i don’t know you know I saw the post uh and and look I’m not trying to discredit the post or who posted it but if the lie had been as bad as what was posted on social media he would have persisted more uh that that the shot was unplayable i was watching it in real time and you said 14 it may have been 14 i thought it was 15 but um but either way uh I watched him and I saw him taking his stance these referees you don’t get to just you don’t just get to referee the US Open if you are a part-time rules official they are the best of the best rules officials and you don’t get that last tea time unless you’re extraordinary at what you’re doing so these are incredibly competent hardworking people who know the rules with no biases so you know it’s difficult for me to believe that they would have missed something as as pedestrian as casual water so I’m not in the camp that thinks that this was a bad call uh I think the golf course was boron unplayable for everybody in the field uh and if they I maybe they you know I don’t know this at all but I mean if they reached the level of tedium where they were granting drops to everybody for the slightest bit of C I don’t know that they could have finished the round so and and the fact that that look the fact that he didn’t persist demonstrabably tells me that one he’s incredibly mature uh but also that he was willing to accept it and carry on and in that moment I mean you do have to be able to sort of pick the ball you have to allow for that and if you go down and get it and you get more stuff water mud grass between the club face and the golf ball uh you’re not going to be able to control it yep

  1. The amount of water that came up when he hit the ball was a dead giveaway that it was too wet to play that ball as it lay.

  2. I also watched real-time; that was not the only locale where water came up on a ball strike. The rule says you have to be able to see the water, not just have saturated sod. Every shot they showed you did not see 'casual water.' Sam Burns was full class on his post round comments — These guys coming from the youth programs and college are amazingly mature with very few exceptions.

  3. Chamblee is correct. Two USGA rules officials saw it the same way. They know the rules and they have relevant experience. End of story.

  4. If the actual video was taken from the exact spot where Burn’s ball was hit, that was casual water, deserving relief.
All life long, no matter what those two referee judged, period.

  5. I don't understand; were others getting drops on similar situations or not? If NOBODY was getting drops for lies very SIMILAR to this one, it was a fair call, if not, it was crap. To me, it looked like a crap call.

  6. I was surprised by how much water splashed up when Sam Burns hit his shot.
He knew what the conditions were and what was probably gonna happen when he made contact.
You'd think the Rules Official would see it too.

  7. Brandon, you are leading the tournament, 120 yards out and hit a ball 50 yards left as a Pro. So lift and clean, otherwise no one touches the ball in the fairway, as it was obvious it was casual water. He was on the lower side where the water was pushed off. His stance was probably not solid also. I think he should have gotten a drop. Another DJ disaster by the officials, cost Burns the Open.

  8. It was awfully wet when he swung the club. Also, the best officials can be wrong; 100% accuracy is not the goal. Sam showed nothing but class as a player, he hit the shot and lived with the decision

  9. He called for a 2nd ref. That tells you he wasn’t in agreement. So you want him to jump up and down and cry to prove his point? 🙄

  10. Crap .. these guys are so good they can clip a ball clean and we saw what happened on his shot. Yes they work hard on being good enough to be in the last flight, yet they are humans and humans are flawed. As an ex tennis professional I know how warped officials can be. Their moment of power and they used it .. sad but true.

  11. When they came back out from the rain delay, it should’ve been , lift , clean , and replaced for everyone in the fairway. Bad call from the POWERS THAT BE for not making that call.

  12. The pro's have been spoiled with 'lift clean & cheat' when it is not necessary. As a result, they expect lifts more often now.

  13. I played our local course early today after several storms during the night. There were several areas where there was casual water. On the 6th hole I was walking in the fairway and walked through a spot where water was not visible. But when I stepped in this area the water squished out like a squirt gun. When I looked real close there was water barely visible underneath the grass. I suspect this is what Burns encountered.

  14. Why anyone would ever listen to this never been is beyond me. Chamblee's opinion is irrelevant because he's irrelevant. When is the Golf Channel going to get rid of this hack?
