set the club and this is little drills that players do all the time the beginning of the week is a great opportunity to kind of set the right tone for the week and um just having the consistent warm up I think is so important for these players uh it’s and he can take that right into the warm-up as he’s takes the lineman stick off and uh it’s a great drill and obviously it works out look at his stats right here third and approach the green strokes gain so it’s working and we’ve seen a lot of players in the past Brian take a glove or something and put it under their left armpit to keep the connection that’s more for impact and through the right is more for the back swing to stay a little bit tighter keeping the right arm a little bit closer to the body and rounding out your swing se is a guy that likes to move the ball from right to left so that fits right in nicely with what he’s trying to do on the golf course had the 54 hole lead at the American Express earlier this season he was on a little different rotation than everybody else and maintained that lead didn’t make a bogey on Sunday until the par five 16th and by then the tournament was under his control mentioned that the previous seven signature event winners are all here in this field this season including this man Justin Thomas who won the RBC Heritage at Harbortown justin has been very interesting this year his good golf has been fantastic his bad golf has been bad i mean he has shot a lot of 78s and 76s and uh as a professional you want your floor and your ceiling to move together right you the better you get you want that floor to rise up with you and uh like a Scotty Sheffler type of player but Justin’s good golf has been fantastic this year but he’s had some stretches that have been less than stellar well you had the old adage Richard that you made 90% of your money and points in 10% of your starts and that is definitely the case with Justin Thomas it definitely is and Carl does bring a good point but you know I look at it though if you get a win out on on tour which he has at RBC Heritage and in a dramatic fashion I think that’s uh in a positive direction and he’s here’s a guy who I feel like can break out any moment i mean Justin Thomas is Justin Thomas he has a history of winning big events and uh you know I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s contending this week or next week uh he’s just one he has so much talent and uh I love the way he works at his game as well i think this is actually a really good golf course for Justin Thomas just JT likes to move the ball with what the golf course is asking for if it’s asking for a fade he’ll fade it if it’s asking for a draw he’ll draw it a lot of players are one-dimensional out on tour right now which is totally fine uh we’ve seen a lot of guys play very well just basically hitting one shot shape but JT likes to move the ball both ways and this is this golf course has got a little old soul to it move on over here check back in with Seb Straa he’s made it up to the driver i love how rotary his swing is it’s very together se is a big guy um but he’s not the longest hitter on tour but he stays with him himself and uh just watch how he kind of rotates through this shot his arms are very connected to his body he wins and his legs are pretty calm compared to the modernday bombers you see a lot of guys jumping out of the ground um but Se is much more grounded than other players carl we were talking about that shaft that is the middle launching version of that shaft they’ve got one that goes lower and you wouldn’t imagine SEP wanting one higher but we saw both of those swings were 13° launch angles that’s exactly what these guys are looking for yeah he’s dialed in with his numbers there’s no question about that but he just is about 3 m an hour shy in swing speed of moving up to that next flex you know the the kick point in the shaft goes up and up as those uh you know you you talk about the high launch the midlaunch and the low launch he just needs about three more miles an hour for that low launch so he’s in the right shaft and you know as Richard said he’s not one of the longer hitters on tour but he hits it plenty long enough and it’s good to see longtime Caddyy veteran Caddy out here Dwayne Bach who’s missed a couple of starts back out here se had his twin brother Sam on the bag the last few was supposed to work one of the days of the PGA Championship but Dwayne was hurt was hurt and couldn’t go so Sam was on the bag for a couple of full starts in a row die was a heck of a player himself back in the day played at Campbell University sepraco one of the stars in this field we are already getting toward the tail end of this season 28th of 36 FedEx Cup events luke Clanton was a star in the early part of the season he’s now a PGA Tour member we’ll take a look at him when we come back [Music] and we welcome you back on the range here at the Travelers Championship TPC River Highlands the eighth of eight signature events we just saw Seb Straa hitting some golf shots colin Swatton is down on the range and he’s standing by with Seap well I’m here with a man is currently third in current FedEx Stop standings already a two-time winner on the PGA Tour seap Straka zep we saw you on the range a little bit earlier with this stick in your arms in some sort of configuration and I know a lot of the the viewers watching this show today would be interested in what you’re working on and why you’re working on and whether it was the brain the brainchild of your longtime coach John Tiller yeah definitely definitely a tillerary thing um yeah no I do it in my warm-up every day i just kind of put it under my right right armpit um it helps me stay connected and just kind of have a one piece takeaway basically fights my tendency of being lazy and just kind of picking it up a little bit and then from there I usually have to slide out in front of it and kind of throw it at the bottom to square up the face and it really helps me at the bottom too to just kind of have that that uh I guess uh one motion through the ball instead of kind of getting out in front of and flipping it so much of it is sequencing in the golf swing and also too taking cues and and visuals and feels and things like that and that’s a beauty there from John it’s been a minute since you’ve been here i believe 2019 was the last time you were here is that right no no i play this one every Oh every year what what uh what do you need to do this week maybe a little bit differently knowing that the weather’s going to be a bit chop and change as it was last week at the US Open uh yeah um you know this golf course is one of those where uh you know you can get away with missing some fairways but it’s got to be on the right holes and if you’re missing fairways you’re probably not making birdies and uh it’s one of those where you kind of put a little more offense definitely than last week and uh yeah when you’re in the fairway I mean these greens are kind of small and a little tricky so uh it’s nice to be in the fairway to kind of try to take advantage of some iron play well I saw you finishing off there with a nice little session on the performance using Trackman as always seucker good luck for the week and thank you for your time thank you appreciate it we mentioned that all seven previous signature event winners this season are in this field there’s Seep winning the truest championship his second win of the season pedi Matsyama got things kicked off rory Mroy called it a cathedral of golf when he won at Pebble Beach woodg making a statement at Riviera russell Henley defying even his own expectations at Bay Hill justin Thomas in that playoff at the RBC Heritage and of course Scotty Sheffller at the memorial who’s going to do it this week seven different winners in seven seven different events luke Clamp started the season as a college player became the second player to earn PGA Tour membership through PGA Tour U this season made his professional debut at the RBC Canadian Open i think it’s safe to say here Carl that uh his world is spinning pretty fast right now it’s uh going a million miles an hour i think this is his safe space so to speak right you get on the golf course and you do what you do best and you don’t worry about all of the other stuff that’s going on around you that’s why you you hire the teams that you hire well I want to be and you get out on the golf course and do your thing i think this guy’s going to be a superstar when it’s all said and done he’s got it and and he has got a fantastic attitude talked to Trey Jones his college coach at FSU and Trey said that he is one of the most positive people that he’s ever met never complains about traffic or food or any of the things that he can’t control he just is a guy that’s always looking at everything from a positive standpoint and that with the talent that he has is a good recipe to be a superstar in this game at some point Richard he gets to just calm down and focus on the game absolutely i mean he made his professional debut uh in Canada a couple weeks ago and I know he didn’t play the weekend but we know how much game he has um but this is a great opportunity with a great feel there is no cut this week so he’s going to play all four rounds with the best players in the world but I think he’s here to stay and he’s a future superstar for sure let’s not forget too these tournaments that he’s playing from here on out for the rest of the year are sort of just like a bonus his actual year that he gets on tour is is 2026 so if he can do something from here through the playoffs and sneak his way into the playoffs he can better his position as he moves forward that is a great clarification he was one of the sponsor exemptions here this week into this field and a pretty good one remember it wasn’t too many years ago that they gave Patrick Kentlay a sponsored exemption here and he shot 60 as an amateur that was back in 2011 well the man we have down on the range there is uh Colin Swatton who knows what he’s looking at colin take it away well I am here with young superstar Luke Clanton and his entire team here we’ve got Jason Wle his caddy and also two longtime swing instructor and good friend of mine Jeff Leechman he’s the brains behind the operation uh Jeff just talk to us as we uh we watch you know Luke go through his practice session here what kind of things are you working on if any obviously first start was the RBC Canadian Open as a professional uh there’s an interesting story too with regards to his spot in the US Open and then giving that spot up to turn pro at the Canadian Open can you just talk to us a little bit about that also well it involves making a choice to uh turn professional and attempt to qualify for the US Open the same week as the Canadian Open and despite that not going well there still was a lot of experience gained playing with Rory Maroy during the Canadian Open and continuing essentially what he um started last year in professional golf as an amateur but then also doing the college thing uh right up to attempting to win the national championship we were talking about a little bit off camera just a moment ago you were sort of you know talking about the similarities of obviously what I did with regards to Jason Day taking him sort of as an you know as a young guy out onto the tour at 2018 luke’s 21 you know and then sort of just being that calming influence that quiet voice that that helping hand and supporting person there’s so much that goes into what I class as coaching not just instruction that sometimes is seems unvalued well sometimes it’s referred to the difference between the EQ part and the IQ part and I would say that the main thing now is we’re just trying to keep some continuity and some sameness in what’s been already happening for the better part of a year and keeping momentum going essentially and um so I’m today what we’re doing is much like what we’ve done often when he’s just hitting some stock wedges and getting ready to compete i got to just for a second talk about Jason Wle here jason this is an interesting story school teacher gave up teaching come on the bag work for Luke sounds a little Michael Greller Jordan Spe whom you’re playing with this week I believe what is it what’s it like to to be playing with the likes of a Rory Maroy one week Ludvig Aberg and then now sort of Jordan Spith just talk to us about that real quick well I think it’s pretty obvious it’s pretty cool to be honest with you um I’ve watched Jordan Spingrowing up and I watched Roy growing up so I’m excited to kind of play with them both it’s going to be cool we won’t take too much of your time i just wanted to come over say hi you’ve got a great team of people around you great team of Caddy coach and you’re you’re destined for stardom so thanks again appreciate your time as always and play well colin well done remember part of Colin Swaten story he he is familiar with what he’s looking at here uh had uh Jason Day and his caddyy Luke Rearen back at his academy in Australia at a young age back when they were teenagers been coaching Jason for a long time watching him develop took him all the way up to number one in the world and here’s another guy with that sort of potential it certainly feels like it’s the start of a Jason Dayesque career there’s no question about that the fact that he while he was still in college was able to get into contention on PGA Tour events and at one point last year half of the tournaments that he played in on the PGA Tour he’d finished in the top 10 and he’s still trying to win a national championship with his college team so it’s obvious that Richard that the players have gotten a lot better a lot faster 100% i mean the PGA2 youth program and the young guns are ready to compete right away and he is definitely a poster child for what could happen for all the young guns we appreciate the time from Luke Clinton and his team they’ve coordinated the shoe order for the day at that point it’s all downhill from there you’re good as we continue we’ll take a look at some of the other big stars in the field here at the Travelers Championship tommy Fleetwood getting himself ready for a big week out here on the PGA Tour [Music] welcome back to On the Range live at TPC River Highlands presented by Reliquest along with Richard Lee Carl Pollson and Colin Swatton i’m Brian Katrick we’re glad to have you with us here Wednesday of the final signature event of the season the Travelers Championship we’re about a 100 miles north of the Empire State Building and these guys can do some sightseeing we’re right on the shores of the Connecticut River and there’s Tommy Fleetwood who has been all over the world he has been there and done that and continuing to knock on the door here for a win on this tour he’s going to play with Tom Hogi for the first two rounds there are going to be a lot of very nice iron shots hit in that group too of the best to do it from the fairway oh he has set up some goalposts here i like this well hopefully those are his those are some pretty small margins right there Richard it is i mean he’s working on his visuals here but that is a I mean Tommy is known to do some scary drills i know he has the swing plane that he uses sometimes he puts like a yoga block on the right side of the ball sometimes and now he’s hitting it through this little alignment stick strictly probably working on his visuals because as a player when you’re over the ball versus when you’re behind the ball you you can see some different things so good way to kind of train your eyes to kind of see down the line and Tommy loves to kind of hit these little tight little draws so hey whatever works and whatever helps your game well we wish Tommy all the best but I kind of want to see one dink off of one of these sticks i was just thinking does it shatter the stick in half if he if he hits a one gotta know what happens next [Music] tommy’s a guy that’s always choked down on the club a little bit that’s probably a hand size issue i was the same way uh when I was playing professionally it was we didn’t have all the options and grips a 100 years ago when I played so it my hands just felt more comfortable around the grip a little bit further down but Tommy’s always choked down on that grip a little bit he just Yeah he’s lighting it up is that any good field goal that is a that’s a heck of a heck of a drill to do on the range i’m not sure that’s one you should try at home here’s a little different look we’ve slid a little over to the right here now we’ve changed to the the fairway wood one thing I admire about these professionals are that discipline that they have week in week out they work on the same drills they just know they understand their games and know what’s going to bring the best out of them especially on a Wednesday now leading up to tomorrow’s first round these players are always what do I have to do to get myself ready on round one so I think it’s the discipline is what I’m impressed about the most i think it’s ironic that all of those things that they work on week in and week out are called fundamentals because they’re not fun at all but they are they’re tedious things that you have to do each and every week to make sure that you are in the same positions uh with your stance alignment grip posture all of those things well there’s some of the posture this doesn’t look particularly safe either tommy trying to stay more level through the hit he has a tendency to kind of dip down but that’s another drill to just kind of stay tall through the shot can also keep that chin just high enough for the left shoulder to clear underneath if you don’t your head will turn just a little bit and that’ll change your eye level for people to think about i wonder if they have a code word for this tommy’s got to win soon out here on the PJ tour he’s too good of a player well that right there was uh was a little different tommy Fleetwood showing us something a little different than your normal range session and Minwe speaking of different Uh Richard he’s got his legs tied together yeah it’s not something you see every day um but he’s clearly working on some sort of a ground reaction or he’s trying to feel something in the legs or there’s separation between the right and the left knee but this is a very interesting look he clearly tied those those bands together this morning this is not a planned thing i don’t even know what I’m doing but it looks good says “I don’t even know what I’m doing.” Talk about it you sure all right so there’s a loop through so the black rope has a loop in it he’s got one leg through each of the loops all right i’m getting off at 10 so I’ll be before and then the yellow rope is tied to the back of the black rope [Laughter] somebody’s have to going to have to come over here and untie Minu Lee so he can make his proam time for sure this is pretty pretty fun this is kind of like you you’re looking at the inside of a hood of a golfer whatever it takes to make you feel like you you can hit the ball better or feel a better movement guys are going to do whatever it takes i think the interesting thing too is if Minw is feeling something in his left knee if he’s trying to get some separation between his knees in the down swing whatever it is he clearly is not sure yet because he just told us he’s not real sure what he’s doing uh but you can have a drill or something that you do that works for you because all you’re trying to do is get some type of feel doesn’t really have to do it but you you’re just kind of tricking yourself sometimes into okay this is this is what I want to feel through impact it might work for Minu Lee and not for any of the other 71 players playing in the field bo Martin got to clean the club you’re going to have to go to him because Minu can’t really move [Music] you see a winner this season scotty Sheffller was in that field that was a feel-good win for Minu Lee i love how deliberate he is as well as he’s doing this drill he’s clearly trying to feel where the pressure is going to the right and when is it moving back to the left and it’s kind of being an athlete too trying to feel like Carl just said you as a player you want to feel something especially on a Wednesday you want to feel a swing thought or a feel that you can take on the golf course and then when that starting gun goes off you forget about all of that and you go out there and you try to be an athlete and you try to react to what’s in front of you you know you you do these drills you do them over and over and over and over and then it takes time for it to make its way to the golf course and when those feelings that you do each and every day on the practice team finally make their way to the golf course that’s when these guys win tournaments yeah i always look at it like you’re putting deposit in the bank Carl it’s like daily deposits it’ll add up and all pay off at the end is hitting his targets out there this is what it looks like when these guys are putting in the work early in the week midwe willing to go to some extremes here whether he knows what he’s doing or not it seems to be working well if he wins this week I guarantee there’ll be more guys using that thing so this is going to become all the rage when we come back we will check in with Tony Fee now we know how low he can go at a place where you got to go low to win this Traveler Championship [Music] we welcome you back here on the range tpc River Highlands Travelers Championship starting tomorrow and it’s time now for a closer look at the fourth hole at TPC River Highlands presented by Reliquest the right approach leads to improved outcomes so it is a long par4 slight dog leg right got to fit it in there in between those fairway bunkers and if you don’t well you’re over par middle of the fairway they’re underpar every hole here at TPC River Highland seemingly a birdie hole unless you’re out of position and then uh we’ll take a closer look here at the green carl what jumps out at you well it’s just such an awkward fairway to hit once you do hit the fairway obviously you can see the red arrows you got to fall off on the right left and front of the green it’s a little bit of an upside down serial bull but if you do get the ball in the fairway these guys will be hitting seven eight and nine irons into this green and that’s why it’s under pars almost every hole out here uh at TPC River Highlands it’s very important to hit the fairways four and a half from that left front greenside bunker you’re going to want to avoid that and some a deeper look at the numbers this is usually one of the toughest holes on the golf course fairway and a green at the fourth won’t do you any harm and here’s Tony Fee now over here on the far left side of the range this is one of the older clubs in the field by the way this is that old three iron that he’s had in the bag for quite some time we’re really going to start with this got to be his favorite club in the bag right okay it probably hasn’t started it’s probably started already but love to see this old club [Music] that club for Tony Fee now is about where all three of us max out with uh with the longest club in our bag so we could learn a lot by watching these ball flights it’s that old Nike threeiron oh he put in all those years ago to fill a gap guys coming he said uh you guys can when he gets here just run you can just just run to the car and grab your clothes there you go coordinating some of the program partners caddy yeah yeah you going to That’s who you want caddy right yeah just have um Yeah you guys good play that’s his son i don’t know who your pro is but should be fun oh he’s playing he’s going to be playing as one of the AMS love it exactly that’s a fun experience don’t beat him too bad though like the guys are very delicate like that when the games beat him you know i know he’s gonna hang with that keep your keep your score when you when you make a birdie and doesn’t make sure you take Oh yeah great advice he just welcomed another child back in the fall the phenile clan growing how about his son playing in the pro and playing with different pros right it’s a really cool experience though it’s like I’ve played enough with you Dad i don’t want to play with you when you beat him on a hole it just makes your mind hey sorry what did you get on that [Laughter] that’s great can you do they hit a bunch of balls did you hit a bunch of balls i hit a few extra shots hit some chips hit some Well we’re just couple days removed from Father’s Day and this is a great father-son moment here on the range it’s got to be a proud moment for Tony and having his son out here and playing in the field in the prom with another pro great experience like that’s a left left flag yeah this guy generates a ton of power with just a short swing [Applause] see where that that old three iron was going see where this one goes yeah a little bit farther there’s the next club out 278 carry carl I think the guys bet on airplanes didn’t go that far oh I was Yeah that three iron is the the next club in the bag so I guess he’s got at least one more goes farther than that [Music] i got to ask him what I think he is the the main guy at Capital Grill yeah carter carter yeah do you remember him yeah he’s coming down and he’s just he’ll just tell you guys kind of what to do so but I think you guys basically like grab your bag and you guys come down and start practicing yeah is that the amateur thing over there yeah I think you got hit on the amateur side but baseball season this year so far i’m sorry what about baseball so far this year oldest son asking for all kinds of advice here tony’s telling him how it’s going to work i think they’re both excited about this afternoon of the ProAm wouldn’t be surprised if Tony went out and washed a little bit love how it just rips through that ball very free 288 carry i don’t do you remember like the preseason stuff that they they dealt with with it our tracer technology is presented by Trackman whole lot of fun to watch there with all of these guys colin Swatton has sauntered on over and caught up with Minu Lee men five top 10s in a win already on the season for you um a good season saw you working a little bit earlier on things with your golf game coach Richie Smith back in Australia no doubt he would have been out for the big one last week at the US Open what’s he got you working on yeah uh you know it’s been a really good year um bit disappointing in the signature event so obviously they’re really tough courses and that’s where we want to be and uh play better in those courses so uh just trying to get a bit more consistent and better and uh yeah just you saw there uh me strapping up my legs um just a bit more structure throughout the legs uh I think Richie you know saw last week um uh yeah it was just uh pretty much just explaining it like black band that goes around my knee uh or sorry around my ankles and a yellow one that is on top of my left uh so pretty much I I guess I sway to the right so I don’t have enough structure in my left leg so um I just that yellow band is just to remind me just to keep my left leg outwards it feels like instead of go in because if the left leg goes in then the right leg goes out which is uh not normal and uh you know I I generate a lot of speed and I just want to get a bit more um bit more control over the ball and uh yeah that’s what uh my coach Richie has uh given me to given me to do so uh he’s with my sister in uh at the major now so um she’s a bit more important than me right now so uh I just got some homework to do and yeah okay well we we all know the golf swing starts from the ground up good stable bases all about what we have to do you’re known as a bomber but you finished your session went back over here you put your Trackman down and you started dialing in some numbers a little bit shorter golf course this week we’re in for a little bit of range softer conditions it’s all about spin control is that something that you were looking for in that session yeah of course um you know just just to do uh wedges and numbers uh I think that’s quite a key factor uh you know out on tour um yes bombing it helps but uh especially when you get on the course like last week and uh when the rough is thick you need to you need to keep it somewhat straight so um yeah had a had a tough Thursday was like nearly last in straight ske and then the next day I was you know top five so you know I can I guess I just you know um it’s nice to find a positive out of that and uh yeah I mean last week was brutal uh this week’s I think a little bit better um it’s nice to see the ball in the rough and you get you get to you know hit it onto the green so uh again you need a lot of control but um yeah the wedges are important out here awesome well as always thanks for your time and we wish you the best this week cheers thanks Colin pretty good explanation there from Minw Lee signature event gets all the big names there is number one in FedEx Cup points to number one in the world and there’s number two Rory Mroy here also we welcome you back here on the range at the Travelers Championship this is the 28th event of the season we’ve had 27 winners so far this season here are the last five scotty Sheffller with a major championship ben Griffin Sheffller again Ryan Fox at the RBC Canadian Open two wins this season for Ryan Fox and then JJ Spawn lost in a playoff at the Players Championship to Rory Mroy and the the big clincher the 65footer to win the US Open just a couple days ago here is a look at the move from JJ Spawn as we take a look most of the players on tour there’ll be two things that you’ll see at address and that is a straight left shoulder to the club face and a steady head as we start this golf swing I’m going to keep this excuse me going to keep this circle on his head a steady head throughout this golf swing this is a very traditional golf swing he gets into his right side there you can see the left knee moving a little bit towards his right leg and that head has not moved at all almost exactly parallel at the top and now from here you’ll see these these hips really work around to the left and then when we get down to impact almost every player on the PGA Tour again will have that straight line down to the ball from the left shoulder that is absolutely ideal head has stayed down longer than a lot of players do but look at the extension of the right arm through impact and into that follow swing which pulls him over to his left side very classic golf swing so that was last week’s winner the week before that a different nation’s open the winner of the RBC Canadian Open this is Ryan Fox one of the more unique swings i’m going to highlight his grip here and his head let’s take him back to the top very strong grip just keep an eye on that because that’s the cause to a lot of the movement that he does he’s going to take him to the back and then we’ll wide extension and we’ll keep on pause so he does get off the ball a little bit but look at his side bend on the the how his upper body has moved this direction and now I’m going to clear some of these out so you can really see now we’ll kind of take him down on the down swing and just look at this side crunch on the right side that he has and all that lag but this look is very unusual we’ll pause him right here look at this movement this way that’s actually due to his strong grip this is his way of kind of launching the ball up in the air yes this will probably hurt his back in the long run uh but this is a swing that he’s made from the ground up in his homemade swing but it clearly works so there many ways to do it but uh very unique golf swing that guy’s won twice this season i like that anytime you see a guy with a grip that strong that moves the ball from left to right run he is going to take all of your money that’s a good point Carl all right we got snack time out there tom Kim chatting it up with Ludvig Oberg [Applause] this is uh this is Dunkin Donuts territory by the way up here in Hartford not sure i’m just making an educated guess on what that may be it’s probably healthier than that and Ludvig I I guess texting Justin Thomas don’t not really sure i’m guessing whatever Tom Kim is eating Lud big does not well a winner earlier this season signature event winner and not sure that we’ve gotten yet to Ludvig fulfilling all the potential there’s so many expectations he’s already made a RDER Cup team he’s now won multiple times and it still seems like we’ve got a lot more to go well there’s no doubt he’s shown us glimpses of what we can expect from him in the near future it’s now becoming a little bit more consistently being in the top five in the top 10 when he’s playing his great golf he is deadly it’s when he’s not when he’s got his B minus and C++ game he’s just not quite there with the likes of Aori or a Scotty yet but when he’s got his A game it’s awfully good 10th ranked player in the world Richard in this there’s just not going to be anything wrong with any of these swings uh he’s a player that I always said he’s kind of built in the lab he’s got the frame he’s got the speed he’s got the demeanor good putter um yeah like Carl said I mean I think he he definitely has had an up and down season um but he is an impressive player to watch and definitely one of the best and will be one of the best for a long time [Music] what do we think they’re looking at there got the Trackman interface for the phone he might have taken a video just to check out a couple of positions or like you said it might be Oh no they’re definitely looking at a video so unique for all these players they have a certain feel they’re working on compared to a position and it may feel like you’re doing something that’s miles apart it may move a millimeter in the video but that’s all the players are looking for a certain feel for a position the only thing is don’t get that [Music] olympic is one of the players where I always look at his swing he does have a little bit of face movement at his speed that’s what it kind of hurts him in his consistency so what he’s working on is he’s trying to strengthen that club face on the way down which promotes better body rotation which slows down the club face rotation which kind of prevents more of what I call face stability through the hit so you can see him kind of working on that but that’s why he’s kind of like when he’s hot he’s hot and when he’s off he’s a little bit off compared to like a Scotty Sheffler whose face movement is very calm through the hitting zone which brings so much more consistency take a Colin Morawa who does the same thing very quiet club face so it’s it’s something that a lot of these players strive for and especially when you have that much speed like Levik that could kind of throw off his control shot 74 in the first round of the Genesis Invitational was at Tory Pines you remember that’s the highest start by anyone this season that has won a golf tournament battled back at a rough weather week a tough golf course rory Mroy what a season he’s had players champion Masters champion we’ll take a look at Rory when we come back on the range [Music] welcome back on the range here from TPC River Highlands travelers Championship starting off with a bang here are some of the big groups that we have starting very early tomorrow morning jason Day and Max Homa 910 and Lud Big Oberg and Sam Burns rory Mroy who just automatically qualified for the European Rder Cup team got that done with his performance last week so he’s made that team on points he’ll be playing with the United States Rder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and here is Rory number two in FedEx Cup points and number two in the world here on the range pretty nice track record here of course he would love to add a title to that his win at the players championship which of course stretched to Monday in that playoff over JJ Spawn that was the largest come from behind victory this season so far both he and Joe Heismith were four shots off the lead when they won their respective events now this is the exact reason why Rory Moy has played so well over the last few years i mean he always plays well but he’s really tightened up this wedge game he’s really worked on watching that ball get up to the apex of its flight and fall to the right instead of hitting that draw with the with the wedges and it’s tightened up his wedge game so nicely brought the trajectory down a little bit he’s not trying to hit it as hard with his wedges he talks about that 3/4 3/4 shot that he’s hitting three/4er swing with a threequarter pace that brings the trajectory down and that’s how you judge distance with your wedges with how high or low you’re hitting it and he has been fantastic with with his shorter clubs rory’s also talked about switching to a softer ball which led to all those things for Carl with hitting learning to take the spin down those three/4er wedges and how that bled into his irons and how that bled into the control of the longer clubs as well so I think biggest thing for Rory though is where is head at where is his head at this week you know he’s talked about it openly about his lack of motivation right now and after achieving probably one of the greatest feats in golf the career grand slam um I’m generally genuinely curious on what type of Rory is going to show up this week um and uh and every week moving forward like what’s going to motivate him to get that fire back it’s a great question he has circled the Open Championship at Royal Port Rush back in his home country in Northern Ireland his social media post earlier in the week I believe it was yesterday with some wonderful scenics from over there and you remember Carl the last time we were there just six years ago he made a big number on the first hole of the week and wound up missing the cut was was never in it from the get-go and you know he’d love to improve on that yeah it was an eight or a nine that he made on the first hole and he worked his tail off for the next uh you know day and seven eighth let’s say trying to make that cut if he had a couple more holes I think he would have made the cut uh but he had the you know entire you know Ireland and Northern Ireland and everybody else over there in Europe pulling for him to make that cut i was sorely disappointed that he didn’t make the weekend but I I think it was one of the biggest stories in golf for somebody that missed the cut in 2019 no doubt about it i know he wants revenge at Royal Port Rush and I think that I don’t know if it’s this week we might be a little bit too far out but in the next week or two he’s going to get very serious about ramping up his game for Port Rush perhaps that’s all the motivation he’s going to need there Richard absolutely mentioned number two behind Sheffller in points he’s number two behind Sheffller in the world he’s tied with Scotty Sheffller for most wins this season they both have three three big ones for Mroy one of the signature events there at Pebble Beach the Players Championship and then of course the Masters and yet he is more than a win behind Scotty Sheffller this is your top 10 in FedEx Cup points we have seen Sep Straka already today we’ve seen Justin Thomas took a close look at JJ Spawn’s swing ben Griffin has won twice including a team event with Andrew Novak and then winning on his own there in Fort Worth and Ben Griffin is out here on the range well Ben I’ve been standing here for a little bit watching you and that one was pretty straight it was one of your straightest so far this morning in your range session that was nice ben thanks for the time as always during your uh your warm-up practice session here already a twotime winner on the PGA Championship you teamed up with Andrew Novak at the Zurich Classic followed it up at the Charles Schwab i got the chance to follow you when you finished second at the Memorial and then coming off a top 10 finish at the US Open what is in the water for Ben Griffin yeah I don’t know i’m still sleeping on the same side of the bed every week um waking up feeling good i just trying to keep keep doing the same things um yeah it’s been a it’s been a nice run um feeling good about my game and just trying to stay sharp and and kind of stick to the same processes when I was watching you at at Memorial the thing that I was impressed with the most was you’re sneaky long a lot of guys probably don’t attribute that but also too you were 130th in driving last year this year you’re 40th anything you can attribute that to yeah just uh working on a lot of good things with my coach um we kind of focused in on that at the end of last year trying to make sure um you know from a driver setup pos um setup standpoint with equipment and everything i felt really good i I’m big on the look of the the driver when I put it down so I want something that I feel like looks really square and um just made the right right tweaks on on the equipment side and then from a from a physical side just um doing the right things with my coach and then from a distance side um yeah just working hard with my trainer trying to get stronger every day and um yeah take advantage of the link because it’s so important out here on tour see guys like Rory and um you know even look at last week or going back to the PGA Championship maybe like Dashambo just taking out bunkers and so um trying to get longer and uh make golf a little bit easier that’s what it’s all about making golf easier ben as always great luck good luck this week and thanks for your time thank you all right so we want to be clear ben Griffin purposely topped that last swing before Collins stepped in and that might be the highest degree of difficulty shot he’s hit all day yeah that’s really hard to do see that one went a lot farther that’s a skill to top a ball on purpose i don’t blame him by the way having to make one more swing with that club like that’s it he waited the whole interview just make one more swing with that club sure we can’t go out with the topped one do you want to even if it was on purpose it was pretty good right best shot of the warm-up session ben’s a perfect example of a guy playing with confidence i mean he’s no different than he’s been his whole career and his abilities uh on the golf course it is all confidence that he’s riding right now and it’s been a lot of fun to watch that self-belief has gone off i mean it’s impressive that what he has done Carl i mean to win and almost win again at Memorial top 10 at the US Open impressive stuff one of eight first time winners this season and Andrew Novak’s one of them also the team event those two spent the entire off season doing two a day workouts much like getting ready for football season they uh the work paid off for Ben Griffin always something to see here on the range day before the tournament gets started Hideki Matsyama got the season started off in style we’ll check in on Hideki when we come back [Music] we’re so glad to have you with us here on the range at TPC River Highlands the Travelers Championship big range here by the way also one of the really nicest ones out there on tour see some of the notable afternoon pairings been playing in groups of two for the first two days justin Thomas with Hideki Matsyama there’s Xander Schoffley gets Colin Morakawa and JJ Spawn and Scotty Sheffler there’ll be a lot to watch tomorrow afternoon and there’s Hideki Matsyama won the first event of the season at the Sentry 35 underpar that set the tournament record you’re not gonna have to get that deep here but you’re gonna have to get close yeah we’ve got soft conditions this year these players are coming off playing the US Open where the rough was just absolutely brutal they’re going to I believe really enjoy this test of golf it’s going to be a lot different than last week obviously but this golf course has a tendency to hold its own to keep these players below 20 under par for a golf course that’s under 6,900 yards that’s saying something nowadays second shortest golf course on tour only Port Royal is shorter than this one the small greens and the whole locations that they can use on this golf course makes it difficult to make a ton of birdies i mean guys will make plenty um but it’s definitely not a walk in the park [Applause] oh he goes at it hard on almost every swing Richard it’s It’s interesting to watch a guy that puts that much effort and that much power into iron shots it’s interesting and he’s one of those players he’s very deliberate slow back swing almost has like a little pause and he just rips it through and he’s one of those players where it’s I’m I’m never sure if he hit a good shot or a bad shot because you can never tell by his finish there’s Adam Scott in the background meme on Hideki’s golf swing adam Scott doesn’t struggle with his move either but it’s always nice to get a just just soak in one or two of Hideki’s swings that’ll help your tempo all day long [Applause] very old school movement for Hideki he really braces the right side really loads into the right side and fires everything through together [Applause] they’ve thought of everything here they even have a spare golf bag for him back there [Applause] always has an entourage around them as well i believe that was the US Open bag from last week the red white and blue in fact to the black and white yeah that’s right he’ll probably sign that somebody will get a chance to get that bag let’s move on over here to the other side of the range tom Kim getting an earful from Paul Tasori it’s a great tempo there by Tom working on his takeaway connection you saw had the golf ball behind the club so he pushed that one away what are we working on there just trying to push that golf ball back straight a lot of times players will get caught kind of sucking the club head inside their hands and that ball will come to the right if you’re taking it back like that he just wants to take the club back in one piece kind of keeping the triangle between his two shoulders and his hands on the club for the first it’s only about an 8 in drill you get the club going straight back for that first eight inches and it really sets you up to find plane throughout the rest of the swing how am I going to [Applause] [Music] Paul Dori a great player and also a great instructor pretty nice to have that guy on your bag and they collaborate a lot there’s a We hear them a lot out on the golf course see if we can get that golf ball to go right along the line of that aim stick hold that one in slightly well no that’ll be the end of Tom is one of those players that also kind of battles high hands and upright plane which sometimes that leads to kind of what we would call early extension or that’s his way of shallowing it out so I actually have talked to his coach a couple times uh about what they work on and they’re always constantly working on kind of lowering his left arm on the back swing he can kind of stay in posture a little bit better throughout the hitting zone which all relates to face stability great to have better but still not as good as the first one we saw yeah it’s such a great divot pattern you’re disrupting the grass but you’re not getting below the roots into the dirt it’s just a perfect divot pattern you don’t want it [Music] third consecutive appearance at the Travelers Championship for Tom Kim lost in a playoff here to his good friend Scotty Sheffller that was a fun showdown last year so Tom Kim getting himself ready and there’s a New Englander right there everybody in this area big Keegan Bradley fans will check out the captain when we come back on the range [Music] we welcome you back on the range here at the Travelers Championship and we’re so glad to have you with us here for the final signature event of the season the eighth of eight keegan Bradley with all the hometown good vibes here just a couple years ago 2023 keegan on the tee at the 11th oh what a shot putting his uh career resurgence back together here birdie putt at the 12th and Keegan Bradley would make the triumphant walk up the 18th able to tap it in for the win what does it mean to Keegan it meant that much keegan Bradley fired up about it he joins this list of past champions that are here with us this week speed’s win but the hole out bunker shot Harris English in the epic playoff with just which just ended a couple days ago sheffller in the playoff last year and Keegan Bradley Carl has uh he’s reinvented himself he he certainly has you know the big talk of the town now is Keegan going to qualify for his own RDER Cup team i’ll tell you we saw how excited he was and how emotional he was with that win in 2023 all these players have what we call their fifth major and that is their hometown event if you live in Dallas it’s a Dallas event this is Keegan’s hometown event and that win meant a lot to him as as it would for any other player who wins their hometown event richard you’re a guy that kind of kept it even keel out on the golf course that is not how Keegan rolls he is going to let you know how he feels oh he will let you know for sure and that’s what kind of makes him entertaining i love watching Keegan play and the emotion that he plays with and I think that’s one of the reasons why he’s going to be a great Rder Cup captain as well [Applause] the topic continues to churn everybody with a different opinion six players will automatically qualify for Keegan’s team and then he will have to sort through the other six if he automatically makes the team as the captain don’t you have a responsibility to put one of the top six guys you got to play that guy yeah you you you would think so um this may be an unpopular take uh I want Keegan to be the captain of that team uh I think he is going to I think he has already done and I think he is going to do a fantastic job crossing the tees and dotting the eyes and doing everything that he needs to do to put the players in the best position to get points for Team USA i don’t know if it would be a little bit of a distraction if he was playing and if he did qualify for that team I think he would only play a couple of matches anyway do you think he picks himself if he finishes seventh and I I think I don’t think he would i think that he might be forced into doing so if he finished maybe seventh on that points list and the rest of the team said “Coach our captain we have to have you on this team.” That’s the only way I see that yeah how do you leave the guy who’s seventh off the team yeah how do you believe the guy who’s eighth off the team yeah it’s true he’s the one that got that phone call at Rome two years ago very famously shown on the Netflix show fascinating as his summer develops showed you the winner here and Jordan speed in the field here winner in a playoff this is one of the best celebrations of all time and we got the rake going we got the club going we’re sort of chest bumping sort of hip bumping watch the celebration here oh this is incredible the crowd loses their mind i’m not sure that Growler knew that Jordan was going to throw the club or that Jordan knew that Michael was going to throw the rake they both went flying what a way to close things out [Music] that was as entertaining as they come and uh Jordan Spe has always been entertaining Richard that sure has he has the the flare at the right moments and uh Oh there’s our Rder Cup captain again it’s an interesting conversation right there for a guy that’s wanting to play his way onto that team but just quite isn’t there yet when are we going to see Jordan Speed win again that’s another question that I’m sure he’s sick of hearing you get a lot i do [Applause] i’ve learned I would only use my salary not my percentage that was percentage before [Applause] an alltime 2016 speed the former FedEx Cup champion but we’re getting down to crunch time now he’s not inside the top 30 only two playoff events to get into that top 30 besides the the few events we have left this season dialed in with that wedge though collection of spots where that ball’s lining like you know the black when you buy the deck it’s got the one card that shows you what what you hit what you say he’s always been an artist this is not one of those stereotypical golf swings he does it his own way and it’s always worked for us yeah funky grip has a little bit of a chicken wing coming through one of the weakest grips on the PGA Tour pink for 5050 well I’m saying I’m saying like statistically but it’s all about repetition how many you win versus when you post you lose double so that counts as like two more cards missing four total that makes I don’t know what game you’re talking about it sounds interesting you can learn anything out on the range on a Wednesday and that’s why these shows are so fascinating and we are glad that you guys were with us here today on the range uh hopefully you learned a little bit of something here Carl we got a whole different feel this week than last week how do you think these guys are going to adjust i think they’re going to absolutely enjoy this week uh after last week’s grueling effort uh they get a little bit of a reprieve in terms of the golf course it’s soft we’ve had some weather and we have to tip our cap to the all the guys at Travelers that put this tournament on they’ve embraced their spot on the schedule and uh look what this tournament’s become richard what do you think we’re going to see here who who you looking at this week at the Travelers brian I’m going to go with Xander Schoff coming off a T12 at the US Open i think he is kind of trending i know he hasn’t driven the ball well and this golf course if you don’t drive it well you can still get away with it compared to the US Open so I’m that’s my pick all right Xander what do you like who do you like Carl i like Bobby McIntyre this Ooh it’s not a national open but he can win other places uh nobody cares who I think but I’m a chalk guy scotty Sheffller’s pretty good pretty good we’re going to stay with Scotty Sheffller the defending champion all 10 of the top 10 FedEx Cup points are here top 10 in the world are here could it be Tommy Fleetwood’s week we have had a lot of fun here colin Swatton did a great job for us on the ground trying to sort out what Minw Lee was doing we didn’t get answers but that’s what tomorrow’s for don’t miss the opening round coverage of the Travelers Championship as it gets started here on Thursday have a great rest of your Wednesday here on the range

  1. This tournament is a signature event, but the Canadian Open, a national open with a history going back more than 100 years is not? Arnold Palmer won the Canadian Open in 1955, his first professional victory when it was considered the fifth most important tournament in the world. Not all change is progress!!!
